⁹ And the Lord's portion was his people Jacob; Israel was his lot of inheritance.

¹² Happy is the nation, whose God is the Lord; the people, whom he hath chosen for his heritage.

² Remember thy congregation which thou hast purchased of old; this portion of thine inheritance which thou hast redeemed; this mount Sion on which thou hast dwelt.

⁴ You have not strengthened the weak, nor cured the diseased. That which was bruised you have not bound up, nor brought back that which was going astray; nor have you searched for that which was lost: but you have wearied out the strong with toil,

¹⁴ [p] Feed thou thy people with thy crook; the flock of thy heritage; them who are by themselves in a forest in the midst of yonder Carmel. [J] They shall feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.

²⁵ Whereupon Jesus having called them to him, said, You know that the chiefs of the nations exercise dominion over them; and they who are grandees exercise authority over them: ²⁶ but it shall not be so among you. But whoever among you would wish to be great, let him be your attendant.

⁸ But as for you, be ye not called Rabbi; for one is your teacher, namely the Christ. Now as for you all, ye are brethren, ⁹ and should call no one on earth your father, for one is your father, namely, he who is in heaven. ¹⁰ Neither be ye called leaders for one is your leader, namely the Christ.

⁴² but Jesus, having called them to him, said to them, You know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them; and their grandees exercise authority over them; ⁴³ but it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you, let him be your attendant: ⁴⁴ and whoever of you would be first, let him be the servant of all. ⁴⁵ For the son of man did not come to be waited on, but to serve; and to give his life as a ransom for many,

²⁴ Now there had been a contest among them in respect to this, which of them should be the greatest. ²⁵ Therefore he said to them, The kings of the nations exercise dominion over them. And they who tyrannise over them are stiled benefactors. ²⁶ But with you it must not be so. But let the elder among you be as the younger; and the leader as he who waiteth at table. ²⁷ For which is greater; he who is at table; or he who waiteth? Is not he, who is at table? But I am among you as he who waiteth.

²⁸ Take heed therefore to yourselves and to the whole flock among which the holy spirit hath made you overseers to tend the congregation of God which he hath purchased with his own blood.

⁵ Who then is Paul? And who is Apollos? Are they any thing but mere dispensers of another's bounty, by whose means you have believed? Even as the Lord hath given to each,

⁹ For we are fellow labourers belonging to God; you are God's field; you are his building.

¹¹ Nevertheless, man is not without woman, nor woman without man in the Lord.

²⁴ not that we have dominion over your faith; but are joint promoters of your joy; for in this faith you have continued;

⁵ For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus sake.

¹⁷ be ye, brethren, imitators of me, and keep your eyes fixed on those who walk thus, as you have us for an example.

⁹ and practise what you have learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me; and the God of peace be with you.

⁵ that our glad tidings did not come to you in word only, but with power, and with a holy spirit, and with much assurance. As you knew what manner of persons we were among you ⁶ for your sakes, you indeed became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having embraced the word in much affliction, with the joy of a holy spirit;

⁹ not because we are destitute of authority, but that we might exhibit ourselves as a pattern for you to imitate.

¹² Let none despise thy youth; but be thou a pattern to the faithful in doctrine, in behaviour, in love, in spirit, in fidelity, in purity.

⁷ shewing thyself in all things a pattern of good works; in thy doctrine displaying integrity, gravity, incorruptness,

⁹ but you being a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people peculiarly set apart that you may publish the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light

⁹ I wrote to the congregation, but Diotrephes, who affecteth a preeminence among them, doth not regard us. ¹⁰ For this cause, when I come I will take notice of his works which he doth, talking lightly of us with malicious words, and not content with this, he doth not entertain the brethren himself, and them who would, he hindereth, and casteth them out of the congregation.
