Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city of three days' journey across. ⁴ And Jonah began to enter into the city one day's journey, and he cried out, and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown." ⁵ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. ⁶ For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he set apart his robe from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, "Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything: Let them not feed, nor drink water: ⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God: Yes, let everyone turn from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. ⁹ Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from His fierce anger, that we do not perish?" ¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that He had said that He would do to them; and He did not do it.

¹ Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

¹⁵ So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Feed My lambs." ¹⁶ He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Feed My sheep." ¹⁷ He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep.

¹⁷ You therefore gird up your loins, and arise, and speak to them all whom I command you: Be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound you before them.

¹⁹ Therefore thus says the LORD, "If you return, then I will bring you back again, and you shall stand before Me: And if you take forth the precious from the vile, you shall be as My mouth: Let them return to you; but you must not return to them. ²⁰ And I will make you a fenced brazen wall to this people: And they shall fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you: For I am with you to save you and to deliver you", said the LORD. ²¹ "And I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you out of the hand of the terrible."

⁷ And you shall speak My words to them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: For they are most rebellious.

³ So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city of three days' journey across.

¹³ And He will stretch out His hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness. ¹⁴ And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the wild beasts of the nations: Both the sea raven and the heron shall lodge in the pillar upper capitals of it; their voices shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds; for He shall uncover the cedar work.sea raven: In KJV, cormorantheron: In KJV, bitternpillar upper capitals: In KJV, upper lintels ¹⁵ This is the rejoicing city that dwelled carelessly, that said in her heart, "I am, and there is none besides me": How she has become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! Everyone that passes by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

⁸ Therefore bring forth fruits suitable for repentance:

¹⁴ Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you are made whole: Sin no more, lest a worse thing come to you."

¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that He had said that He would do to them; and He did not do it.

¹⁸ Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as has not been in Egypt since its foundation even until now. ¹⁹ Therefore send forth now, and gather your domestic beasts, and all that you have in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die." ' " ²⁰ He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his domestic beasts flee into the houses: ²¹ And he that did not regard the word of the LORD left his servants and his domestic beasts in the field.

³ And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

²¹ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

³⁴ And they shall no more teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD': For they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them", said the LORD: "for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."

⁹ And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.

³ And I set my face toward the LORD God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

¹⁴ Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry to the LORD,

¹² "Therefore now also," says the LORD, "turn even to Me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: ¹³ And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn to the LORD your God: For He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and it repents Him concerning the evil. ¹⁴ Who knows if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a food offering and a drink offering to the LORD your God?" ¹⁵ Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: ¹⁶ Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: Let the bridegroom go forth from his chamber, and the bride out of her room. ¹⁷ Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, "Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not give Your heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: Why should they say among the people, 'Where is their God?' "

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and will condemn it: Because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, one greater than Jonah is here.

¹⁰ To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is the great power of God."

²⁵ Therefore, sirs, be of good cheer: For I believe God, that it shall be just as it was told to me.

¹ Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

⁷ By faith Noah, being warned by God of things not yet seen, moved with fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

⁶ For which reason I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁰ Be wise now therefore, O you kings: Be instructed, you judges of the earth. ¹¹ Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. ¹² Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and all you perish from pursuing the way, when His wrath is kindled only a little. Blessed are all those that put their trust in Him.

²⁶ O daughter of my people, gird yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes: Make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation: For the spoiler shall come on us suddenly.

¹⁸ Say to the king and to the queen, "Humble yourselves, sit down: For your principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory."

²⁹ He puts his mouth in the dust; if so there may yet be hope.

³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard against you, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes: ³¹ And they shall make themselves utterly bald for you, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for you with bitterness of heart and bitter wailing.

¹⁰ Do not declare it at Gath, do not weep at all: In the house of Aphrah roll yourself in the dust.

²¹ Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

⁹ Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: ¹⁰ But the rich, in that he is made low: Because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

⁶ But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." ⁷ Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.

¹⁸ How the beasts groan! The herds of domestic beasts are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

²⁰ For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of Him who has subjected the same in hope, ²¹ because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. ²² For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.

¹ A Song of degrees. Out of the depths I have cried out to You, O LORD. ² Lord, hear my voice: Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

¹⁶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. ¹⁸ "Come now, and let us reason together", said the LORD: "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ¹⁹ If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land:

⁶ All of you seek the LORD while He may be found, call on Him while He is near: ⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: And let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: Their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

¹¹ Now therefore go to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, speak to the men of Judah, saying, 'Thus says the LORD; "Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: All of you return now, everyone, from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good." ' "

²¹ But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all My statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. ²² All his transgressions that he has committed, they shall not be mentioned to him: In his righteousness that he has done he shall live. ²³ Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?" said the Lord GOD: "and not that he should return from his ways, and live?" ²⁴ But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All his righteousness that he has done shall not be mentioned: In his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them he shall die.

²⁷ Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. ²⁸ Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, everyone according to his ways", said the Lord GOD. "Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away all your transgressions from you, by which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: For why will you die, O house of Israel? ³² For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies", said the Lord GOD: "therefore turn yourselves, and live."

¹¹ Say to them, 'As I live', said the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: Turn yourself, turn from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel?'

²⁷ Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of your tranquility."

⁶ So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, "What do you intend, O sleeper? Arise, call upon your God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we do not perish."

¹⁴ Therefore they cried out to the LORD, and said, "We beseech you, O LORD, we beseech you, do not let us perish for this man's life, and do not lay upon us innocent blood: For you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you."

¹⁹ Therefore repent, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord shall come;

²⁰ But brought word first to those of Damascus, and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works worthy for repentance.

²² And he said, "While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: For I said, "Who can tell whether GOD will have mercy upon me; that the child may live?

⁴⁵ And He remembered His covenant for them, and repented according to the multitude of His mercies.

¹³ And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn to the LORD your God: For He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and it repents Him concerning the evil. ¹⁴ Who knows if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a food offering and a drink offering to the LORD your God?"

¹⁵ Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: It may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, ¹⁹ and am no longer worthy to be called your son: Make me as one of your hired servants." ' ²⁰ And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was still a long way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

¹⁴ And the LORD repented of the evil which He thought to do to His people.

²⁷ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. ²⁸ And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ²⁹ see you how Ahab humbles himself before me? Because he humbles himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: But in his son's days will I bring the evil on his house.

²⁷ He looks on men, and if any say, "I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; ²⁸ he will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

⁸ if that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself saying; 'You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bull unaccustomed to the yoke: Turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are the LORD My God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.' ²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a pleasant child? For since I spoke against him, I earnestly do remember him still: Therefore My bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy on him", said the LORD.

³ The LORD repented for this: "It shall not be", says the LORD.

² And he prayed to the LORD, and said, "I implore You, O LORD, was this not my concern, when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled beforehand to Tarshish: For I knew that You are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and You repent of the evil.
