¹ Whereas many have undertaken to compose a history of those things which have been accomplished among us, ² as they who were from the beginning eye witnesses, and are ministers of the word, have delivered them to us; ³ it seemed good to me. also, when I had accurately traced every thing from the very first, immediately afterwards to write to thee, most excellent Theophilus, ⁴ that thou mayst know the certainty of those doctrines in which thou hast been instructed. ⁵ In the days of Herod, the king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia; and his wife, whose name was Elizabeth, was of the race of Aaron. ⁶ They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and precepts of the Lord, without blame. ⁷ Now they had no child, as Elizabeth was barren. And they were both advanced in years. ⁸ And it came to pass that when he was performing the priest's office before God, in the order of his course, ⁹ it fell to his lot, according to the order of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord, to burn incense, ¹⁰ while the whole multitude of the people were praying without, at the time of the incense offering. ¹¹ And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense, ¹² at the sight of whom Zacharias was greatly discomposed and terrified. ¹³ Whereupon the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias; for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife, Elizabeth, will bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. ¹⁴ He will indeed be to thee matter of joy and exultation; and many will rejoice at his birth. ¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must not drink wine, nor any fermented liquor. With a holy spirit he will be filled, even from his mother's womb. ¹⁶ And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ He will go before in his presence, with the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and prepare disobedient persons, by a deep sense of righteous things, to be for the Lord a well disposed people. ¹⁸ Thereupon Zacharias said to the angel, How can I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years. ¹⁹ In reply to which, the angel said to him, I am Gabriel, who attend in the presence of God: and I am sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee these glad tidings. ²⁰ Now, behold, thou shalt be dumb and unable to speak, until the day when these tidings shall be accomplished; because thou hast not believed my words, which shall be confirmed in their season. ²¹ Now the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondered at his tarrying so long in the temple. ²² And when he came out, he could not speak to them. So they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he made signs to them and continued deaf and dumb. ²³ And when the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. ²⁴ And after these days, his wife Elizabeth conceived; and kept herself retired five months, saying, ²⁵ The Lord hath dealt thus with me in the days in which he looked on me to take away my reproach among men. ²⁶ Arid in the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, ²⁷ to a virgin contracted to a man, whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. ²⁸ And when the angel entered, he said to her, Hail, favourite of heaven! The Lord is with thee! Blessed thou among women! ²⁹ Upon seeing him she was greatly discomposed at his speech, and revolved in her mind what sort of a salutation this might be. ³⁰ Whereupon the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary. For thou hast found favour with God. ³¹ Now behold thou shall conceive, and bear a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. ³² He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. ³³ And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. And of his kingdom there shall be no end. ³⁴ Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I know not man. ³⁵ And the angel answering, said to her, A holy spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee, therefore the holy offspring will be called the son of God. ³⁶ Now behold Elizabeth thy cousin, even she hath conceived a son in her old age. And this is the sixth month with her, who hath been called barren. ³⁷ For with God nothing is impossible. ³⁸ Thereupon Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it to me according to thy word. ³⁹ And the angel left her. And in those days Mary set out and travelled with speed to the hill country, to a city of Juda, ⁴⁰ and went to the house of Zacharias and saluted Elizabeth. ⁴¹ And soon as Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb: and Elizabeth was filled with a holy spirit, ⁴² and with a loud acclamation said, Blessed thou among women! and blessed the fruit of thy womb. ⁴³ How have I this honour, that the mother of my Lord should come to me! ⁴⁴ For behold! soon as the sound of thy salutation reached mine ear, the babe within me leaped for joy. ⁴⁵ Happy indeed is she who believed that there shall be an accomplishment of the things spoken to her from the Lord. ⁴⁶ Then Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord: ⁴⁷ and my spirit exulteth in God, my Saviour: ⁴⁸ because he hath regarded the low condition of his handmaid. For behold! henceforth all generations will call me happy. ⁴⁹ Because the Mighty One hath done great things for me; therefore hallowed be his name. ⁵⁰ Indeed his mercy on them who fear him, extendeth to generations of generations. ⁵¹ With his arm he hath displayed strength. He hath scattered them who were elated with the imagination of their heart. ⁵² From thrones he hath hurled potentates, and exalted them of low degree. ⁵³ He hath filled the hungry with good things; and sent away the rich empty. ⁵⁴ He hath supported his servant Israel, remembering [as he spoke to our fathers] mercy ⁵⁵ for Abraham and his seed forever. ⁵⁶ And Mary abode with her about three months, and then returned home. ⁵⁷ Now when the time for Elizabeth's delivery was come, she8 brought forth a son. ⁵⁸ And her neighbours and her relations, hearing that the Lord had magnified his mercy to her, rejoiced with her. ⁵⁹ And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. ⁶⁰ But his mother interposing, said, No. He shall be called John. ⁶¹ And they said to her, There is none among thy kindred who is called by that name. ⁶² Then they made signs to his father to know what he would have him called. ⁶³ And he, having demanded a table book, wrote, saying, His name is John. At which they were all surprised. ⁶⁴ And his mouth was immediately opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, praising God. ⁶⁵ And all in the neighbourhood were struck with awe. And the fame of all these things spread through the whole hill country of Judea. ⁶⁶ And all who heard laid them up in their mind, saying, What will this child be? And the hand of the Lord was with him. ⁶⁷ And Zacharias his father was filled with a holy spirit, and he prophesied, saying, ⁶⁸ Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; because he hath visited and delivered his people. ⁶⁹ He indeed hath raised up for us a horn of salvation in the house of his servant David ⁷⁰ [as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets of old] ⁷¹ a deliverance from our enemies, and out of the hand of all who hate us ⁷² in kindness to our fathers, and in remembrance of his holy covenant ⁷³ [as he sware to our father Abraham] ⁷⁴ that he would grant us, that we, being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, may serve him without fear, ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. ⁷⁶ Now as for thee, child, thou shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shall go before in the presence of the Lord, to prepare his ways; ⁷⁷ to give his people a knowledge of salvation, by a remission of their sins, ⁷⁸ through the tender mercy of our God, by which the Anatole [the day spring] from on high hath visited us ⁷⁹ to give light to them who are sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet to the way of peace." ⁸⁰ And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of the manifestation of him to Israel.

³¹ But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing, you may have life by his name.

¹ Composed, O Theophilus, the former treatise concerning all that Jesus took occasion both to do and teach ² till the day when he was taken up, after giving a charge by the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen, ³ and to whom he had, after his suffering, shewn himself to be alive, by many proofs, during forty days appearing to them, and speaking of what concerned the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ [and unquestionably great is the mystery of this religion,] God hath been manifested in flesh, justified by spirit, hath appeared to messengers, been proclaimed among nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, that the proclamation might be made completely by me, and that all the nations might hear it. And I was delivered out of the mouth of a lion.

¹⁶ For we indeed did not follow artfully contrived fables when we made known to you the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; but were ourselves eye witnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For he was receiving honour and glory from God the Father, when a voice was uttered to him, from the transcendent glory, "This is my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased." ¹⁸ This voice we ourselves actually heard uttered from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain. ¹⁹ Therefore we have a more complete confirmation of the prophetic word, to which you do well in giving attention, as to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawn, and the bringer of light rise in your hearts;

¹ The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God

¹⁴ The sower soweth the word.

⁴⁸ Now you are witnesses of these things.

²⁷ And as for you, bear ye witness also, because you have been with me from the beginning.

³ and to whom he had, after his suffering, shewn himself to be alive, by many proofs, during forty days appearing to them, and speaking of what concerned the kingdom of God.

⁸ But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and you shall be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

²¹ It is necessary therefore, that one of these men who have accompanied us, during all the time that the Lord Jesus came in and went out over us, ²² beginning from the baptism of John to the day on which he was taken up from us, should be a witness with us of his resurrection.

²⁰ For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

³⁹ and we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; Him, whom they slew, suspending him on a cross ⁴⁰ even him God raised up the third day, and granted him to become manifest, ⁴¹ not to all the people, but to witnesses who were preappointed by God; to us who have eaten, and drunk with him after he arose from the dead.

¹⁶ But arise, and stand on thy feet; for I have appeared to thee for this purpose, to appoint thee a minister and a witness of the things which thou hast seen, and of the things for which I will appear to thee,

¹⁶ that I should be a ministering servant of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, and employed in the holy service of dispensing the glad tidings of God, that the offering of the Gentiles may be accepted, being hallowed by a holy spirit.

¹ In this manner let a man reckon us, as servants of Christ and stewards of divine mysteries.

⁷ of which I was made a minister according to the free gift of God's favour which was granted to me; according to the energy of his power. ⁸ To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this favour was granted to proclaim among the nations the unsearchable riches of the Christ,

¹¹ and he hath given some to be apostles, and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors, and teachers, ¹² for the fitting up of the saints; for the work of distribution; for the building up of the body of the Christ,

²³ provided you continue in this belief, grounded and settled, and are not moved away from the hope of the glad tidings which you have heard, which have been proclaimed to this whole creation under heaven, of which I Paul was made a minister. ²⁴ Now I rejoice in these sufferings of mine for you, and am in my turn making up in my flesh the remainders of the sufferings of the Christ, for his body, namely, the congregation ²⁵ of which I was made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which was committed to me for you, to confirm the word of God

³ how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation, which was first published by the Lord, and confirmed for us by them who heard him,

¹ With regard to the elders among you, being myself a fellow elder, and a witness of the sufferings of the Christ, and a partaker of the glory about to be revealed, I give them this exhortation

¹⁶ For we indeed did not follow artfully contrived fables when we made known to you the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; but were ourselves eye witnesses of his majesty.

¹ What was from the beginning; what we have heard; what we have seen with our eyes; what we have viewed attentively, and our hands have handled [with respect also to the word of the life ² even the life was manifested, and we have seen, and testify, and announce to you, that eternal life which was with the Father, and hath been clearly manifested to us] ³ that which we have seen and heard, we announce to you, that you also may have communion with us. Now this communion of ours is with the Father, and with his son Jesus Christ.

⁵ Many are thy wonders which thou, Lord my God, hast wrought; and for thy thoughts there is none to be compared to thee. I have declared and spoken. They are multiplied beyond computation.

²¹ These things thou hast done and I was silent. Thou unjustly didst suppose that I would be like thyself. I will reprove thee and set things in order before thee.

⁹ And moreover, because the preacher was wise, because he taught mankind wisdom; that the ear might find what is comely from parables,

⁴ Thereupon Peter stated to them the whole affair in order from the beginning, saying,

¹⁹ therefore it is my judgement not to disquiet those of the Gentiles who turn to God;

²⁵ we being all of one mind determined that after making a choice, we would send men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

²⁸ For it hath seemed good to the holy spirit and to us to lay upon you, over and above the things absolutely necessary, no more burden than these.

²⁶ Claudius Lysias to his excellency general Felix, health and happiness.

³ we on all occasions and every where acknowledge this, most excellent Felix, with all gratitude.

²⁵ To which he replied, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but am speaking the words of truth and soberness.

⁴⁰ But she is happier, if she continue as she is. This is my opinion, and I think I have a spirit of God.

¹² Now with respect to Apollos the brother, I importuned him much to go to you with the brethren. Though upon the whole it was not his will to go now, yet he will go when there shall be a favourable opportunity.

²⁵ This man being well versed in the scriptures, had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and expounded accurately the passages concerning the Lord, being acquainted only with the baptism of John.

¹⁸ and knowest his will, and triest things which differ, being instructed out of the law,

¹⁹ but in a congregation I would rather speak five words with my understanding that I may instruct others, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

⁶ Let him who is taught the word make him who teacheth a partaker in all good things.

¹⁵ and I will use all diligence that you may be able, every one of you, to recollect these things after my departure. ¹⁶ For we indeed did not follow artfully contrived fables when we made known to you the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; but were ourselves eye witnesses of his majesty.

¹⁰ the seventh for Kos; the eighth for Abia;

¹⁹ This was the review of them according to their service, to go into the house of the Lord according to the rule prescribed for them, under the inspection of Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel commanded Moses.

¹ After the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold there came magians from the east2 to Jerusalem,

⁹ Now these are the generations of Noe. Noe was a just man; and being perfect in the tenor of his life, Noe pleased God.

¹ and when he had done so, the Lord God said to Noe, "Go into the ark, thou and all thy family, for I have seen thee righteous before me in this generation.

⁸ And the Lord said to him, Hast thou harboured in thy mind any thing against my servant Job? For there is not like him on the earth, a man unblameable, true, pious, abstaining from every thing evil.

² Of a truth I know that it is so. For how can a mortal be righteous with the Lord?

⁶ Then I cannot be put to shame, when I have respect to all thy commandments.

¹⁵ Whereupon he said to them, You are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts. Because that which is high among men, is an abomination in the sight of God,

¹ Then Paul having fixed his eyes on the Sanhedrim said, Men, brethren, I have conducted myself with an entire good conscience as a subject of God even to this day.

¹⁶ and with this I exercise myself to have a conscience void of offence before God and men continually.

⁹ What preference then have we? None at all. For we have before charged both Jews and Greeks with being all under sin; ¹⁰ as it is written, "There is none righteous, no, not one. ¹¹ There is none who hath understanding. There is none who seeketh God. ¹² They are all gone aside; They are all together become vile; There is none who doth good; no, not one. ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre. With their tongues they practised deceit. The poison of asps is under the lips of them, ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. ¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood. ¹⁶ Destruction and misery are in their ways. ¹⁷ And the way of peace they did not know. ¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes". ¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God. ²⁰ Because no flesh can be justified before him by works of law; for by law there is a knowledge of sin, ²¹ now therefore, independency of law, there is made manifest a justification of God's appointment, attested by the law and the prophets ²² even a justification, of God's appointment, by faith in Jesus Christ, for all and upon all who believe; for there is no distinction; ²³ for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. ²⁴ They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption which is by Christ Jesus, ²⁵ whom God heretofore exhibited as a mercy seat by faith in his blood, that, on account of the remission of past sins, during the forbearance of God,

² Now, I praise you, brethren, that in all things you are mindful of me and hold fast the doctrines as I delivered them to you;

¹² For this is the matter of our boasting; the testimony of our conscience, that with simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and more especially towards you.

¹⁵ that you may be blameless and sincere, spotless children of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, amongst whom shine ye forth as lights in the world,

⁶ with respect to zeal, a persecutor of the congregation; with respect to righteousness which is by law, blameless; ⁷ yet what were gain to me these I have counted refuse on account of the Christ ⁸ nay more, I do therefore indeed count all things but refuse, on account of the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have given up all and account them but dregs, that I may gain Christ ⁹ and be found in him, not having for my righteousness, that which is of the law, but that which is by a belief in Christ"that which is of God"a righteousness for this belief.

²² by the body of his flesh by his death, to present you holy and without blemish, and exempt from accusation in his sight,

¹³ so as to establish your hearts unblameable in holiness, in the presence of our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his holy ones.

¹¹ For the favour of God which is for salvation hath been brightly displayed for all men ¹² teaching us in order that we, renouncing impiety and worldly lusts, may live soberly and righteously and piously in this present world, ¹³ waiting for the blessed hope and the bright display of the glory of the great God, and saviour of us Jesus Christ, ¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

³ For we, even we ourselves were formerly foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to divers lusts and pleasures living in malice and envy, objects of hatred, hating one another; ⁴ but when the kindness and love of God our saviour for man was brightly displayed, ⁵ not for works of righteousness which we had done, but according to his own mercy; he saved us by a bath of regeneration, and a renewal of a holy spirit, ⁶ which he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our saviour, ⁷ in order that we, being pardoned by his favour, might become expectant heirs of everlasting life.

¹⁴ As you therefore, beloved, expect these things, use all diligence to be found at peace with him, without spot and without blemish;

³ Now by this we know that we have known him, if we keep his commandments.

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that every one who practiseth righteousness is born of him.

⁷ Children, let no one deceive you. He who practiseth righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.

² Whereupon Abram said, sovereign Lord, what wilt thou give me, seeing I die childless, and the son of Masek my servant, this Damascus Eliezer; ³ Then Abram said, seeing thou hast not given me seed, this servant of mine is to be my heir.

¹ Still Sara, the wife of Abram, did not bear him children; so having an Egyptian servant whose name was Agar, ² Sara said to Abram, Behold the Lord hath shut me up that I may not bear. Go in therefore to my maid that I may have children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sara.

¹⁷ Upon this Abraham fell on his face and smiled, and said in his heart, To him who is in his hundredth year shall a son be born? and shall Sarah bring forth in her ninetieth year?

¹¹ [Now Abraham and Sarah were far advanced in life, and it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.]

²¹ And Isaak intreated the Lord for Rebekka his wife because she was barren, and the Lord hearkened to him; And Rebekka his wife conceived

¹ Now when Rachel saw that she bore no children to Jacob, she envied her sister and said to Jacob, Give me children, else I shall die.

² Now there was a man of Saraa, a community of the Danites, whose name was Manoe; and his wife was barren, and never had a child. ³ And an angel of the Lord appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold, thou art barren and hast never had a child. But thou shalt conceive a son.

² And he had two wives. The name of the one was Anna, and the name of the other Phennana.

⁵ and to Anna he gave one portion, because she had not a child. Nevertheless, Elkana loved Anna more than the other, though the Lord had shut up her womb. ⁶ But because the Lord had not given her a child, such was her affliction and anxiety on the account of this, that she became disconsolate, because the Lord had shut up her womb, so as not to give her a child. ⁷ Thus he acted, year after year, when he went up to the house of the Lord. And when she was become disconsolate, and was weeping, and did not eat, ⁸ Elkana her husband said to her, Anna! and she said to him, Here, my lord. And he said to her, What is the matter with thee, that thou weepest? And why dost thou not eat? And why is thy heart grieved? Am not I better to thee than ten sons?

¹ When king David was old; far advanced in years, they covered him with clothes, but he was not warmed;

¹⁴ Upon which he said to Giezi, What can be done for her? And his servant Giezi replied, She indeed hath not a son and her husband is old.]

¹⁹ and far from being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body now become dead, he being then in his hundredth year; nor the deadness of Sarah's womb.

¹¹ By faith Sarah also received strength for conception, and was delivered of a son when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

¹ Therefore associate thou with thyself thy brother Aaron and his sons, that from among the children of Israel, Aaron and Nadab and Abiud and Eleazar and Ithamar the sons of Aaron may minister to me in the priest's office.

⁴¹ And with these thou shalt clothe Aaron thy brother and his sons with him. And thou shalt anoint them and fill their bands and consecrate them that they may minister to me in the priest's office.

¹ Now these are the things which thou shalt do for them. Thou shalt consecrate them that they may minister to me in the priest's office. For this purpose thou shalt take one young bull of the herd and two rams without blemish

⁹ and gird them with girdles and put the tiaras on them. And the office of serving me as priests shall be theirs for ever. Then thou shalt consecrate the bands of Aaron, and the bands of his sons;

⁴⁴ And I will hallow the tabernacle of the testimony and the altar; and I will hallow Aaron and his sons to minister to me in the priest's office;

³⁰ And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons and hallow them to minister to me as priests.

⁷ therefore thou, and thy sons with thee, shall keep your priesthood, as far as the altar is concerned, and what is within the veil; and you shall perform these services as a privilege of your priesthood; and any one of another family who approacheth shall be put to death.

² As Nadab and Abiud died in the presence of their father and had no sons; and . Eleazar and Ithamar had officiated as priests;

¹⁴ And according to the regulation of his father David, he appointed the courses of the priests according to their services; and the Levites were set to their charges to sing praises and to minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required; and the keepers of the gates were distributed into their classes for every gate. For so David, the man of God had commanded.

¹⁴ For the Levites left the habitations of their possession and went to Juda to Jerusalem; for Jeroboam and his sons cast them out from ministering to the Lord,

² And Ezekias re-established the courses of the priests, and of the Levites and the courses of each individual among the priests and the Levites, "according to his particular service for the burnt offerings, and for the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and to praise and give thanks, and to attend at the gates in the courts of the house of the Lord.

¹⁹ And of the Aaronites, who officiated as priests, there were some men of their cities, expressly nominated in every city, to distribute a portion to every male among the priests, and to every one numbered among the Levites.

¹⁸ And they set the priests in their courses, and the Levites in their divisions over the service of God at Jerusalem, according to the writing of the book of Moses.

⁵ In the days of Herod, the king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia; and his wife, whose name was Elizabeth, was of the race of Aaron.

⁷ And Aaron shall burn thereon every morning compound incense beaten fine. When he replenisheth the lamps he shall burn incense thereon. ⁸ And when Aaron lighteth the lamps in the evening he shall burn incense thereon every day continually before the Lord throughout their generations.

⁴⁰ a memorial to the children of Israel, that none of another family, who is not of the seed of Aaron, should come near to present incense before the Lord, lest he be like Kore, and his confederacy, as the Lord spoke to him by the ministry of Moses.

²⁸ And I chose the house of thy father out of all the sceptres of Israel, to serve me in the priest's office, to go up to my altar, and to burn incense, and wear an ephod; and I gave the house of thy father all the burnt offerings of the children of Israel for meat.

⁴⁹ And Aaron and his sons, who were to burn incense on the altar of whole burnt offerings and on the altar of incense offerings, were for all the service of the Holy of Holies, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God commanded.

¹³ The sons of Ambram were Aaron and Moses. Now Aaron was set apart for the sanctification of the most holy things, he and his sons, to burn incense before the Lord, to minister in the priest's office, and to bless in his name forever

¹⁶ But when he became strong his heart was elated to his destruction; for he trespassed against the Lord his God and went into the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.

¹¹ Now therefore be not backward, seeing the Lord hath made choice of you to stand before him, to minister, and to be continually employed in his service, and in offering incense.

⁶ These things being thus prepared, the priests, performing the divine services, go on all occasions into the first compartment;

¹⁷ there shall be no other man in the tabernacle of the testimony, from the time of his going in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out. And when he shall have made atonement for himself, and his household, and for all the congregation of the children of Israel,

¹⁴ Having therefore a great chief priest who hath passed through the heavens, namely Jesus the son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not a chief priest incapable of sympathizing in our infirmities; but one who hath been tried in all respects like ourselves, but without sin.

²⁴ For the Christ did not enter into holies made with hands, the symbols of the true; but into heaven itself; now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf:

³ And another angel came and stood by the altar, having a golden censer: and to him much incense was given, that he might offer it, for the prayers of all the saints, upon the golden altar which is before the throne.

¹ Thou shalt also make an Altar to burn incense thereon. Of incorruptible wood thou shalt make it ² a cubit long and a cubit broad. It shall be square and the height shall be two cubits. The horns shall be a component part of it. ³ And thou shalt overlay with pure gold its grate and its sides round about and the horns thereof. And thou shall make for it a wreathed border of gold round about. ⁴ And thou shalt make two rings of pure gold under its wreathed border for the two corners. Thou shalt make them on the two sides and there shall be clasps for the staves with which it is to be carried. ⁵ And thou shalt make staves of incorruptible wood and overlay them with gold. ⁶ And thou shalt place this before the veil, which is over the ark of the testimonies, from which I will make myself known to thee. ⁷ And Aaron shall burn thereon every morning compound incense beaten fine. When he replenisheth the lamps he shall burn incense thereon. ⁸ And when Aaron lighteth the lamps in the evening he shall burn incense thereon every day continually before the Lord throughout their generations. ⁹ And upon it thou shalt not offer any other incense offering, homage offering, nor cake offering; nor shalt thou pour a libation thereon. ¹⁰ But Aaron shall make an atonement on it; on the horns thereof, once a year. With the blood of the purifying sacrifice he shall purify it throughout their generations. It is a Holy of Holies to the Lord.

²⁶ He then placed the golden altar in the tabernacle of the testimony over against the veil ²⁷ and burned thereon compound incense as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹³ and he shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord; and the smoke of this incense shall cover the propitiatory which is on the testimonies, and he shall not die.

³ And an angel of the Lord appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold, thou art barren and hast never had a child. But thou shalt conceive a son.

⁹ And God hearkened to the voice of Manoe, and the angel of God came again to the woman. Now she was sitting in the field, and Manoe her husband was not with her.

¹⁹ In reply to which, the angel said to him, I am Gabriel, who attend in the presence of God: and I am sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee these glad tidings.

²⁸ And when the angel entered, he said to her, Hail, favourite of heaven! The Lord is with thee! Blessed thou among women!

¹⁰ Whereupon the angel said to them, Be not afraid; for lo! I bring you glad tidings; matter of great joy, which it will be to all the people

¹⁹ But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison; and having brought them out said,

³ About the ninth hour of the day, he saw plainly in a vision, an angel of God coming in to him and saying to him, Cornelius! ⁴ Upon which he having fixed his eyes on him, and being terrified, said, Lord! what is it? Then the angel said to him, Thy prayers and thine acts of benevolence have ascended for a memorial before God.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth on service on the account of them who are to be heirs of salvation?

³ And another angel came and stood by the altar, having a golden censer: and to him much incense was given, that he might offer it, for the prayers of all the saints, upon the golden altar which is before the throne. ⁴ And when the smoke of the incense for the prayers of the saints ascended from the hand of the angel before God,

¹³ And the sixth angel sounded; and I heard a united voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God

²² When Gideon saw that it was an angel of the Lord, he said, Alas! alas! Lord, my lord! For have I seen the angel of the Lord face to face.

²² whereupon he said to his wife, We shall surely die, for we have seen God.

¹⁴ I was seized with a horror and trembling, which gave a violent shog to my bones. ¹⁵ A wind indeed blew full in my face, and my hair stood erect and my flesh quivered.

⁷ Now, I Daniel alone saw this vision. The men who were with me did not see it; but great consternation fell upon them and they fled for fear;

⁵ And going into the sepulchre, they saw a youth sitting on the right side, clothed with a white robe, and they were terrified.

²⁹ Upon seeing him she was greatly discomposed at his speech, and revolved in her mind what sort of a salutation this might be.

⁹ And lo! an angel of the Lord stood by them; and a glory of the Lord shone around them; at which they were greatly affrighted. ¹⁰ Whereupon the angel said to them, Be not afraid; for lo! I bring you glad tidings; matter of great joy, which it will be to all the people

¹⁷ And when I saw him I fell at his feet as one dead. Whereupon he laid his right hand on me, and said to me, "Fear not. I am the first and the last,

¹⁰ And this is the covenant which thou shalt keep between me and you, even thy seed after thee throughout their generations, Every male of you shall be circumcised.

¹⁹ Whereupon God said to Abraham, Nay, behold Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name Isaak. And I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant to be his God and the God of his seed after him.

¹⁴ Can any thing be impossible with God? About this time twelve month I will return to thee, and Sarah shall have a son.

²³ And the Lord said to him, Peace be to thee. Fear not. Thou shalt not die.

³ And an angel of the Lord appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold, thou art barren and hast never had a child. But thou shalt conceive a son. ⁴ Now therefore be careful not to drink wine, nor any fermented liquor, nor eat any thing which is unclean. ⁵ For behold thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and on his head a razor shall not come; for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb. And he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

²⁰ and she conceived, and at the appointed time bore a son, and called his name Samuel, because, said she, I asked him of the Lord God of Sabbaoth. ²¹ And when the man Elkana went up, with his household, to offer at Selom his annual sacrifice, and his vows, and all the tythes of his land, ²² Anna did not go up with him; for she said to her husband, Not till the boy can go up after I have weaned him, that he may appear before the Lord, and abide there continually. ²³ And Elkana her husband said to her, Do what seemeth good in thine eyes. Stay till thou hast weaned him. And may the Lord establish what hath proceeded from thy mouth. So the woman staid at home, and suckled the child.

²¹ the Lord visited Anna, and she bore three sons more, and two daughters. But the lad Samuel grew up before the Lord.

¹⁶ Elisha said to her, This time twelve month, about this very hour thou alive and well hast embraced a son. To which she replied, Nay, my lord, do not deceive thy handmaid. ¹⁷ So the woman conceived and bore a son about that time twelve month, about the very hour, being alive and well as Elisha said to her.

⁹ Who settleth the barren woman in a family making her a joyful mother of children.

²¹ I will praise thee because thou didst hear me, and hast been unto me salvation.

³ Behold sons are an heritage of the Lord; a reward of the fruit of the womb. ⁴ Like shafts in the hands of a mighty man, so are the sons of them who were shaken off. ⁵ Happy he who shall satisfy his desire with these. They shall not be put to shame, when they speak to their enemies in the gates.

³ Now I had approached to the prophetess and she had conceived and when she brought forth a son, the Lord said to me, "Call his name Speed to the Spoil; haste to the prey"

¹² Then he said to me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thy heart to gain knowledge and afflict thyself before the Lord thy God, thy words were heard, and I came at thy words;

⁴ the Lord said to him, "Call his name Jezrael; for yet a little while and I will avenge the blood of Jezrael on the house of Jehu, and cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease.

⁶ And when she conceived again and bore a daughter, he said to him, "Call her name, Not compassionated; for I will no longer continue to have compassion on the house of Israel, but will set myself against them.

⁹ and he said, "Call his name "Not my people", since you are not my people and I am not your God." ¹⁰ [Now the number of the children of Israel was like the sand of the sea which cannot be measured nor counted.] "But it shall come to pass that in the place where it was said to them, " You are not my people, " they shall be called children of the Living God,

²¹ and she will bear a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

²⁷ Thereupon Jesus immediately spake to them, saying, Take courage: it is I; be not afraid.

⁵ And the angel accosting the women, said, Be not ye terrified. For I know that you are seeking Jesus who was crucified.

⁶ Whereupon he said to them, Be not terrified. You are seeking Jesus, the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is risen. He is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.

³⁰ Whereupon the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary. For thou hast found favour with God.

⁶⁰ But his mother interposing, said, No. He shall be called John. ⁶¹ And they said to her, There is none among thy kindred who is called by that name. ⁶² Then they made signs to his father to know what he would have him called. ⁶³ And he, having demanded a table book, wrote, saying, His name is John. At which they were all surprised.

²¹ Now when eight days were accomplished, at circumcising the child, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he was conceived.

³⁶ And while they were thus speaking, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them; and saith to them, Peace be to you. ³⁷ At which they were affrighted, and, being in terror, thought they saw a spirit; ³⁸ he said to them, Why are you alarmed? And why do groundless surmises arise in your hearts? ³⁹ View my hands and my feet; that it is I myself; handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me have. ⁴⁰ While saying this, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

³¹ and said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine acts of benevolence are remembered before God;

⁶ And Sarah said, The Lord hath made laughter for me; for whoever shall hear will rejoice with me.

²⁰ A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son mocketh his mother.

¹⁵ My son, if thy heart be wise, thou wilt gladden my heart.

²⁴ A righteous father nourisheth thee well; and his soul rejoiceth in a wise son.

⁵⁸ And her neighbours and her relations, hearing that the Lord had magnified his mercy to her, rejoiced with her.

² and I will make thee a great nation; and I will bless thee and make thy name great, and thou shalt be blessed;

¹⁹ But he refused and said, I know; my son; I know. This indeed will be a people and will be exalted. But his younger brother will be greater than he; and his seed will be a multitude of nations.

² Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, When a man or a woman shall make a solemn vow to preserve the strictest purity for the Lord, ³ they must abstain from wine, and strong drink. Such a one shall not drink vinegar made of wine, nor vinegar made of strong drink; nor shall such a one drink any thing made of the grape; nor eat any grapes, fresh pulled, or dryed, all the days of the vow. ⁴ From every thing produced from the grape, including wine; from the pulp to the stone,

⁷ the Lord said to Joshua, This day I begin to exalt thee in the sight of all the children of Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

¹⁴ On that day the Lord magnified Joshua in the sight of the whole race of Israel, and they feared him, as they did Moses all the days of his life,

⁴ Now therefore be careful not to drink wine, nor any fermented liquor, nor eat any thing which is unclean. ⁵ For behold thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and on his head a razor shall not come; for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb. And he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁶ And the woman went, and told her husband, saying, There came to me a man of God, and his visage was like that of an angel of God, very awful, so that I did not ask him whence he was, nor did he tell me his name. But he said to me, Behold thou art with

⁸ and have been with thee wherever thou hast gone, and have cut off all thy enemies from before thee, and made thee a name like the name of the great men on the earth;

¹² From thee come riches and glory; Thou, Lord, rulest over all. Thou art the head of all dominion, and in thy hand is majesty and power. And by thy hand, Almighty Sovereign, all things are made great and strong.

⁹ Because thou art he, who drew me forth from the womb: my hope, when at the breasts of my mother;

⁵ "Before I formed thee in the womb, I knew thee, and before thou wast born I hallowed thee. I have appointed thee a prophet for nations."

¹⁵ The Lord Almighty will protect them, and they shall consume them and overwhelm them with sling stones; and drink them up as wine and fill the phials as an altar.

⁹ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yes I tell you, and something more than a prophet; ¹⁰ for this is he of whom it is written, "Behold I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee." ¹¹ Verily I say to you, among them who are born of women, there hath not arisen a greater than John the baptist: but the least in the kingdom of heaven is a greater than he. ¹² Now ever since the days of John the baptist, the kingdom of the heavens is invaded and invaders are forcibly taking possession of it. ¹³ For till the appearance of John, all the prophets and the law were the public instructors. ¹⁴ Indeed, if you will bear to be told it, he is Elias who was to come. ¹⁵ Whoever hath ears to hear let him hear. ¹⁶ Now to what shall I compare this generation? It is like boys in the market place who call to their playfellows, ¹⁷ saying, "We have played to you on the pipe, but you have not danced; We have sung to you songs of woe, and you have not lamented." ¹⁸ For John came, abstaining from meat and drink, and they say he hath a demon. ¹⁹ The son of man came eating and drinking; and they say, Behold a gluttonous man and a wine drinker; a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her children.

²⁸ For I say to you, Among those who are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the baptist, but the least in the kingdom of God is a greater than he.

³³ For John the baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, He hath a demon.

³⁵ He was the lighted and shining lamp; and for a while you were disposed to exult with joy at his light.

⁴ And they were all filled with a holy spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the spirit gave them to make solemn addresses.

¹⁴ Whereupon Peter, as he was standing with the eleven, raised his voice and thus solemnly addressed them, "Men of Judea and all ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, let this be made known to you; and listen attentively to my words: ¹⁵ for these men are not drunk as you suppose; for it is but the third hour of the day. ¹⁶ But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel, ¹⁷ "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; and your young men shall see visions; and your old men shall dream dreams; ¹⁸ and upon my servants, and upon my handmaids, in those days I will pour out a portion of my spirit, and they shall prophesy:

¹⁵ but when it pleased God, who had set me apart from my birth, and by his special favour called me,

¹⁸ And be not intoxicated with wine in which there is debauchery, but be filled with the spirit

³ A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the roads for our God. ⁴ Let every valley be filled up, and every mountain and hill be levelled: and let all the crooked be made a straight road, and the rough way, smooth plains: ⁵ and the glory of the Lord will appear: And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. For the Lord hath spoken."

⁶ Moreover he said to me, Is it a great thing for thee to be called my servant to reestablish the tribes of Jacob and bring back the dispersion of Israel? Behold I have given thee for the covenant of a race; for the light of nations; that thou mayst be for salvation to the farthest part of the earth.

³ And they who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and some of the many righteous like the stars for the ages and longer.

¹ Behold I am about to send my messenger and he will examine the way before me. And the Lord whom ye seek; even the angel of the covenant whom you desire will come suddenly to his temple. Behold he is coming, saith the Lord Almighty.

¹ In those days cometh John the baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, ² "Reform; for the reign of the heavens is at hand." ³ For this is the person spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, "A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord: make the roads for him straight." ⁴ Now John had his raiment made of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his waist: and his food was locusts and wild honey: ⁵ then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the country along the Jordan, ⁶ and by him they were baptized in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him. And though you saw this, you did not afterwards repent and believe him.

⁷⁶ Now as for thee, child, thou shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shall go before in the presence of the Lord, to prepare his ways;

⁵ Samuel said, Assemble all Israel to Massepha, and I will pray to the Lord for you.

¹ And the prophet Elias the Thesbite, who was of Thesbon in Galaad, said to Achab, As the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain for years but by the word of my mouth.

¹⁸ To which Elias replied, I am not the troubler of Israel; but thou and thy father's house are, by your forsaking the Lord your God and going after the Baalims.

²⁰ And Achab said to Elias, Hast thou found me, my enemy? To which he replied, I have found thee. Because thou hast sold thyself to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to wrath,

⁴ Now is not this the case, saith the Lord, From the bed to which thou art gone up thou shalt not come down, for thou shalt assuredly die? ⁵ So Elias went and spoke to them, and the messengers returned to the king. ⁶ Thereupon he said to them, Why are you returned? To which they replied, There came up a man to meet us, and he said to us, Go, return to the king who sent you and say to him, Thus saith the Lord, Is it because there is not a God in Israel, that thou goest to inquire of Baal, the fly-god of Akkaron? Now is not this the case; From the bed to which thou hast gone up thou shalt not come down, for thou shalt assuredly die?

¹⁶ And Elias spoke to him and said, Thus saith the Lord, Why didst thou send messengers to inquire of Baal the fly-god of Akkaron? Is not this the case? From the bed to which thou hast gone up thou shalt not come down: for thou shalt assuredly die?

¹⁸ Lord, the God of Abraham and Isaak and Israel our fathers, keep these things forever in the thoughts of the hearts of thy people and direct their hearts to thee,

³⁶ and Ezekias and all the people rejoiced, because God had made provision for the people. For the thing was done suddenly.

¹⁷ The Lord hath hearkened to the desire of the oppressed: Thine ear hath attended to the preparation of their heart;

⁸ that they might not be like their fathers; a perverse and rebellious generation; a generation which set not their hearts aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

¹⁰ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and all who practise it have good understanding. Let the praise of him endure forever.

²⁴ And they who have erred in spirit will gain knowledge, and the murmurers shall be taught obedience, and the trifling tongues will learn to speak peace."

¹² therefore in this manner will I deal with thee, Israel. But because I will deal thus with thee, prepare, Israel, to invoke thy God:

⁵ Now behold I will send you Elias the Thesbite before that great and awful day of the Lord cometh; ⁶ who will turn the heart of father to son and the heart of one man to another that I may not come and smite the land with utter destruction.

⁴ Now John had his raiment made of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his waist: and his food was locusts and wild honey:

⁷ And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them," Brood of vipers! who hath prompted you to flee from the impending wrath. ⁸ Produce therefore fruits worthy of this reformation, ⁹ and presume not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father! For I say to you, God is able out of these stones to raise up children for Abraham. ¹⁰ Now the axe is at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore which doth not produce good fruit is to be cut down and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water for a reformation; but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in a holy spirit and fire. ¹² His winnowing instrument is in his hand. He will thoroughly clean his floor, and gather his wheat for the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

¹⁴ Indeed, if you will bear to be told it, he is Elias who was to come.

⁴ for John had said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

¹¹ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Elias indeed cometh first and is to finish and begin all anew. ¹² Now I say to you, Elias is already come and they did not know him, but have treated him as they pleased. In the same manner also the son of man will soon suffer by them.

³⁰ And he in reply said, I will not. But afterwards he repented and went. And coming to the second, he ordered him in like manner; and he in reply said, I will, sir; but did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say to him, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily I say to you, The publicans and the harlots lead the way for you to the kingdom of God. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him. And though you saw this, you did not afterwards repent and believe him.

¹¹ Then they asked him, saying, Why do the Scribes say that Elias must first come? ¹² In reply to which, he said to them, Elias indeed having come first, finisheth and beginneth all anew, in a manner conformable to what is written of the son of man, that he may suffer many things, and be treated with contempt. ¹³ But I say to you, that Elias hath actually come; and they have done to him what they pleased, as it is written of him.

¹⁶ And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

⁷ Therefore to the multitudes who came out to be baptized by him, he said, Offspring of vipers! who hath warned you to flee from the impending wrath? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of this reformation: and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ⁹ Now, indeed, the axe is at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore which doth not produce good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And when the people asked him, saying, What then shall we do? ¹¹ He in reply, said to them, Let him who hath two coats impart to him who hath none: and let him who hath provisions, do the same. ¹² And when publicans came to be baptized, and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? ¹³ He said to them, Exact no more than what is enjoined you. ¹⁴ And when soldiers asked him, saying, And what shall we do? He said to them, Injure no man, either by violence or false accusation, and be content with your wages.

¹³ who were born, not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

²¹ Then they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not: art thou the prophet And he answered, No. ²² Then they said to him, Who art thou? That we may give an answer to them who sent us: What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said, I am "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord," as the prophet Esaias said. ²⁴ Now they who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ Then they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them saying, I baptize in water; but there is one in the midst of you, whom you know not. ²⁷ He is the person who is coming after me; who is preferred to me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie. ²⁸ These things passed at Bethabara on the bank of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ The next day John seeth Jesus coming towards him, and saith, Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world! ³⁰ this is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who hath been before me; for he existed before me.

³⁴ Now I have Seen and testified that this is The Son Of God.

²⁸ You yourselves are witnesses for me that I said, "I am not the Christ; but that I am sent before him.

³³ Therefore I sent to thee immediately and thou hast done well in coming. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God, to hear all that God hath given thee in charge.

²³ to the end that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy which he had previously prepared for glory

⁹ Do you not know that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the voluptuous, nor sodomites, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor such as indulge inordinate desires, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ Now such some of you were; but, you have washed yourselves; but you are hallowed, but you are acquitted by the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God.

¹² give thanks to the Father who hath fitted us for a portion of the inheritance of the saints in light;

²¹ If any one therefore purify himself from these he will be a vessel for honour, set apart and suitable for the master, ready prepared for every good work.

⁹ but you being a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people peculiarly set apart that you may publish the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light

¹¹ Therefore as all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conversation and godliness, ¹² expecting, and eagerly desiring, the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens, all on fire, shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with intense heat, ¹³ and we, according to his promise, expect new heavens, and a new earth in which dwelleth righteousness! ¹⁴ As you therefore, beloved, expect these things, use all diligence to be found at peace with him, without spot and without blemish;

²⁸ And now, children, abide in him, that when he shall appear we may have confidence, and not be made ashamed by him at his coming.

⁴ And I saw thrones and to them who sat on them judgment was given, and [I saw] the souls of them who had been slain for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God and who had not worshipped the beast nor its image, nor received the mark on their forehead or on their hand. And they lived and reigned with the Christ the thousand years;

⁸ Whereupon he said, sovereign Lord, how shall I know that I shall inherit it?

¹² And Sarah smiled within herself, saying, It hath never been so with me even to this time, and my lord is old.

²¹ Thereupon Moses said, The people among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen, yet thou hast said, I will give them flesh to eat, and they shall eat it a whole month. ²² Must the flocks and the herds be slaughtered for them? Will even these suffice? Or should all the fish of the sea be collected for them, would this be sufficient for them? ²³ And the Lord said to Moses, Cannot the hand of the Lord furnish a sufficiency? Thou shalt now see whether my word shall come to pass to thee or not.

³⁶ Gideon said to God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast spoken, ³⁷ behold I lay this fleece of wool on the threshing floor; If there be dew on this fleece only, and all the ground be dry, then I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand as thou hast spoken. ³⁸ This was accordingly done. And when he arose early the next morning he pressed the fleece, and wringed out the dew from the fleece, a bowl full of water. ³⁹ Then Gideon said to God, Let not, I beseech thee, thy anger be kindled against me: let me, I pray thee, make one trial more with the fleece; and let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew. ⁴⁰ And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

² Upon this a nobleman on whose hand the king leaned, in reply to Elisha said, Behold should the Lord make flood gates in heaven, can such a thing be? And Elisha replied, Behold thou shalt see it with thy eyes but shalt not eat thereof.

²² Whereupon Ezekias said, Let this be a sign to Ezekias, that I shall go up to the house of God.

⁷ Now they had no child, as Elizabeth was barren. And they were both advanced in years.

³⁴ Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I know not man.

¹⁶ And I heard a voice of a man amidst the Oubal and it called and said, "Gabriel, instruct him respecting the vision."

²¹ even whilst I was uttering this prayer, behold a man, Gabriel, whom I saw in the former vision, came flying and touched me about the hour of the evening sacrifice ²² and instructed me and conversed with me and said, Daniel, I am now come to teach thee knowledge. ²³ At the beginning of thy supplication a word went forth, and I am come to tell thee; for thou art a man greatly beloved. Be instructed therefore by the decree, and understand by the vision.

¹⁰ Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones; for I say to you, Their angels in heaven do continually behold the face of my father who is in heaven.

²⁶ Arid in the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

¹⁰ Then he said, I will return and come to thee about this time twelve month, and Sarah thy wife will have a son. And Sarah heard, being at the door of the tent behind them. ¹¹ [Now Abraham and Sarah were far advanced in life, and it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.] ¹² And Sarah smiled within herself, saying, It hath never been so with me even to this time, and my lord is old. ¹³ And the Lord said to Abraham, Why did Sarah smile within herself, saying, Shall I indeed bring forth? I who am old? ¹⁴ Can any thing be impossible with God? About this time twelve month I will return to thee, and Sarah shall have a son. ¹⁵ Then Sarah denied, saying, I did not smile, for she was terrified. And he said to her, Nay, but thou didst smile.

¹¹ Upon which the Lord said to Moses, Who gave man a mouth? and who made the hard of hearing, and the deaf, him who seeth and the blind? Was it not I who am God?

¹² Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Because you have not believed, to sanctify me before the children of Israel, therefore you shall not lead this congregation into the land which I have given them.

¹⁹ this nobleman answered and said to Elisha, Behold should the Lord make flood gates in heaven, could this be? Thereupon Elisha said, Behold thou shalt see with thy eyes but shalt not eat thereof.

⁹ though Somoron is the head of Ephraim, and the son of Romelias, the head of Somoron, yes though you may not believe nor understand.

²⁶ And I will bind up thy tongue, that thou mayst be dumb and not be to them a reprover, because they are a rebellious house.

²⁷ on that day thy mouth shall be opened to him who escapeth. Thou shalt speak and no more be dumb and thou shalt be a sign to them; and they shall know that I am the Lord.

¹⁹ Thereupon Jesus, in reply to him, saith, O faithless generation! How long shall I be with you? How long am I to endure you! Bring him to me.

¹⁴ At length he appeared to the eleven, when they were at table, and upbraided them for their incredulity and obstinacy, because they did not believe them who had seen him after his resurrection.

²² And when he came out, he could not speak to them. So they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he made signs to them and continued deaf and dumb.

⁴⁵ Happy indeed is she who believed that there shall be an accomplishment of the things spoken to her from the Lord.

³ Well! what if some have been unfaithful? Shall their unfaithfulness make void the faithfulness of God?

¹³ If we are unfaithful, he will continue faithful; he cannot deny himself.

² in hope of an everlasting life, which the God of truth promised before the times consisting of ages,

¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to deceive, there might be strong consolation for us who have fled to take hold of this proffered hope,

¹⁹ Whomsoever I love, I rebuke and chastise. Be zealous therefore, and reform.

²³ Speak to Aaron and his sons and say, In this manner you shall bless the children of Israel, saying, ²⁴ The Lord bless thee and keep thee; ²⁵ The Lord make his countenance to shine upon thee, and be gracious to thee; ²⁶ The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. ²⁷ So they shall put my name on the children of Israel; and I the Lord will bless them.

⁶² Then they made signs to his father to know what he would have him called.

²⁴ Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him to ask who it might be of whom he spake.

¹⁷ But he having beckoned to them with his hand to be silent, related to them how the Lord had brought him out of prison, and said, Tell this to James and the brethren. Then departing, he went to another place.

³³ But when they had thrust Alexander out of the crowd, the Jews pushing him forward, and Alexander waving his hand wished to make a defence to the people,

⁴⁰ And on his giving permission, Paul standing on the stairs waved his hand to the people; and a great silence taking place, he addressed them in the Hebrew dialect, saying,

⁵ Then he gave them a charge saying, This is the thing which you shall do. Let one third of you come in on the sabbath and keep guard, over the king's house at the gate; ⁶ another third at the gate of the high way, and the other third at the gate behind the guards. So you will guard the house. ⁷ And two companies among you even all who go out on the sabbath shall keep guard in the house of the Lord before the king.

²⁵ And their brethren in the villages were to relieve them, every seven days from time to time.

¹ Now the Lord visited Sarah as he had said. And the Lord did for Sarah as he had spoken, ² and she conceived and bare a son to Abraham in old age at the set time, of which the Lord had spoken to him.

²² Now God had remembered Rachel and God hearkened to her and opened her womb. ²³ And she having conceived bore Jacob a son. Whereupon she said, God hath taken away my reproach. So she called his name Joseph, saying, May God add to me another son.

⁶ But because the Lord had not given her a child, such was her affliction and anxiety on the account of this, that she became disconsolate, because the Lord had shut up her womb, so as not to give her a child.

¹⁹ And they arose early in the morning, and worshipped the Lord, and set out on their journey. And when Elkana came to his house at Armathaim, he knew his wife Anna; and the Lord remembered her, ²⁰ and she conceived, and at the appointed time bore a son, and called his name Samuel, because, said she, I asked him of the Lord God of Sabbaoth.

²¹ the Lord visited Anna, and she bore three sons more, and two daughters. But the lad Samuel grew up before the Lord. ²² Now Eli was very old; and when he heard what his sons did to the children of Israel,

¹ and seven women shall lay hold on one man, saying, "We will eat our own bread and wear our own raiment, let us only be called by thy name: take thou away our reproach."

¹ rejoice thou barren, who bearest not; break forth with shouts of joy, thou who sufferest not the pangs of child birth; for many more are the children of the desolate than of her who hath a husband. For the Lord said, ² Enlarge the place of thy tent and thy curtains; fix up; spare not; lengthen thy cords and make thy stakes strong. ³ Extend still farther to the right and left. And thy seed shall inherit nations and thou shalt inhabit wasted cities. ⁴ Be not terrified because thou hast been exposed to shame; nor blush because thou hast been reproached. For thou shalt forget the shame of ancient times, and the reproach of thy widowhood

¹³ Whereupon the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias; for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife, Elizabeth, will bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

²³ and went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth; so that what was spoken by the prophets was fulfilled: that he should be called a Nazarene.

⁴ and accordingly Joseph went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and patriarchal family of David,

⁴⁵ Philip finding Nathaniel, saith to him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets have written, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. ⁴⁶ Upon which Nathaniel saith to him, Of Nazareth can there be any thing good! Philip saith to him, Come and see.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Christ. But others said', Doth the Christ come out of Galilee?

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between thee and the woman; and between thy seed and her seed. He will wound thy head, and thou wilt wound his heel."

¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and he shall be called Emmanuel.

²² How long shall it be, ere thou wilt return, despised daughter! Since the Lord hath created safety for a new plantation, with safety men may walk about.

¹⁶ and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called the Christ:

¹⁸ and the genealogy of Jesus Christ was thus; for his mother Mary having been espoused to Joseph was, before they came together, found to be with child by the holy Spirit,

²⁰ but while he was thinking of this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said to him, "Joseph, son of David, fear not to take home Mary thy wife; for her pregnancy is from the Holy Spirit" ²¹ and she will bear a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

²³ "The virgin shall conceive and bear a son and thou shalt call his name Emmanuel," the meaning of which is, God with us:

⁴ and accordingly Joseph went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and patriarchal family of David, ⁵ to be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was then great with child.

²⁴ Blessed among women be Jael the wife of Chaber the Kinite: Above women in tents may she be blessed.

¹² press, with an intent to flee from before Madiam. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, The Lord

²⁹ Many daughters have possessed wealth, many have acted virtuously: but thou hast surpassed: thou hast excelled all. ³⁰ False are allurements, and vain the beauty of a wife. For a woman of understanding is blessed. Let her therefore praise the fear of the Lord. ³¹ Give her of the fruits of her hands; and let her husband be praised in the gates.

⁵ Fear not. Because I am with thee, from the east I will bring thy seed, and gather thee together from the west:

¹⁸ Behold I have made thee this day, like a fortified city and like a wall of brass, too strong for all the kings of Juda and the chiefs thereof and the people of the land. ¹⁹ Though they fight against thee they cannot prevail over thee; for I am with thee to deliver thee saith the Lord.

¹⁹ and said to me, Man much beloved, fear not: peace be to thee. Take courage and be strong. And when he had spoken to me I recovered strength and said, Let my lord speak, for thou hast strengthened me.

² take words with you and return to the Lord your God, and, that you may not receive the punishment of iniquity but may receive good things, say to him, "We will render to thee the fruit of our lips.

⁴⁸ In reply to which he said to him who told him, who is my mother? And who are my brethren?

⁴² and with a loud acclamation said, Blessed thou among women! and blessed the fruit of thy womb.

²⁷ As he was thus speaking, it happened that a woman among the crowd, raising her voice, said to him, Happy the womb which bore thee and the breasts which thou hast sucked! ²⁸ Whereupon he said, Nay, rather happy they who hear the word of God and keep it.

¹⁰ for I am with thee; and no one shall set upon thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.

⁶ for the praise of the glory of that favour of his with which he made us objects of favour in the Beloved;

¹³ is with thee" the Mighty Lord of Hosts. Whereupon Gideon said to him, With me, my lord! But if the Lord is with us, why have these evils befallen us? And where are all his wondrous works, of which our fathers have told us, saying, Hath not the Lord brought us up out of Egypt? But he hath now cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Madiam. ¹⁴ Then the angel of the Lord turned towards him and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel out of the hand of Madiam. Behold I have sent thee. ¹⁵ Upon which Gideon said to him, Me, my lord! How can I save Israel? Behold my thousand is weak in Manasses; and I am the least in my father's house.

²⁰ But with respect to thy asses which were lost three days ago, give thyself no concern about them, for they are found. Now for whom are the best things of Israel? Are they not for thee and thy father's house? ²¹ Whereupon Saul answered and said, Am not I a Jeminite, a small sceptre of a community of Israel, and that community the smallest of the whole sceptre of Benjamin? Why therefore hast thou spoken to me in this manner?

⁴⁹ But they, seeing him walking on the sea, thought it was an apparition, and uttered a loud scream. ⁵⁰ For they all saw him, and were terrified. Whereupon he immediately spoke to them, saying, Take courage: it is I; be not afraid;

⁵ And going into the sepulchre, they saw a youth sitting on the right side, clothed with a white robe, and they were terrified. ⁶ Whereupon he said to them, Be not terrified. You are seeking Jesus, the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is risen. He is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.

¹² at the sight of whom Zacharias was greatly discomposed and terrified.

⁶⁶ And all who heard laid them up in their mind, saying, What will this child be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.

¹⁹ But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her mind.

⁵¹ Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and continued subject to them. And his mother kept all these things in her mind.

¹⁷ And while Peter was in great doubt, what this vision which he had seen could mean, behold the men who were sent by Cornelius, having inquired out Simon's house, stood at the gate,

¹⁰ Fear not, for I am with thee; be not led astray, for I am thy God. I have strengthened thee and helped thee, and secured thee with my just right hand.

¹⁴ Fear not, Jacob, diminutive Israel! I have helped thee, saith thy God, who redeemeth thee, Israel.

¹ Still however thus saith the Lord, the God who made thee Jacob, and who formed thee, Israel! fear not. Because I have redeemed thee; have called thee by thy name; thou art mine; ² therefore when thou passest through water, I am with thee, and the streams shall not overwhelm thee: and when thou passest through fire, thou shalt not be burned up; the flame shall not quite consume thee. ³ Because I the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel am thy Saviour, I have given Egypt for thy ransom and Ethiopia and Soena in thy stead. ⁴ Because thou hast been precious in my sight; hast been honoured and I loved thee; therefore I will give men for thee and chiefs for thy life.

² Thus saith the Lord, the God who made thee, and who formed thee from the womb, still thou shalt be helped. Fear not, thou my servant Jacob, and thou, beloved Israel, whom I have chosen:

³² Fear not, little flock. Because it hath pleased your Father to give you that kingdom,

⁹ And in a vision by night, the Lord said to Paul, Be not afraid, but speak, and keep not silence; ¹⁰ for I am with thee; and no one shall set upon thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.

²⁴ and said, Fear not, Paul. Thou must appear before Caesar; and lo! God hath given thee all them who are sailing with thee.

³¹ What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

⁶ So that we may say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper, I will not fear what man can to do me."

²⁵ but knew her not until she brought forth this her son, The First BORN and he called his name Jesus.

²⁷ to a virgin contracted to a man, whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary.

⁴ but when the fulness of time was come, God sent forth his son, born of a woman; born under law

¹¹ from the days I appointed judges over my people Israel: and I will give thee rest from all thine enemies, and the Lord will tell thee that thou art to build a house for him. ¹² And it shall come to pass when thy days are fulfilled and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, that I will raise up after thee the seed of thee who shall spring from thy loins, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³ He shall build a house for my name, and I will raise up again his throne for ever.

¹⁶ His house and his kingdom shall be established for ever before me and his throne shall be raised up again for ever.

¹¹ The Lord hath sworn a truth to David, and will not annul it; of the fruit of thy body I will set on thy throne;

⁶ because for us a child is born, and to us a son is given, whose government is on his own shoulder; and his name is called, "The Messenger of Great Counsel." For I will bring peace on the rulers and health for him. ⁷ His government shall be great and to his peace there is no boundary, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to reestablish it, and support it with judgment and justice, henceforth and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

⁵ therefore a throne shall be established with mercy, and on it one shall be seated with truth; in the tabernacle of David, executing justice, and searching out judgment and promoting righteousness.

⁵ Behold the days are coming, saith the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous shoot, who shall reign king and understand and execute judgment and justice on the earth. ⁶ In his days Juda shall be saved and Israel shall dwell securely. And the name which the Lord will give him by the prophets shall be Josedek [Lord of righteousness.]

²² For thus saith the Lord, I will myself take one of the choicest cedars from a summit; [their hearts I will nip] and I will plant it on a lofty mountain; ²³ I will cause it to be suspended on a lofty mountain of Israel; and I will plant it, and it shall blossom and bear fruit, and become a great cedar; and under it shall rest every bird, even all the winged tribe shall repose in its shade: its branches shall be renewed: ²⁴ and all the trees of the plain shall know that I am the Lord who bringeth down the lofty tree, and exalteth the tree which is low, and who causeth the green tree to wither, and the withered tree to flourish. I the Lord have spoken and I will perform.

²³ And I will set up over them one shepherd who shall feed them, even my servant David, who shall be their shepherd: ²⁴ and I the Lord will be their God; and David shall be chief among them. I the Lord have spoken;

²⁴ And my servant David shall be chief among them. He shall be singly the shepherd of all. Because they will walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and practise them, ²⁵ therefore they shall dwell in that land of theirs which I gave to my servant Jacob. Where their fathers dwelt there they shall dwell and my servant David shall be the only chief forever.

¹¹ In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David which hath fallen; I will rebuild those parts of it which have fallen to decay, and repair what have been demolished. I will indeed rebuild it as in the days of old, ¹² that the rest of mankind may seek [the Lord] even all the nations who are called by my name, saith the Lord who doth all these things.

¹ The genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water for a reformation; but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in a holy spirit and fire.

⁴² The queen of the south will be raised up at the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, because she came from the extremities of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold something greater than Solomon is here,

¹⁸ Then Jesus came near and spoke to them, saying, All power in heaven and on earth is given to me.

⁷ cried with a loud voice, saying, What hast thou to do with me, Jesus, son of the most high God?" I conjure thee by God not to torment me?

⁶¹ But Jesus was silent, and made no reply. Then the chief priest interrogated him, and saith to him, Art thou the Christ, the son of the Blessed?

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must not drink wine, nor any fermented liquor. With a holy spirit he will be filled, even from his mother's womb.

³⁵ And the angel answering, said to her, A holy spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee, therefore the holy offspring will be called the son of God.

¹⁶ John addressed them all, saying, I, indeed, baptize you in water; but there is one coming; who is mightier than I; the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you in a holy spirit and fire.

³⁵ But love your enemies; and do good; and lend without any mistrust, and your reward will be great. And you will be the children of the Most High Because he is kind, even to the ungrateful and malignant;

³⁵ The father loveth the son, and hath given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He who believeth in the son, hath an everlasting life; but he who disbelieveth the son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God will abide on him.

²¹ For as the Father raiseth the dead and restoreth to life, so the Son restoreth to life, whom he pleaseth. ²² For the Father judgeth no one, but hath committed the whole act of judging to his Son, ²³ that all may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, doth not honour the Father, who sent him. ²⁴ Verily, verily I say to you, He who heareth my word, and believeth on him who sent me, hath an everlasting life, and doth not incur condemnation, but hath passed from death to that life. ²⁵ Verily, verily I say to you, a time is coming, nay is now come, when the dead will hearken to the voice of the son of God, and they who hearken shall live. ²⁶ For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath granted to the son to have life also in himself, ²⁷ and hath also given him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. ²⁸ Wonder not at this; for a time is coming when all that are in the graves shall hearken to his voice, ²⁹ and come forth; they who have done good, to a resurrection of life, and they who have done evil, to a resurrection of condemnation.

⁶⁹ and we believe and know that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

³⁴ The multitude answered him, We have heard out of the law that "The Christ remaineth forever." How then dost thou say, That the son of man must be lifted up? Who is this son of man?

³⁰ Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, that from the fruit of his loins he would, as far as regardeth the flesh, raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

³⁶ Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus whom ye have crucified, Lord and Christ.

⁴⁸ But the Most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands. As the prophet saith,

¹⁷ This girl, following Paul and us, cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God. They are telling us the way of salvation.

⁴ him who was determinately marked out as son of God by a power, according to a spirit of holiness, of rising up from the dead,]

²⁰ of his which he exerted in the Christ: Having raised Him from the dead, he set him at his right hand, in the heavenly kingdom, ²¹ far above all principality and power, and might, and dominion, and every name which is named, not only in this age but in that to come; ²² and put all things under his feet, and constituted him head over all for the congregation, ²³ which is his body; the fulness of him who filleth all in all.

⁹ wherefore God highly exalted him, and granted him a name which is above every name, ¹⁰ that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those beneath the earth; ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father.

² hath in these last days spoken to us by a son whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also he made the ages; ³ who being an effulgence of the glory, and an impress of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, having by himself made a purification of our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high, ⁴ being made as much superior to the heavenly messengers as the name he hath inherited is more excellent than theirs: ⁵ for to which of those messengers did he ever say, "Thou art my son, this day I have begotten thee. "And again, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son?" ⁶ And again when he would bring the first born into the world, he saith, "And let all God's messengers worship him. ⁷ Now in respect to the messengers it is said, "Who maketh winds his messengers, and flaming fire his ministers: ⁸ but with respect to the son, "Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: The sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of rectitude:

⁷ And to the angel of the congregation at Philadelphia write thus saith the Holy one and the True, who hath the key [the Son] of David, who openeth and none shutteth, and who shutteth and none openeth,

⁶ Thy throne, God, is forever and ever; the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of rectitude.

³⁵ Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; that I will not be false to David. ³⁶ His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before me; ³⁷ and as the moon forever fixed: and the witness in heaven is faithful."

⁴⁴ And in the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and this kingdom of his shall not be left to another people. It shall break in pieces, and blow away all those kingdoms and shall itself stand forever.

¹³ And I beheld in the vision of the night, and lo! with the clouds of heaven one like a son of man coming! And he advanced to the Ancient of days and was introduced to him. ¹⁴ And to him was given the government and the honour and the kingdom; and all the peoples, tribes and languages are to serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall never pass away, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed.

¹⁸ These shall be removed, and the holy ones of the Most High shall take the kingdom and hold it to an age of the ages.

²⁷ For the kingdom and the dominion and the majesty of the kings who are under the whole heaven, is given to the holy ones of the Most High. And his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all the governments shall serve and obey him.

²¹ And they who have been preserved, shall go up from mount Sion to execute vengeance on the mountain of Esau. And the kingdom shall be the Lord's.

⁷ and I will make the bruised a remnant, and her who was put away, a mighty nation. And the Lord will reign over them on mount Sion henceforth and forever.

⁶ It is not however to be supposed that the word of God hath failed. For with regard to all the descendants of Israel, they are not Israel;

²⁴ then the end, when he shall deliver up the kingdom to God the father, when he shall have put a stop to all empire and all authority, and all power. ²⁵ For he must reign until he hath put all the enemies under his feet.

²⁹ And if you are Christ's, you are then the seed of Abraham and heirs according to promise.

¹⁶ And with regard to all who will walk by this rule, on them there will be peace and mercy, even upon the Israel of God.

³ for we are the circumcision, who serve God in spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in flesh.

⁸ but with respect to the son, "Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: The sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of rectitude:

¹⁵ Then the seventh angel sounded and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdoms of the world are become [the kingdom] of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for the ages of the ages.

⁴ And I saw thrones and to them who sat on them judgment was given, and [I saw] the souls of them who had been slain for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God and who had not worshipped the beast nor its image, nor received the mark on their forehead or on their hand. And they lived and reigned with the Christ the thousand years; ⁵ but the rest of the dead did not revive until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. ⁶ Happy and holy is he who hath a portion in this first resurrection. Over them the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and the Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years.

³ And nothing subject to a curse shall ever be there; but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall serve him ⁴ and see his face; and his name shall be on their foreheads. ⁵ And there shall be no night there; nor have they any need of a lamp or of the light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light; and they shall reign for the ages of the ages.

⁸ Whereupon Manoe prayed to the Lord, and said, Lord Adonaie! grant me that the man of God, whom thou didst send, may come to us again, and instruct us what we shall do to the child which is to be born. ⁹ And God hearkened to the voice of Manoe, and the angel of God came again to the woman. Now she was sitting in the field, and Manoe her husband was not with her. ¹⁰ So the woman hasted, and ran and told her husband, and said to him, The man hath appeared to me, who came to me before. ¹¹ Upon which Manoe arose, and went with his wife, and when he came to the man, he said to him, Art thou the man who spoke to my wife? And the angel said, I am. ¹² Then Manoe said, Now the thing will come to pass. How is the child to be educated, and what is he to do?

⁶ Whereupon he trembling and in amaze, said, Lord, What wouldst thou have me do? And the Lord said to him, Arise and go to the city and it will be told thee what thou must do."

⁴ For who can be free from stain? Surely none.

¹⁶ how abominable and filthy must man be; who drinketh iniquity in, like water!

⁴ For how can a mortal be just before the Lord or any offspring of woman make himself clean?

⁷ I proclaim the decree of the Lord; to me the Lord said, "Thou art my Son, this day I have begotten thee,

⁵ For behold I was born in iniquity; in sins my mother conceived me:

²⁰ but while he was thinking of this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said to him, "Joseph, son of David, fear not to take home Mary thy wife; for her pregnancy is from the Holy Spirit"

³ Whereupon the tempter coming to him, said, If thou art Son of God, command these stones to become loaves.

³³ And they who were in the vessel came and bowed down to him, saying, Thou art indeed Son of God.

⁶³ But Jesus was silent. Then the chief priest addressing him, said, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the son of God. ⁶⁴ Jesus saith to him, It is as thou hast spoken. Moreover I say to you, Hereafter you shall see the son of man sitting at the right hand of that Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.

⁵⁴ When the centurion, and they who were with him guarding Jesus, observed the earthquake, and what had happened, they were greatly terrified, and said, This was certainly a son of a God.

²⁴ saying, Forbear! what hast thou to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art; the Holy One of God.

³¹ Now behold thou shall conceive, and bear a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. ³² He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

⁴⁹ In answer to this, Nathaniel said to him, Rabbi, thou art the son of God. Thou art the king of Israel.

³⁶ And as they continued the journey, they came to a certain water. Whereupon the eunuch said, Behold! here is water. What hindereth my being baptized?

²⁰ I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live"not I myself any more, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in flesh, I live by that belief which I have in the son of God, who loved me and delivered up himself for me.

³ among whom when we also were all formerly leading our lives in the desires of our flesh, executing the dictates of the flesh, and the imaginations, and were naturally children of wrath even as the rest;

²⁶ For it suited us to have such a chief priest"one holy, innocent, undefined, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens, ²⁷ who is not under a daily necessity [as the chief priests are,] of offering sacrifices first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; for this he did once for all when he offered up himself. ²⁸ For the law constituteth men chief priests who have infirmities; but the word of the oath which succeedeth the law [constituted] the Son, who is consecrated forever.

²³ And the Lord said to Moses, Cannot the hand of the Lord furnish a sufficiency? Thou shalt now see whether my word shall come to pass to thee or not.

² for I know all that you know and am not inferior to you in knowledge.

¹⁷ self-existent Lord, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and by thy high and exalted arm. From thee nothing can be hid.

²⁷ I the Lord am the God of all flesh. From me nothing can be hid.

⁶ Thus saith the Lord Almighty, If this shall appear impossible in the view of the remnant of this people in these clays; shall it also be impossible in my view, saith the Lord Almighty?

²⁶ Thereupon Jesus looking earnestly at them said, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

²⁷ Whereupon Jesus, looking stedfastly on them, saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God. For with God all things are possible.

²⁷ He said, Things, which are impossible to men, are possible to God.

²¹ who will transform the body of this our humble state, that it may be made conformable to his glorious body, according to the energy of his power to subject all to himself.

²⁵ Now therefore, my Lord, confirm the word which thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and his house, confirm it everlastingly, Lord Almighty, O God of Israel. ²⁶ And now as thou hast spoken let thy name be magnified for ever. ²⁷ O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, thou hast made a revelation to thy servant, saying, I am to build a house for thee; therefore thy servant hath found this disposition of his heart to make this prayer to thee. ²⁸ And now, Lord, my Lord, Thou art God, and thy words will be true, and thou hast spoken these good things respecting thy servant, ²⁹ now then begin and bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee. Since thou Lord, my Lord, hast spoken, therefore with thy blessing, let the house of thy servant be blessed, that it may continue for ever.

¹⁶ Lord I am thy servant; I am thy servant and the son of thy handmaid. Thou hast burst my bonds asunder:

³⁸ Confirm thine oracle to thy servant that thou mayst be feared.

²⁰ He disputed not against the promise of God by unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God, ²¹ and being fully persuaded that he was able to perform what he had promised.

⁴⁰ Thus did Joshua smite all the hilly country, and Nageb, and the plain, and Asedoth, and the kings thereof. They did not leave one of them alive. They utterly destroyed every one who breathed the breath of life, as the Lord God of Israel had commanded.

⁴⁸ And in the hilly country, Samir, and Jether, and Socha, ⁴⁹ and Renna, and city of letters, this is Dabir, ⁵⁰ and Anon, and Es, and Man, and Aisam, ⁵¹ and Gosom, and Chalu, and Channa, and Gelom; eleven cities with their villages; ⁵² Airem, and Remna, and Soma, ⁵³ and Jemain, and Baithachu, and Phakua, ⁵⁴ and Eyma, and city Arbok, this is Chebron, and Soraith, nine cities with their sheepcots: ⁵⁵ Maor, and Chermel, and Ozib, and Itan, ⁵⁶ and Jariel, and Arikam, and Zakanaim, ⁵⁷ and Gabaa, and Thamnatha, nine cities with their villages; ⁵⁸ Ailua, and Bethsur, and Geddon, ⁵⁹ and Magaroth, and Baithanam, and Thekum, six cities with their villages: Theko, and Ephratha, this is Baithlehem, and Phagor, and Aitan, and Kulon, and Tatam, and Thobes, and Karem, and Galem, and Thether, and Manocho, eleven cities with their villages:

⁷ and he had set apart Kades, in Galilee, on mount Nephthaleim, and Sychem, on mount Ephraim, and the city Arbok, which is Chebron, on the mountain of Juda:

⁹ So the tribe of the children of Juda, and the tribe of the children of Symeon, gave, and there were given from the tribe of the children of Benjamin, the following cities which were assigned ¹⁰ to the children of Aaron, of the community of Kaath, who were Levites; because the lot fell to them, ¹¹ they gave them Kariatharbok, the capital of the Enakims, which is Chebron, on the mountain of Juda. Now the suburbs around it,

⁶⁵ And all in the neighbourhood were struck with awe. And the fame of all these things spread through the whole hill country of Judea.

²² and the children struggled within her and she said; If it is to be so with me, what doth this portend? So she went to inquire of the Lord.

¹⁰ I was cast on thy care from my very birth; from my mother's womb thou art my God;

⁴⁴ For behold! soon as the sound of thy salutation reached mine ear, the babe within me leaped for joy.

⁶⁷ And Zacharias his father was filled with a holy spirit, and he prophesied, saying,

¹ Now Jesus being full of a holy spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the spirit into the wilderness;

⁸ Then Peter being filled with a holy spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders of Israel,

³ look out therefore, brethren, from among yourselves seven men of good reputation, full of a holy spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint to this office.

⁵⁵ But he being full of a holy spirit, having his eyes fixed towards heaven, beheld the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God:

¹⁰ I was in the spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, like the sound of a trumpet,

¹⁸ and by the seed of thee all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because thou hast hearkened to my voice.

⁶ For thou wilt give him everlasting blessing; and with the joy of thy countenance make him glad.

² Thou art fairer than the sons of men: grace is poured out by thy lips; for this cause God hath blessed thee forever.

¹⁷ Let his name be blessed for ever! His name shall endure longer than the sun: and by him all the tribes of the earth shall be blessed. All the nations shall hail him happy. ¹⁸ Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel; who alone doth wonderful things. ¹⁹ And blessed be his glorious name for ever and ever: and let all the earth be filled with his glory. Amen. Amen.

⁴⁸ because he hath regarded the low condition of his handmaid. For behold! henceforth all generations will call me happy.

³⁸ saying, Blessed be the king who is coming in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!

²⁶ therefore my heart was gladdened, and my tongue exulted with joy; and moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope, ²⁷ that thou wilt not leave my soul in the mansion of the dead, nor suffer thy Holy One to see corruption. ²⁸ Thou hast made known to me the ways of life. Thou with thy presence wilt fill me with joy."

⁵ whose ancestors were the patriarchs, and from whom, with regard to flesh, the Christ is [descended] who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

² looking forward to Jesus, the leader and perfecter of this faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured a cross, despising shame, and hath taken a seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

¹⁰ Upon which she fell on her face, and made an obeisance to the ground, and said to him, How have I found favour in thy sight, that thou shouldst take notice of me, seeing I am a stranger?

⁴¹ she arose, and bowed down to the ground on her face, and said, Behold thy servant is ready to be a house maid to wash the feet of thy servants.

¹ A Psalm. By David. The Lord said to my Lord; sit at my right hand; till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

¹⁴ but John earnestly opposed him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by thee. And thou comest to me!"

¹¹ That to you there is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

⁷ and for that reason I did not think myself worthy to come to thee. Say but a word, and my servant will be healed.

⁴² when David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand ⁴³ until I make thine enemies thy footstool, ⁴⁴ David therefore calleth him Lord, how then is he his son?

⁵ he then poureth water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and wipe them with the towel, with which he was girded. ⁶ He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. Whereupon Peter saith to him, "Master, thou wash my feet?"! ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing thou dost not comprehend at present, but thou shalt know hereafter. ⁸ Peter saith to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee thou hast no portion with me.

¹³ You call me The teacher and the master; and you say right, for so I am.

²⁸ And Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God.

³ upon nothing out of a spirit of contention or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind esteeming one another better than yourselves,

⁸ nay more, I do therefore indeed count all things but refuse, on account of the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have given up all and account them but dregs, that I may gain Christ

²⁰ And they arose early in the morning, and went out to the wilderness of Thekoe. And as they were marching out, Josaphat stood and cried with a loud voice, and said, Hear me, Juda, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem. Trust in the Lord our God, and you shall be confirmed in your confidence. Confide in his prophet, and you shall prosper.

²⁰ Now, behold, thou shalt be dumb and unable to speak, until the day when these tidings shall be accomplished; because thou hast not believed my words, which shall be confirmed in their season.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, Did I not tell thee, if thou wouldst believe thou shouldst see the glory of God?

²⁹ Jesus saith to him, Thomas, Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed? Happy they who have not seen me and yet believe.

¹ My heart was strengthened by the Lord; By my God, my horn was exalted; Over my enemies my mouth was enlarged; I was made glad by thy salvation. ² Because there is none holy like the Lord, And none is righteous like our God, There is none holy besides thee. ³ Boast not, nor speak haughtily, Let not arrogance proceed from your mouth. Because the Lord is a God of all knowledge; A God who prepareth his own designs; ⁴ The bow of the mighty he hath made weak. And the weak have girded themselves with strength: ⁵ They who were full of bread have been brought low; And they who were hungry have reached land. For she who was barren hath born seven children; And she who abounded in children hath been made weak. ⁶ The Lord killeth, and giveth life; He bringeth down to the grave, and raiseth up. ⁷ The Lord impoverished, and maketh rich; He humbleth, and he exalteth on high. ⁸ He lifteth up the needy from the ground; And raiseth the beggar from a dunghill; To seat them among a people's princes; And he causeth them to possess a throne of glory. ⁹ He granteth the petitioner his prayer, And hath blessed the years of the righteous; Because a man is not mighty in strength, ¹⁰ The Lord will make his adversary weak. Holy is the Lord. Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom, Nor the mighty man boast of his power; Nor let the rich man boast of his riches: But let him who boasteth, boast of this; That the Lord understandeth, and knoweth, And that he executeth judgment and justice in the land. The Lord ascended up to heaven and thundered; He will judge the highest on earth: To our kings he giveth power, And he will exalt the horn of his anointed.

² Let my soul glory in the Lord: let the meek hear and be gladdened. ³ magnify the Lord with me; and let us extol his name together.

⁹ But let my soul rejoice in the Lord, and be delighted with his salvation.

¹ By David. Bless the Lord, my soul; and all within me, his holy name. ² Bless the Lord, my soul; and forget not all the praises of him;

¹⁵ for this cause the glory of the Lord will be in the isles of the sea. In the isles of the sea the name of the Lord will be glorious. ¹⁶ [c] "Lord the God of Israel! from the outskirts of the earth we have heard of thy wonders: there is hope for the righteous." [p] Let them say also, "Woe to the rebels who reject the law!"

²⁵ On account of the Lord they shall be acquitted; and in God all the seed of Israel will glory.

¹⁰ And they shall rejoice in the Lord with joy.[c] Rejoice in the Lord, my soul, for he hath clothed me with the mantle of Salvation, and with an under garment of gladness, he hath crowned me as a bridegroom with a crown and adorned me as a bride, with jewels,

¹⁷ Since the fig tree will not flourish, nor will there be fruit on the vines; the product of the olive will fail and the fields will supply no food; For want of food the flocks have failed, and there are no kine in the stalls; ¹⁸ As for me, I will rejoice in the Lord; I shall have joy for God my saviour.

¹¹ And not only so. but we also boast in God. through out Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now obtained this reconciliation,

³¹ so that as it is written, Let him who boasteth boast in the Lord."

¹⁴ But thanks be to God who causeth us always to triumph in the Christ, and who manifesteth by us, in every place, the odour of the knowledge of him.

⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say, rejoice.

⁸ whom without knowing him personally you love; in whom though you do not now see him, yet you believe, and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorified joy,

² Behold! my God is my Saviour, I will trust in him and not be afraid. Because the Lord is my glory and my praise; and hath become unto me salvation; ³ therefore draw ye water with gladness from the wells of thanksgiving.

²¹ If they will proclaim, let them draw near and know at once, who hath published these things from the beginning: then let them be announced to you. I am God and there is no other besides me; a just God and a saviour be sides me there is none. ²² Turn to me and ye shall be saved, ye from the farthest part of the earth, I am God and there is none else.

¹⁸ As for me, I will rejoice in the Lord; I shall have joy for God my saviour.

¹⁴ Rejoice, daughters of Sion, Make proclamation, daughters of Jerusalem! Be glad and rejoice with thy whole heart, daughter of Jerusalem. ¹⁵ The Lord hath taken away thy transgressions; he hath redeemed thee out of the hand of thine enemies. The king of Israel; the Lord is in the midst of thee; thou shalt no more see evils. ¹⁶ At that time the Lord will say to Jerusalem, " Take courage, Sion. Let not thy hands hang down. ¹⁷ The Lord thy God is with thee. The Mighty one will save thee. He will bring thee gladness and renew thee in his love; and rejoice over thee with joy as in the day of a festival;

⁹ Rejoice exceedingly, O daughter of Sion! Make proclamation, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold thy king is coming for thee. He is righteous and a saviour. He is meek and mounted on an ass, even a young colt.

¹ Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the appointment of God our Saviour, and the Lord Jesus Christ our hope; Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is by Christ Jesus;

³ for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our saviour,

³ and in his own times promulgated as his word, by a proclamation with which I am entrusted, according to the appointment of the saviour our God;

¹⁰ not embezzling, but shewing all good fidelity, that they may in all things adorn the doctrine of our saviour God.

¹³ waiting for the blessed hope and the bright display of the glory of the great God, and saviour of us Jesus Christ,

⁴ but when the kindness and love of God our saviour for man was brightly displayed, ⁵ not for works of righteousness which we had done, but according to his own mercy; he saved us by a bath of regeneration, and a renewal of a holy spirit, ⁶ which he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our saviour,

²⁵ to the only wise God, our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.

¹³ Upon which Leia said, Happy am I; for the women will call me happy. So she called his name Aser.

¹¹ And she vowed a vow to the Lord, saying, Adonai, Lord, Eloe Sabbaoth! If thou wilt look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and give thy handmaid a man child, I will dedicate him before thee, as a gift to the day of his death; and he shall not drink wine, nor fermented liquor, nor shall a razor come on his head.

⁸ He lifteth up the needy from the ground; And raiseth the beggar from a dunghill; To seat them among a people's princes; And he causeth them to possess a throne of glory.

⁸ But now, thus shalt thou say to my servant David, Thus saith the Lord Almighty, I took thee from the sheepcot to be ruler over my people; over Israel;

¹⁸ Whereupon king David went in and sat down before the Lord, and said, Who am I, Lord, my Lord! and what is my house that thou hast loved me to such a degree! ¹⁹ Though I was contemptibly little before thee, Lord, my Lord! yet thon hast spoken respecting the house of thy servant for a great while to come. With regard to this law of the man, Lord, my Lord!

¹⁷ He hath regarded the prayer of the lowly, and hath not despised their supplication.

⁷ Who raiseth the distressed from the ground, and lifteth the needy from a dunghill: ⁸ to seat him with princes; with the chiefs of his people.

²³ because in our affliction the Lord remembered us; for his mercy endureth forever;

⁶ For the Lord is high and looketh down on the things which are low: and from afar he knoweth the things which are high.

² For all these things my hand hath made: and all these things are mine saith the Lord. Upon whom therefore will I look down, but upon him only who is humble and quiet, and who trembleth at my words?

¹² and all the nations will hail you happy: for you will be a beloved land, saith the Lord Almighty.

²⁷ As he was thus speaking, it happened that a woman among the crowd, raising her voice, said to him, Happy the womb which bore thee and the breasts which thou hast sucked!

²⁶ For observe, brethren, this call of you, that there are not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many of illustrious birth; ²⁷ but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise; and the weak things of the world God hath made choice of to put to shame the strong ²⁸ and the ignoble of this world, and those of no account, God hath chosen; nay, the very nothings, to put a stop to the operation of the things which are,

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, hath not God chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom, which he hath promised to them who love him? ⁶ But you have treated the poor with disdain. Do not the rich domineer over you? Do they not drag you to tribunals?

¹¹ Who among the gods is like thee, Lord? Who is like thee? Glorified among Holies; Marvellous among Glories; working miracles!

² Because there is none holy like the Lord, And none is righteous like our God, There is none holy besides thee.

⁸ Who is the glorious king? The Lord strong and mighty: the Lord mighty in battle.

¹⁹ thy power and thy righteousness, God most High; the great things which thou hast done. Who is like thee, God? ²⁰ what afflictions many and sore hast thou shewn me! But thou hast returned and quickened me; and brought me up again from the depths of the earth. ²¹ Thou hast multiplied thy saving mercy: thou hast returned and comforted me; and hast brought me up again from the depths of the earth.

³ Let them praise thy great name, for it is awful and holy.

⁹ Extol the Lord our God and worship on his holy hill: for the Lord our God is holy.

⁹ He hath sent redemption for his people; he hath enjoined his covenant forever: holy and awful is his name.

² Then was our mouth filled with joy, and our tongue with exultation; then did they say among the nations, "The Lord hath done great things for them." ³ The Lord hath done great things for us; we are transported with rapturous joy.

²⁴ Therefore thus saith the sovereign Lord of hosts. "Alas for the rulers of Israel; for my wrath against these adversaries shall not abate. On these enemies of mine I will execute judgment:

³ And they cried one to another and said, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts; the whole earth is filled with his glory."

¹⁵ Thus saith the Most High, who on earth inhabiteth eternity, who is Holy among holies; whose name is THE MOST HIGH; who at rest in the holies giveth patience to the humble, and life to them who are of a contrite heart;

¹ [c] Who is this who is coming from Edom? What redness of mantles from Bosor! He so magnificent in apparel? He marcheth with majesty! [M] I proclaim righteousness and the judgment of salvation.

⁶ They are silver which can be formed into plates.

¹¹ But the Lord was with me as a mighty warrior, therefore they persecuted and could not contrive. They were put to great confusion. Because they had not a due sense of their infamous practices, which are never to be forgotten;

¹³ And Jesus immediately permitted them. Whereupon the unclean spirits, having gone out, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down a precipice into the sea, [now they were about two thousand] and were drowned in the sea.

²⁰ Now to him who is able to do infinitely above all that we can ask or conceive, according to that power which is operative in us

⁸ And the four animate beings had, each of them six wings around and underneath they were full of eyes. And they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!

⁴ Who would not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? For thou alone art perfect. For all the nations will come and worship before thee, For thy rules of rectitude are made manifest.

⁷ And I will establish this my covenant with thee and thy seed after thee, throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be thy God and the God of thy seed after thee.

⁶ but shewing mercy for thousands [of generations] to them who love me and keep my commandments.

⁶ And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the God compassionate and merciful, long suffering and abundant in goodness and truth, ⁷ keeping kindness and mercy for thousands, taking away transgressions, iniquities and sins, will by no means clear the guilty, when he bringeth the transgressions of fathers on children and children s children to the third and fourth generation.

¹⁹ How great, Lord, is the abundance of thy kindness, which thou hast laid up in store for them who fear thee; hast provided for them who trust in thee before the sons of men.

⁹ moreover his salvation will be near them who fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.

¹¹ For high as the heaven is from the earth; the Lord hath enlarged his mercy for them who fear him.

¹⁷ But the mercy of the Lord is from age to age over them who fear him: and his saving goodness over children's children, ¹⁸ for them who keep his covenant, and remember his commands to do them.

¹³ he hath blessed them, who fear the Lord, both small and great.

⁴ Let all who fear the Lord say, For he is good. For to everlasting his mercy endureth.

¹⁹ He will fulfil the desire of them who fear him: he will hear their prayer and save them.

¹¹ The Lord delighteth in them who fear him, and in all them who trust in his mercy.

¹⁶ Against these things they who feared the Lord spoke to one another; and the Lord hearkened and heard and wrote a book of remembrance before him for them who fear the Lord and revere his name. ¹⁷ And they shall be, saith the Lord Almighty, an acquisition for me, on the day which I make; and I will make choice of them, as a man maketh choice of a son who serveth him. ¹⁸ And when you shall be converted, you shall see the difference between a righteous man and one who is unrighteous; and between him who serveth God and him who serveth not.

⁵ And there came out from the throne a voice, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants and ye who fear him, both small and great.

⁵ So when the Lord God saw that the wickedness of the men on the earth was multiplied, and that every one was in his heart studiously and continually bent upon evils,

²¹ And the Lord God smelled a sweet savour, and the Lord God having come to a determination, said, "I will no more curse the ground on account of the works of men. Though the imagination of man is studiously bent upon evils from his youth, I will not on that account again smite all living flesh, as I have done.

⁶ Thy right hand, Lord, is glorious in power. Thy right hand, Lord, dashed enemies to pieces. ⁷ With thy great glory thou didst crush thine adversaries. Thou sentest forth thy wrath; it consumed them like stubble.

⁹ The enemy said, I will pursue and overtake, I will divide the spoil; I will glut my vengeance: My sword shall slay; my hand shall prevail. ¹⁰ Thou didst send forth thy blast, the sea covered them; They sank like lead in the mighty water. ¹¹ Who among the gods is like thee, Lord? Who is like thee? Glorified among Holies; Marvellous among Glories; working miracles! ¹² Thou didst stretch forth thy right hand, The earth swallowed them up, ¹³ In thy kindness thou hast been the guide Of this thy people whom thou hast redeemed. By thy power thou hast called them forth to thy holy place for resting.

¹¹ I know now that the Lord is great above all the gods, for this reason because they were set against these.

³⁴ Or hath God come, and made trial to take for himself a nation out of the midst of a nation, by trials, and by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and with a strong hand, and an outstretched arm, and with great visions, according to all that the Lord our God hath done in Egypt, before thine eyes?

¹⁹ Now in case any one shall hear the words of this curse, and bless himself in his heart, saying, Good luck betide me! I will walk in the error of my own heart, that the sinner may not involve the guiltless in ruin with himself. ²⁰ God will not be propitious to him, but most assuredly the anger of the Lord, and his indignation, will then be kindled against that man; and all the curses of this covenant, which are written in this book, shall cleave to him; and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven.

³ Boast not, nor speak haughtily, Let not arrogance proceed from your mouth. Because the Lord is a God of all knowledge; A God who prepareth his own designs; ⁴ The bow of the mighty he hath made weak. And the weak have girded themselves with strength:

⁹ Hast thou an arm to contend against the Lord, or dost thou thunder with a voice against Him? ¹⁰ Assume then majesty and power, and array thyself with glory and excellence; ¹¹ and send forth angels in wrath, and humble everyone who is insolent. ¹² Extinguish also the haughty, and turn the wicked into instant corruption.

¹ Why did nations rage? And tribes meditate vain things? ² The kings of the earth combined; and the chiefs assembled together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, [saying] ³ "Let us break their bands asunder and throw off from us their yoke." ⁴ He who dwelleth in heaven will laugh them to scorn; the Lord will treat them with derision. ⁵ Then will he speak to them in his wrath and trouble them with his sore displeasure. ⁶ But as for me, by him I am appointed king on Sion his holy mountain.

¹⁰ The Lord dissipateth the counsels of nations, and disannulleth the devices of peoples. He disannulleth also the counsels of chiefs.

⁹ I will praise thee for this age because thou hast made it; and wait for thy name, because it is good in the sight of thy saints."

⁵ Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: that my joyful lips may praise thy name.

¹⁰ Thou hast humbled the proud like one slain; with thy mighty arm thou hast scattered thy foes.

¹³ Thine arm is endowed with power; let thy hand be strong; thy right hand exalted.

¹ A Psalm by David. Sing to the Lord, a new song, that the Lord hath done wonderful things. His own right hand and his holy arm hath saved him.

¹⁵ A sound of joy and deliverance in the tents of the righteous! The right hand of the Lord hath exerted power!

¹² But it shall come to pass, when the Lord hath accomplished his whole work on mount Sion and Jerusalem; that I will cast a look on the stout heart; on the chief ruler of the Assyrians, and on the loftiness of the glory of his eyes. ¹³ For he said, "With this power I will perform exploits; and by the wisdom of mine understanding I will remove the boundaries of nations, and make a prey of their strength, ¹⁴ and shake inhabited cities, and seize with my hand the whole World as a nest; and carry off the inhabitants like deserted eggs. There is none who can escape me or chirp against me." ¹⁵ Shall an axe boast without him who cutteth with it; or a saw lift itself up, without him who draweth it; as one could lift up a staff or a piece of wood? No; this shall not be permitted: ¹⁶ indeed the Lord of hosts will send disgrace on thy honour, and on thy glory a burning fire shall be kindled: ¹⁷ and the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and shall hallow him with a burning fire, and consume his substance like dry grass. ¹⁸ On that day there shall be an extinction of the mountains, and the hills, and the forests; and it shall consume from the soul even to the flesh: and he who fleeth shall be like one fleeing from blazing fire. ¹⁹ And those of them who are left shall be few in number, so that a child may write them down.

¹⁰ behold the Lord! The Lord is coming with majesty; and his arm with dominion. Behold his11 reward is with him; and his work, before him.

⁹ Awake, awake, Jerusalem! and clothe thyself with the strength of thine arm. Awake as at the beginning of day.

¹⁰ let the Lord therefore make bare his holy arm in the sight of all the nations! and let all the ends of the earth see the salvation come from our God.

¹² That glorious arm of his which led Moses by the right hand? He forced back the water from before him, to make himself an everlasting name.

²⁹ [p] I have heard indeed of the pride of Moab: he was very proud; and of his haughtiness; his heart was elated. ³⁰ [J] But as for me I know his works: is not this his desert? Hath he not acted thus?

³⁷ Now therefore I Nabuchodonosar praise and extol and glorify the king of heaven; for all his works are true and his ways are judgments and all them who walk in pride he can abase.

²⁵ Now this is what is written, Mane, Thekel, Phares. ²⁶ The interpretation of the decree is this. Mane; God hath measured thy kingdom and brought it to a conclusion. ²⁷ Thekel; It hath been weighed in a balance and found wanting. ²⁸ Phares; Thy kingdom is taken away and given to Medes and Persians. ²⁹ Then Baltasar gave orders and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold about his neck, and proclamation was made concerning him that he was a chief, third in rank, in the kingdom. ³⁰ And that very night Baltasar the Chaldean king was slain, ³¹ and Darius the Mede assumed the kingdom, being sixty two years of age.

²¹ because when they knew God, they did not glorify him as God, nor give him thanks, but became vain by their ill- grounded reasonings, and their foolish heart was darkened;

⁵ demolishing surmises and every mount raised against the knowledge of God, and bringing every sentiment captive to the obedience of the Christ;

⁵ Likewise ye who are young, submit to those more advanced in years. And being all submissive to one another; adorn yourselves with humility; because "God resisteth the proud and granteth favour to the humble;"

⁸ therefore in one day these calamities shall come upon her, pestilence and sorrow and famine; and she shall be consumed with fire; for the Lord God who judgeth her is mighty.

⁴ The bow of the mighty he hath made weak. And the weak have girded themselves with strength:

⁶ The Lord killeth, and giveth life; He bringeth down to the grave, and raiseth up. ⁷ The Lord impoverished, and maketh rich; He humbleth, and he exalteth on high. ⁸ He lifteth up the needy from the ground; And raiseth the beggar from a dunghill; To seat them among a people's princes; And he causeth them to possess a throne of glory.

¹¹ Who setteth on high them who are low, and raiseth up them who have been ruined. ¹² Who changeth the counsels of the crafty, so that their hands can perform no enterprise. ¹³ Who entangleth the wise in their wisdom, and defeateth the counsel of the artful.

²⁴ is because the Lord superintended all in ways unsearchable; glorious and wonderful, not to be numbered. ²⁵ "As he knoweth their works: he should bring on night and they should be humbled. ²⁶ But hath he extinguished the wicked though they are visible before him? ²⁷ Because they turned aside from the law of God and did not acknowledge his judgments, ²⁸ when they cause the cry of the poor to ascend to him, he should hearken to the cry of the poor."

⁴⁰ Contempt hath been poured on their princes: and he hath caused them to wander in a trackless desert. ⁴¹ Then out of affliction he hath helped the needy, and hath made families like a flock.

⁶ and superintended the things below him in heaven and on the earth?

¹⁴ for out of prison he may come to reign. Because even in his own kingdom he was needy,

²⁴ and all the trees of the plain shall know that I am the Lord who bringeth down the lofty tree, and exalteth the tree which is low, and who causeth the green tree to wither, and the withered tree to flourish. I the Lord have spoken and I will perform.

¹¹ In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David which hath fallen; I will rebuild those parts of it which have fallen to decay, and repair what have been demolished. I will indeed rebuild it as in the days of old,

³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? So they were stumbled at him.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house acquitted, and not the other. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, but he who humbleth himself shall be exalted.

⁹ Let the brother who is in low circumstances glory in his exaltation; ¹⁰ and him who is rich, in his humiliation, because he shall pass away like a flower of the grass.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and he will exalt you. Speak not, brethren, against one another. He who speaketh against a brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh against law, and judgeth law. Now if thou judgest law, thou art not a doer of law, but a judge.

⁵ They who were full of bread have been brought low; And they who were hungry have reached land. For she who was barren hath born seven children; And she who abounded in children hath been made weak.

¹⁰ Rich men have become poor and hungry: But they who seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

⁸ O let them praise the Lord for his mercies; and for his wonderful dealings with the sons of men: ⁹ because he hath satisfied the longing soul; and filled the hungry with good things.

⁷ who keepeth truth forever, executing judgment for the aggrieved, giving food to the hungry.

²⁹ I will indeed raise up for them a plant of peace, and they shall no more be consumed with famine in the land; nor shall they any more bear the revile of nations;

⁶ Happy they who hunger and thirst for righteousness; for they shall be satisfied.

²¹ Happy ye, who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied! Happy ye, who weep now; for you will laugh!

²⁴ But alas! for you who are rich, for you are receiving your consolation.

¹⁶ Then he spoke a parable to them saying, There was a certain rich man, whose ground produced plenteously. ¹⁷ Whereupon he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do; for I have not room to store my crops. ¹⁸ Then he said, I will do this. I will pull down my store houses and build larger, and there lay up all my produce and my good things. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul; Soul, thou hast many good things laid up in store for many years: take thine ease; eat; drink; and be joyful. ²⁰ Whereupon God said to him; Fool, this very night this soul of thine will be demanded of thee. Whose then will those things be which thou hast provided? ²¹ Thus let every one [say] to himself who is heaping up treasure and is not rich for God.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man who was clad with purple and cotton robes, and who feasted daily in a splendid manner. ²⁰ And there was a certain poor man, named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ desirous indeed to be fed with the crumbs which fell from his table: and moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² At length this poor man died, and was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom. And the rich man died also, and was buried. ²³ And in the mansion of the dead having lifted up his eyes, being in torment, he seeth Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ Whereupon he cried and said, Father, Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life time; and Lazarus in like manner, his evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

¹¹ The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus, O God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; nor even as that publican. ¹² I fast twice a week. I pay tithes of all that I possess. ¹³ But the publican, who stood at a distance, did not presume so much as to lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying; God, be merciful to me a sinner. ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house acquitted, and not the other. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, but he who humbleth himself shall be exalted.

²⁴ When Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, With what difficulty will men who have these things, enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ for it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

¹¹ Then Jesus took the loaves and having given thanks, distributed to the disciples; and the disciples distributed to them who were on the ground; and in like manner of the fishes, as much as they chose. ¹² And when they were satisfied, he saith to his disciples, Gather up the fragments which remain, that nothing may be lost. ¹³ So they gathered, and with the fragments, which the people after eating had left of the five barley loaves, they filled twelve panniers.

³⁵ Then Jesus said to them, I am the bread of that life. He who cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he who believeth in me, shall never thirst.

²⁶ For observe, brethren, this call of you, that there are not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many of illustrious birth;

⁸ You are now full! you are now rich! you have now reigned without us. I wish indeed that you did reign, that we also might reign with you.

¹ Come, now, ye rich; weep, and raise a mournful cry for the miseries which are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are covered with rust; and the rust of them will be a witness against you, and corrode your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold the wages of the labourers who have reaped your fields, which you have withholden, raise a cry; and the outcries of these reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ You have lived luxuriously on the earth. You have indulged voluptuousness. You have pampered your hearts, as on a day of public feasting. ⁶ You have condemned you have murdered the just one. Is he not setting himself in array against you?

¹⁷ because thou sayest, "I am rich and become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. ¹⁸ I advise thee to purchase of me gold tried in the fire that thou mayst be rich, and white raiment that thou mayst be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayst see.

¹⁶ They shall no more hunger, nor shall they thirst any more; nor shall the sun dart upon them; nor any scorching heat: ¹⁷ for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will tend them and guide them to living fountains of water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

³ He remembered his mercy for Jacob; and his truth to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

²¹ Remember these things, Jacob, even thou Israel, for thou art my servant. I have made thee my servant; therefore O Israel do not thou forget me.

³ Hearken to me house of Jacob and all ye remnant of Israel, who have been carried from the womb, and instructed from childhood to old age; ⁴ I am the self existent, even till you grow old, I am, I sustain you: I made you and I will bear with you; I will lift you up and I will save you.

¹⁴ [M] Hath Sion then said, "The Lord hath quite forsaken me, "and, "Why hath the Lord forgotten me?" ¹⁵ can a woman forget her child? or not have compassion on the offspring of her womb? Grant that a woman may forget even these, but I will not forget thee, said the Lord. ¹⁶ Behold I have engraven thy walls on my hands; and thou art continually before me.

⁶ The Lord hath not called thee as a wife forsaken and disconsolate; nor as a wife that hath been hated from her youth. ⁷ Thy God hath said, "I left thee for a little while; but with great mercy I will compassionate thee: ⁸ in a short wrath I turned away my face from thee; but with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on thee." The Lord who delivered thee hath said, ⁹ "From the flood which was in Noah's time this is my purpose; as I solemnly promised him at that time that I would no more be angry with the earth on thine account, nor in rebuking thee overturn the mountains; ¹⁰ and that thy hills should no more be moved; so my kindness for thee shall not fail, nor shall the covenant of thy peace ever be changed: for he said for thee, Be appeased, Lord."

⁷ [c] I recollected the loving kindness of the Lord; the mercies of the Lord in all those things which he retributeth for us. The Lord is a good judge to the house of Israel. He dealeth with us according to his tender mercy and according to the abundance of his saving goodness, ⁸ and said "Is not this my people? Children should not rebel." And he became their Saviour from all their distress. ⁹ It was not an ambassador nor a messenger; but he himself saved them. Through his love and his indulgence to them, he himself redeemed them and took them up, and exalted them all the days of old. ¹⁰ But they rebelled and provoked his holy spirit; so he became their enemy. He fought against them; ¹¹ though he remembered the days of old. O! where is he who caused the shepherd of his flock to come up out of the sea? Where is he, who put his holy spirit in them? ¹² That glorious arm of his which led Moses by the right hand? He forced back the water from before him, to make himself an everlasting name. ¹³ He led them through the deep, like a horse through a desert; and they were not fatigued: ¹⁴ and like cattle through a plain. A spirit from the Lord descended and conducted them. Thus thou .didst lead this people of thine, to make thyself a glorious name. ¹⁵ Return from heaven and take a view from the house of thy sanctuary and thy glory. Where is thy zeal and thy majesty? Where the abundance of thy loving kindness and tender affections, that thou hast withdrawn thyself from us? ¹⁶ For thou art our father. Because Abraham knoweth us not, and Israel hath not acknowledged us; do thou, Lord, our father, do thou deliver us. From the beginning thy name is upon us;

³ The Lord from afar hath appeared for him: with everlasting love I have loved thee; therefore I have drawn thee into compassion.

²⁰ Ephraim is a beloved son; my darling child; since my words are in him I will surely remember him. For this cause I have been anxious for him, I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord.

²⁰ All our sins he will give up for truth to Jacob, as an act of mercy to Abraham as he sware to our fathers, according to the days which have been heretofore.

¹⁴ Rejoice, daughters of Sion, Make proclamation, daughters of Jerusalem! Be glad and rejoice with thy whole heart, daughter of Jerusalem. ¹⁵ The Lord hath taken away thy transgressions; he hath redeemed thee out of the hand of thine enemies. The king of Israel; the Lord is in the midst of thee; thou shalt no more see evils. ¹⁶ At that time the Lord will say to Jerusalem, " Take courage, Sion. Let not thy hands hang down. ¹⁷ The Lord thy God is with thee. The Mighty one will save thee. He will bring thee gladness and renew thee in his love; and rejoice over thee with joy as in the day of a festival; ¹⁸ when I have gathered those of you who have been bruised." [J] Ha! who is this that hath taken up a reproach against her? ¹⁹ Behold here am I; I am dealing with thee for thy sake at that time, saith the Lord, and I will save her who hath been trodden down; and take back her who hath been put away; and I will make them a boast and renowned in every land. ²⁰ And they shall be ashamed at that time when I deal kindly with you. Even at the time when I take you back. For I will make you renowned and a boast among all the people of the earth, when I bring back your captivity before their eyes, saith the Lord.

⁹ Rejoice exceedingly, O daughter of Sion! Make proclamation, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold thy king is coming for thee. He is righteous and a saviour. He is meek and mounted on an ass, even a young colt. ¹⁰ He will destroy chariots out of Ephraim and horses out of Jerusalem: and the battle bow shall be destroyed. And there shall be a multitude and peace from the nations; and he shall rule over waters to the sea, and over rivers to the ends of the earth. ¹¹ As for thee, thou by the blood of thy covenant hast sent forth thy prisoners out of a pit which hath no water.

⁷⁰ [as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets of old] ⁷¹ a deliverance from our enemies, and out of the hand of all who hate us ⁷² in kindness to our fathers, and in remembrance of his holy covenant ⁷³ [as he sware to our father Abraham] ⁷⁴ that he would grant us, that we, being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, may serve him without fear, ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

³ and I will bless them, who bless thee; and those who curse thee I will curse: and by thee all the tribes of the earth shalt be blessed.

⁴ and multiply thy seed like the stars of heaven. And to thy seed I will give all this land; and by thy seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

¹⁴ And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth and shall spread abroad to the west and the south, and the north and the east. And by thee all the tribes of the earth shall be blessed, namely by the seed of thee.

⁶ ye seed of Abraham, his servants; ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones; ⁷ he is the Lord, our God, in all this land are his judgments. ⁸ He remembered forever his covenant; a word which he gave in charge for a thousand generations: ⁹ the covenant which he made with Abraham, and that oath of his to Isaak, ¹⁰ which he confirmed to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant;

¹¹ The Lord hath sworn a truth to David, and will not annul it; of the fruit of thy body I will set on thy throne; ¹² if thy children keep my covenant, and these my testimonies, which I will teach them, their children also shall sit on thy throne forever. ¹³ For the Lord hath chosen Sion, and made choice of it for his habitation. ¹⁴ This shall be my rest forever. Here I will dwell, for I have chosen it. ¹⁵ With blessings I will bless her provision; and satisfy her poor with bread. ¹⁶ Her priests I will clothe with salvation; and her saints shall shout for joy. ¹⁷ I will cause a horn for David to spring up there; I have prepared a lamp for mine anointed.

²⁸ With respect to these glad tidings, they are enemies on your account; but with respect to the choice, they are beloved on account of the fathers. ²⁹ For the favours and choice of God are not reversed.

¹⁶ and the promises were made to Abraham and the seed of him [it is not said "and to the seeds" as if it was a covenant for many, but as if for one, and to the seed of thee; namely Christ] ¹⁷ now this I say that the law which was four hundred and thirty years after, doth not disannul a covenant ratified by God for Christ, so as to put a stop to the promise.

² and she conceived and bare a son to Abraham in old age at the set time, of which the Lord had spoken to him. ³ And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaak.

¹⁹ God is not like a man to be deceived; Nor like a son of man to be threatened. When he hath spoken, will he not perform? When he shall speak, will he not stand to it?

⁶ And while they were there, the time came that she should be delivered; ⁷ and she brought forth her son, the first born, and swathed him, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the house appropriate to lodging.

¹⁹ since thy servant hath found favour in thy sight and thou hast magnified thy kindness in what thou dost for me to save my life. I cannot escape to the mountains. Peradventure the calamity may overtake me and I shall die.

¹⁴ Whereupon the women said to Noemin, Blessed be the Lord who hath not left thee this day without a kinsman to make thy name famous in Israel. ¹⁵ He shall be to thee a restorer of life, and a nourisher of thine old age. For thy daughter in law, who loved thee, hath brought forth a son. She is better to thee than seven sons. ¹⁶ And Noemin took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became its nurse, ¹⁷ and the neighbours gave it a name, saying, a son is born to Noemin, and called its name Obed. He was the father of Jessai, the father of David.

⁹ I myself gave this expectation; yet thou didst not remember me, saith the Lord. Behold did I not make her who beareth; and her who is barren? Said thy God. ¹⁰ Rejoice Jerusalem! and sing praises therein, all ye who love her! Be exceedingly joyful with her, all ye who mourn for her!

¹⁴ He will indeed be to thee matter of joy and exultation; and many will rejoice at his birth.

²⁵ The Lord hath dealt thus with me in the days in which he looked on me to take away my reproach among men.

¹⁵ Set your hearts on this with respect to each other"to rejoice with them who rejoice, and to weep with them who weep.

²⁶ so that if one member suffereth, all the rest suffer with it; and if one member is honoured, all the rest rejoice with it.

¹² And the child of eight days old shall be circumcised among you. Every male throughout your generations, including the home born servant, and him who is bought with money from any stranger, not of thy seed.

³ And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaak. ⁴ And Abraham circumcised Isaak on the eighth day, as God had commanded him.

³ And on the eighth day she shall circumcise the flesh of his foreskin,

⁸ Then he gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham begat Isaak, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaak begat Jacob; and Jacob, the twelve patriarchs.

⁵ circumcision performed on the eighth day; a descent from Israel; of the tribe of Benjamin; a Hebrew of Hebrews; with respect to the law, a Pharisee;

²⁵ and sent by the ministry of Nathan the prophet, and called his name Jeddedi, For the sake of the Lord.

⁶³ And he, having demanded a table book, wrote, saying, His name is John. At which they were all surprised.

³ Let not acts of kindness and faithfulness forsake thee: but bind them about thy neck

⁸ Now therefore sit down and write these things in a tablet and make a book that they may be for the appointed time; even for the time to come.

² And the Lord answered and said, [J] Write a vision: write it distinctly in a book that the reader may trace these things;

⁶⁰ But his mother interposing, said, No. He shall be called John.

¹⁵ Thou therefore shalt speak to him and commit my words to his mouth. And I will open thy mouth and his mouth and teach you what you shall do. ¹⁶ He shall speak to the people for thee and he shall be thy mouth and thou shalt be to him as the Oracle of God.

⁷ [To my comeliness, thou, Lord, in thy good pleasure hadst added strength] but thou didst turn away thy face, and I was involved in trouble. ⁸ To thee, Lord, I cried and to my God made supplication; ⁹ what profit is there in my blood; by my going down to corruption? Can dust celebrate thy praise; or can it proclaim thy truth? ¹⁰ The Lord heard and compassionated me: the Lord became my helper. ¹¹ Thou didst turn my mourning into joy; thou didst rend in pieces my sackcloth and gird me with gladness, ¹² that my glory might sound thy praise; and that I might not be absorpt in grief. Lord, my God, to thee I will give thanks for evermore.

¹⁵ Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may proclaim thy praise.

¹⁸ With correction, the Lord corrected me: but did not deliver me up to death. ¹⁹ Open for me the gates of righteousness, and I will go in at them and give thanks to the Lord.

¹ And on that day thou wilt say, I bless thee, Lord; because, though thou wast angry with me, thou hast turned away thy wrath and pitied me.

⁹ Then the Lord stretched forth his hand towards me and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, Behold I have put my words in thy mouth.

²⁷ And when I speak to thee, I will open thy mouth and thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord, whoso heareth let him hear; and let him who is disobedient, be disobedient, since they are a rebellious house.

²¹ In that day there shall spring up a horn for the whole house of Israel, and I will give thee an open mouth in the midst of them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

²² Now the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before he arrived, and had opened my mouth. So when he came to me in the morning my mouth was opened and no more shut.

³⁴ And at the end of the days I Nabuchodonosar lifted up mine eyes to heaven, and mine understanding was restored to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and glorified him who liveth forever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion and his kingdom is to endless generations, ³⁵ and all the inhabitants of the earth are reckoned as nothing; and he doth according to his pleasure in the army of heaven and in the habitations of the earth; and there is none who can stay his hand, or say to him, What hast thou done. ³⁶ At this very hour my senses were restored to me and I reassumed the honour of my kingdom; and my form returned to me; and my princes and my grandees sought me; and I was reestablished in my kingdom and greater majesty was added to me. ³⁷ Now therefore I Nabuchodonosar praise and extol and glorify the king of heaven; for all his works are true and his ways are judgments and all them who walk in pride he can abase.

³³ and the demon being expelled, the dumb man spake, and the crowds expressed their amazement, saying, Nothing like this was ever seen in Israel.

³² And they bring to him a man who was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech, and beseech him to lay his hands on him. ³³ Whereupon he taketh him apart from the multitude, and put his fingers in his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue; ³⁴ Then, looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. ³⁵ And immediately his ears were opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spake distinctly. ³⁶ Though he commanded them not to tell any one, yet the more he enjoined them the more abundantly they proclaimed .his miracles. ³⁷ And being struck with inexpressible amazement, said, He hath done all things well, he maketh the deaf hear, and the dumb speak.

⁶ Thereupon the inhabitants of Gabaon sent to Joshua, to the camp of Israel, at Galgala, saying, Slack not thy hands from thy servants. Come up to us with all speed, and help us, and deliver us; for all the kings of the Amorites who inhabit the hilly country are assembled against us.

³⁹ And the angel left her. And in those days Mary set out and travelled with speed to the hill country, to a city of Juda,

¹⁶ And a dread fell upon all; and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is risen up among us, and God hath visited his people.

⁴³ and there was fear on every soul; and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

⁵ Upon hearing these words Ananias fell down and expired. And great fear came upon all who heard these things.

¹⁸ Then one of his servants answered and said, Behold I have seen a son of Jessai the Bethlemite. He is skilled in music, and is a man of understanding and a warrior, graceful in speech, and of a comely appearance, and the Lord is with him.

⁴⁶ the hand of the Lord was upon Elias and having girded up his loins, he ran before Achab to Jezrael.

¹⁷ let thy hand be on the man of thy right hand; on the son of man whom thou hast made strong for thyself:

²¹ My hand will indeed support him. And him mine arm will strengthen.

¹¹ I have hid thine oracles in my heart, that I may not sin against thee.

⁸⁰ And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of the manifestation of him to Israel.

⁴⁰ And the child grew and became strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and there was a divine gracefulness upon him.

⁴⁴ Give diligent attention to these words; for the son of man will soon be delivered up into the hands of men.

²¹ And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.

²⁵ the Lord descended in a cloud, and spoke to him, and took a portion of the spirit which was upon him, and put it on the seventy elders. And soon as the spirit rested on them, they prophesied.

² The Spirit of the Lord hath spoken by me, And his word was upon my tongue.

²⁸ And it shall come to pass after these things that I will pour out a portion of my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; and your old men shall dream dreams; and your young men shall see visions.

⁴¹ And soon as Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb: and Elizabeth was filled with a holy spirit,

²¹ for prophecy was not uttered in former days at the will of man; but the holy men of God spoke by an impulse of the holy spirit.

²⁶ he said, "Ah devoted Chanaan! "To his brethren he will be a domestic servant. Moreover he said, "Blessed be the Lord God of Sem: "And let Chanaan be his domestic servant."

²⁰ And blessed be God the Most High who hath delivered thy enemies into thy hands. And Abram gave him a tenth of all.

¹⁶ Go therefore and assemble the Senate of the children of Israel and say to them, The Lord, the God of our fathers hath appeared to me, even the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob saying, With watchfulness I have observed you and all that hath befallen you in Egypt. ¹⁷ Moreover he said, I will bring you up from the oppression of the Egyptians to the land of the Chananites and the Chettites and the Amorites and the Pherezites, and the Gergasites and the Evites and the Jebusites; to a land flowing with milk and honey,

⁴⁸ And the king said to this effect. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who hath this day set one of my seed on my throne, and my eyes see it.

¹⁰ and blessed the Lord in the presence of the assembly, saying, Blessed art thou Lord God of Israel, our Father, from everlasting to everlasting.

²⁰ Then David said to all the congregation, Bless ye the Lord our God. And all the congregation blessed the Lord the God of their fathers, and with bended knees made a reverence to the Lord and to the king.

³⁸ She coming up at that instant, did, in a responsive strain, give thanks to the Lord; and she spake of him to all those in Jerusalem who were expecting a deliverance.

⁴⁴ and dash thee to the ground, and thy children within thee; and not leave one stone on another; because thou didst not know the time of this thy visitation.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing; with the heavenly things in Christ;

⁷ by whom we have this redemption by his blood; the forgiveness of our sins according to the richness of his grace

¹ My heart was strengthened by the Lord; By my God, my horn was exalted; Over my enemies my mouth was enlarged; I was made glad by thy salvation.

¹⁰ The Lord will make his adversary weak. Holy is the Lord. Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom, Nor the mighty man boast of his power; Nor let the rich man boast of his riches: But let him who boasteth, boast of this; That the Lord understandeth, and knoweth, And that he executeth judgment and justice in the land. The Lord ascended up to heaven and thundered; He will judge the highest on earth: To our kings he giveth power, And he will exalt the horn of his anointed.

²⁶ And now as thou hast spoken let thy name be magnified for ever.

³ He will be my guard, in him I will trust; He is my defence, and the horn of my salvation; My helper and my refuge for safety. From an unrighteous man thou wilt save me.

¹³ but I will not take the whole kingdom, I will give thy son one tribe for David my servant's sake and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen.

² The Lord is my support, my refuge and my deliverer. My God is my helper, in him I will trust: my protector, the horn of my salvation and my defender.

³ I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn to my servant David,

¹⁷ For thou art the glory of their strength; and by thy favour our horn shall be exalted.

²⁰ I have found David my servant; I have anointed him with holy oil. ²¹ My hand will indeed support him. And him mine arm will strengthen. ²² Over him an enemy shall not gain advantage; nor shall a son of wickedness any more afflict him. ²³ For before him I will hew down his enemies: and them who hate him I will put to flight. ²⁴ And my truth and my mercy shall be with him; and by my name his horn shall be exalted. ²⁵ And I will put his hand on the sea; and his right hand on the rivers: ²⁶ and he will invoke me saying, Thou art my father; my God and the support of my salvation; ²⁷ and I will set him as a first born; high above all the kings of the earth. ²⁸ My mercy I will keep for him evermore. And my covenant with him shall be firm. ²⁹ And I will establish his seed forever, and his throne as the days of heaven. ³⁰ If his children forsake my law, and do not walk in my judgments; ³¹ If they profane my statutes; and do not keep my commandments: ³² I will visit their transgressions with a rod; and their iniquities with scourges. ³³ But from him I will not withdraw my mercy; nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. ³⁴ I will not violate my covenant; nor annul what have passed my lips.

¹⁷ I will cause a horn for David to spring up there; I have prepared a lamp for mine anointed. ¹⁸ His enemies I will clothe with shame; but on him my crown shall flourish.

¹ And there shall spring up a shoot from the root of Jessai; even from that root shall spring up a blooming shoot; ² and the spirit of God will rest upon him; a spirit of wisdom and understanding; a spirit of counsel and majesty; a spirit of knowledge and piety: ³ by this spirit he will be filled with the fear of God. He will not judge according to opinion, nor will he reprove according to report; ⁴ but he will administer justice to the lowly, and work conviction in the meek of the earth. And he will smite the earth with the word of his mouth, and with a breath from his lips destroy the wicked. ⁵ His loins will be girded with saving goodness, and his reins clothed with truth. ⁶ And a wolf shall pasture with a lamb; and a leopard shall lie down with a kid; and the calf, and bull and lion shall pasture together, and a little child shall tend them. ⁷ The cow and bear shall feed together; and together their young shall herd; and the lion shall eat chaff like an ox. ⁸ And the sucking child shall lay its hand on the holes of asps and on the bed of young asps. ⁹ And they shall not hurt nor have power to destroy any one on the mountain which is my sanctuary. Because the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of the Lord as abundant water covereth depths of seas; ¹⁰ Blessed the approaching reign of our father David! that coming in the name of the Lord, Hosanna, in the highest!

² which he promised heretofore by his prophets in the Holy Scriptures ³ concerning his son, [him who was of a seed of David with respect to flesh

¹⁶ I Jesus have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the congregations. I am the root and the offspring of David; the bright and the morning star.

¹⁰ A chief shall not fail from Judas. Nor a leader from his loins; Till the things reserved for him shall come; Even He, the expectation of nations.

⁵ Behold the days are coming, saith the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous shoot, who shall reign king and understand and execute judgment and justice on the earth.

²⁴ Seventy weeks are set apart for thy people and for the holy city; for finishing sin offerings, and for sealing up sin offerings; and blotting out iniquities, and making atonement for iniquities; and for bringing in an everlasting righteousness; and for sealing vision and prophet; and for anointing the Holy of Holies. ²⁵ Therefore thou art to know and understand, that from the going forth of a word for returning an answer and for building Jerusalem until an Anointed ruler are seven weeks, and sixty two weeks. They shall indeed return and a street shall be built and a wall, and these times shall be emptied out, ²⁶ and after the sixty two weeks, the Messiah shall be cut off, though there is no crime in him; and he, with the ruler who is coming, will destroy the city and the sanctuary. They shall be destroyed with a deluge, and even to the end of the war determined on in course, with desolations. ²⁷ Now one week shall confirm a covenant for many and in the half of that week my sacrifice and libation shall be taken away. And upon the temple shall be an abomination of the desolations, and at the end of a time, an end shall be put to that desolation.

³⁶ For David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said, "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool."

²⁶ Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? ²⁷ Then beginning with Moses and proceeding through all the prophets, he explained to them, by all those writings, the things concerning himself.

⁴⁴ Then he said to them, This is what I told you while I was yet with you, That all the things written concerning me in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, must needs be accomplished.

²¹ whom the heaven must receive till the time of the consummation of all which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets of old: ²² for Moses indeed said to the fathers, "The Lord your God will raise up for you from among your brethren a prophet like me. To him you must hearken according to all that he shall speak to you; ²³ and whoever the person be who will not hearken to that prophet, he shall be cut off front among the people. ²⁴ All the prophets also from Samuel, even as many of the following ones as have spoken, have likewise foretold these days.

²⁵ And being at variance among themselves they broke up, upon Paul's saying one word, that the holy spirit had spoken well to our fathers by the prophet Esaias,

² which he promised heretofore by his prophets in the Holy Scriptures

⁷ Wherefore as the Holy Spirit saith, "Today since you have heard his voice,

¹² to whom it was revealed that it was not for themselves, but for us, that they dispensed those things which have now been announced to you by them who proclaimed to you the glad tidings with a holy spirit sent from heaven; into which things angels have an earnest desire to look narrowly.

¹⁰ Whereupon I fell down at his feet to worship him. And he saith to me, See thou do not. I am the fellow servant of thee and of thy brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God. For the spirit of this prophecy is the testimony of Jesus.

²⁹ Blessed art thou, Israel! Who is like thee, people saved by the Lord! Thy helper will protect thee, His sword shall be thy boast, Thine enemies shall submit to thee, And thou shalt ride upon their neck.

¹⁰ and saved them from the hand of those who hated them, and delivered them out of an enemy's hand.

⁴⁷ Save us, Lord, our God; and gather us from among the nations; that we may give thanks to thy holy name; that we may triumph in thy praise.

¹ but the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and will still make choice of Israel; and they shall rest in their own land; and the stranger shall be joined to them, and shall be added to the house of Jacob. ² The nations shall take them and bring them to their place; and the house of Jacob shall possess them; when they shall multiplied in their land, for men servants and for maid servants: and they who captivated them shall be captives; and they who domineered over them shall be brought into subjection. ³ And it shall come to pass in that day when the Lord shall give thee rest from thy sorrow and thy grief; from that hard servitude of thine, with which thou hast served them,

²⁴ [J] Thus saith the Lord, who redeemed thee; even He who formed thee from the womb; I am the Lord the Maker of all things; I alone stretched out the heavens and firmly established the earth. ²⁵ Who else can dispel from the heart the signs of belly speakers and divinations? I am he who turneth sages backwards and maketh their counsel foolish; ²⁶ but establisheth the word of his servant, and verifieth the counsel of his messengers; who saith to Jerusalem, "Thou shalt be inhabited;" and to the cities of Idumea, "Ye shall be re builded, and in its deserts vegetation shall spring up:"

⁷ Thy God hath said, "I left thee for a little while; but with great mercy I will compassionate thee: ⁸ in a short wrath I turned away my face from thee; but with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on thee." The Lord who delivered thee hath said, ⁹ "From the flood which was in Noah's time this is my purpose; as I solemnly promised him at that time that I would no more be angry with the earth on thine account, nor in rebuking thee overturn the mountains; ¹⁰ and that thy hills should no more be moved; so my kindness for thee shall not fail, nor shall the covenant of thy peace ever be changed: for he said for thee, Be appeased, Lord." ¹¹ [J] thou afflicted and storm beaten! Art thou not comforted? Behold I am preparing for thee carbuncles for thy building stones, and the sapphire for thy foundations; ¹² and for thy battlements I will lay jasper; and crystal, for thy gates; and for thy circumambient walls, precious stones: ¹³ even thy sons, all instructed of God; and thy children in great prosperity. ¹⁴ And with righteousness thou shalt be rebuilded. Abstain from injustice and thou shalt not be affrighted; and as for terror, it shall not approach thee. ¹⁵ Behold proselytes shall come to thee for my sake; and they shall sojourn with thee and fly to thee. ¹⁶ Behold I have created thee, not like a coppersmith blowing coals and using a tool for the work. But I have created thee, not for destruction. ¹⁷ Perish every weapon formed against thee! I will not prosper it. Though every voice should rise up against thee for judgment, thou shalt overcome them all and in the trial they shall be condemned. There is an inheritance for them who serve the Lord, therefore you are to be just for me, saith the Lord.

⁶ In his days Juda shall be saved and Israel shall dwell securely. And the name which the Lord will give him by the prophets shall be Josedek [Lord of righteousness.]

³⁷ behold I will gather them from every land through which I have in my wrath and in my great indignation dispersed them: and I will bring them back to this place and cause them to live securely.

²⁶ And they shall dwell there securely and shall build houses and plant vineyards: they shall indeed dwell securely when I have executed judgment on all who despised them; on all their neighbours around them; and they shall know that I the Lord am their God and the God of their fathers.

²⁵ and with this David I will make a covenant of peace, and remove the wild beasts entirely out of the land; so that they may dwell in the desert and sleep in the Woods.

²⁸ and they shall no more be a prey to the nations, nor shall the wild beasts of the earth any more devour them, so they shall dwell secure and none shall make them afraid.

⁸ After many days he will be in a state of preparation, and in the last of years he will begin his march, and come into the land which is withdrawn from the sword; the land of them who have been collected from many nations, to the land of Israel, which had been made an entire desert. When he from nations hath begun his march, they will be all dwelling in peace.

⁹ Rejoice exceedingly, O daughter of Sion! Make proclamation, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold thy king is coming for thee. He is righteous and a saviour. He is meek and mounted on an ass, even a young colt. ¹⁰ He will destroy chariots out of Ephraim and horses out of Jerusalem: and the battle bow shall be destroyed. And there shall be a multitude and peace from the nations; and he shall rule over waters to the sea, and over rivers to the ends of the earth.

⁷⁴ that he would grant us, that we, being delivered out of the hands of our enemies, may serve him without fear,

⁸ He who practiseth sin is of the devil, because the devil sinneth from the beginning; for this [purpose] the son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

⁴ "On my part lo! this is my covenant with thee, Thou shalt be the father of a multitude of nations, ⁵ and thy name shall no more be called Abram but thy name, shall be Abraham; because I have made thee the father of many nations: ⁶ And I will increase thee exceedingly, and cause thee to become nations; and kings shall spring from thee: ⁷ And I will establish this my covenant with thee and thy seed after thee, throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be thy God and the God of thy seed after thee. ⁸ And I will give thee and thy seed after thee this land in which thou sojournest; even all the land of Chanaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God." ⁹ Moreover God said to Abraham, "On thy part thou shalt keep this my covenant; thou and thy seed after thee throughout their generations.

⁴² whereupon I will call to remembrance the covenant with Jacob, and the covenant with Isaak, and I will call to remembrance the covenant with Abraham, and remember the land.

⁴⁵ he remembered his covenant and according to the multitude of his mercies;

⁵ He hath given food to them that fear him: he will remember his covenant forever.

⁸ Then I passed by thee and beheld thee and lo! thou wast of a marriageable age. So I spread my skirt over thee and covered thy nakedness; and sware to thee and entered into covenant with thee, saith the Lord.

⁶⁰ when I remember my covenant made with thee in the days of thy youth and reestablish for thee an everlasting covenant;

⁵⁴ He hath supported his servant Israel, remembering [as he spoke to our fathers] mercy ⁵⁵ for Abraham and his seed forever.

²⁵ You are the children of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham "And by thy seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed." ²⁶ It is to you first that God, having raised up his son Jesus, hath sent him, blessing you, when you turn every one from his iniquities.

²⁸ With respect to these glad tidings, they are enemies on your account; but with respect to the choice, they are beloved on account of the fathers.

¹⁵ Brethren [I speak according to the practice of men] as no one disannulleth the covenant of a man, or superaddeth to it when it is ratified;

¹³ For when God made a promise to Abraham, as he had none greater to swear by, he swore by himself, ¹⁴ saying, "Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee." ¹⁵ And so he, having waited with patience, obtained the promise. ¹⁶ For men indeed swear by a greater, and an oath for confirmation being to them an end of strife, ¹⁷ God, willing on this occasion to shew more fully to the heirs of this promise the immutability of his determination, interposed an oath, ¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to deceive, there might be strong consolation for us who have fled to take hold of this proffered hope,

¹⁶ saying, By myself I have sworn, saith the Lord, Because thou hast done this, and for my sake hast not spared thy beloved son; ¹⁷ with blessings I will indeed bless thee; and I will multiply thy seed abundantly as the stars of heaven and as the sand on the sea shore: and thy seed shall inherit the cities of their adversaries; ¹⁸ and by the seed of thee all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because thou hast hearkened to my voice.

⁷ The Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my nativity; who spoke to me, and who sware to me saying, "To thee I will give this land and to thy seed;" he will send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take thence a wife for my son.

³ Sojourn in this land and I will be with thee and bless thee: for to thee and to thy seed I will give all this land. And I will establish my oath which I sware to thy father Abraham

⁸ but because the Lord loved you, therefore in performance of the oath which he swore to your fathers, the Lord led you out with a strong hand, and the Lord redeemed thee from the house of bondage, out of the hand of Pharao king of Egypt.

¹² And it shall come to pass, that if you hearken to these rules, and keep and practise them, the Lord thy God will keep with thee the covenant, and the mercy, which he, with an oath, confirmed to your fathers.

⁹ the covenant which he made with Abraham, and that oath of his to Isaak,

⁵ that I may perform the oath which I sware to your fathers to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as at this day. Thereupon I answered and said, So be it, O Lord.

¹⁶ For men indeed swear by a greater, and an oath for confirmation being to them an end of strife, ¹⁷ God, willing on this occasion to shew more fully to the heirs of this promise the immutability of his determination, interposed an oath,

⁹ No lion shall be there; nor shall any ravenous beast come up thither, nor ever be found there; but in it the redeemed will walk, and they who have been collected for the Lord. ¹⁰ They indeed shall return and come to Sion with joy, and everlasting joy shall crown their head: for on their heads will be praise and rapture; and gladness shall have full possession of them. Pain and sorrow and sighing are fled.

¹⁷ The Lord hath saved Israel with an everlasting salvation. They shall not be put to shame nor confounded any more forever.

¹³ even thy sons, all instructed of God; and thy children in great prosperity. ¹⁴ And with righteousness thou shalt be rebuilded. Abstain from injustice and thou shalt not be affrighted; and as for terror, it shall not approach thee.

²¹ And they shall build houses and dwell therein: and they shall plant vineyards and eat the fruits thereof. ²² They shall not build, and others inhabit: nor shall they plant and others eat: for according to the days of the tree of that life, shall be the days of this my people: for they shall wear out the works of their toils. ²³ My chosen ones shall not labour in vain, nor shall they bring forth children for a curse. Because they are a seed blessed of God, both they and their offspring: ²⁴ therefore it shall come to pass, that before they call I will answer them: and while they are yet speaking I will say, "What is the matter." ²⁵ Then shall the wolves and the lambs feed together: and the lion shall eat straw like the But the serpent shall eat dust as bread. They shall not hurt, nor shall they destroy on my holy mountain, saith the Lord.

²⁵ and with this David I will make a covenant of peace, and remove the wild beasts entirely out of the land; so that they may dwell in the desert and sleep in the Woods. ²⁶ And I will place them around my mountain, and give them the rain the rain of blessing: ²⁷ and the trees of the plain shall yield their fruit; and the earth shall yield its increase; and they shall dwell in their land securely; And know that I am the Lord, when I have broken their yoke: and I will rescue them out of the hand of them who enslaved them, ²⁸ and they shall no more be a prey to the nations, nor shall the wild beasts of the earth any more devour them, so they shall dwell secure and none shall make them afraid.

²⁸ and they shall know that I the Lord am their God, when I manifest myself to them among the nations. ²⁹ And I will no more turn away my face from them, for as much as I have poured out my wrath on the house of Israel, saith the Lord, Lord.

⁸ And I will station for my house a guard not to be passed nor repassed. And the plunderer shall no more come against them; for now I have seen with mine own eyes.

⁷¹ a deliverance from our enemies, and out of the hand of all who hate us

²² But being now set free from sin and become servants of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and in the end, everlasting life.

¹⁵ For you have not received a spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received a spirit of adoption, by which we cry, Abba, Father.

⁷ For God hath not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, and love, and a sound mind.

¹⁵ and deliver from bondage them who were all their lives liable to the fear of death.

¹⁴ how much more will the' blood of the Christ, who by an eternal spirit hath offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works that you may serve the living God.

¹⁰ Be not terrified at what thou art about to suffer. Behold the devil will soon cast some of you into prison, that you may be tried; and ye will have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.

² that you may fear the Lord your God. You shall keep all his statutes, and his commandments, which I this day command you, both thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, all the days of thy life, that you may live many days.

⁴⁴ and gave them the countries of nations, and they inherited the labours of peoples; ⁴⁵ that they might keep his rules of rectitude, and that they might diligently seek his law.

³³ For this, saith the Lord, is my covenant which I will make with the house of Israel; after those days, saith the Lord, I will adapt my laws to their understanding and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God and they shall be my people. ³⁴ And they shall no more teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for all will know me from the greatest to the least of them: for I will be merciful to their iniquities and no more remember their sins.

³⁹ And I will give them another way and another heart that I may be always feared and may be for good to them and their children after them. ⁴⁰ And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, which I will not turn away from them; and I will put my fear in their heart, that they may not apostatise from me;

²⁴ When I take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all the countries, and bring you into your own land; ²⁵ then I will sprinkle upon you pure water, and you shall be cleansed from all your impurities and from all your idols; and when I have cleansed you, ²⁶ I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you: I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and give you a heart of flesh: ²⁷ And I will put my spirit in you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and to keep my judgments and practise them.

⁴ as he chose us in him before the5 foundation of the world, that we might be holy and blameless before him in love;

¹⁰ For we are his workmanship, fitted by Christ Jesus for good works, for which God had before prepared us that we might walk therein.

²⁴ and to put on the new man, which in a conformity to God is created in righteousness and the holiness of truth.

¹ Wherefore, as to what remaineth, we beseech you brethren, and exhort you, by the Lord Jesus, that as you have received from us how you ought to walk and please God, you would abound more and more.

⁷ For God hath not called us for uncleanness, but to sanctification.

¹³ Now we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath, from the beginning, chosen you for salvation by a sanctification of spirit and a belief of the truth

⁹ who hath saved us, and called us with a holy invitation, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose, and the favour which was granted to us in Christ Jesus, before the times composed of ages,

¹⁴ as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves in conformity to your former desires during your ignorance; ¹⁵ but as he who hath called you is holy, be ye also holy in the whole course of your life; ¹⁶ for it is written, "Be ye holy, because I am holy."

⁴ through which he hath freely made us very great and precious promises, that by them you may become partakers of a divine nature when you have fled from the corruption which is in the world by lust; ⁵ therefore, having on your part used all diligence for the very same purpose, add to your faith fortitude; and to fortitude, knowledge; ⁶ and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, perseverance; and to perseverance, piety; ⁷ and to piety, brotherly affection; and to brotherly affection, universal love; ⁸ for these being in you, and abounding, dispose you to be neither idle nor unfruitful for the acknowledging of our Lord Jesus Christ:

⁵ Man will say, "Sion is my mother;" and, "In it such a man was born." "The Most High himself founded it"

⁵ Now behold I will send you Elias the Thesbite before that great and awful day of the Lord cometh;

³ For this is the person spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, "A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord: make the roads for him straight."

⁹ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yes I tell you, and something more than a prophet; ¹⁰ for this is he of whom it is written, "Behold I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee."

⁵ Upon which Herod would have put him to death, but he was afraid of the people, because they looked upon him as a prophet.

²⁶ and if we say, Of men, we fear the people; for they all hold John as a prophet.

² As it is written in the prophets, "Behold I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare the way before thee." ³ "A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord; make the roads for him straight,"

³² But if we say, From men; they feared the people; for all held John to be really a prophet.

¹⁶ And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ He will go before in his presence, with the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and prepare disobedient persons, by a deep sense of righteous things, to be for the Lord a well disposed people.

³² He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

⁴ As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, "A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord: make the roads for him straight. ⁵ Let every valley be filled up; and every mountain and hill levelled; and let the crooked be made a straight road, and the rough ways, smooth. ⁶ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God."

²⁷ This is he, of whom it is written, "Behold I send my messenger before thee, who shall prepare thy way for thee." ²⁸ For I say to you, Among those who are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the baptist, but the least in the kingdom of God is a greater than he.

²³ He said, I am "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord," as the prophet Esaias said.

²⁷ He is the person who is coming after me; who is preferred to me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.

²⁴ before whose appearance John proclaimed a baptism of reformation to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, I am not he whom you suppose me to be; but behold he is coming after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to untie.

³⁴ And they shall no more teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for all will know me from the greatest to the least of them: for I will be merciful to their iniquities and no more remember their sins.

³ "A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord; make the roads for him straight," ⁴ John came baptizing in the wilderness, and proclaiming a baptism of reformation, for a remission of sins.

³ and he went into all the country along the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of reformation for a forgiveness of sins.

⁶ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God."

⁴⁷ For what reason? I tell thee. Her sins which are many, are forgiven her; therefore her love is great. But he to whom little is forgiven, hath little love. ⁴⁸ Then he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven. ⁴⁹ Upon this, they who were at table with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins? ⁵⁰ Thereupon he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee, Go in peace.

⁷ This man came as a witness to bear witness concerning this light, that by means of him all might believe. ⁸ He was not the light, but was to bear witness concerning the light. ⁹ The light [the true light which enlighteneth every man] coming into the world

¹⁵ Of him John testifieth when he cried, saying, "This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is preferred before me, for he was before me." ¹⁶ And of his fulness we have all received even grace for grace. ¹⁷ Because the law was given by Moses grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

²⁹ The next day John seeth Jesus coming towards him, and saith, Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!

²⁷ In reply to which, John said, A man can receive nothing from heaven, unless it be given him. ²⁸ You yourselves are witnesses for me that I said, "I am not the Christ; but that I am sent before him. ²⁹ He is the bridegroom, who hath the bride. But the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth exceedingly on the account of the bridegroom's voice. This joy of mine therefore, is complete. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease. ³¹ The one coming from above, is above all. He who is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth. The one coming from heaven is above all, ³² and what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth, yet none receiveth his testimony. ³³ He who hath received his testimony, hath set his seal to this, That God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God; for God giveth him not the spirit by measure.

³⁸ Thereupon Peter said to them, Repent and let every one of you be baptized to the remission of sins for the name of Jesus Christ, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be blotted out, that seasons of refreshment may come from the presence of the Lord;

³¹ even him, a chief leader and a Saviour, God hath exalted at his right hand to give repentance to Israel and a remission of sins.

⁴³ To him all the prophets bear witness, that every one who believeth in him, shall receive remission of sins by his name.

³⁸ Be it known therefore to you, Men, brethren, that by this person remission of sins is proclaimed to you; ³⁹ and that by him every one who believeth is acquitted from all those sins, from which you Could not be acquitted by the law of Moses.

⁴ Then Paul said, John indeed baptized the baptism of reformation, telling the people that they should believe in one coming after him, namely in Jesus The Christ.

²⁵ whom God heretofore exhibited as a mercy seat by faith in his blood, that, on account of the remission of past sins, during the forbearance of God,

⁶ As David also saith in respect to the happiness of the man to whose account God placeth righteousness without works, ⁷ "Happy they whose iniquities are forgiven; And whose sins are covered: ⁸ Happy the man to whose account the Lord will not charge sin."

¹⁷ I can point to him, though he is not now; I hail him happy tho" he is not near. A star will arise out of Jacob; There shall rise up a man out of Israel, And he will smite the princes of Moab, And plunder all the sons of Seth:

⁶ Lord, remember thy compassion and thy tender mercies; for they are from everlasting.

¹ And there shall spring up a shoot from the root of Jessai; even from that root shall spring up a blooming shoot;

⁷ [c] I recollected the loving kindness of the Lord; the mercies of the Lord in all those things which he retributeth for us. The Lord is a good judge to the house of Israel. He dealeth with us according to his tender mercy and according to the abundance of his saving goodness,

¹⁵ Return from heaven and take a view from the house of thy sanctuary and thy glory. Where is thy zeal and thy majesty? Where the abundance of thy loving kindness and tender affections, that thou hast withdrawn thyself from us?

⁸ Hearken now, Jesus the high priest, thou and they near thee who sit in presence, since they are men who typify Wonderful things: since lo! I am bringing my servant Anatole, [the Day-spring;]

¹² and say to him, Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Behold a man! his name is Anatole [Day-spring] underneath him he shall spring up. And he shall build the house of the Lord.

² But to you who fear my name the son of righteousness will arise with healing in his wings; and you shall go forth and leap for joy like young bullocks loosed from yokes.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but have everlasting life.

⁴ then God, who is rich in mercy, on the account of the great love with which he loved us, ⁵ even when we were dead in those trespasses, did bring us to life with the Christ, [by grace you are saved]

¹⁴ therefore it is said, "Awake thou who sleepest and arise from the dead and the Christ will shine upon thee.

⁸ For God be my witness how tenderly I love you all with the affection of Jesus Christ;

¹ if therefore there be any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any participation of spirit, if any compassion and tender mercies,

¹² put on therefore as chosen of God, holy and beloved, bowels of tender mercies, gentleness, humility, meekness, long suffering,

¹⁹ Therefore we have a more complete confirmation of the prophetic word, to which you do well in giving attention, as to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawn, and the bringer of light rise in your hearts;

¹⁷ Whosoever hath worldly substance, and seeth his brother in want, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

⁹ By this the love of God was manifested among us, because God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we may live by him. ¹⁰ In this is the love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be an atonement for our sins.

⁵ but let darkness and the shadow of death cover it: upon it let there come a thick darkness. May the day be execrated!

²² to a land dark and gloomy; to a land of everlasting darkness; where there is no light; no seeing the life of mortals.

⁴ For though I walk amidst the shades of death: I will fear no ills, because thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff have been my comfort.

⁸ The Lord is gracious and righteous: therefore he will instruct sinners in the way: ⁹ he will guide the meek in judgment: he will teach the meek his ways. ¹⁰ All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth; to them who seek his covenant and his testimonies.

¹² What man soever habitually feareth the Lord; him He will instruct in the way he hath chosen;

¹⁹ Because thou hast humbled us in the place of affliction, and covered us with the shadow of death;

¹⁰ Mercy and truth have met each other; righteousness and peace have mutually embraced. ¹¹ Truth hath sprung up out of the earth, and righteousness hath looked down from heaven. ¹² For the Lord will exercise benignity, and our land shall yield her increase. ¹³ Righteousness shall go before him, and he will imprint his footsteps for a path.

¹⁰ As for them who sat in darkness and the shadow of death; bound with affliction and irons;

¹⁴ and brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death; and burst their chains asunder.

¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace.

²⁰ I walk in the ways of righteousness; and am conversant in the paths of judgment:

² ye people who walk in darkness, behold! a great light! and ye who dwell in a region, the shade of death, on you a light shall shine.

⁷ to open the eyes of the blind; to lead out from chains them who are bound, and out of prison, them who are sitting in darkness.

¹⁶ and lead the blind in a way which they know not, and cause them to walk in paths which they have not known. For them I will make the darkness light, and the crooked ways a straight road. These things 1 will do, and I will not forsake them:

¹⁷ Thus saith the Lord who hath redeemed thee, the Holy One of Israel, I am thy God. I pointed out to thee, how to find the way in which thou shouldst walk.

²² "There is no peace, " saith the Lord, "for the wicked."

⁹ saying to them who are in bonds, Go forth; and to them who are in darkness, "Come into light." In all the highways they shall be fed, and there shall be pasture for them in all the paths.

¹⁹ peace upon peace to them near and to them far off. So the Lord said, I will heal them. ²⁰ But the wicked shall be tossed like waves and shall not be able to rest. "There is no peace, "said God, "to the wicked."

⁸ and the path of peace they do not know, nor is there any judgment in their ways; for the paths which they travel are crooked and peace they do not know.

¹ Be enlightened: be enlightened, Jerusalem! for thy light is come; and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. ² Behold darkness will cover the earth and thick darkness the nations: but upon thee the Lord will shine and his glory over thee will be conspicuous. ³ And kings will walk by thy light: and nations by thy splendour.

⁶ and did not say, Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of the land of Egypt; who led us through the wilderness; through a boundless and untrodden land; through a land without water and without fruit; through a land which no man traversed, and where no man had a fixed abode.

¹⁶ Thus saith the Lord, Stand in the highways and take a view and inquire for the ancient paths of the Lord, and see which is the good way and walk in it, and you shall find a purification for your souls: but they said, "We will not go."

¹⁶ the people who sat in darkness saw a great light; and to them who sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up."

²⁸ Come to me all ye who labour and are heavily burdened and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take upon you my yoke and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

³² a light to illuminate the nations; the glory of thy people Israel.

⁹ The light [the true light which enlighteneth every man] coming into the world

¹² Then Jesus spake to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who floweth me will not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

⁵ While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

⁴⁶ I being light am come into the world, that whoever believeth in me may not remain in darkness.

¹⁸ to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of satan to God, that they may receive a remission of sins and an inheritance among them who are sanctified by the belief in me.

¹⁷ And the way of peace they did not know.

⁸ For you were formerly darkness, but being now a light in the Lord, walk as children of light

⁴ But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that this day should break upon you at unawares as a thief. ⁵ You are all children of light and children of the day. We are not of night, nor of darkness.

⁵ This indeed is the message which we have heard from him, and announce to you, That God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. ⁶ If we say that we have communion with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practise truth. ⁷ But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have communion with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanseth us from all sin.

¹⁹ And Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, so that not one of his words fell to the ground. ²⁰ And all Israel, from. Dan to Bersabee, knew that Samuel was a faithful prophet of the Lord.

¹ In those days cometh John the baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, and saying,

⁷ And as they were going away, Jesus began this discourse to the people concerning John, What did you go out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

⁵² And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men.

³¹ As for me, I did not know him; but to the end that he might be made manifest to Israel; for this purpose I came baptizing in water.
