¹¹ And I will come out at his commands; for I have kept his ways, and will not turn aside from his commands,

² and now behold the king goeth out before you. As for me, I am grown old, therefore I will stay at home. And as for my sons, behold they are among you. With regard to myself, behold I have gone out before you from my youth even to this day. ³ Here I am. Bring your complaints against me before the Lord, and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom among you have I oppressed? or whom have I aggrieved? or from whose hand have I taken a bribe, even to a shoe latchet? Witness against me, and I will make you restitution. ⁴ Thereupon they said to Samuel, Thou hast not injured us; nor tyrannised over us; nor afflicted us; nor taken any thing from the hand of any man. ⁵ Then Samuel said to the people, The Lord is a witness among you, and his anointed is this day a witness, that you have found nothing in my hand. And they said, He is a witness.

⁹ Now the righteous should prevail over the wicked: and he who is faithful should hold on his way: and he who hath clean hands should take courage.

⁵ Establish my footsteps in thy paths; that my footsteps may not be moved.

²⁰ The Lord will reward me according to my righteousness, and recompense me according to the cleanness of my hands. ²¹ Because I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God; ²² because all his judgments were before me, and his rules of rectitude were not far from me; ²³ therefore with him I shall be unblemished, and I will guard myself from mine iniquity; ²⁴ and the Lord will reward me according to my righteousness, and according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He would not be wise to do good.

¹⁸ Though our heart hath not turned back, yet thou hast turned our steps from thy way.

⁵ But them who turn aside into crooked ways, the Lord will drive away with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel!

⁶ and them who turn aside from the Lord, and them who seek not the Lord, and them who cleave not to him.

¹³ By the rocky ground are meant those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but not having it rooted in them, they are but temporary believers, and in time of trial apostatise. ¹⁴ The ground overrun with thorns denoteth them who hear, and who going away are choaked with cares and riches and the pleasurable enjoyments of life, so that they do not bring fruit to perfection. ¹⁵ But by the good ground are meant they, who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, retain it, and perseveringly bring forth fruit.

¹⁸ And when they came to him, he said to them, You know how from my first coming into Asia, I have been with you all the time, ¹⁹ serving the Lord with all humility, and with many tears and trials which befel me by the insidious practices of the Jews;

³³ I have coveted no man's silver or gold, or raiment. ³⁴ Even you yourselves know that these very hands have ministered to my wants, and to the supply of them who were with me.

⁷ to them who by perseverance in well-doing, seek for glory and honour, and incorruption [he will grant] everlasting life;

¹² For this is the matter of our boasting; the testimony of our conscience, that with simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and more especially towards you.

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and God is witness, how holy, how just, how irreproachable our behaviour was to you who believed

²⁰ For if alter fleeing from the pollutions of the world by an acknowledgment of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, any are again entangled and overcome by them, the last state of such persons is worse than the first. ²¹ For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. ²² But it hath happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog is returned to his vomit," and "the washed hog to its wallowing slough."
