⁷ [Now if the ministration of death engraven in letters, on stones, was attended with such glory, that the children of Israel could not look steadily on the face of Moses, because of the temporary glory of his countenance;

²¹ And the Lord God made for Adam and his wife garments of skin and cloathed them.

¹² the Lord said to Moses, Come up to me on the mount and stay there and I will give thee the tables of stone, the law and the commandments which I have written to be promulgated to them.

¹⁸ Here he paused, and gave Moses, when he had ceased speaking to him on mount Sina, two tables of the testimony; tables of stone written with the finger of God.

¹⁵ Moses turned and went down from the mount with the two tables of the testimony in his hands. Now the tables were of stone written on both sides. On the one side and on the other they were written, ¹⁶ and the tables were the work of God. And the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tables.

¹⁹ And when he approached the camp and saw the young bull and the choirs, Moses being inflamed with wrath threw the two tables from his hands and broke them at the foot of the mount.

¹ Then the Lord said to Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like the first and come up to me on the mount, and I will write on those tables the words which were in the first tables which thou didst break;

²⁸ And Moses was there before the Lord forty days and forty nights. He did not eat bread nor drink water. And he wrote on the tables the words of the covenant; the ten commandments. ²⁹ And when Moses came down from the mount with the two tables in his hands, he did not know, while he was coming down from the mount, that the skin of his face had been irradiated with glory by his talking with him; ³⁰ but when Aaron and all the elders of Israel saw Moses, and that the skin of his face was irradiated with glory, they were afraid to approach him. ³¹ Whereupon Moses called them; and Aaron and all the chiefs of the congregation turned to him and Moses spoke to them. ³² And after that all the sons of Israel came to him; and he enjoined upon them all that the Lord had given him in charge on mount Sina. ³³ And when he had done speaking to them he put a veil on his face. ³⁴ But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak to him he took off the veil until he came out, and when he came out and rehearsed to all the children of Israel what the Lord commanded him ³⁵ [as the children of Israel saw that Moses' face was irradiated with glory therefore] Moses put the veil on his face until he should go in to speak to him.

⁸ And how great must the nation be, which hath such rules of rectitude, and such righteous judgments, as are contained in the whole law, which I this day lay before you.

¹³ And when he had declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments, he wrote them on two tables of stone.

²² These are the injunctions which the Lord delivered verbally, to all your congregation, at the mount, out of the midst of the fire. There was darkness, thick darkness, a turbid tempest, and a loud voice. And he added no more. And having written them on two tables of stone, he gave them to me.

⁹ When I went up the mountain to receive the tables of stone; the tables of the covenant which the Lord had made with you. Now I was on the mount forty days, and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water; ¹⁰ and the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, written with the finger of God: upon them indeed were written all the words which the Lord had spoken to you at the mount, on the day of the solemn assembly. ¹¹ And after the forty days, and the forty nights, when the Lord gave me the two tables of stone; the tables of the covenant,

¹⁵ Whereupon I turned, and came down from the mount. Now the mount was blazing with fire up to heaven, and I had in my two hands the two tables of the testimonies.

¹ At that time the Lord said to me, Hew thee out two tables of stone like the first, and come up to me on the mount; and thou shalt make thee an ark of wood, ² and thou shalt write on these tables the words which were on the first tables, which thou didst break, and shalt put them in the ark. ³ So when I had made an ark of incorruptible wood, and hewed two tables of stone, like the first, and had gone up the mount with the two tables in my hand; ⁴ and he had written on these tables, according to the former writing, the ten commandments, which the Lord spoke to you at the mount, out of the midst of the fire; and the Lord had given them to me,

¹³ thou camest down also on mount Sina and didst speak to them from heaven, and give them right judgments and laws of truth and statutes and good commandments.

⁷ The law of the Lord is perfect, it restoreth souls: The testimony of the Lord is faithful, it maketh infants wise. ⁸ The statutes of the Lord are right, they rejoice the heart. The commandment of the Lord is clear, it enlighteneth the eyes.

⁹⁷ MEM. O! how I have loved thy law, Lord! It is my meditation all the day.

¹²⁷ For this cause I loved thy commandments more than gold or the topaz. ¹²⁸ For this cause I directed my course to all thy commandments: I hated every evil way.

¹⁷⁴ Lord, I have longed earnestly for thy salvation: and thy law is my study.

²⁹ And while he was praying, the form of his countenance was changed, and his raiment was dazzling white. ³⁰ And behold two men conversed with him. These were Moses and Elias, ³¹ who appeared in glory, and spoke of that departure of his which he was soon to accomplish at Jerusalem.

¹⁵ And all who sat in the Sanhedrim, looking stedfastly at him, beheld his countenance, like the countenance of an angel.

¹⁵ For the law operateth to produce wrath; for where there is no law, there is no transgression.

¹⁰ So I found the commandment which was for life, to be for death.

¹² So that the law is indeed holy, and the commandment is holy, just and good. ¹³ Hath that then which is good been death to me? No, by no means. But sin, so that it appeared to be sin, continued working death for me by that which is good, so that sin appeared to be sin in the highest degree by the commandment. ¹⁴ For we know that the law is spiritual, but as for me, I being carnal, am sold to sin.

²² For in the inner man I am delighted with the law of God;

⁴ For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one who believeth:

¹⁰ but when perfection is come, there will a stop be put to that which is in part.

³ You are shewn publickly because you are the letter of Christ which we make use of. It is written, not with ink, but with the spirit of the living God; not on tables of stone, but on fleshly tables of the heart.

⁶ who hath qualified us to be ministers of a new covenant; not of letter but of spirit; for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

⁹ For if that ministration of condemnation was attended with glory, much more doth this ministration of justification abound in glory. ¹⁰ For that indeed which was glorious, is in this respect not glorious because of this super-excellent glory. ¹¹ For if that which was temporary was with glory, much more shall this which is permanent be attended with glory.

¹³ and do not [act] as Moses. He put a veil on his face, that the children of Israel might not look stedfastly to the end of that which is abolished. ¹⁴ Their minds were indeed blinded, for even to this day that very veil at the reading of the old covenant remaineth. That which is abolished by Christ is not unveiled,

⁴ containing a golden altar and the ark of the covenant, all overlaid with gold, in which was the golden urn containing the manna, and the staff of Aaron which budded, and the tables of the covenant,
