²³ And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague those that hate him.

¹ Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: But David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.

¹ And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest all around from all his enemies;

⁹ And I was with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies out of your sight, and have made you a great name, like to the name of the great men that are in the earth.

⁴⁰ For you have girded me with strength to battle: Them that rose up against me have you subdued under me. ⁴¹ You have also given me the necks of my enemies, that I might destroy those that hate me. ⁴² They looked, but there was none to save; even to the LORD, but He did not answer them. ⁴³ Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad. ⁴⁴ You also have delivered me from the strivings of my people, you have kept me to be head of the heathen: A people which I did not know shall serve me.

¹ Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? ² The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His anointed, saying, ³ "Let us break their bands apart, and cast away their cords from us." ⁴ He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: The LORD shall have them in derision. ⁵ Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure. ⁶ "Yet I have set My king upon My holy hill of Zion."

⁴⁰ You have also given me the necks of my enemies; that I might destroy those that hate me.

⁸ Your hand shall find out all Your enemies: Your right hand shall find out those that hate You. ⁹ You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger: The LORD shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

³ They compassed me all around with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.

¹⁸ I will clothe his enemies with shame: But his crown shall flourish upon himself."

¹⁴ But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, 'We will not have this man to reign over us.'

²⁷ But bring here those enemies of mine, who were not willing that I reign over them, and slay them before me.' "
