² And an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a fire blazing out of a bush. And when he saw that the bush blazed with fire, but was not consumed,

¹³ and it was said to Abram, Know assuredly that thy seed shall sojourn in a land not their own. And they shall be enslaved and afflicted and humbled. Four hundred years. ¹⁴ But the nation which they shall serve I will judge. And after that they shall come out hither with much wealth. ¹⁵ Thou indeed shalt go to thy fathers in peace, having been nourished in a good old age. ¹⁶ And in the fourth generation they shall be brought back hither. For the sins of the Amorites have not yet come to the full. ¹⁷ And as the sun was setting there was a flash of fire, and lo! a smoking furnace and lamps of fire passed between the halved parts.

⁷ But an angel of the Lord found her at the fountain of water in the wilderness; at the fountain in the way to Sour. ⁸ And the angel of the Lord said to her, Agar, thou servant of Sara, whence comest thou and whither art thou going? And she said I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sara. ⁹ And the angel of the Lord said to her, Return to thy mistress and submit to her authority. ¹⁰ Moreover the angel of the Lord said to her, I will multiply thy seed so that it shall not be numbered on account of the multitude of it. ¹¹ Furthermore the angel of the Lord said to her, Behold thou art with child, and thou shalt bear a son and shalt call his name Ismael; for the Lord hath hearkened to thy affliction. ¹² He will be a wild man. His hands will be against all, and the hands of all, against him. And he shall dwell in front of all his brethren." ¹³ So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, "Thou the God who lookest upon me;" for said she, I saw plainly him who appeared to me;

¹⁵ Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, ¹⁶ saying, By myself I have sworn, saith the Lord, Because thou hast done this, and for my sake hast not spared thy beloved son;

¹⁶ the Angel who delivered me from all evils, bless these children! And let them be called by my name and by the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaak; and may they be increased to a great multitude on the earth!

⁴ But when the Lord saw that he drew near to look; the Lord called to him out of the bush saying, Moses! Moses! And he said, What is it? ⁵ And he said, Approach not hither. Loose the sandals from thy feet; for the place where thou standest is holy ground. ⁶ Then he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. Whereupon Moses turned away his face; for he was afraid to look forward in the presence of God. ⁷ And the Lord said to Moses, I have indeed seen the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their cry on the account of their task masters; for I know their sorrow, ⁸ therefore I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them out of that land, and conduct them to a land good and spacious; to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the country of the Chananites and the Chettites and the Amorites, and the Pherezites, and the Gergasites and the Evites and the Jebusites. ⁹ And now behold the cry of the children of Israel hath reached me and I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them, ¹⁰ now therefore come: I will send thee to Pharao king of Egypt and thou shalt bring my people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.

¹⁶ Go therefore and assemble the Senate of the children of Israel and say to them, The Lord, the God of our fathers hath appeared to me, even the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob saying, With watchfulness I have observed you and all that hath befallen you in Egypt.

²⁰ God hath indeed taken you and brought you out of the land of Egypt; out of the iron furnace; out of Egypt, to be to him a chosen people, as at this day;

¹⁶ So may the things acceptable To him who appeared in the bush, Come upon the head of Joseph; He indeed is glorified In being the head over brothers.

¹² thou didst mount men over our heads; we have passed through fire and water. But thou hast brought us to a place of rest.

² therefore when thou passest through water, I am with thee, and the streams shall not overwhelm thee: and when thou passest through fire, thou shalt not be burned up; the flame shall not quite consume thee.

¹⁰ and the Lord determined to purify him from this stroke: when his soul shall be given up for a sin offering; of you he shall see a seed which shall prolong their days. ¹¹ More over it is the determination of the Lord to remove him from the trouble of his soul; to shew him light and fashion him for knowledge; to justify the Righteous One who is serving many well, when he shall bear away their sins;

⁹ It was not an ambassador nor a messenger; but he himself saved them. Through his love and his indulgence to them, he himself redeemed them and took them up, and exalted them all the days of old.

²⁷ And the satraps and the generals and the governors and the mighty men of the king gathered round and viewed the men with astonishment; for the fire had not had any power over their body. Even the hair of their heads was not singed, nor were their mantles changed, nor a smell of fire on them.

⁴ He indeed wrestled with an angel and prevailed. Have they wept or have they supplicated me? Have they found me in the house of On? Or have they been spoken to there? ⁵ The Lord God Almighty was to be his memorial:

⁷ Awake, sword, against my shepherds, and against my chief citizen, saith the Lord Almighty; I will smite the shepherds and the sheep shall be scattered and I will bring my hand on the little ones.

¹ Behold I am about to send my messenger and he will examine the way before me. And the Lord whom ye seek; even the angel of the covenant whom you desire will come suddenly to his temple. Behold he is coming, saith the Lord Almighty.

²⁶ Now with respect to the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, how God spake in the bush to him, saying, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob.

³⁷ Now that the dead are raised up, even Moses hath plainly shewn; as at the bush he stileth the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob.

¹⁴ Now the Word became incarnate, and dwelt as in a tent among us, and we beheld his glory; a glory as of an only begotten from the father. He was full of grace and truth.

³⁰ And when forty years were completed, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness at mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush, ³¹ which when Moses saw, he was astonished at the vision. And as he was going near to view it, there came a voice of the Lord to him, ³² "I am the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob." Upon which Moses trembled and durst not view it. ³³ Then the Lord said to him, Loose the sandals from thy feet, for the place where thou standest is holy ground. ³⁴ I have indeed seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and have heard their groaning and am come down to deliver them. Now therefore come, I will send thee to Egypt. ³⁵ This Moses whom they rejected, saying, Who made thee a chief and a judge? this very person God sent as a chief and a deliverer by the hand of an angel who appeared to him in the bush

³ for as it was out of the power of the law to do this, inasmuch as it was weak through the flesh, God having sent his own son in a likeness of sinful flesh, and to be a sin offering, hath condemned this sin in the flesh,

⁸ For we do not, brethren, wish you to be ignorant with respect to that affliction of ours which befel us in Asia; that we were exceedingly pressed beyond our strength, so that we had indeed no hopes of life; ⁹ but had in ourselves the sentence of death, that we might not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead, ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will still deliver us,
