³ Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of a high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs.

¹⁵ And the bramble said to the trees, If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: And if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

³³ Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: And the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled. ³⁴ And He shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a Mighty One.

²⁴ By your servants you have reproached the Lord, and have said, "By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars of it, and its choice fir trees: And I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.

³ and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD; "A great eagle with great wings, long winged, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar: ⁴ He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.

²² Thus says the Lord GOD; "I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it on a high and eminent mountain:

⁶ All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches all the wild beasts of the field brought forth their young, and under his shadow all great nations dwelled.

¹⁶ I made the nations shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with those who descend into the pit: And all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the lower parts of the earth.

¹⁰ Thus were the visions of my head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height of it was great.

¹² Its leaves were fair, and its fruit plentiful, and in it was food for all: The wild beasts of the field had shade under it, and the birds of heaven dwelt in its boughs, and all flesh was fed by it.

²⁰ The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the heaven, and the sight of it to all the earth; ²¹ whose leaves were fair, and its fruit plentiful, and in it was food for all; under which the wild beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the birds of the heaven had their habitation: ²² It is you, O king, that are grown and have become strong: For your greatness has grown, and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the end of the earth. ²³ And as the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, 'Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the wild beasts of the field, until seven times pass over him;'

¹ Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and robbery; the prey does not depart; ² the noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the prancing horses, and of the jumping chariots. ³ The horseman lifts up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: And there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcasses; and there is no end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:the bright sword and the glittering spear: In Hebrew, the flame of the sword, and the lightning of the spear ⁴ Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well-favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that sells nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. ⁵ "Behold, I am against you", says the LORD of hosts; "and I will expose your skirts upon your face, and I will show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame. ⁶ And I will cast abominable filth upon you, and make you vile, and will set you as a gazingstock. ⁷ And it shall come to pass, that all those that look upon you shall flee from you, and say, 'Nineveh is laid waste: Who will bemoan her?' From where shall I seek comforters for you?" ⁸ Are you better than populous No, that was situated among the rivers, that had the waters all around it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?populous No: In Hebrew, No Amon ⁹ Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were your helpers. ¹⁰ Yet she was carried away, she went into captivity: Her young children also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets: And they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. ¹¹ You also shall be drunken: You shall be hid, you also shall seek strength because of the enemy. ¹² All your strongholds shall be like fig trees with the first ripe figs: If they are shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater. ¹³ Behold, your people in the midst of you are women: The gates of your land shall be set wide open to your enemies: The fire shall devour your bars. ¹⁴ Draw yourself waters for the siege, fortify your strongholds: Go into clay, and tread the mortar, make strong the brick kiln. ¹⁵ There the fire shall devour you; the sword shall cut you off, it shall eat you up like the cankerworm: Make yourself many as the cankerworm, make yourself many as the locusts. ¹⁶ You have multiplied your merchants above the stars of heaven: The cankerworm spoils, and flees away. ¹⁷ Your crowned are as the locusts, and your captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges on the cold day, but when the sun arises they flee away, and their place where they are is not known. ¹⁸ Your shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: Your nobles shall dwell in the dust: Your people are scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathers them. ¹⁹ There is no healing of your bruise; your wound is grievous: All that hear the report of you shall clap the hands over you: For upon whom has your wickedness not passed continually?

¹³ And He will stretch out His hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.

² Howl, fir tree; for the cedar has fallen; because the mighty are ruined: Howl, O all you oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage has come down.
