²⁹ Who is weak and I not weak? Who is offended and I not inflamed?

⁶ And behold there came a man of the children of Israel, who conducted his brother to a Madianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and before all the congregation of the sons of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony. ⁷ Upon seeing this, Phineas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, started up from among the congregation, and taking a javelin in his hand, ⁸ went after the man; the Israelite, into the bed chamber, and ran them both through, the man, the Israelite, quite through, and the woman into her belly. Whereupon the plague stopped from the children of Israel. ⁹ Now they who had died of the plague were twenty four thousand. ¹⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses saying, ¹¹ Phineas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath stayed my wrath from Israel, by shewing a zeal for me among them, so that in my jealousy I have not utterly consumed the children of Israel.

¹ When these things were done, the chiefs came to me and said, The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the. neighbouring tribes. In their abominations, the Ethites, the Pherezites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, and the Moserites, and the Amorites, are the same with the Chananites. ² For they have taken some of their daughters for themselves, and their sons; and the holy seed is mingled with the tribes of the neighbouring regions. And the hand of the chiefs is principally concerned in this transgression. ³ And when I heard this I rent my garments, and started up and tore the hair of my head and my beard. Then I sat down mourning.

⁶ Upon hearing their cry and these speeches, I was exceedingly grieved. ⁷ And having consulted in my own mind, I chid the nobles and the chiefs, and said to them, would any man exact of his brother what you exact? Then having assembled a great meeting against them, ⁸ I said to them, We with our free will offerings have purchased' our brethren the Jews who were sold to the nations; and are you going to sell your brethren that they may be sold to us? And when they held their peace and found no answer, ⁹ I said, This thing which you do is not good. It is not in this manner that you are in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of the nations, our enemies. ¹⁰ My brethren and my acquaintances, and I myself, have lent them money and provisions. Let us I pray you relinquish our demands for this. ¹¹ Restore to them, I beseech you, this very day their fields, and their vineyards, and their olive yards, and their houses; and abate the price at which you have sold to each other corn and wine and oil. ¹² Thereupon they said, We will restore, and require nothing of them. We will do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests and having caused them to swear that they would do according to this decree, ¹³ I shook my lap and said, So may God shake every man who will not perform this promise, out of his house and from his labour, and let them be shaken out and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen; and praised the Lord, and the people executed the decree.

¹⁵ In those days I saw in Juda some treading wine presses on the sabbath day, and some carrying sheaves, and loading their asses with wine and grapes and figs, and all kinds of burdens, and bringing them to Jerusalem on the sabbath day. Whereupon I testified against them, touching the day of their selling. ¹⁶ Some also dwelt there who brought fish, and sold all sorts of wares on the sabbath, to the children of Juda, even in Jerusalem. ¹⁷ Upon this I chided the freemen of Juda, and said to them, What evil is this which you do in profaning the sabbath? ¹⁸ Did not your fathers do so, and did not our God bring upon them and upon us, and upon this city, all these evils? And are you bringing more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath? ¹⁹ And when the gates of Jerusalem were set up, I ordered them to be shut before the sabbath, and gave a charge that they should not be opened till after the sabbath; and I stationed some of my servants at the gates that no burdens might be brought in on the sabbath day. ²⁰ Upon this they all lodged and carried on their traffick without Jerusalem once or twice.

²³ In those days also I saw the Jews who had married wives of Azotus, of Ammon, and of Moab, ²⁴ and their children spoke half in the dialect of Azotus, and did not know how to speak the Jewish language; ²⁵ and I .quarrelled with them, and reproached them, and smote some men among them, and caused some of them to be shaved, and adjured them by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take any of their daughters for your sons.

¹⁷ Then did his disciples remember that it was written, "My zeal for thy house hath consumed me."

¹⁵ Set your hearts on this with respect to each other"to rejoice with them who rejoice, and to weep with them who weep.

¹ We then who are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

¹ It is currently reported that there is among you an act of lewdness, and of such a sort as is not named among the nations, so that one hath his father's wife: ² And you are puffed up! Why did you not rather mourn, in order that he who hath done such a deed might be removed from among you? ³ For I indeed, absent as I am in the body, but present in the spirit, have already determined as if I were present, with regard to him who hath done this, ⁴ in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you and my spirit are assembled with the power of the Lord Jesus Christ, ⁵ to deliver such a one over to satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

⁵ To your shame I say, is it so that there is not among you a wise man; not so much as one who can determine a cause between brethren; ⁶ but brother goeth to law with brother and that before unbelievers? ⁷ Now, then, it is indeed a disparagement to you that you have law suits among yourselves. Why do you not rather suffer wrong? Why do you not rather suffer loss?

¹⁵ Do you not know that your bodies are members 'of Christ? Shall I then take the members of the Christ, and make them members of a harlot? Surely no. ¹⁶ Do you not know that he who is joined to the harlot is one body with her? For the scripture saith, "They two shall be one flesh." ¹⁷ Now he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. ¹⁸ Flee fornication. Every other sin, which a man committeth, is without the body; but he who committeth whoredom sinneth against his own body.

¹³ Wherefore if meat cause my brother to stumble, I will never eat flesh that I may not cause my brother to stumble.

²² To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak; to all those I have become all this that I may save all.

²² What? have you not houses for eating and drinking? Or do you despise the congregation of God, and expose to shame them who have not? What must I say to you? Shall I commend you for this? I do not commend you.

²⁶ so that if one member suffereth, all the rest suffer with it; and if one member is honoured, all the rest rejoice with it.

¹² Now, if Christ be proclaimed, that he hath been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? ¹³ If there is indeed no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not raised. ¹⁴ And if Christ hath not been raised, our proclamation is vain, and your belief is also vain. ¹⁵ And we are found to be actually false witnesses of God; because we have testified concerning God, that he hath raised the Christ, whom he hath not raised, if indeed the dead are not raised. ¹⁶ For if the dead are not raised, then Christ was not raised. ¹⁷ And if Christ hath not been raised, your belief is vain; you are still in your sins; ¹⁸ and consequently they, who have been composed to rest in Christ, have perished. ¹⁹ If we have hope in Christ in this life only, we, of all men, are most to be pitied. ²⁰ But now Christ hath been raised from the dead. He was the first fruits of them who have been composed to rest. ²¹ For since by man came death, by man also cometh a resurrection of the dead. ²² For as by Adam all die, so by the Christ all shall be brought to life: ²³ but every one in his proper order; Christ the first fruits; then they who belong to Christ, at his coming: ²⁴ then the end, when he shall deliver up the kingdom to God the father, when he shall have put a stop to all empire and all authority, and all power. ²⁵ For he must reign until he hath put all the enemies under his feet. ²⁶ The last enemy, death, is to be destroyed: ²⁷ for he hath put all under his feet. "But when it is said, That all are subjected; it is evident that there is an exception of him who subjected the all to him; ²⁸ and when the all are subjected to him, then will the Son himself also be subjected to him who subjected the all to him that God may be the all in all. ²⁹ This being the case what will they do who are baptized for the dead? If they who are altogether dead are not raised up, why are they then baptized for the dead? ³⁰ and why are we every hour incurring danger ³¹ I dying daily? I swear by that boasting of yours" [meaning that which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord] ³² "if I as a man had fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is that to me if the dead are not raised up? Let us eat and drink, for to morrow we die." ³³ Be not led astray; "good morals are debauched by talk profane." ³⁴ Be righteously sober and sin not. For some have not a knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

³⁶ Simpleton! that which thou thyself sowest is not quickened unless it dieth.

⁴ For in great affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears"not that you should be grieved, but that you might know that overflowing love which I have for you. ⁵ Now if any one hath occasioned grief, he hath grieved me only as a partner in it; that I may not continue a burden on you all;

⁵ For when we arrived in Macedonia our flesh had no rest, but we were afflicted every way. Without were fightings; within, fears. ⁶ But God who comforteth them who are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

¹³ For such as they are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ Nor is this to be wondered at; for Satan himself putteth on the appearance of an angel of light: ¹⁵ No wonder, then, if his ministers transform themselves to appear like ministers of righteousness. But their end will be according to their works.

⁹ for we rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. And for this also we pray, namely the restoration of you to perfect order.

⁷ which is owing to nothing but this, that there are some who trouble you, and wish to pervert the glad tidings of the Christ. ⁸ But if we, or an angel from heaven, proclaim to you as glad tidings any thing different from what we have proclaimed to you, let him be an anathema. As we said before, ⁹ so I now say again, If any one teach you as glad tidings any thing different from what you have received, let him be anathema. ¹⁰ For do I now conciliate the favour of men rather than of God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

⁴ nor did I, [on account of the false brethren who had slily introduced themselves, and crept in, to spy out that liberty of ours which we have by Christ Jesus, that they might enslave us] ⁵ yield for a moment any submission to them, that the truth of the glad tidings might continue with you. ⁶ And with regard to those in high repute [what they were formerly doth not concern me: God accepteth not man's person; for these men of repute added nothing to me;

¹⁴ But when I saw that they were not walking uprightly, according to the truth of the glad tidings, I said to Peter before them all, "If thou being a Jew mayst live after the manner of the Gentiles, and not as the Jews do, why compellest thou .the Gentiles to conform to the rites of the Jews?

¹ Inconsiderate Galatians! who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth; you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ crucified was evidently represented among you? ² I wish to learn from you this only"Did you receive the spirit for works of law, or for the obedience of belief? ³ Are you so unwise? Having begun with spirit are you now perfecting your selves with flesh?

⁸ At the time indeed [a] An objection. [b] The answer. when you knew not God, you as slaves served things which are in reality.no gods; ⁹ but now when you know God, or rather when God hath owned you, how turn ye again to those weak and beggarly elements to which you degradingly desire again to be in bondage as before. ¹⁰ You observe days and months and seasons and years; ¹¹ I am afraid for you lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. ¹² Brethren be, I beseech you, as I, for I am as you were. You have not injured me at all; ¹³ and you know that when in a weakness of the flesh I proclaimed to you formerly the glad tidings; ¹⁴ with respect to that trial of mine, which I had in my flesh, you did not despise, nor with scorn reject, but received me as a messenger of God"as Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ What was then your felicitation! For I bear you witness, that if it had been possible you would have pulled out your very eyes and given them to me. ¹⁶ Am I then become your enemy, because I tell you truth? ¹⁷ They affect a zeal for you; not in an honourable way; but they wish to exclude us, that you may be zealous for them. ¹⁸ Now it is honourable to be zealously affected towards a good man at all times, and not barely when I am present with you. ¹⁹ My dear children, for whom I again suffer pangs until Christ be formed in you ²⁰ but I wish I could this moment be with you and change the tone of my voice, for I am in doubt about you

² Behold I Paul say to you, that if you be circumcised, Christ will avail .you nothing. ³ And I testify again to every man who is circumcised, that he is under an obligation to perform the whole law. ⁴ You who are justified by law, have done with the Christ"you have fallen from that favour.

² Bear one another's burdens and so fulfil the law of the Christ.

⁵ therefore not being able to bear any longer, I sent to know your faith, for fear the tempter might have tempted you, and our labour be in vain. ⁶ But Timothy having now come to us from you, and brought us the good news of your belief and love, and that you have always a good remembrance of us, earnestly desiring to see us, as we do to see you; ⁷ we therefore, brethren, under all our affliction and distress are comforted in respect to you, by your faith. ⁸ Now because we live if you continue stedfast in the Lord,

¹⁰ If any one cometh to you, and doth not bring this doctrine, receive him not into your family; nor wish him success; ¹¹ for he who wisheth him success is a partaker with him in his evil works.

³ Beloved, when I was using all diligence to write to you respecting the common salvation, I found a necessity to write to you, and exhort you to contend earnestly for the belief which was once for all delivered to the saints. ⁴ For Certain persons have slily crept in among us, who have been of old written of, and for this very crime, wicked men, who are turning the favour of our God into licentiousness, and denying our only sovereign God, and Lord Jesus Christ.

² I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and that thou canst not bear with them who are evil, and hast tried them who pretend to be apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars,

²⁰ but I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezabel, who calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.

¹⁵ I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot. I wish thou wert cold or hot. ¹⁶ So then; because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit thee out of my mouth, ¹⁷ because thou sayest, "I am rich and become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. ¹⁸ I advise thee to purchase of me gold tried in the fire that thou mayst be rich, and white raiment that thou mayst be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayst see.
