¹⁷ You have also taken your fair jewels of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and made to yourself images of men, and did commit whoredom with them,

¹ And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, "Rise up, make us gods, which shall go before us; because, as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." ² And Aaron said to them, "Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them to me." ³ And all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. ⁴ And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with an engraving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: And they said, "These be your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt."

¹⁹ And none considers in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, "I have burned part of it in the fire; yes, also I have baked bread on the coals of it; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: And I shall make the residue of it an abomination? Shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?" ²⁰ He feeds on ashes: A deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, "Is there not a lie in my right hand?"

⁷ On a lofty and high mountain you have set your bed: Even there you went up to offer sacrifice. ⁸ Also behind the doors and the posts you have set up your remembrance: For you have uncovered yourself to those other than me, and have gone up; you have enlarged your bed, and you made a covenant with them; you loved their bed where you saw it.

²⁷ Saying to a stock, 'You are my father'; and to a stone, 'You have brought me forth': For they have turned their back to me, and not their face: But in the time of their trouble they will say, 'Arise, and save us.' ²⁸ But where are your gods that you have made yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble: For according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah.

⁹ And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stone and wooden idols.

¹⁹ They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: Their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: They shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: Because it is the stumbling-block of their iniquity. ²⁰ As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty: But they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things in that place: Therefore have I set it far from them.

¹¹ I decked you also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon your hands, and a chain on your neck.

¹⁴ and that she increased her whoredoms: For when she saw men portrayed on the wall, the images of the Chaldeans portrayed with vermilion, ¹⁵ girded with girdles on their loins, exceeding in dyed attire upon their heads, all of them princes to look to, after the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, the land of their nativity: ¹⁶ And as soon as she saw them with her eyes, she doted on them, and sent messengers to them into Chaldea. ¹⁷ And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them. ¹⁸ So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: Then My mind was alienated from her, like My mind was alienated from her sister. ¹⁹ Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, in which she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. ²⁰ For she doted on their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. ²¹ Thus you called to remembrance the lewdness of your youth, in bruising your teats by the Egyptians for the breasts of your youth.

¹³ And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, in which she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgot Me", says the LORD.

¹ Israel is an empty vine, he brings forth fruit to himself: According to the multitude of his fruit he has increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images.
