¹ The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: He turns it wherever He will. ² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: But the LORD ponders the hearts. ³ To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. ⁴ A high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. ⁵ The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenty; but of everyone that is hasty only to want. ⁶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro by those that seek death. ⁷ The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment. ⁸ The way of man is froward and strange: But as for the pure, his work is right. ⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house. ¹⁰ The soul of the wicked desires evil: His neighbor finds no favor in his eyes. ¹¹ When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: And when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge. ¹² The righteous man wisely considers the house of the wicked: But God overthrows the wicked for their wickedness. ¹³ Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard. ¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifies anger: And a reward in the bosom appeases strong wrath. ¹⁵ It is joy to the just to do judgment: But destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity. ¹⁶ The man that wanders out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. ¹⁷ He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man: He that loves wine and oil shall not be rich. ¹⁸ The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright. ¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. ²⁰ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it all. ²¹ He that follows after righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor. ²² A wise man scales the city of the mighty, and casts down the strength of its confidence. ²³ Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles. ²⁴ Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who deals in proud wrath. ²⁵ The desire of the slothful kills him; for his hands refuse to labor. ²⁶ He covets greedily all the day long: But the righteous gives and spares not. ²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: How much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind? ²⁸ A false witness shall perish: But the man that hears speaks constantly. ²⁹ A wicked man hardens his face: But as for the upright, he considers his way. ³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. ³¹ The horse is prepared against the day of battle: But safety is of the LORD.

²² and kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: For the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

²⁷ Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, which has put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem: ²⁸ And has extended mercy to me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was on me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.

¹¹ O LORD, I beseech you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who desire to fear your name: And prosper, I implore you, your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.

⁴ Then the king said to me, For what do you make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

¹⁵ You divided the fountain and the flood: You dried up mighty rivers.

⁴ The LORD on high is mightier than the thunders of many waters, yes, mightier than the mighty waves of the sea.

²⁵ He turned their heart to hate His people, to deal subtly with His servants.

⁴⁶ He made them also to be pitied by all those who carried them captives.

³ The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.

⁵ What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? O Jordan, that you were driven back?

¹ The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

⁹ A man's heart devises his way: But the LORD directs his steps.

²⁴ Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

¹⁹ Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

²⁷ Who said to the deep, "Be dry, and I will dry up your rivers":

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: And He does according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: And none can stay His hand, or say to Him, "What are You doing?"

¹⁰ and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

⁴ And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

¹² And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water of it was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

⁷ But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his countenance, nor on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."

² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful.

² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weighs the spirits.

²⁵ There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end are the ways of death.

⁶ Most men will each proclaim his own goodness: But who can find a faithful man?

¹² if you say, "Behold, we did not know it"; does He that ponders the heart not consider it? And He that keeps your soul, does He not know it? And shall He not render to every man according to his works?

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.

¹⁰ I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

¹⁵ And He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: For that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed in this manner with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.'

²⁴ But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, ²⁵ and did not need from man that any should testify: For He knew what was in man.

³ For if a man thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

²² But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am He which searches the inner reins and hearts: And I will give to every one of you according to your works.

²² And Samuel said, "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

⁸ I will not reprove you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: But the prayer of the upright is His delight.

¹¹ "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?" said the LORD: "I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of he-goats. ¹² When you come to appear before Me, who has required this at your hand, to tread My courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination to Me; the new moons and Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away endure; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ My soul hates your new moons and your appointed feasts: They are a trouble to me; I am weary to bear them. ¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: Your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

²¹ Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; "Put your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat flesh. ²² For I did not speak to your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: ²³ But this thing I commanded them, saying, 'Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people: And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well to you.

⁶ For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

⁶ With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? ⁷ Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? ⁸ He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

³³ And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

⁴ The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, I do hate.

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: How much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind?

¹³ There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁷ And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: And the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁶ Moreover the LORD said, "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: For everyone who exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted."

²³ Moreover he that doubts is damned if he eats, because he does not eat by faith: For whatever is not by faith is sin.

⁵ Likewise you younger ones, submit yourselves to the elder. Yes, all of you be subject to one another, and be clothed with humility: For "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

⁴ He that deals with a slack hand becomes poor: But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: But the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

²⁹ He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: But he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly.

²¹ An inheritance may be obtained hastily at the beginning; but the end of it shall not be blessed.

²³ Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and look well to your herds. ²⁴ For riches are not forever: And does the crown endure to every generation? ²⁵ The hay appears, and the tender grass shows itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. ²⁶ The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. ²⁷ And you shall have enough goats' milk for your food, for the food of your household, and for the sustenance of your maidens.

²² He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye, and does not consider that poverty shall come upon him.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more: But rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs.

¹¹ and that you study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; ¹² that you may walk honestly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.

³⁶ But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul: All those that hate me love death."

² Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: But righteousness delivers from death.

¹¹ Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: But he that gathers by labor shall increase.

¹⁴ "It is of no value, it is of no value", says the buyer: But when he has gone his way, then he boasts.

⁸ He that sows iniquity shall reap vanity: And the rod of his anger shall fail.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies: Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

¹¹ As the partridge sits on eggs, and does not hatch them; so he who gets riches not rightly, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool."

³¹ Cast away all your transgressions from you, by which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: For why will you die, O house of Israel?

⁹ But those that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil: Which while coveting after, some have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹¹ Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not to, for the sake of filthy profit.

³ And through covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words: Whose judgment will now not linger for a long time, and their damnation does not slumber.

¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own scalp.

¹⁶ The LORD is known by the judgment which He executes: The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

¹⁸ And they lay in wait for their own blood; they lurk privately for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of its owners.

⁶ Blessings are upon the head of the just: But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

²¹ He that follows after righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor.

²² Do not rob the poor, because he is poor: Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: ²³ For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

²³ Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: Everyone loves gifts, and follows after rewards: They do not judge the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come to them. ²⁴ Therefore said the LORD, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, "Ah, I will rid Myself of My adversaries, and avenge Myself of My enemies:

⁹ Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know; ¹⁰ and come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My name, and say, 'We are delivered to do all these abominations?' ¹¹ Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it", said the LORD.

¹⁵ And I will cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brothers, even the whole seed of Ephraim.

¹⁸ As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

¹³ "Behold, therefore I have smitten My hand at your dishonest gain which you have made, and at your blood which has been in the midst of you. ¹⁴ Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it.

⁹ Hear this, I implore you, all you heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. ¹⁰ They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. ¹¹ The heads of it judge for reward, and its priests teach for hire, and its prophets divine for money: Yet they will lean upon the LORD, and say, "Is not the LORD among us? No evil can come upon us." ¹² Therefore for your sake Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.

³ Then he said to me, "This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth: For everyone that steals shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and everyone that swears shall be cut off as on that side according to it." ⁴ "I will bring it forth", says the LORD of hosts, "and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that swears falsely by My name: And it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with its timber and its stones."

⁶ Let no man deceive you with vain words: For because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience.

⁵ And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ⁶ And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart.

¹² And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? And he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his saints; yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinks iniquity like water?

² The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that understand, and seek God. ³ They have all gone aside, they have all together become filthy: There is none that does good, no, not one.

¹⁵ whose ways are crooked, and those froward in their paths:

²⁶ The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: But the words of the pure are pleasant words.

²⁹ See, this only I have found, that God has made man upright; but they have sought out many schemes."

³ This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event to all: Yes, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

¹⁰ Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: And none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart: For they shall see God.

³³ Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: For the tree is known by his fruit.

⁹ and made no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

³ For you are still carnal: For where there is envying, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal, and walk as men?

² in which you walked in time past according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience: ³ Among whom we all also had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

¹⁵ To the pure all things are pure: But to those that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.

¹⁴ who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify to Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

³ For we ourselves were also sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

⁵ not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit;

²² Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit to unfeigned love of the brethren, see that you love one another fervently with a pure heart: ²³ Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which lives and abides forever.

²⁹ If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who does righteousness is born of Him.

³ And every man that has this hope in Him purifies himself, even as He is pure.

⁴ A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: But she that makes ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

¹⁷ Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred with it.

¹ Better is a dry morsel, and quietness with it, than a house full of sacrifices with strife.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father: And the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.

²⁴ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

¹⁵ A continual dropping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. ¹⁶ Whoever hides her hides the wind, and hides the ointment of his right hand, which discloses itself.

⁸ Ask your young men, and they will show you. Therefore let the young men find favor in your eyes: For we come in a good day: Give, I implore you, whatever comes to your hand to your servants, and to your son David.' " ⁹ And when David's young men came, they spoke to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased. ¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, "Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants now a days, certain men, that break away from their master. ¹¹ Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men, whom I do not know where they are from?

⁴ He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not abhor evil.

² The tongue devises mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.

⁵ A good man shows favor, and lends: He will guide his affairs with discretion.

⁹ He has dispersed, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn shall be exalted with honor.

²⁹ Do not devise evil against your neighbor, seeing he dwells securely by you.

¹² The wicked desires the net of evil men: But the root of the righteous yields fruit.

¹³ Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

⁶ For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make the soul of the hungry empty, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ⁷ Also the instruments of the rude are evil: He devises wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks truth. ⁸ But the liberal devises liberal things; and by liberal things he shall stand.

² Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ who also eat the flesh of My people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron."

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

¹³ For he that has shown no mercy shall have judgment without mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgment.

¹ From what source do wars and fighting come from among you? Do they not come from this, even out of your lusts that war in your members? ² You lust, and have not: You kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: You fight and war, yet you do not have, because you do not ask. ³ You ask, and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may consume it upon your lusts. ⁴ You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. ⁵ Do you think that the scripture says in vain, "The Spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy"?

⁴ Behold, the wages of the laborers who have harvested your fields, which you partially kept back by fraud, cries out: And the cries of those which have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. ⁶ You have condemned and killed the just; and he does not resist you.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

³⁴ And all Israel that were all around them fled at the cry of them: For they said, "Lest the earth swallow us up also.

¹¹ And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: So shall you put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

⁷ But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly they shall be wounded. ⁸ So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: All that see them shall flee away. ⁹ And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of His doing.

⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain to wise counsels:

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁴ The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge: But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.

¹ Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeks and intermeddles with all wisdom.

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

²⁵ Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: And reprove one that has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

⁵ Now Ananias, hearing these words, fell down, and gave up the ghost: Therefore great fear came on all those that heard these things.

¹¹ Therefore great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. ¹² And by the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were performed among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch. ¹³ And none of the rest dared join himself to them: But the people magnified them. ¹⁴ And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.)

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. ⁷ Neither be idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." ⁸ Nor let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell. ⁹ Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents. ¹⁰ Nor murmur, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer. ¹¹ Now all these things happened to them as examples: And they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world has come.

¹ Therefore we ought to give more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. ² For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; ³ how shall we escape, if we neglect such great salvation; which at first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those that heard Him;

²⁸ He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, shall he be thought worthy, who has tread underfoot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has extreme malice toward the Spirit of grace?

¹³ And the same hour there was a strong earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell, and in the earthquake seven thousand men were slain: And the remnant were frightened, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

²⁹ And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelled.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root: But suddenly I cursed his habitation.

¹⁵ He shall lean on his house, but it shall not stand: He shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.

¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: Brimstone shall be scattered on his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. ²⁰ Those that come after him shall be astonished at his day, as those that went before were affrighted. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knows not God.

²⁸ For you say, "Where is the house of the prince? And where are the dwelling places of the wicked? ²⁹ Have you not asked those that go by the way? And do you not know their tokens, ³⁰ that the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? They shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty. ¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: And his widows shall not weep. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare clothing as the clay; ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He builds his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper makes. ¹⁹ The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: He opens his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest steals him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs: And as a storm hurles him out of his place. ²² For God shall cast on him, and not spare: He would fain flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and see, he was not there: Yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.

⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

⁴³ Whoever is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

³ The integrity of the upright shall guide them: But the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. ⁴ Riches do not profit in the day of wrath: But righteousness delivers from death. ⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: But the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

⁶ Righteousness keeps him that is upright in the way: But wickedness overthrows the sinner.

¹¹ The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: But the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.

³² The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: But the righteous has hope in his death.

⁹ Who is wise? He shall understand these things. Who is prudent? He shall know them. For the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: But the transgressors shall stumble and fall in them.

¹¹ "I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: Yet you have not returned to Me", says the LORD.

⁹ Woe to him that covets an evil covetousness to establish his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil! ¹⁰ You have consulted shame to establish your house by cutting off many people, and have sinned against your soul. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it. ¹² Woe to him that builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!

⁵ But with many of them God was not well pleased: For they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁴ For if God did not spare the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; ⁵ and did not spare the old world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; ⁶ and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example to those that afterward would live ungodly; ⁷ and delivered just Lot, who was vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: ⁸ (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds); ⁹ the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust for the day of judgment to be punished:

⁶ By which the world that existed back then, being overflowed with water, perished: ⁷ But the heavens and the earth, which are now kept in store by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

⁷ If there be among you a poor man of one of your brothers within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother: ⁸ But you shall open your hand wide to him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wants. ⁹ Beware that there be not a thought in your wicked heart, saying, "The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and your eye be evil against your poor brother, and you give him nothing; and he cry to the LORD against you, and it be sin to you. ¹⁰ You shall surely give him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him: Because that for this thing the LORD your God shall bless you in all your works, and in all that you put your hand to. ¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land: Therefore I command you, saying, "You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor, and to your needy, in your land.

¹ And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brothers the Jews. ² For there were that said, "We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: Therefore we take up grain for them, that we may eat, and live. ³ Some also there were that said, "We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy grain, because of the dearth. ⁴ There were also that said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that on our lands and vineyards. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children as their children: And, see, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought to bondage already: Neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

¹³ Also I shook my lap, and said, "So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performs not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, "Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save them: Even to the LORD, but He did not answer them.

⁴ Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: They are like the deaf adder that stops her ear;

²⁸ Then they shall call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

²⁷ He that gives to the poor shall not lack: But he that hides his eyes shall have many a curse.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to deal your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you do not hide yourself from your own flesh? ⁸ Then your light shall break forth like the morning, and your health shall spring forth speedily: And your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear-guard. ⁹ Then you shall call, and the LORD shall answer; you shall cry, and He shall say, 'Here I am.' If you take away the yoke from the midst of you, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

¹⁶ But you turned and polluted My name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaids.' ¹⁷ Therefore thus says the LORD; 'You have not listened to Me, in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: Behold, I proclaim a liberty for you', said the LORD, 'to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ "Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying, 'Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassions, every man to his brother: ¹⁰ And do not oppress the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.' ¹¹ But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. ¹² Yes, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts has sent in His Spirit by the former prophets: Therefore a great wrath came from the LORD of hosts. ¹³ Therefore it has come to pass, that as He cried out, and they would not hear; so they cried out, and I would not hear", says the LORD of hosts:

¹⁴ For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

² For with the judgment you judge, you shall be judged: And with what measure you use to measure, it shall be measured to you again.

³⁰ And he would not: But went and cast him into prison, until he should pay the debt. ³¹ So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told all that was done to their lord. ³² Then his lord, after he had called him, said to him, 'O you wicked servant; I forgave you all that debt because you desired me to: ³³ Should you not have also had compassion on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you?' ³⁴ And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors until he should pay all that was due to him. ³⁵ So likewise my heavenly Father shall also do to you, if each one of you do not forgive from your hearts his brother their trespasses."

⁴¹ Then He shall say also to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: ⁴² For I was hungry, and you gave Me no food: I was thirsty, and you gave Me no drink: ⁴³ I was a stranger, and you did not take Me in: Naked, and you did not clothe Me: Sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.' ⁴⁴ Then they also shall answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You?' ⁴⁵ Then He shall answer them, saying, 'Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' ⁴⁶ And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: But the righteous into life eternal."

²⁵ When once the Master of the house is risen up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us'; and He shall answer and say to you, 'I do not know you, nor what place you belong':

⁵⁷ Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

¹³ For he that has shown no mercy shall have judgment without mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgment. ¹⁴ What does it profit, my brethren, though a man says he has faith, and does not have works? Can faith save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister is naked, and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled"; but you do not give them those things which are needful to the body; what does it profit?

²⁰ And moreover say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.' " For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept from me."

¹¹ And their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

³⁵ So David received from her hand that which she had brought him, and said to her, "Go up in peace to your house; see, I have hearkened to your voice, and have accepted your person."

⁸ A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it: Wherever it turns, it prospers.

²³ A wicked man takes a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

¹⁶ A man's gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.

⁶ Many will entreat the favor of the prince: And every man is a friend to him that gives gifts.

³ But when you do charitable deeds, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does: ⁴ That your charitable deeds may be in secret: And your Father which sees in secret shall Himself reward you openly.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came on me: And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: My judgment was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: And the cause which I did not know I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

⁸ I delight to do Your will, O my God: Yes, Your law is within my heart."

¹ Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man that fears the LORD, that delights greatly in His commandments.

¹⁶ I will delight myself in Your statutes: I will not forget Your word.

⁹² Unless Your law had been my delight, I should then have perished in my affliction.

²⁰ And why will you, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

²⁹ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: But destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

¹² The righteous man wisely considers the house of the wicked: But God overthrows the wicked for their wickedness.

¹² I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.

⁵ You meet him who rejoices and works righteousness, those who remember You in Your ways: Behold, You are wroth; for we have sinned: In those is continuance, and we shall be saved.

²³ And then I will profess to them, 'I never knew you: Depart from me, you that work iniquity.'

⁴¹ The Son of Man shall send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those which do iniquity; ⁴² and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

²⁷ But He shall say, 'I tell you, I do not know you, nor what place you belong; depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.' ²⁸ There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

³⁴ Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him that sent Me, and to finish His work.

²² For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man:

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

⁵ As for such as turn aside to their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them away with the workers of iniquity: But peace shall be upon Israel.

¹⁸ For her house inclines to death, and her paths to the dead. ¹⁹ None that go to her return again, neither do they take hold of the paths of life.

²⁶ For she has cast down many wounded: Yes, many strong men have been slain by her. ²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he does not know that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

²⁰ He that walks with wise men shall be wise: But a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

⁶ and those that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor inquired for Him."

¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

¹ And you He has vivified, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

⁴ For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and have tasted the good Word of God, and the powers of the world to come, ⁶ if they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame.

²⁶ For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

³⁸ Now the just shall live by faith: But if any man draws back, My soul shall have no pleasure in him."

²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. ²² But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog returned to his own vomit again"; and, "the hog that was washed to her wallowing in the mire."

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: But they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

¹² These are spots in your feasts of love, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: They are clouds without water, carried about by winds; trees whose fruit withers, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with your wealth; and your labors be in the house of a stranger; ¹¹ and at the end you mourn, when your flesh and your body are consumed,

²⁰ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it all.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: And drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

¹³ And not many days after the younger son gathered everything together, he took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his goods with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a very severe famine in that land; and he began to be in want. ¹⁵ Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. ¹⁶ And he would have gladly filled his belly with the husks that the swine ate: But no one gave to him.

²⁴ Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.

⁶ But she that lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

⁴ traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked comes in his stead.

³ For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior: I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for you. ⁴ Since you were precious in My sight, you have been honorable, and I have loved you: Therefore I will give men for you, and people for your life.

⁴ Surely He has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: Yet we had esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. ⁵ But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.

⁸ "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways", said the LORD. ⁹ "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

¹⁸ For Christ also has suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit:

⁶ And I said, "Oh that I had wings like a dove! For then I would fly away, and be at rest. ⁷ Look, then I would wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.

⁵ Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! ⁶ My soul has long dwelt with him who hates peace.

⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

² Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! For they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

¹⁸ That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: According to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice in it.

⁵ You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

³ Wealth and riches shall be in his house: And his righteousness endures forever.

²² The blessing of the LORD, it makes rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.

⁶ In the house of the righteous is much treasure: But in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

¹⁹ Also every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

¹¹ Wisdom with an inheritance is good: And by it there is profit to those who see the sun.

¹⁹ A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes merry: But money answers all things.

⁸ But ten men were found among them who said to Ishmael, "Do not slay us: For we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey." So he declined, and did not slay them among their brothers.

¹⁹ Do not store up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupts, and where thieves break in and steal: ²⁰ But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupts, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

³ Those who were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: ⁴ But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

⁸ And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; for our lamps have gone out.'

⁴⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: Because out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a very severe famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

¹ Moreover He also said to His disciples, "There was a certain rich man which had a steward; and the same stewart was accused to him that he had wasted his goods.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: ²⁰ Also there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: Moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: The rich man also died, and was buried; ²³ And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

⁹ The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: But He loves him that follows after righteousness.

⁴ By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.

¹ Listen to me, you who follow after righteousness, you that seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.

³ Then we shall know, if we follow on pursuing to know the LORD: His going forth is prepared like the morning; and He shall come to us as the rain, as the latter and former rain to the earth.

⁶ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness: For they shall be filled.

⁷ To those who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life: ⁸ But to those who are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that does evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; ¹⁰ but glory, honor, and peace to every man who works good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

¹⁹ Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things with which one may edify another.

⁵⁸ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, seeing you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

¹² Not as though I had already attained, nor was already perfect: But I follow after, if I may attain that for which I also am apprehended by Christ Jesus.

²¹ Prove all things; hold tight that which is good.

¹¹ But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

²² Flee also youthful lusts: But follow righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

⁷ I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: ⁸ Furthermore, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me in that day: And not to me only, but also to all those that love His appearing.

¹⁴ Follow peace with all people, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁷ That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found to praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem to the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: Which spoke to David, saying, "Except you take away the blind and the lame, you shall not come in here: Thinking, David cannot come in here. ⁷ Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion: The same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Whoever gets up to the gutter, and smites the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Why they said, "The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. ⁹ So David dwelled in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built all around from Millo and inward.

¹⁶ Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, "I implore you, to Joab, Come near here, that I may speak with you. ¹⁷ And when he was come near to her, the woman said, "Are you Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said to him, "Hear the words of your handmaid. And he answered, I do hear. ¹⁸ Then she spoke, saying, "They were wont to speak in old time, saying, "They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: And so they ended the matter. ¹⁹ I am one of those that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: Why will you swallow up the inheritance of the LORD? ²⁰ And Joab answered and said, "Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. ²¹ The matter is not so: But a man of Mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: Deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said to Joab, "Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall. ²² Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

⁵ A wise man is strong; yes, a man of knowledge increases strength.

¹⁹ Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men who are in the city.

¹³ This wisdom also I have seen under the sun, and it seemed great to me: ¹⁴ There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: ¹⁵ Now there was a poor wise man found in it, and he delivered the city by his wisdom; yet no man remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then I said, "Wisdom is better than strength: Nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that rules among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war: But one sinner destroys much good."

¹⁹ In the multitude of words sin is not lacking: But he that refrains his lips is wise.

¹³ The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: But the just shall come out of trouble.

³ He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: But he that opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

²⁷ He that has knowledge spares his words: And a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. ²⁸ Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: And he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue: And those that love it shall eat its fruit.

²⁶ If any man among you seems to be religious, and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

² For in many things we offend everyone. If any man does not offend in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. ³ Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn around their whole body. ⁴ Behold also the ships, which although they are so large, and are driven by fierce winds, yet they are turned about with a very small rudder, to wherever the pilot inclines the ship. ⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: Thus is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. ⁷ For every kind of beast, and birds, serpents, and things in the sea are tamed, and have been tamed by mankind: ⁸ But no man can tame the tongue; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. ⁹ With it we bless God, even the Father; and with it we curse men, who are made in the similitude of God. ¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. ¹¹ Does a fountain send forth fresh water and bitter at the same place? ¹² Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? Either can a vine, figs? So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh. ¹³ Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? Let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

⁵ And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow, nor did he reverence, then Haman was full of wrath. ⁶ And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had showed him the people of Mordecai: Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

¹ Blessed is the man that does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful.ungodly; or, wicked

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁸ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.

²⁹ Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

⁸ Better is the end of a thing than the beginning of it: And the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. ⁹ Do not be hasty to be angry in your spirit: For anger rests in the bosom of fools.

⁶ We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: Even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: But his lies shall not be so.

²⁹ We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogance, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly wroth, and sent forth, and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and inside all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ provides her meat in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long will you sleep, O sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall your poverty come as one that travels abroad, and your want as an armed man.

²⁴ The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: But the slothful shall be under tribute.

²⁷ The slothful man does not roast that which he took in hunting: But the substance of a diligent man is precious.

¹⁹ The way of the slothful man is as a hedge of thorns: But the way of the righteous is made plain.

²⁴ A slothful man hides his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹³ The slothful man says, "There is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets."

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ and, look, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face of it, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall your poverty come as one that travels abroad; and your want as an armed man.

¹³ The slothful man says, "There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets."

¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

²⁶ His lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed:

²⁶ He is ever merciful, and lends; and his seed is blessed.

⁴² Give to him that asks you, and from him that would desire to borrow from you do not turn away.

³⁰ Give to every man that asks of you; and from him that takes away your goods, do not ask for them back again. ³¹ And as you would like that men should do to you, you also do to them likewise. ³² For if you love those who love you, what thanks do you have? For sinners also love those that love them. ³³ And if you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you have? For even sinners do the same also. ³⁴ And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what thanks do you have? For sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much back. ³⁵ But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: For He is kind to the unthankful and to the evil. ³⁶ Therefore be merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

³³ I have coveted no one's silver, or gold, or apparel. ³⁴ Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have served for my necessities, and for those that were with me. ³⁵ I have shown you all things, how by so laboring you ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "

⁷ Therefore, as you abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that you abound in this grace also. ⁸ I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the confidence of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. ⁹ For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that through His poverty you might be rich.

⁹ (As it is written, "He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor: His righteousness remains forever." ¹⁰ Now He that ministers seed to the sower also ministers bread for your food, and multiplies your seed sown, and increases the fruits of your righteousness); ¹¹ being enriched in everything to all bountifulness, which causes thanksgiving to God through us. ¹² For the administration of this service not only supplies the lack of the saints, but also is abundant through many thanksgivings to God; ¹³ While through the proof of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution to them, and to all men; ¹⁴ and by their prayer for you, who long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.

⁵ Seeing we did not use flattering words at any time, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness: ⁶ Nor did we seek glory from men, neither from you, nor from others yet, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. ⁷ But we were gentle among you, even as a nursing mother cherishes her children: ⁸ So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted to you, not just the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because you were dear to us. ⁹ For you remember, brethren, our labor and travail: For laboring night and day, because we would not impose upon any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.

¹² therefore I said, 'The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the LORD': I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering." ¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly: You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you: For the LORD would have now established your kingdom upon Israel forever.

²¹ But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal." ²² And Samuel said, "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. ²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you from being king."

⁸ I will not reprove you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, to have been continually before me. ⁹ I will take no bull out of your house, nor he-goats out of your folds. ¹⁰ For every wild beast of the forest is mine, and the domestic beasts upon a thousand hills. ¹¹ I know all the fowls of the mountains: And the wild beasts of the field are mine. ¹² If I were hungry, I would not tell you: For the world is Mine, and its fullness. ¹³ Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

⁹ He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

¹¹ "To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?" said the LORD: "I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of he-goats. ¹² When you come to appear before Me, who has required this at your hand, to tread My courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination to Me; the new moons and Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away endure; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ My soul hates your new moons and your appointed feasts: They are a trouble to me; I am weary to bear them. ¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: Your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil;

³ He who kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he who sacrifices a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he who offers an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he who burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.

²⁰ For what purpose does incense from Sheba come to Me, and the sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet to Me."

¹¹ Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it", said the LORD. ¹² "But all of you go now to My place which was in Shiloh, where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of My people Israel.

²¹ I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell scents in your solemn assemblies.solemn assemblies; or, holy days ²² Though you offer me burnt offerings and your food offerings, I will not accept them: Neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat domestic beasts.peace offerings; or, thank offerings

¹³ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: For you neither go in yourselves, nor do you permit those who are entering to go in.

¹ You shall not raise a false report: Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.raise; or, receive

¹⁶ If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; ¹⁷ then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; ¹⁸ and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: And behold, if the witness be a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ then you shall do to him, as he had thought to have done to his brother: So shall you put the evil away from among you.

¹⁹ a false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

¹⁹ The lip of truth shall be established forever: But a lying tongue is but for a moment.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

¹⁸ A man that bears false witness against his neighbor is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

¹⁵ And they said to her, "You are mad." But she constantly affirmed that it was in fact so. Then they said, "It is his angel."

¹⁷ When I therefore was thus minded, did I employ lightness? Or the things I purposed, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes yes, and No no? ¹⁸ But as God is true, our word to you was not Yes and No. ¹⁹ For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not "Yes and No", but in Him was "Yes." ²⁰ For all the promises of God are "Yes" in Him, and in Him "Amen", to the glory of God by us.

¹³ We having the same spirit of faith, according to as it is written, "I believed, and therefore I have spoken"; we also believe, and therefore speak;

⁸ This is a faithful saying, and it is my will that you affirm these things constantly, that those who have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.

⁵ O that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes!

⁵⁹ I thought upon my ways, and turned my feet to Your testimonies.

⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: But the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that fears always: But he that hardens his heart shall fall into mischief.

¹ He, that often being reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

² "Lift up your eyes to the high places, and see where you have not been lain with. In the road you have sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your whoredoms and with your wickedness. ³ Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has been no latter rain; and you had a whore's forehead, you refused to be ashamed.

³ O LORD, are not your eyes upon the truth? You have stricken them, but they have not grieved; You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: They have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

¹² Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: Therefore they shall fall among those who fall: In the time of their visitation they shall be cast down", said the LORD.

¹⁶ "As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you. ¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatever thing goes forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: For then we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.

²⁸ Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

⁵ Now therefore thus says the LORD of hosts; "Consider your ways.

⁷ Thus says the LORD of hosts; "Consider your ways.

¹⁵ And now, I implore you, consider from this day onward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

¹⁸ 'Now consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider it. ¹⁹ Is the seed still in the barn? Yes, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not brought forth: From this day forward I will bless you.' "

¹⁷ And when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have enough bread with some to spare, yet I perish with hunger! ¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you,

¹¹ Now may God Himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you.

²¹ There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

⁵ Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against you', saying, ⁶ 'Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach in it for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:'" ⁷ Thus says the Lord GOD, "It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

⁹ Associate yourselves, O you people, and you shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all you of far countries: Gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nothing; speak the word, and it shall not stand: For God is with us."

²⁷ For the LORD of hosts has purposed, and who shall cancel it? And his hand is outstretched, and who shall turn it back?

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure': ¹¹ Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executes My counsel from a far country: Yes, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

²³ Thus says the LORD, "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

¹³ Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: For the sea worked up and down, and was tempestuous against them.

²⁷ "For truly against Your holy Child Jesus, whom You have anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, ²⁸ to do whatever Your hand and Your counsel determined beforehand to be done.

³⁹ But if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it; lest you may even be found to fight against God."

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their own craftiness." ²⁰ And again, "The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain."

⁸ and "A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense", even to those which stumble at the word, being disobedient: For that also they were appointed.

³ But You, O LORD, are a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

⁸ Salvation belongs to the LORD: Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah.

⁷ Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

¹⁷ A horse is a vain thing for safety: Neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. ¹⁸ Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those that fear Him, upon them that hope in His mercy;

²⁰ He that is our God is the God of salvation; and to GOD the Lord belong the issues from death.

¹⁰ It is He that gives salvation to kings: Who delivers David His servant from the hurtful sword.

¹⁰ He delights not in the strength of the horse: He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.

¹¹ I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.

¹ Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

²³ Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: Truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
