¹² Blessed is the man whom You chasten, O LORD, and teach him out of Your law;

⁵ You shall also consider in your heart, that, as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens you.

¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects: Therefore do not despise the chastening of the Almighty:

¹⁶ then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, ¹⁷ that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. ¹⁸ He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. ¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain on his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain: ²⁰ So that his life abhors bread, and his soul dainty meat. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. ²² Yes, his soul draws near to the grave, and his life to the destroyers. ²³ If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man his uprightness: ²⁴ Then he is gracious to him, and said, "Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. ²⁵ His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: He shall return to the days of his youth:

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted I went astray: But now I have kept Your word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn Your statutes.

¹¹ My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of His correction: ¹² For whom the LORD loves He corrects; even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

⁹ The LORD's voice cries to the city, and the man of wisdom shall see Your name: "Hear the rod all you, and Who has appointed it.

³² But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to children, "My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are rebuked by Him: ⁶ For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives." ⁷ If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father does not chasten? ⁸ But if you are without chastisement, of which all are partakers, then you are bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: Should we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed chastened us for a few days according to their own pleasure; but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. ¹¹ Now no chastening seems to be joyous in the present, but grievous: Nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those which are exercised by it.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: Therefore be zealous, and repent.
