²⁶ See, he is talking freely and they say nothing to him. It cannot be that the rulers know for truth that this is the Christ?

¹⁶ They sent to him their disciples with the Herodians and they said, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and that you are afraid of no one, for you do not regard the social standing of men.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers had thwarted the purpose of God in reference to themselves by not being baptized by him.)

⁴⁸ Can it be that any one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in him?

²² His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed Jesus as the Christ, he should be cast out of the synagogue.

⁴⁷ So the high priests and the Pharisees assembled the Council and said, "What are we doing? for this man is doing many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let him alone in this way, all will believe in him and the Romans will come and destroy our place and nation." ⁴⁹ One of them, Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, said to them, "You do not know anything ⁵⁰ nor do you reason that it is better for you that one man should die for the people and so the whole nation escape destruction." ⁵¹ He did not say this of himself, but being High Priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, ⁵² and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the children of God now scattered far and wide. ⁵³ From that day they plotted to kill him.

⁴² Nevertheless, even of the rulers many did believe in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, in order not to be expelled from the synagogue;

¹³ Observing the fearless outspokenness of Peter and John and perceiving that they were common, uneducated men, they were astonished, and they recognized them as former companions of Jesus.

¹⁹ and in my behalf, that words may be given to me when I open my month to make known with fearlessness the mystery of the good news, ²⁰ for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may tell it fearlessly as I ought.

¹⁴ and the most of the brethren in the Lord, made confident by my chains, are unusually brave in speaking the message fearlessly.

⁷ For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control. ⁸ Do not be ashamed to testify for our Lord or for me his prisoner, but join in suffering hardships for the good news as God gives power.
