⁵¹ Let mine eye be more watchful for my life, than all the daughters of a city.

³ So when David and his men came to the city, and saw that it was burned with fire, and that their wives, and their sons, and their daughters were taken captive, ⁴ David and his men raised their voices, and wept till they had no more power to weep.

¹⁹ [p] My bowels! my bowels are pained! and every sensation of my heart. My soul throbbeth! my heart is torn. I cannot keep silence; for my soul hath heard the trumpet's sound; the din of war and of distress. ²⁰ It calleth for contrition; for the whole land is in deep distress. My tent is suddenly whelmed in ruin; my curtains are rent to pieces. How long shall I see men fleeing! ²¹ How long hear the sound of trumpets!

²² "Behold I will punish them. Their young men shall die by the sword. And their sons and their daughters shall die by famine.

¹⁶ And the people to whom they prophesy, with their wives and their sons and their daughters, shall, by reason of the sword and the famine, be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem; and there shall be none to bury them, when I pour out these evils on them.

¹⁸ [p] If I go out into the field, behold the slain of the sword! and if I go into the city; behold the distress of famine! Seeing priest and prophet are gone to a land which they knew not:

⁹ They shall indeed eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat, every one, the flesh of his neighbour, in the blockade and siege with which their enemies shall besiege them."

¹⁸ [s] The Lord is righteous; for against his express commandment I rebelled. Hear I beseech you all ye peoples and behold my sorrow! my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

²¹ On the high way lie the youth and the elder. My virgins and my young men are gone into captivity; with sword and with famine thou hast slain; in the day of thine anger thou hast slaughtered and hast not spared.

¹¹ Our wives are humbled in Sion; our virgins in the cities of Juda.

⁴¹ And as he drew near he viewed the city and wept over it, ⁴² saying, O that thou hadst known; even thou; even in this very ay of thine, the things which were for thy peace! But now they are hidden from thine eyes. ⁴³ For days will come upon thee, when thine enemies will surround thee with a rampire; and enclose thee; and shut thee up on every side; ⁴⁴ and dash thee to the ground, and thy children within thee; and not leave one stone on another; because thou didst not know the time of this thy visitation.
