²⁷ For who is greater, he that sits at food, or he that serves? Is it not he that sits at food? But I am among you as He that serves.

³⁷ Blessed are those servants, whom when the lord comes shall find watching: Truly I say to you, That he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to eat, and will come forth and serve them.

⁷ But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding domestic beasts, will say to him as soon as he has come in from the field, 'Go and sit down to eat'? ⁸ Rather, will he not say to him, 'Make ready a supper which I may eat, and gird yourself, and serve me, until I have eaten and drunk; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? ⁹ Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not.

⁵ After that He poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. ⁶ Then He came to Simon Peter: And Peter said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?" ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not understand now; but you shall understand in time to come." ⁸ Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." ⁹ Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head." ¹⁰ Jesus said to him, "He that is washed needs only to wash his feet, yet is altogether clean: And you are clean, but not all of you." ¹¹ For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean." ¹² So after He had washed their feet, taken His clothes, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? ¹³ You call Me Master and Lord: And you say well; for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Truly, truly, I say to you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

⁹ For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that through His poverty you might be rich.

⁷ But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: ⁸ And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient to death, even the death of the cross.
