²² Then Pharao gave orders to all his people saying, Every male child which is born to the Hebrews you shall throw into the river, but preserve every female alive.

¹ But it happened that at the end of two years Pharao had a dream. He thought he was standing by the river;

¹⁶ and said, When you do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women and they are delivered, if it be a male child, kill it; but if it be a female preserve it alive.

¹⁹ Moreover the Lord said to Moses, Say to thy brother Aaron, Take thy staff in thy hand and stretch forth thy hand against the waters of Egypt, against the rivers and against the canals and against their ponds and against all their reservoirs of water; and they shall become blood, and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt both in the cisterns of wood and in those of stone. ²⁰ So Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded them. And lifting up his staff he smote the water in the river in the presence of Pharao and before all his attendants and changed all the water of the river into blood. ²¹ And the fishes which were in the river died. And the river stunk so that the Egyptians could not drink the water of the river. And there was blood in all the land of Egypt.

¹⁶ for they cannot sleep. Unless they do evil; their sleep is taken from them and they cannot lie down to rest.

⁴ Wrath is cruel and anger outrageous: but nothing can withstand envy.

¹⁹ This king, mischievously politic against our family, ill treated our fathers, causing their children to be ex posed that they might not be preserved alive.

⁴ And the third angel poured out his vial on the rivers, and on the fountains of waters; and they became blood. ⁵ And I heard the angel of the waters saying, Righteous art thou, O Lord, who art and who wast and who art to come, because thou hast passed these judgments. ⁶ Because they poured out the blood of thy saints and prophets, therefore thou hast given them blood to drink, for they deserve it.
