¹ The word of the LORD came to me again, saying, ² "Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them; ³ and say to the Ammonites, 'Hear the word of the Lord GOD; Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because you said, 'Aha', against My sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity; ⁴ behold, therefore I will deliver you to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in you, and make their dwellings in you: They shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. ⁵ And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couching place for flocks: And you shall know that I am the LORD." ⁶ For thus says the Lord GOD; "Because you have clapped your hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all your spite against the land of Israel; ⁷ behold, therefore I will stretch out My hand upon you, and will deliver you for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut you off from the people, and I will cause you to perish out of the countries: I will destroy you; and you shall know that I am the LORD." ⁸ Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because Moab and Seir say, 'Behold, the house of Judah is like all the heathen;' ⁹ Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Bethjeshimoth, Baalmeon, and Kiriathaim, ¹⁰ to the men of the east with the Ammonites, and will give them possession, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations. ¹¹ And I will execute judgments on Moab; and they shall know that I am the LORD." ¹² Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because Edom has dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended, and revenged himself on them;" ¹³ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "I will also stretch out My hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and those from Dedan shall fall by the sword. ¹⁴ And I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel: And they shall do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance", said the Lord GOD. ¹⁵ Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred;" ¹⁶ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "Behold, I will stretch out My hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethims, and destroy the remnant of the sea coast. ¹⁷ And I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay My vengeance on them." ' "

³⁸ And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Benammi: The same is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.

²⁵ "Behold, the days come", said the LORD, "that I will punish all those who are circumcised with the uncircumcised; ²⁶ egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all who are in the utmost corners, who dwell in the wilderness: For all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart."

²¹ edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon,

³ and send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the Ammonites, and to the king of Tyrus, and to the king of Zidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah;

¹ Concerning the Ammonites, thus says the LORD; "Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities? ² Therefore, behold, the days come", said the LORD, "that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: Then Israel shall be heir to them who were his heirs", said the LORD. ³ "Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: Cry, you daughters of Rabbah, gird yourselves with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together. ⁴ Why do you glory in the valleys, your flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? She trusted in her treasures, saying, 'Who shall come to me?' ⁵ Behold, I will bring a fear upon you", said the Lord GOD of hosts, "from all those who are around you; and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him; and none shall gather up him who wanders. ⁶ And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon", said the LORD.

² "Son of man, set your face toward the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them,

⁴⁶ "Son of man, set your face toward the south, and drop your word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;

² "Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem, and drop your word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel,

²⁸ And you, son of man, prophesy and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach'; even say, 'The sword, the sword is drawn: It is furbished for the slaughter, to consume because of the glittering: ²⁹ While they see vanity to tell you, while they divine a lie to you, to bring you on the necks of those who are slain, of the wicked, whose day has come, when their iniquity shall have an end. ³⁰ Shall I cause it to return into his sheath? I will judge you in the place where you were created, in the land of your nativity. ³¹ And I will pour out My indignation on you, I will blow against you in the fire of My wrath, and deliver you into the hand of brutish men, and skillful to destroy. ³² You shall be for fuel to the fire; your blood shall be in the midst of the land; you shall be no longer remembered: For I the LORD have spoken it.' "

² "Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it,

¹³ Thus says the LORD; "For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have ripped up the pregnant women of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border: ¹⁴ But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour its palaces, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind: ¹⁵ And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together", says the LORD.

⁸ "I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, by which they have reproached My people, and magnified themselves against their border. ⁹ Therefore as I live," says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and salt pits, and a perpetual desolation: The residue of My people shall spoil them, and the remnant of My people shall possess them." ¹⁰ This is what they shall receive for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts. ¹¹ The LORD will be terrible to them: For He will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship Him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.

² Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: Let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt. ³ Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, "Aha, aha."

⁵ Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker: And he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

¹⁷ Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles: ¹⁸ Lest the LORD see it, and it displease Him, and He turns away His wrath from him.

²¹ The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: My virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; you have slain them in the day of Your anger; You have killed, and not pitied. ²² You have called as in a solemn feast day my terrors to every side, so that in the day of the LORD's anger none escaped nor remained: My enemy has consumed those whom I have swaddled and brought up.

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, who dwell in the land of Uz; the cup shall also pass through to you: You shall be drunken, and shall make yourself naked.

⁶ For thus says the Lord GOD; "Because you have clapped your hands, and stamped with the feet, and rejoiced in heart with all your spite against the land of Israel;

⁸ Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because Moab and Seir say, 'Behold, the house of Judah is like all the heathen;'

² "Son of man, because Tyrus has said against Jerusalem, 'Aha, she who was the gates of the people is broken: She has turned to me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste:' ³ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; 'Behold, I am against you, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea causes his waves to come up. ⁴ And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock. ⁵ It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea: For I have spoken it', said the Lord GOD: 'and it shall become a spoil to the nations. ⁶ And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the LORD.' ⁷ For thus says the Lord GOD; 'Behold, I will bring on Tyrus Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and companies, and many people. ⁸ He shall slay your daughters in the field with the sword: And he shall make a fort against you, and cast a mount against you, and lift up the buckler shield against you. ⁹ And he shall set engines of war against your walls, and with his axes he shall break down your towers. ¹⁰ By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover you: Your walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wheels, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into your gates, as men enter into a city in which is made a breach. ¹¹ With the hoofs of his horses he shall tread down all your streets: He shall slay your people by the sword, and your strong garrisons shall go down to the ground. ¹² And they shall make a spoil of your riches, and make a prey of your merchandise: And they shall break down your walls, and destroy your pleasant houses: And they shall lay your stones and your timber and your dust in the midst of the water. ¹³ And I will cause the noise of your songs to cease; and the sound of your harps shall no longer be heard. ¹⁴ And I will make you like the top of a rock: You shall be a place to spread nets on; you shall be built no more: For I the LORD have spoken it', said the Lord GOD. ¹⁵ Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyrus; 'Shall not the isles shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded cry, when the slaughter is made in the midst of you? ¹⁶ Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their broidered garments: They shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble at every moment, and be astonished at you. ¹⁷ And they shall take up a lamentation for you, and say to you, "How you are destroyed, who were inhabited by seafaring men, the renowned city which was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, who caused their terror to be upon all who haunt it! ¹⁸ Now shall the isles tremble in the day of your fall; yes, the isles that are in the sea shall be troubled at your departure." ' ¹⁹ For thus says the Lord GOD; 'When I shall make you a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon you, and great waters shall cover you; ²⁰ when I shall bring you down with those who descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set you in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with those who go down to the pit, that you be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living; ²¹ I will make you a terror, and you shall be no more: Though you are sought for, yet you shall never be found again', said the Lord GOD."

¹⁰ Because you have said, 'These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess it'; although the LORD was there: ¹¹ Therefore, as I live", said the Lord GOD, "I will even do according to your anger, and according to your envy which you have used against them out of your hatred; and I will make Myself known among them, when I have judged you. ¹² And you shall know that I am the LORD, and that I have heard all your blasphemies which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, 'They are laid desolate, they are given to us to consume.' ¹³ Thus with your mouth you have boasted against Me, and have multiplied your words against Me: I have heard them." ¹⁴ Thus says the Lord GOD; "When the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. ¹⁵ As you rejoiced at the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will do to you: You shall be desolate, O Mount Seir, and all Idumea, even all of it: And they shall know that I am the LORD." ' "

² Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because the enemy has said against you, 'Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession': " '

⁸ Rejoice not against me, O my enemy: When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light to me.

¹ Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

¹⁶ I also will do this to you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

⁷ And he took up his parable, and said, "Balak the king of Moab has brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, "Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.

³³ The fruit of your land, and all your labors, shall a nation which you know not eat up; and you shall be only oppressed and crushed always:

⁵¹ And he shall eat the fruit of your domestic beasts, and the fruit of your land, until you be destroyed: Which also shall not leave you either grain, wine, or oil, or the increase of your cows, or flocks of your sheep, until he have destroyed you.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; ⁴ and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey. ⁵ For they came up with their domestic beasts and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: And they entered into the land to destroy it. ⁶ And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD.

³³ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

¹² And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.

¹⁰ Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: For there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

²⁶ And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

³⁰ And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.

⁷ Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: Your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

⁸ But the liberal devises liberal things; and by liberal things he shall stand. ⁹ Rise up, you women that are at ease; hear my voice, you careless daughters; give ear to my speech.

² Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to His foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? He gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow.

²² They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: For as the days of a tree are the days of My people, and My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

¹⁸ That men may know that You, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, are the Most High over all the earth.

²⁰ Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD, even You only."

⁴ They have said, "Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may not be in remembrance any more." ⁵ For they have consulted together with one consent: They are confederated against You: ⁶ The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; ⁷ gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; ⁸ assyria has also joined with them: They have helped the children of Lot. ⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria; ¹¹ shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, do so to Jerusalem and her idols?

¹ The burden of Moab. ¹⁰ For the hand of the LORD shall rest on this mountain, and Moab shall be trodden down under Him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill.

¹ Come near to hear, you nations; and listen, you people: Let the earth hear, and all that is in it; the world, and all things that come forth of it. ² For the indignation of the LORD is on all nations, and His fury on all their armies: He has utterly destroyed them, He has delivered them to the slaughter. ³ Their slain shall also be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcasses, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. ⁴ And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and heaven shall be rolled together as a scroll: And all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falls off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. ⁵ For My sword shall be bathed in heaven: Behold, it shall come down on Edom, and on the people of My curse, for judgment. ⁶ The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. ⁷ And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bulls with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. ⁸ For it is the day of the LORD's vengeance, and the year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion. ⁹ And the streams of it shall be turned into pitch, and the dust of it into brimstone, and the land of it shall become burning pitch. ¹⁰ It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke of it shall go up forever: From generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it forever and ever. ¹¹ But the pelican and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: And He shall stretch out on it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness. ¹² They shall call the nobles of it to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing. ¹³ And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses of it: And it shall be a habitation of dragons, and a court for owls. ¹⁴ The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. ¹⁵ There the great owl shall make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: There the vultures shall also be gathered, every one with her mate. ¹⁶ Seek out of the book of the LORD, and read: Not one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: For My mouth has commanded it, and His spirit has gathered them. ¹⁷ And He has cast the lot for them, and His hand has divided it to them by line: They shall possess it forever, from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

¹⁸ Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, 'The LORD will deliver us.' Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? ¹⁹ Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? ²⁰ Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?"

¹ Who is this who comes from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? This one who is glorious in His apparel, traveling in the greatness of His strength? "I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save." ² Why are you red in your apparel, and your garments like him who treads in the winefat? ³ "I have trodden the winepress alone; and from the people there was no one with me: For I will tread them in My anger, and trample them in My fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled on My garments, and I will stain all My clothing. ⁴ For the day of vengeance is in my heart, and the year of My redeemed has come. ⁵ And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was no one to uphold: Therefore My own arm brought salvation to Me; and My fury, it upheld Me. ⁶ And I will tread down the people in My anger, and make them drunk in My fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

¹ Against Moab thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; "Woe to Nebo! For it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed. ² There shall be no more praise of Moab: In Heshbon they have devised evil against it; 'Come, and let us cut it off from being a nation.' Also you shall be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue you. ³ A voice of crying shall be from Horonaim, 'Spoiling and great destruction.' ⁴ Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard. ⁵ For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction. ⁶ Flee, save your lives, and be like the juniper in the wilderness. ⁷ For because you have trusted in your works and in your treasures, you shall also be taken: And Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together. ⁸ And the spoiler shall come on every city, and no city shall escape: The valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD has spoken. ⁹ Give wings to Moab, that it may flee and get away: For its cities shall be desolate, without any to dwell in them. ¹⁰ Cursed be he who does the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he who keeps back his sword from blood. ¹¹ Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: Therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed. ¹² Therefore, behold, the days come", said the LORD, "that I will send to him wanderers, who shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles. ¹³ And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence. ¹⁴ How can you say, 'We are mighty and strong men for the war'? ¹⁵ Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men have gone down to the slaughter", said the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts. ¹⁶ "The calamity of Moab is coming near, and his affliction hastens fast. ¹⁷ All you who are about him, bemoan him; and all you who know his name, say, 'How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod!' ¹⁸ You daughter who inhabits Dibon, come down from your glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come on you, and he shall destroy your strongholds. ¹⁹ O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him who flees, and her who escapes, and say, 'What is done?' ²⁰ Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: Howl and cry; tell it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled, ²¹ and judgment has come on the plain country; on Holon, and on Jahazah, and on Mephaath, ²² and on Dibon, and on Nebo, and on Bethdiblathaim, ²³ and on Kiriathaim, and on Bethgamul, and on Bethmeon, ²⁴ and on Kerioth, and on Bozrah, and on all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near. ²⁵ The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken", said the LORD. ²⁶ "Make you him drunken: For he magnified himself against the LORD: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he shall also be in derision. ²⁷ For was not Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For since you spoke of him, you skipped for joy. ²⁸ O you who dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove that makes her nest in the sides of the hole's mouth. ²⁹ We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogance, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart. ³⁰ I know his wrath", said the LORD; "but it shall not be so; his lies shall not effect it so. ³¹ Therefore I will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; my heart shall mourn for the men of Kirheres. ³² O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for you with the weeping of Jazer: Your plants have gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: The spoiler is fallen on your summer fruits and on your vintage. ³³ And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab, and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: None shall tread with shouting; their shouting shall not be joyful shouting. ³⁴ From the cry of Heshbon even to Elealeh, and even to Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even to Horonaim, as a heifer of three years old: For the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate. ³⁵ Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab", said the LORD, "him who offers in the high places, and him who burns incense to his gods. ³⁶ Therefore My heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and My heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kirheres: Because the riches that he has gotten have perished. ³⁷ For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped: On all the hands shall be cuttings, and on the loins sackcloth. ³⁸ There shall be lamentation generally on all the housetops of Moab, and in its streets: For I have broken Moab like a vessel in which is no pleasure", said the LORD. ³⁹ "They shall howl, saying, 'How is it broken down! How has Moab turned the back with shame!' So shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all those about him." ⁴⁰ For thus says the LORD; "Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab. ⁴¹ Kerioth is taken, and the strongholds are surprised, and the mighty men's hearts in Moab on that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs. ⁴² And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he has magnified himself against the LORD. ⁴³ Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon you, O inhabitant of Moab", said the LORD. ⁴⁴ "He who flees from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that gets up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: For I will bring upon it, even on Moab, the year of their visitation", said the LORD. ⁴⁵ "They who fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: But a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the middle of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones. ⁴⁶ Woe be to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh perish: For your sons are taken captives, and your daughters captives. ⁴⁷ Yet I will bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days", said the LORD. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

⁷ Concerning Edom, thus says the LORD of hosts; "Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished? ⁸ Flee, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau on him, the time that I will visit him. ⁹ If grape gatherers come to you, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? If thieves by night, they will destroy until they have enough. ¹⁰ But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: His seed is spoiled, and his brothers, and his neighbors, and he is no more. ¹¹ Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let your widows trust in Me." ¹² For thus says the LORD; "Behold, those whose judgment was to not drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and are you he who shall go altogether unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink of it. ¹³ For I have sworn by Myself", said the LORD, "that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes." ¹⁴ I have heard a rumor from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent to the heathen, saying, "Gather together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle. ¹⁵ For lo, I will make you small among the heathen, and despised among men. ¹⁶ Your terribleness has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill: Though you should make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there", said the LORD. ¹⁷ "Also Edom shall be a desolation: Everyone who goes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all her plagues. ¹⁸ As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities", said the LORD, "no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it. ¹⁹ Behold, he shall come up from the swelling of Jordan like a lion against the habitation of the strong: But I will suddenly make him run away from her: And who is a chosen man, whom I may appoint over her? For who is like me? And who will appoint Me the time? And who is that shepherd who will stand before Me? ²⁰ Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD that He has taken against Edom; and His purposes, that He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: Surely He shall make their habitations desolate with them. ²¹ The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, the noise of her cry was heard in the Red sea. ²² Behold, He shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread His wings over Bozrah: And on that day the heart of the mighty men of Edom shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

¹² Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because Edom has dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended, and revenged himself on them;" ¹³ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "I will also stretch out My hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and those from Dedan shall fall by the sword. ¹⁴ And I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel: And they shall do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance", said the Lord GOD.

¹ Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² "Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, ³ and say to it, 'Thus says the Lord GOD; "Behold, O Mount Seir, I am against you, and I will stretch out My hand against you, and I will make you most desolate. ⁴ I will lay your cities waste, and you shall be desolate, and you shall know that I am the LORD. ⁵ Because you have had a perpetual hatred, and have shed the blood of the children of Israel by force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end: ⁶ Therefore, as I live", said the Lord GOD, "I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you: Since you have not hated blood, even blood shall pursue you. ⁷ Thus I will make Mount Seir most desolate, and cut off from it he who passes out and he who returns. ⁸ And I will fill his mountains with his slain men: In your hills, and in your valleys, and in all your rivers, those who are slain with the sword shall fall. ⁹ I will make you perpetual desolations, and your cities shall not return: And you shall know that I am the LORD.

¹ Thus says the LORD; "For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime: ² But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kirioth: And Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet: ³ And I will cut off the judge from its midst, and will slay all their princes with him", says the LORD.

¹¹ And I raised up prophets out of your sons, and Nazarites from your young men. Is it not even thus, O you children of Israel?", says the LORD. ¹² "But you gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, 'Do not prophesy.'

¹ The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumor from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, "Arise, and let us rise up against her in battle." ² Behold, I have made you small among the heathen: You are greatly despised. ³ The pride of your heart has deceived you, you that dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that says in his heart, 'Who shall bring me down to the ground?' ⁴ Though you exalt yourself as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there", says the LORD. ⁵ If thieves came to you, if robbers by night, (how you are cut off!) would they not have stolen until they had enough? If the grape-gatherers came to you, would they not leave some grapes?some grapes; or, some gleanings ⁶ How the things of Esau are searched out! How his hidden things are sought for up and down! ⁷ All the men of your confederacy have brought you even to the border: The men that were at peace with you have deceived you, and prevailed against you; that they eat your bread have laid a wound under you: There is no understanding in him.in him; or, of it ⁸ Shall I not in that day even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?", says the LORD. ⁹ "And your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

³ ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

³⁷ And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, and Baalmeon, (their names being changed), and Shibmah: And gave other names to the cities which they built.

⁴⁹ And they pitched by Jordan, from Bethjesimoth even to Abelshittim in the plains of Moab.

³ and from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and to the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Bethjeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdothpisgah:

¹⁷ heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon,

¹⁹ and Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mount of the valley, ²⁰ and Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth,

⁸ and Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who dwelled in Aroer, even to Nebo and Baalmeon:

¹ Against Moab thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; "Woe to Nebo! For it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.

²³ and on Kiriathaim, and on Bethgamul, and on Bethmeon,

³ They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted against Your hidden ones. ⁴ They have said, "Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may not be in remembrance any more." ⁵ For they have consulted together with one consent: They are confederated against You: ⁶ The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes;

¹⁶ Take a harp, go about the city, you harlot that has been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that you may be remembered.

³² You shall be for fuel to the fire; your blood shall be in the midst of the land; you shall be no longer remembered: For I the LORD have spoken it.' "

⁴ behold, therefore I will deliver you to the men of the east for a possession, and they shall set their palaces in you, and make their dwellings in you: They shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk.

¹⁶ The LORD is known by the judgment which He executes: The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

⁷ to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;

⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; 'Behold, I, even I, am against you, and will execute judgments in the midst of you in the sight of the nations.

¹⁰ Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of you, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in you, and I will scatter the whole remnant of you into all the winds.

¹⁵ So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment to the nations that are around you, when I shall execute judgments in you in anger and in fury and in furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.

⁹ "And I will bring you out of the midst of it, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you.

⁴¹ And they shall burn your houses with fire, and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women: And I will cause you to cease from playing the harlot, and also you shall no longer give hire.

⁵ And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couching place for flocks: And you shall know that I am the LORD."

¹⁷ And I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay My vengeance on them." ' "

¹⁴ And I will make Pathros desolate, and will set fire in Zoan, and will execute judgments in No.

¹⁹ Thus I will execute judgments in Egypt: And they shall know that I am the LORD." ' "

²¹ And I will set My glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see My judgment that I have executed, and My hand that I have laid upon them.

¹⁵ to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed with ungodly living, and of all their fierce speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him."

⁴¹ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him: And Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will slay my brother Jacob. ⁴² And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: And she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, "Behold, your brother Esau, even concerning you, does comfort himself, purposing to kill you.

¹⁷ For again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah, and carried away captives. ¹⁸ The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with its villages, and Timnah with its villages, Gimzo also and its villages: And they dwelled there.

⁷ Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, "Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation of it."

¹¹ Thus says the LORD; "For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and laid aside all pity, and his anger tore in pieces perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever: ¹² But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah."

¹⁰ Shame shall cover you for your violence against your brother Jacob, and you shall be cut off forever. ¹¹ In the day that you stood on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried his forces away captive, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even you were as one of them. ¹² But you should not have looked on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress.spoken proudly: In Hebrew, magnified your mouth ¹³ You should not have entered into the gate of My people in the day of their calamity; yes, you should not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;substance; or, forces ¹⁴ neither should you have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither should you have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress. ¹⁵ For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: As you have done, it shall be done to you: Your recompense shall return upon your own head. ¹⁶ For as you have drunk upon My holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yes, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.swallow down; or, sup up

⁷ And the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repents Me that I have made them."

¹¹ And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

²⁰ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "Behold, My anger and My fury shall be poured out on this place, upon man, and upon beast, and on the trees of the field, and on the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched."

²³ dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners,

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, who dwell in the land of Uz; the cup shall also pass through to you: You shall be drunken, and shall make yourself naked. ²² The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; He will no longer carry you away into captivity:Hhe will visit your iniquity, O daughter of Edom; He will discover your sins.

⁸ And I will set My face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of My people; and you shall know that I am the LORD.

¹³ "Son of man, when the land sins against Me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out My hand upon it, and will break the staff of its breads, and will send famine on it, and will cut off man and beast from it:

¹⁷ Or if I bring a sword on that land, and say, 'Sword, go through the land'; so that I cut off man and beast from it:

¹⁹ Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out My fury on it in blood, to cut off man and beast from it: ²⁰ Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live", said the Lord GOD, "they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall deliver only their own souls by their righteousness." ²¹ For thus says the Lord GOD; "How much more when I send My four sore judgments on Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off man and beast from it?

⁷ behold, therefore I will stretch out My hand upon you, and will deliver you for a spoil to the heathen; and I will cut you off from the people, and I will cause you to perish out of the countries: I will destroy you; and you shall know that I am the LORD."

⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "Behold, I will bring a sword upon you, and cut off man and beast out of you.

¹² But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah."

⁹ "And your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

³ God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of His praise.

³ and I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage desolate for the dragons of the wilderness."desolate: In KJV, waste ⁴ Yet when Edom says, "We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places"; thus says the LORD of hosts, "They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, 'The border of wickedness', and, 'The people against whom the LORD has indignation forever.'

²⁹ Let people serve you, and nations bow down to you: Be lord over your brothers, and let your mother's sons bow down to you: Cursed be everyone that curses you, and blessed be he that blesses you."

³⁵ To me belongs vengeance and recompense; their foot shall slide in due time: For the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. ³⁶ For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance: He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ So that a man shall say, "Truly there is a reward for the righteous: Truly He is a God that judges in the earth."

¹⁴ But they shall fly on the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil those of the east together: They shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

¹¹ Therefore, as I live", said the Lord GOD, "I will even do according to your anger, and according to your envy which you have used against them out of your hatred; and I will make Myself known among them, when I have judged you.

² God is jealous, and the LORD revenges; the LORD revenges, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies. ³ The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: The LORD has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. ⁴ He rebukes the sea, and makes it dry, and dries up all the rivers: Bashan languishes, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languishes.

³⁰ For we know Him that has said, "Vengeance belongs to Me, I will recompense", says the Lord. And again, "The Lord shall judge His people." ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

¹⁶ and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: ¹⁷ For the great day of His wrath has come; and who shall be able to stand?"

¹ And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines. ² And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, "I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: Now therefore get her for me to wife." ³ Then his father and his mother said to him, "Is there not a woman among the daughters of your brothers, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?" And Samson said to his father, "Get her for me; for she pleases me well." ⁴ But his father and his mother did not know that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: For at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel. ⁵ Then Samson went down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: And behold, a young lion roared against him. ⁶ And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore him as he would have tore a kid goat, and he had nothing in his hand: But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. ⁷ And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. ⁸ And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: And behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of the lion. ⁹ And he took some of it in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them some, and they ate: But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion. ¹⁰ So his father went down to the woman: And Samson made a feast there; for so the young men used to do. ¹¹ And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him. ¹² And Samson said to them, "I will now put forth a riddle to you: If you can certainly declare it to me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty changes of clothes: ¹³ But if you cannot declare it to me, then you shall give me thirty sheets and thirty changes of clothes." And they said to him, "Put forth your riddle, that we may hear it." ¹⁴ And he said to them, "Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And after three days they could not expound the riddle. ¹⁵ And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said to Samson's wife, "Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father's house with fire: Have you called us to take what we have? Is it not so?" ¹⁶ And Samson's wife wept before him, and said, "You only hate me, and do not love me: You have put forth a riddle to the children of my people, and have not told it to me." And he said to her, "Behold, I have not told it to my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it to you?"

¹ And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines, and pitched beside Ebenezer: And the Philistines pitched in Aphek. ² And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: And when they joined the battle, Israel was beaten before the Philistines: And they slew about four thousand men of the army in the field. ³ And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD struck us today before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh to us, so that when it comes among us it may save us out of the hand of our enemies." ⁴ So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts from there, which dwells between the cherubims: And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. ⁵ And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. ⁶ And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, "What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" And they understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp.

¹ Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, ² saul chose himself three thousand men of Israel; of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in Mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: As for the rest of the people, he sent every man to his tent. ³ And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear." ⁴ And all Israel heard reported that "Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel was also held in abomination with the Philistines." And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal. ⁵ And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is upon the seashore in multitude: And they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven. ⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble, (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in high places, and in pits. ⁷ And some of the Hebrews went over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. ⁸ And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. ⁹ And Saul said, "Bring here a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings." And he offered the burnt offering. ¹⁰ And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him. ¹¹ And Samuel said, "What have you done?" And Saul said, "Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; ¹² therefore I said, 'The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the LORD': I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering." ¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly: You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you: For the LORD would have now established your kingdom upon Israel forever. ¹⁴ But now your kingdom shall not continue: The LORD has sought Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be captain over His people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you."

¹ Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongs to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim. ² And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. ³ And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: And there was a valley between them. ⁴ And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.6 cubits + 1 span equates to about 11' 9", or 3.57 meters; according to both Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary and Easton's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Appendix VI. ⁵ And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of scaled armor; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.5000 shekels weighs approximately 156 lbs, or 70.8 kg. ⁶ And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a brass armor shield between his shoulders. ⁷ And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: And one bearing a shield went before him.600 shekels weighs approximately 18.7 lbs, or 8.5 kg. ⁸ And he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, "Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for you, and let him come down to me. ⁹ If he is able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: But if I prevail against him, and kill him, then you shall be our servants, and serve us." ¹⁰ And the Philistine said, "I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together." ¹¹ When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid. ¹² Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: And the man went among men as an old man in the days of Saul. ¹³ And the three oldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: And the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. ¹⁴ And David was the youngest: And the three oldest followed Saul. ¹⁵ But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. ¹⁶ And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. ¹⁷ And Jesse said to David his son, "Take now for your brothers an ephah of these parched grain kernels, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers;1 ephah is approximately 4/5'ths of a bushel. ¹⁸ And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and look how your brothers fare, and take their pledge." ¹⁹ Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. ²⁰ And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the army was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle. ²¹ For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army. ²² And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brothers. ²³ And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words: And David heard them. ²⁴ And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were exceedingly afraid. ²⁵ And the men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man that has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel: And it shall be, that the man who kills him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel." ²⁶ And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, "What shall be done to the man that kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" ²⁷ And the people answered him in this manner, saying, "So shall it be done to the man that kills him." ²⁸ And Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, "Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle." ²⁹ And David said, "What have I done now? Is there not a reason?" ³⁰ And he turned from him toward another, and spoke in the same manner: And the people answered him again in the former manner. ³¹ And when the words which David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul: And he sent for him. ³² And David said to Saul, "Let no man's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine." ³³ And Saul said to David, "You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: For you are but a youth, and he is a man of war from his youth." ³⁴ And David said to Saul, "Your servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: ³⁵ And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: And when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. ³⁶ Your servant slew both the lion and the bear: And this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God." ³⁷ Moreover David said, "The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you." ³⁸ And Saul armed David with his armor, and he put a helmet of brass upon his head; he also armed him with a coat of scaled armor. ³⁹ And David girded his sword upon his armor, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said to Saul, "I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them." And David put them off him. ⁴⁰ And he took his staff in his hand, and chose himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a satchel; and his sling was in his hand: And he drew near to the Philistine. ⁴¹ And the Philistine came on and drew near to David; and the man that bore the shield went before him. ⁴² And when the Philistine looked around, and saw David, he disdained him: For he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. ⁴³ And the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. ⁴⁴ And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the field." ⁴⁵ Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. ⁴⁶ This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand; and I will smite you, and take your head from you; and I will give the carcasses of the army of the Philistines this day to the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. ⁴⁷ And all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear: For the battle is the LORD's, and He will give you into our hands." ⁴⁸ And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew near to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. ⁴⁹ And David put his hand in his bag, and took from there a stone, and slung it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. ⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. ⁵¹ Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. ⁵² And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until they came to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the road to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron. ⁵³ And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. ⁵⁴ And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armor in his tent. ⁵⁵ And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, "Abner, whose son is this youth?" And Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I cannot tell." ⁵⁶ And the king said, "Inquire whose son the young man is." ⁵⁷ And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. ⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" And David answered, "I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite."

¹ Then David came to Ahimelech the priest at Nob: And Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said to him, "Why are you alone, and no man with you?" ² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, 'Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you': And I have appointed my servants to such and such a place. ³ Now therefore, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or what there is present." ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, "There is no common bread on hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have at least kept themselves from women." ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him, "Truly women have been kept from us for about three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yes, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel." ⁶ So the priest gave him hallowed bread: For there was no bread there but the show-bread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. ⁷ Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the most chief of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul. ⁸ And David said to Ahimelech, "And is there not here on hand spear or sword? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste." ⁹ And the priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you slew in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: If you will take that, take it: For there is no other except that here." And David said, "There is none like that; give it to me." ¹⁰ And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. ¹¹ And the servants of Achish said to him, "Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing of him to one another in dances, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands'?" ¹² And David laid up these words in his heart, and was exceedingly afraid of Achish the king of Gath. ¹³ And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scraped on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. ¹⁴ Then Achish said to his servants, "Lo, you see the man is mad: Why then have you brought him to me? ¹⁵ Have I need of mad men, that you have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?"

¹ And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: And David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines. ² And he smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David's servants, and brought gifts. ³ David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates. ⁴ And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: And David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for a hundred chariots. ⁵ And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succor Hadadezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. ⁶ Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: And the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went. ⁷ And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. ⁸ And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceedingly much brass. ⁹ When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer, ¹⁰ then Toi sent Joram his son to king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: For Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass: ¹¹ Which also king David did dedicate to the LORD, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued; ¹² of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah. ¹³ And David got him a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men. ¹⁴ And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David's servants. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went. ¹⁵ And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice to all his people. ¹⁶ And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; ¹⁷ and Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe; ¹⁸ and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief rulers.

²¹ and Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of Gath that were born in that land slew, because they came down to take away their domestic beasts.

¹⁸ The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with its villages, and Timnah with its villages, Gimzo also and its villages: And they dwelled there.

⁷ gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;

¹² the Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is outstretched still.

²⁹ Do not rejoice, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote you is broken: For out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent. ³⁰ And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: And I will kill your root with famine, and he shall slay your remnant. ³¹ Howl, O gate; cry, O city; you, whole Palestina, are dissolved: For there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.

²⁰ and all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod,

¹ The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza. ² Thus says the LORD; "Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those who dwell in it: Then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl. ³ At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands; ⁴ because of the day that comes to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper who remains: For the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor. ⁵ Baldness has come on Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: How long will you cut yourself? ⁶ O sword of the LORD, how long will it be before you are quiet? Put yourself into your sheath, rest, and be still. ⁷ How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD has given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the seashore? There He has appointed it."

¹² Thus says the Lord GOD; "Because Edom has dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended, and revenged himself on them;"

⁴ Yes, and what have you to do with Me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the borders of Palestine? Will you render Me a recompense? And if you recompense Me, swiftly and speedily I will return your recompense upon your own head; ⁵ because you have taken My silver and My gold, and have carried My goodly pleasant things into your temples: ⁶ You have also sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the Grecians, that you might remove them far from their border. ⁷ Behold, I will raise them out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your recompense upon your own head: ⁸ And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: For the LORD has spoken it. ⁹ Proclaim this among the Gentiles; "Prepare war", wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: ¹⁰ Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning-hooks into spears: Let the weak say, "I am strong." ¹¹ Assemble yourselves, and come, all you heathen, and gather yourselves together all around: Cause Your mighty ones to come down to that place, O LORD. ¹² Let the heathen be awakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: For there I will sit to judge all the heathen compassed around. ¹³ Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: Come, get down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. ¹⁴ Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. ¹⁵ The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. ¹⁶ The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter His voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: But the LORD will be the hope of His people, and the strength of the children of Israel. ¹⁷ "So shall you know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, My holy mountain: Then Jerusalem shall be holy, and no strangers shall pass through her any more. ¹⁸ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim. ¹⁹ Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land. ²⁰ But Judah shall dwell forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. ²¹ For I will cleanse their blood which I have not cleansed: For the LORD dwells in Zion."

⁶ Thus says the LORD; "For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom: ⁷ But I will send a fire upon the wall of Gaza, which shall devour its palaces: ⁸ And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and from him of Ashkelon that holds the scepter, and I will turn My hand against Ekron: And the remnant of the Philistines shall perish", says the Lord GOD.

⁴ For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: They shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up. ⁵ Woe to the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines, "I will even destroy you, that there shall be no inhabitants left." ⁶ And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks. ⁷ And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed there: In the houses of Ashkelon they shall lie down in the evening: For the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity.

⁵ Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited. ⁶ "And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. ⁷ And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth: But he that remains, even he, shall be for our God, and he shall be as a governor in Judah, and Ekron as a Jebusite. ⁸ And I will encamp around My house because of the army, because of him that passes by, and because of him that returns: And no oppressor shall pass through them any more: For now I have seen with My eyes.

¹⁴ We made an invasion on the south of the Cherethites, and upon the border which belongs to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.

¹⁸ And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

⁷ And the slain shall fall in the midst of you, and you shall know that I am the LORD.

¹¹ And I will execute judgments on Moab; and they shall know that I am the LORD."

¹⁴ And I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel: And they shall do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance", said the Lord GOD.
