¹⁴ Form no associations with unbelievers; for what fellowship is there between righteousness and unrighteousness? What communion hath light with darkness?

¹⁶ and shouldst thou take their daughters for thy sons and give some of thy daughters to their sons, thy daughters may go a whoring after their gods and thy sons may go a whoring after their gods.

¹⁹ you shall keep my law. Thou shalt not let the cattle gender with one of another kind, nor plant thy vineyard with different sorts of seed; nor put on unscoured, a woven garment made of flax and wool.

² When the Lord thy God shall deliver them into thy hands, thou shalt smite them; thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt not make a covenant with them. You shall neither shew them mercy, ³ nor contract marriages with them. Thou shalt not give thy daughter to his son, nor take his daughter for thy son.

⁹ Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard, when the product of it is consecrated, with seed of another kind, that the seed which thou sowest may not be consecrated, with the product of thy vineyard. ¹⁰ Thou shalt not plough with an ox and an ass together. ¹¹ Thou shalt not wear, without scouring, a garment of wool and flax in the same piece.

² And the Philistines took the Ark of the Lord, and carried it into the temple of Dagon, and set it beside Dagon. ³ But when the Azotians arose in the morning, and went into the temple of Dagon, they looked, and lo! Dagon had fallen on its face before the ark of God. Thereupon they raised up Dagon, and set him in his place. But the hand of the Lord was heavy on the Azotians; and he afflicted them, and smote them in the hinder parts, throughout Azotus and its territories.

²¹ to them, How long will you halt between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him: but if Baal; follow him. But the people made no reply.

² .Jehu the son of Anani the prophet, went out to meet him, and said to him, King Josaphat, dost thou aid a sinner, or form friendship with one hated by the Lord? On this account there would have been wrath against thee,

¹ When these things were done, the chiefs came to me and said, The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the. neighbouring tribes. In their abominations, the Ethites, the Pherezites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, and the Moserites, and the Amorites, are the same with the Chananites. ² For they have taken some of their daughters for themselves, and their sons; and the holy seed is mingled with the tribes of the neighbouring regions. And the hand of the chiefs is principally concerned in this transgression.

¹¹ which thou gavest us by the ministry of thy servants, the prophets, saying, The land which you are going to possess, is a land subject to change by the removal of the people of the nations for their abominations, with the filth of which they have filled it from one end to the other; ¹² now therefore, give not your daughters to their sons, nor take any of their daughters for your sons; nor shall you seek their peace or their welfare forever, that you may be strong, and eat the good things of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.

¹⁹ and they gave their hand to put away their wives, and offered a trespass ram of the flock, for their transgression:

¹ On reading that day in the book of Moses in the audience of the people, it was found written therein, that the Ammonites and the Moabites should not enter into the congregation of God forever; ² because they did not meet the Israelites with bread and water; but hired Balaam against them to curse them; but our God turned the curse into a blessing. ³ And when they heard the law, they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

²³ In those days also I saw the Jews who had married wives of Azotus, of Ammon, and of Moab, ²⁴ and their children spoke half in the dialect of Azotus, and did not know how to speak the Jewish language; ²⁵ and I .quarrelled with them, and reproached them, and smote some men among them, and caused some of them to be shaved, and adjured them by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take any of their daughters for your sons. ²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by doing so? Though among many nations there was not a king like him? Though he was beloved by God, and God had made him king over all Israel, yet strange women led him astray.

³ By the hallowed things in this land of his he had marvellously displayed all his designs.

⁴ I did not sit with the council of vanity; nor can I go with them who transgress: ⁵ I hated the assembly of evil doers; and with the ungodly I cannot sit.

⁹ Destroy not my soul with the wicked nor my life with blood thirsty men; ¹⁰ in whose hands are iniquities; and whose right hand is full of bribes.

²⁰ Have we forgotten the name of our God; or have we stretched out our hands to a strange god? Will not God search out these things, ²¹ for he knoweth the secrets of the heart?

³ I have not set any wicked thing before mine eyes: them who commit transgressions I detested. ⁴ A perverse heart hath not cleaved to me. When the wicked withdrew from me; I no more acknowledged him. ⁵ Him, who privily slandered his neighbour, I expelled. With one of a haughty eye and unsatiable heart I would not eat.

³⁵ but mingled with those nations; and learned their works.

⁶³ I am a companion of all them who fear thee; and of them who keep thy commandments.

²¹ Have I not, Lord, hated them who hate thee; and been melted for them who are thine enemies! ²² With perfect hatred I have hated them; I have accounted them mine enemies.

¹⁸ With me are riches and glory; even great possessions and righteousness. ¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold and precious stones: and my productions are better than choice silver.

²⁴ Have no fellowship with a man addicted to wrath; nor lodge with a friend who is passionate:

²⁷ A righteous man is an abomination to an unjust man: and a straight course is an abomination to a transgressor.

¹¹ Juda was forsaken. There was indeed abomination in Israel and in Jerusalem, because Juda profaned the holy things of the Lord in which he delighted and studiously went after strange gods.

¹⁵ Now did not he who had the residue of spirit, do right? Yet you have said, "What else but a seed doth God require?" But keep this in your mind, "Thou must not forsake the wife of thy youth."

⁷ The world cannot hate you: but it hateth me, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.

¹⁸ If the world hate you, consider that it hated me before you. ¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. Now because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

²³ So, being discharged, they went to their brethren and told them all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them;

¹² The night is far spent; the day is drawing on; let us therefore put off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light; ¹³ and let us walk as in day light, in a becoming manner; not in revels and drunken debauches; not in dalliance and wantonness; not in strife and envy; ¹⁴ but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh to fulfil its desires.

⁹ I wrote to you in that letter not to associate with fornicators,

³⁹ A wife is bound by law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband die; she is at liberty to many whom she will; only in the Lord.

²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons.

³³ Be not led astray; "good morals are debauched by talk profane."

¹⁷ This therefore I say and testify in the Lord, that you no more walk, as the rest of the nations do, in the vanity of their mind. ¹⁸ They having their understandings darkened, being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance which is in them, by reason of the blindness of their heart, ¹⁹ have without remorse abandoned themselves to the commission of every uncleanness with inordinate desire. ²⁰ But you have not thus learned the Christ;

⁶ Let no one deceive you with vain discourses; for on the account of these things the wrath of God is coining on these children of disobedience, ⁷ be not ye8 therefore partakers with them. ⁸ For you were formerly darkness, but being now a light in the Lord, walk as children of light ⁹ [for the fruit of this light consists of goodness and righteousness and truth of every sort] ¹⁰ proving what is well pleasing to the Lord. ¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them: ¹² for as to the things done by them in secret, it is shameful even to mention them. ¹³ But all these reprehensible things are exposed to view by the light. For it is light which exposeth every thing to view; ¹⁴ therefore it is said, "Awake thou who sleepest and arise from the dead and the Christ will shine upon thee.

¹⁵ that you may be blameless and sincere, spotless children of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, amongst whom shine ye forth as lights in the world,

⁴ But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that this day should break upon you at unawares as a thief. ⁵ You are all children of light and children of the day. We are not of night, nor of darkness. ⁶ Therefore let us not sleep as others do; but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they who sleep, sleep at night; and they who get drunk are drunk at night. ⁸ But as we are of the day, let us be sober, arming ourselves with the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet with the hope of salvation.

⁴ Ye adulterers and adulteresses! do you not know that the friendship of this world is enmity against God? Whoever therefore wisheth to be a friend of the world is adjudged an enemy of God.

⁹ but you being a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people peculiarly set apart that you may publish the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light ¹⁰ you who formerly were not a people but are now the people of God who were uncompassionated, but are now compassionated

² to the end that he may no longer live the rest of his time in flesh for the lusts of men; but for the will of God. ³ For the past time of this life sufficeth to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, inordinate desires, excess of wine, revels, carouses, and abominable idolatries; ⁴ at this they are surprized; and when you do not run with them into the same sink of debauchery, they rail.

⁵ This indeed is the message which we have heard from him, and announce to you, That God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. ⁶ If we say that we have communion with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practise truth. ⁷ But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have communion with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanseth us from all sin.

¹² and not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And why did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. ¹³ Wonder not, my brethren, if the world hate you. ¹⁴ We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who loveth not his brother abideth in death.
