¹ And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. ² But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, listened to the words of the LORD, which he spoke by the prophet Jeremiah. ³ And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "Pray now to the LORD our God for us." ⁴ Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: For they had not put him into prison. ⁵ Then Pharaoh's army came forth out of Egypt: And when the Chaldeans who besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem. ⁶ Then the word of the LORD came to the prophet Jeremiah saying, ⁷ "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel; '"Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me; "Behold, Pharaoh's army, which came forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land. ⁸ And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.' ⁹ Thus says the LORD; 'Do not deceive yourselves, saying, "The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: For they shall not depart. ¹⁰ For though you had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet they should rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire. ¹¹ And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army, ¹² then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself there in the midst of the people. ¹³ And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You fall away to the Chaldeans." ¹⁴ Then Jeremiah said, "It is false; I do not fall away to the Chaldeans." But he did not listen to him: So Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. ¹⁵ Therefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: For they had made that the prison. ¹⁶ When Jeremiah entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; ¹⁷ then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: And the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, "Is there any word from the LORD?" And Jeremiah said, "There is": For He said, "You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon." ¹⁸ Moreover Jeremiah said to king Zedekiah, "What have I offended against you, or against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? ¹⁹ Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, "The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?" ²⁰ Therefore hear now, I implore you, O my lord the king: Let my supplication, I implore you, be accepted before you; that you do not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there. ²¹ Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

¹² And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers: And the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign.

¹⁷ And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father's brother king in his stead, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

¹⁵ And the sons of Josiah were, the firstborn Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum. ¹⁶ And the sons of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son.

⁹ Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD. ¹⁰ And when the year was expired, king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.

²⁴ "As I live", said the LORD, "though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet on my right hand, yet would I pluck you off;

²⁸ Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? Is he a vessel in which is no pleasure? Why are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they do not know?

¹ The LORD showed me, and behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of the LORD, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and brought them to Babylon.

³¹ And it came to pass in the thirty-seventh year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-fifth day of the month, that Evilmerodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison.

¹² "Say now to the rebellious house, 'Do you not know what these things mean?' Tell them, 'Behold, the king of Babylon has come to Jerusalem, and has taken its king, and its princes, and led them with him to Babylon; ¹³ and has taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and has taken an oath of him: He has also taken the mighty of the land: ¹⁴ That the kingdom might be lowly, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand. ¹⁵ But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Shall he prosper? Shall he escape who does such things? Or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered? ¹⁶ As I live', said the Lord GOD, 'surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die. ¹⁷ Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company help him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons: ¹⁸ Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and has done all these things, he shall not escape.' " ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "As I live, surely My oath that he has despised, and My covenant that he has broken, I will even recompense it on his own head. ²⁰ And I will spread My net on him, and he shall be taken in My snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass which he has trespassed against Me. ²¹ And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered toward all winds: And you shall know that I the LORD have spoken it."

¹³ And he said, "O my LORD, send, I implore You, by the hand of him whom You will send."

³⁶ So Aaron and his sons did all things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

² Then said David, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

²⁵ And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.

¹⁸ and they buried him; and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet.

⁷ And also by the hand of the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed him.

¹⁹ And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that Jehoiakim had done. ²⁰ For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

¹² And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD. ¹³ And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: But he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning to the LORD God of Israel. ¹⁴ Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

⁶ He that sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off the feet, and drinks damage.

¹² If a ruler hearkens to lies, all his servants are wicked.

²⁵ And you, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, when iniquity shall have an end,'

¹⁰ I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets."

⁸ Therefore he that despises, does not despise man, but God, who has also given to us His Holy Spirit.

⁸ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, "Entreat the LORD, that He may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice to the LORD."

²⁸ And Pharaoh said, "I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away: Entreat for me."

²⁸ Entreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail; and I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer."

¹⁷ Now therefore forgive, I implore you, my sin only this once, and entreat the LORD your God, that He may only take away from me this death."

⁷ Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against you; pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

¹⁹ And all the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we do not die: For we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for us a king."

⁶ And the king answered and said to the man of God, Entreat now the face of the LORD your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God sought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

²⁷ Saying to a stock, 'You are my father'; and to a stone, 'You have brought me forth': For they have turned their back to me, and not their face: But in the time of their trouble they will say, 'Arise, and save us.'

¹ The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent to him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying, ² "I implore you inquire of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon makes war against us; it may be that the LORD will deal with us according to all His wondrous works, that the king may go up from us."

²¹ Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in My name; 'Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

²⁵ 'Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, "Because you have sent letters in your name to all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

¹ Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,

² and said to Jeremiah the prophet, "We beseech you, let our supplication be accepted before you, and pray for us to the LORD your God, even for all this remnant; (for we are but a few left of many, as your eyes do behold us): ³ That the LORD your God may show us the way in which we may walk, and the thing that we may do." ⁴ Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, "I have heard you; behold, I will pray to the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it to you; I will keep nothing back from you."

²⁰ For you dissembled in your hearts, when you sent me to the LORD your God, saying, 'Pray for us to the LORD our God; and according to all that the LORD our God shall say, "so declare to us, and we will do it.'

²⁴ And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:

²⁴ Then Simon answered, and said, "Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken come upon me."

² For then the king of Babylon's army besieged Jerusalem: And Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah's house. ³ For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, "Why do you prophesy, and say, 'Thus says the LORD, "Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;

¹⁵ Therefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: For they had made that the prison.

⁷ And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land: For the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt to the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt.

²¹ And I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, who have gone up from you.

⁷ "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel; '"Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me; "Behold, Pharaoh's army, which came forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

¹¹ And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,

¹⁵ But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Shall he prosper? Shall he escape who does such things? Or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?

¹⁸ But to the king of Judah which sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus all you shall say to him, 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel, "Concerning the words which you have heard;

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹ "Woe to the rebellious children", said the LORD, "that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin: ² Who walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked My advice; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! ³ Therefore the strength of Pharaoh shall be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. ⁴ For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes. ⁵ They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be a help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach." ⁶ The burden of the wild beasts of the south: Into the land of trouble and anguish, from where comes the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches on the shoulders of young donkeys, and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

¹ Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD! ² Yet He is also wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back His words: But will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of those who work iniquity. ³ Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD stretches out His hand, both he that helps shall fall, and he that is helped shall fall down, and they shall all fail together.

³⁶ Why gad you about so much to change your way? You also shall be ashamed of Egypt, as you were ashamed of Assyria.

⁵ Thus says the LORD; "Cursed is the man that trusts in man, and makes flesh the arm of his strength, and whose heart departs from the LORD. ⁶ For he shall be like the shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land that is not inhabited.

² "I implore you inquire of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon makes war against us; it may be that the LORD will deal with us according to all His wondrous works, that the king may go up from us."

³ And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "Pray now to the LORD our God for us."

¹⁷ As for us, our eyes yet failed, for our help is vain: In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.

¹⁷ Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company help him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:

⁶ And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. ⁷ When they took hold of you by your hand, you broke, and rend all their shoulder: And when they leaned upon you, you broke, and made all their loins to be at a stand."

¹⁶ And it shall no longer be the confidence of the house of Israel, who brings their iniquity to remembrance, when they shall look after them: But they shall know that I am the Lord GOD." ' "

²⁹ And the Chaldeans, who fight against this city, shall come and set fire upon this city, and burn it with the houses, on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal, and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger.

²¹ And I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, who have gone up from you. ²² 'Behold, I will command', said the LORD, 'and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.' "

²³ So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans: And you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: And you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.' "

² And in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city was broken up. ³ And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, and sat in the middle gate, even Nergalsharezer, Samgarnebo, Sarsechim, Rabsaris, Nergalsharezer, Rabmag, with all the residue of the princes of the king of Babylon. ⁴ And it came to pass, that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, by the gate between the two walls: And he went out the way of the plain. ⁵ But the Chaldeans' army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment on him. ⁶ Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: Also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. ⁷ Moreover he put out Zedekiah's eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon. ⁸ And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

⁸ For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; 'Do not let your prophets and your diviners, who are in the midst of you, deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.

³ The pride of your heart has deceived you, you that dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that says in his heart, 'Who shall bring me down to the ground?'

⁴ And Jesus answered and said to them, "Take heed that no man deceive you. ⁵ For many shall come in My name, saying, 'I am Christ'; and shall deceive many.

³ For if a man thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

⁷ Do not be deceived; God is not mocked: For whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap.

⁶ Let no man deceive you with vain words: For because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience.

³ Let no man deceive you by any means: For that Day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

²² But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

³⁶ And on them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursues. ³⁷ And they shall fall one on another, as it were before a sword, when none pursues: And you shall have no power to stand before your enemies. ³⁸ And you shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.

⁴ Without Me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is outstretched still.

¹⁵ Everyone that is found shall be thrust through; and everyone that is joined to them shall fall by the sword.

¹⁹ But you are cast out of your grave like an abominable branch, and as the clothing of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcass trodden under feet.

¹⁷ One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five you shall flee: Until you are left as a beacon on the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill.

⁴ 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel; "Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, who besiege you outside the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city. ⁵ And I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath. ⁶ And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: They shall die of a great pestilence. ⁷ And afterward", said the LORD, "I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life: And he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy." '

⁸ And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.'

²⁰ Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD that He has taken against Edom; and His purposes, that He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: Surely He shall make their habitations desolate with them.

⁴⁵ Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that He has taken against Babylon; and His purposes, that He has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: Surely He shall make their habitation desolate with them.

⁴ Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they who are thrust through in her streets.

¹¹ And the LORD shall utter His voice before His army: For His camp is very great: For He is strong that executes His word: For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

⁵ Then Pharaoh's army came forth out of Egypt: And when the Chaldeans who besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

¹⁷ And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs, ¹⁸ anathoth with her suburbs, and Almon with her suburbs; four cities.

³ And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

⁹ And he came thither to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, "What do you here, Elijah?

⁶⁰ And out of the tribe of Benjamin; Geba with her suburbs, and Alemeth with her suburbs, and Anathoth with her suburbs. All their cities throughout their families were thirteen cities.

¹¹ And I said, "Should such a man as I flee? And who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

¹ The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:

⁸ So Hanameel my uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said to me, 'Buy my field, I implore you, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: For the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. ⁹ And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle's son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.

²³ But when they persecute you in this city, flee into another: For truly I say to you, You shall not finish going through the cities of Israel, until the Son of Man comes.

²² Abstain from all appearance of evil.

¹⁸ Then they said, "Come and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words."

¹⁰ For I heard the defaming of many, "Fear on every side." "Report", they said, "and we will report it." All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, "Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him."

⁹ He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: But he who goes out, and falls to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey.

⁶ And now I have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant; and I have also given him the wild beasts of the field to serve him.

¹² I spoke also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, "Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live. ¹³ Why will you die, you and your people, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, as the LORD has spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon?

¹⁴ For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; "I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: And I have given him the wild beasts of the field also." ' "

¹² then he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber: And lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.

⁴ Therefore the princes said to the king, "We beseech you, let this man be put to death: For thus he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: For this man seeks not the welfare of this people, but the hurt."

⁷ Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

¹⁰ Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, "Take from hence thirty men with you, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he dies." ¹¹ So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took there old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. ¹² And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, "Now put these old cast clouts and rotten rags under your armholes under the cords." And Jeremiah did so. ¹³ So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison. ¹⁴ Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: And the king said to Jeremiah, "I will ask you a thing; hide nothing from me." ¹⁵ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, will you not listen to me?" ¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, "As the LORD lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life." ¹⁷ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; 'If you will assuredly go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house:

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel: The land is not able to bear all his words.

¹⁰ All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: And it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate to the place of the first gate, to the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel to the king's winepresses.

² And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ a King."

¹¹ Then they suborned men, which said, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God."

⁵ For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: ⁶ Who also has gone about to profane the temple: Whom we took, and would have judged him according to our law. ⁷ But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, ⁸ commanding his accusers to come to you: By examining them yourself, you may have knowledge of all these things, of which we accuse him." ⁹ And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.

¹³ Neither can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.

⁸ by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report: As deceivers, and yet true;

⁸ Then I sent to him, saying, "There are no such things done as you say, "but you feign them out of your own heart.

¹² Do not deliver me over to the will of my enemies: For false witnesses have risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

¹¹ False witnesses rose up; they laid to my charge things that I did not know about.

¹ To the chief Musician, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, "David has come to the house of Ahimelech." Why do you boast about yourself in mischief, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually. ² The tongue devises mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

⁴ And now, behold, I loose you this day from the chains which were on your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well to you: But if it seems ill to you to come with me into Babylon, forbear: Behold, all the land is before you: Wherever it seems good and convenient for you to go, go there." ⁵ Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, "Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: Or go wherever it seems convenient to you to go." So the captain of the guard gave him food and a reward, and let him go. ⁶ Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelled with him among the people who were left in the land.

¹¹ Blessed are you when men revile you, persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake. ¹² Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: For great is your reward in heaven: For in like manner they persecuted the prophets which were before you.

²² Blessed are you, when men hate you, and when they separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake. ²³ Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: For behold, your reward is great in heaven: For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.

²⁶ Woe to you, when all men speak well of you! For so their fathers did to the false prophets.

¹⁶ Having a good conscience; that when they speak evil of you, as of evil-doers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

¹⁴ If you are reproached for the name of Christ, you are happier; for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you: On their part He is spoken evil of, but on your part He is glorified. ¹⁵ But let none of you suffer as a murderer, as a thief, as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters. ¹⁶ Yet if any man suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this respect.

²⁰ And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: And he was there in the prison.

¹⁰ Then Asa was wroth with the seer, and put him in a prison house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people the same time.

²⁶ and say, "Thus says the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I return in peace.

¹ Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. ² Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD. ³ And it came to pass on the next day, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD has not called your name Pashur, but Magormissabib.

¹⁶ Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets; "This man is not worthy to die: For he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.

²⁰ Therefore hear now, I implore you, O my lord the king: Let my supplication, I implore you, be accepted before you; that you do not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

⁶ Then they took Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: And they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: So Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

²⁶ Then you shall say to them, 'I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.' "

³⁵ But the vinedressers took his servants, and beat one, killed another, and stoned yet another.

³⁴ Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes: And some of them you shall kill and crucify; and some of them you shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

⁶⁷ Then they spat in His face, and buffeted Him; and others smote Him with the palms of their hands, ⁶⁸ saying, "Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is he that smote You?"

¹⁰ And in due season he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they should give him some of the fruit of the vineyard: But the vinedressers beat him, and sent him away empty handed. ¹¹ And again he sent another servant: And they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty handed.

⁶⁴ And when they had blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face, and asked Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is it that smote You?"

²² And when He had spoken this, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest in this manner?"

¹⁸ and laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.

²⁸ saying, "Did we not strictly command you that you should not teach in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood upon us."

⁴⁰ And they agreed with him: And when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

⁴ And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four bands of four soldiers each to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. ⁵ Therefore Peter was kept in prison: But prayer was made without ceasing to God by the church for him. ⁶ And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: And the keepers before the door kept the prison.

²² Then the multitude rose up together against them: And the magistrates tore off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. ²³ And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely: ²⁴ Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and fastened their feet in the stocks.

² And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to smite him on the mouth. ³ Then Paul said to him, "God shall smite you, you whitened wall: For you sit to judge me according to the law, and do you command me to be beaten contrary to the law?"

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. ²⁴ From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ on frequent journeys, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by my own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

³⁶ And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yes, moreover of chains and imprisonment: ³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawn into parts, were tempted, were slain with the sword: They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; ³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy): They wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

¹⁰ Fear none of those things which you shall suffer: Behold, the devil shall throw some of you into prison, that you may be proven; and you shall have tribulation ten days: Be faithful to death, and I will give you a crown of life.

¹⁵ For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: And here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon."

⁵³ They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone on me.

⁵⁵ I called on Your name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon.

¹ At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. ² And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I implore you, and disguise yourself, that you be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get you to Shiloh: Behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people. ³ And take with you ten loaves, and cracknels, and a jar of honey, and go to him: He shall tell you what shall become of the child. ⁴ And Jeroboam's wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. But Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age.

¹⁶ And the king said to him, "How many times shall I adjure you that you tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the LORD?

¹¹ But Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, "Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah. ¹² And Jehoshaphat said, "The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. ¹³ And Elisha said to the king of Israel, What have I to do with you? Get you to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother. And the king of Israel said to him, "No: For the LORD has called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

¹¹ The LORD said, "Truly it shall be well with your remnant; truly I will cause the enemy to entreat you well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

⁷ And afterward", said the LORD, "I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life: And he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy." '

⁸ And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil'; surely thus says the LORD, 'So I will give Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, who remain in this land, and those who dwell in the land of Egypt:

¹⁶ know that thus says the LORD of the king that sits on the throne of David, and of all the people that dwell in this city, and of your brothers who have not gone forth with you into captivity; ¹⁷ thus says the LORD of hosts; 'Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil. ¹⁸ And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations where I have driven them:

³ For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, "Why do you prophesy, and say, 'Thus says the LORD, "Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; ⁴ and Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; ⁵ and he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and he shall be there until I visit him", said the LORD: "though you fight with the Chaldeans, you shall not prosper." ' "

⁵ Then Zedekiah the king said, "Behold, he is in your hand: For the king is not he who can do anything against you."

¹⁴ Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: And the king said to Jeremiah, "I will ask you a thing; hide nothing from me." ¹⁵ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, will you not listen to me?" ¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, "As the LORD lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life."

²⁴ Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die. ²⁵ But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and say to you, 'Declare to us now what you have said to the king, do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also what the king said to you': ²⁶ Then you shall say to them, 'I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.' " ²⁷ Then all the princes came to Jeremiah, and asked him: And he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

⁶ Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: Also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. ⁷ Moreover he put out Zedekiah's eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon.

¹² And the prince who is among them shall bear on his shoulder in the twilight, and shall go forth: They shall dig through the wall to carry out through it: He shall cover his face, that he does not see the ground with his eyes. ¹³ I will also spread My net on him, and he shall be taken in My snare: And I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he shall not see it, though he shall die there.

²⁵ And you, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, when iniquity shall have an end,' ²⁶ Thus says the Lord GOD; "Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: This shall not be the same: Exalt him who is low, and abase him who is high. ²⁷ I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: And it shall be no more, until He come whose right it is; and I will give it Him." '

²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

³⁶ And Jacob was wroth, and strived with Laban: And Jacob answered and said to Laban, "What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued after me?

⁹ And David said to Saul, "Why do you listen to men's words, who say, 'Behold, David seeks your hurt'? ¹⁰ Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the LORD had delivered you into my hand today in the cave: And some invited me to kill you: But my eye spared you; and I said, 'I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed.' ¹¹ Moreover, my father, see, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: For in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and I did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it. ¹² The LORD judge between me and you, and the LORD avenge me of you: But my hand shall not be upon you. ¹³ As the proverb of the ancients says, 'Wickedness proceeds from the wicked': But my hand shall not be upon you. ¹⁴ After whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog, after a flea. ¹⁵ The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and you, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand."

¹⁸ And he said, "Why does my lord pursue after his servant in this manner? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand? ¹⁹ Now therefore, I implore you, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering: But if it is the children of men, cursed be them before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, 'Go, serve other gods.' ²⁰ Now therefore, do not let my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: For the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains." ²¹ Then Saul said, "I have sinned: Return, my son David: For I will do you harm no more, because my soul was precious in your eyes this day: Behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly."

¹³ Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

²⁶ Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

¹⁹ Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD, and sought the LORD, and the LORD relented of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we procure great evil against our souls."

²² My God has sent His angel, and has shut the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me: In as much as innocency was found in me before Him; and also before you, O king, I have done no hurt."

³² Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father; for which of those works do you stone Me?"

¹ Now Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, "Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day."

¹⁶ And in this I exercise myself, to always have a conscience void of offense toward God, and toward men.

⁸ Meanwhile, he answered for himself, "Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended in anything at all."

¹¹ For if I am an offender, or have committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die: But if there is nothing to these things of which they accuse me, no man may deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar."

²⁵ But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself had appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.

³¹ And when they had gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, "This man does nothing worthy of death or of chains."

¹⁶ Have I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

³⁶ For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left. ³⁷ And he shall say, "Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,

¹³ And Elisha said to the king of Israel, What have I to do with you? Get you to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother. And the king of Israel said to him, "No: For the LORD has called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

²⁸ But where are your gods that you have made yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble: For according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah.

¹⁴ They have also healed the hurt of the daughter of my people only slightly, saying, 'Peace, peace'; when there is no peace.

¹³ Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, the prophets say to them, 'You shall not see the sword, neither shall you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.' " ¹⁴ Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets prophesy lies in My name: I did not send them, neither have I commanded them, nor spoke to them: They prophesy to you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their heart." ¹⁵ "Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in My name, and whom I have not sent, yet they say, 'Sword and famine shall not be in this land'; 'By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

¹⁷ Still they say to those who despise Me, 'The LORD has said, "You shall have peace" '; and they say to everyone who walks after the imagination of his own heart, "No evil shall come upon you.' "

¹⁴ Therefore do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, 'You shall not serve the king of Babylon': For they prophesy a lie to you. ¹⁵ For I have not sent them", said the LORD, "yet they prophesy a lie in My name; that I might drive you out, and that you might perish, you, and the prophets that prophesy to you." ¹⁶ Also I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, "Thus says the LORD; 'Do not listen to the words of your prophets who prophesy to you, saying, "Behold, the vessels of the LORD's house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon": For they prophesy a lie to you. ¹⁷ Do not listen to them; serve the king of Babylon, and live: Why should this city be laid waste? ¹⁸ But if they are prophets, and if the word of the LORD is with them, let them now make intercession to the LORD of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, do not go to Babylon.'

¹ And it came to pass the same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, who was of Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying, ² "Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, 'I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. ³ Within two full years I will bring into this place again all the vessels of the LORD's house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place, and carried them to Babylon: ⁴ And I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, that went into Babylon', said the LORD: 'for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.' " ⁵ Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people who stood in the house of the LORD,

¹⁰ Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah's neck, and broke it. ¹¹ And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, "Thus says the LORD; 'Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years.' " And the prophet Jeremiah went his way. ¹² Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, ¹³ "Go and tell Hananiah, saying, 'Thus says the LORD; "You have broken the yokes of wood; but you shall make for them yokes of iron." ¹⁴ For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; "I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: And I have given him the wild beasts of the field also." ' " ¹⁵ Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, "Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD has not sent you; but you make this people trust in a lie. ¹⁶ Therefore thus says the LORD; 'Behold, I will cast you from off the face of the earth: This year you shall die, because you have taught rebellion against the LORD.' " ¹⁷ So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

³¹ "Send to all them of the captivity, saying, 'Thus says the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; "Because that Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I did not send him, and he caused you to trust in a lie":

¹⁴ Your prophets have seen vain and foolish things for you: And they have not discovered your iniquity, to turn away your captivity; but have seen for you false burdens and causes of banishment.

¹⁰ Because, even because they have seduced My people, saying, "Peace; and there was no peace; and one built up a wall, and lo, others daubed it with untempered mortar: ¹¹ Say to those who daub it with untempered mortar, that it shall fall: There shall be an overflowing shower; and you, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall rend it. ¹² See, when the wall has fallen, shall it not be said to you, 'Where is the daubing with which you have daubed it?' " ¹³ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "I will even rend it with a stormy wind in My fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in My anger, and great hailstones in My fury to consume it. ¹⁴ So I will break down the wall that you have daubed with untempered mortar, and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation of it shall be discovered, and it shall fall, and you shall be consumed in its midst: And you shall know that I am the LORD. ¹⁵ Thus I will accomplish My wrath upon the wall, and on those who have daubed it with untempered mortar, and will say to you, 'The wall is no more, neither are they who daubed it'; ¹⁶ to wit, the prophets of Israel who prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace", said the Lord GOD.

¹⁵ But know for certain, that if you put me to death, you shall surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on its inhabitants: For truly the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."

⁷ It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will return everyone from his evil way: For great is the anger and the fury that the LORD has pronounced against this people."

⁶ Then they took Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: And they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: So Jeremiah sunk in the mire. ⁷ Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin; ⁸ ebedmelech went forth out of the king's house, and spoke to the king saying, ⁹ "My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is likely to die for hunger in the place where he is: For there is no more bread in the city."

¹⁶ And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul. ¹⁷ Then Paul called one of the centurions to him, and said, "Bring this young man to the chief captain: For he has a certain thing to tell him." ¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, "Paul the prisoner called me to him, and implored me to bring this young man to you, who has something to say to you." ¹⁹ Then the chief captain took him by the hand, went privately aside with him, and asked him, "What is it that you have to tell me?" ²⁰ And he said, "The Jews have agreed to petition you that you would bring down Paul into the council tomorrow, as though they would inquire something about him more perfectly. ²¹ But do not yield to them: For more than forty men lie in wait for him, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink until they have killed him: And now they are ready, awaiting a promise from you." ²² So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, "See to it you tell no man that you have informed me of these things."

¹⁰ Then Paul said, "I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: To the Jews I have done no wrong, as you very well know. ¹¹ For if I am an offender, or have committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die: But if there is nothing to these things of which they accuse me, no man may deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar."

¹⁸ Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no reason for death in me. ¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar; not that I had anything to accuse my nation of.

⁵² And he shall besiege you in all your gates, until your high and fenced walls come down, in which you trusted, throughout all your land: And he shall besiege you in all your gates throughout all your land, which the LORD your God has given you. ⁵³ And you shall eat the fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters, which the LORD your God has given you, in the siege, and in the narrow place, with which your enemies shall distress you: ⁵⁴ So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave: ⁵⁵ So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: Because he has nothing left him in the siege, and in the narrow place, with which your enemies shall distress you in all your gates. ⁵⁶ The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter, ⁵⁷ and toward her young one that comes out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: For she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and narrow place, with which your enemy shall distress you in your gates.

⁴ And it shall be, that you shall drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there. ⁵ So he went and did according to the word of the LORD: For he went and dwelled by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. ⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

³ And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.

²⁰ In famine he shall redeem you from death: And in war from the power of the sword.

¹⁸ Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those that fear Him, upon them that hope in His mercy; ¹⁹ to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

⁹ O fear the LORD, you His saints: For there is no want to those that fear Him. ¹⁰ The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: But those that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

³ Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shall you dwell in the land, and truly you shall be fed.

¹⁹ They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

⁷ When a man's ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

¹ The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: He turns it wherever He will.

¹⁶ he shall dwell on high: His place of defense shall be the fortress of rocks: Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

² For then the king of Babylon's army besieged Jerusalem: And Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah's house.

⁸ So Hanameel my uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said to me, 'Buy my field, I implore you, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: For the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.

⁹ "My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is likely to die for hunger in the place where he is: For there is no more bread in the city."

¹³ So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

²⁸ So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: And he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

¹⁴ they even sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home: So he dwelled among the people. ¹⁵ Now the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

⁶ And in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the famine was severe in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.

¹¹ My eyes fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured on the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city. ¹² They say to their mothers, "Where is grain and wine?" when they swoon as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers' bosom.

¹⁹ Arise, cry out in the night: In the beginning of the watches pour out your heart like water before the face of the LORD: Lift up your hands toward Him for the life of your young children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street." ²⁰ Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom You have done this. Shall the women eat their offspring, and children a span long? Shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

⁴ The tongue of the sucking child sticks to the roof of his mouth for thirst: The young children ask bread, and no man breaks it to them. ⁵ Those that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: Those that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

⁹ They who are slain with the sword are better than they who are slain with hunger: For these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field. ¹⁰ The hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children: They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

¹⁰ Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine.

³³ But you, seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.

⁵ Therefore Peter was kept in prison: But prayer was made without ceasing to God by the church for him.

²⁷ But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' office: And Felix, willing to do the Jews a favor, left Paul bound.

¹⁶ And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: But Paul was permitted to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

³⁰ Also Paul dwelt two whole years in his own leased house, and received all who came in to him,

¹ I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called,

²⁰ for which I am an ambassador in chains: That I may speak the gospel boldly, as I ought to speak.

⁸ Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner: But be a partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

⁹ For which I suffer trouble, as an evildoer, even to chains; but the Word of God is not bound.
