¹ Soon one of those days when he was teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming the glad tidings, the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders, came up to him and accosted him, ² saying, Tell us, by what authority thou dost these things? Or who hath given thee this authority? ³ In answer to which, he said to them, Let me also ask you one question, and do you tell me. ⁴ Was the baptism of John from heaven, or of men? ⁵ Upon this they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say from heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him? ⁶ And if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us; for they are all firmly persuaded that John was a prophet. ⁷ So they answered that they did not know whence it was. ⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. ⁹ Then he addressed to the people this parable. A certain man planted a vineyard and let it to husbandmen, and went abroad for many seasons. ¹⁰ And at one season he sent a servant to the husbandmen that they might give him some of the product of the vineyard. But the husbandmen beat him and sent him away empty. ¹¹ Again he sent another servant; and him also they beat, and abused shamefully, and sent away empty. ¹² Again he sent a third, and this one they wounded and cast out. ¹³ Then the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son, the Beloved. Perhaps they will reverence him, when they see him. ¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be our own. ¹⁵ So having, cast him out of the vineyard they slew him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He will come and destroy those husbandmen and give the vineyard to others. Upon hearing this, they said, God forbid. ¹⁷ But he looking earnestly at them, said, "What then is the meaning of this passage of scripture, The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner! ¹⁸ Whosoever falleth on this stone will be bruised; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. ¹⁹ Upon this the chief priests and the Scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, [but they were afraid of the people,] for they knew that he had spoken this parable with a view to them. ²⁰ Therefore, having watched him diligently, they sent to him spies who should feign themselves to be righteous men, that they might lay hold of some word of his, in order to deliver him up to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor. ²¹ So they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou speakest and teachest uprightly, and that thou art not a respecter of persons, but teachest the way of God with truth. ²² Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar, or is it not? ²³ But he, knowing their craftiness, said to them, Why are you trying me? ²⁴ Shew me a deniar. Whose image and inscription hath it? When they in reply, said, Caesar's; ²⁵ then he said to them, Render then to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. ²⁶ So they were not able to take advantage of his decision before the people. Therefore, having expressed admiration at his answer, they held their peace. ²⁷ Then some of the Sadducees, who deny a future state, came and asked him, ²⁸ saying, Teacher, Moses hath written for us, If a man's brother, having a wife, die; when he dieth childless, his brother must take his wife and raise up a seed for his brother, ²⁹ Now there were seven brothers. And the first, having taken a wife, died childless. ³⁰ Then the second took the wife, and he died childless: ³¹ then the third took her, and so all the seven, and died without issue. ³² And last of all the woman also died. ³³ In the future state, therefore, whose wife of them is she, as she hath been married to all the seven? ³⁴ In reply to this, Jesus said to them, The children of this world marry and are given in marriage; ³⁵ but they who shall be accounted worthy to obtain that state, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage, ³⁶ For they can die no more. For angel-like they are indeed children of God, being children of the resurrection. ³⁷ Now that the dead are raised up, even Moses hath plainly shewn; as at the bush he stileth the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. ³⁸ For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living. For to him they are all alive. ³⁹ Upon this, some of the scribes addressing him, said, Teacher, thou hast spoken well. ⁴⁰ And after that they did not presume to ask him another question. ⁴¹ Then he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is the son of David, ⁴² when David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand ⁴³ until I make thine enemies thy footstool, ⁴⁴ David therefore calleth him Lord, how then is he his son? ⁴⁵ Then in the hearing of all the people he said to his discipies, ⁴⁶ Beware of the Scribes, who are fond of walking in robes, and love salutations in places of public resort, and the first seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost places at entertainments; ⁴⁷ who devour the families of widows, and for a disguise make long prayers. They shall receive a severer sentence of judgment.

¹ Now with regard to the sons of Aaron in the line of Nadab and of Abiud, and of Eleazar and of Ithamar. ² As Nadab and Abiud died in the presence of their father and had no sons; and . Eleazar and Ithamar had officiated as priests; ³ David classed Sadok at the head of the sons of Eleazar, and Achimelech at the head of the sons of Ithamar, according to the review of them according to their service, according to the houses of their families. ⁴ And as the Eleazarites were found to be more numerous for chiefs of mighty men than the sons of Ithamar, therefore he distributed them; for the sons of Eleazar sixteen chiefs for houses of families, and for the sons of Ithamar chiefs for eight houses of families. ⁵ These he distributed by lot, one with the other. Because there were chiefs of the holies, and chiefs of the Lord, among the sons of Eleazar and among the sons of Ithamar, ⁶ therefore in the presence of the king and the chiefs, Samaias son of Nathaniel, the muster master of the Levites, wrote down Sadok the priest and Achimelech son of Abiathar, and the chiefs of the families of the priests and the Levites, a chief of a house of families alternately, one for Eleazar and one for Ithamar, ⁷ and the first lot came out for Joarim; the second for Jedia; ⁸ the third for Charib; the fourth for Seorim; ⁹ the fifth for Melchias; the sixth for Meiamin; ¹⁰ the seventh for Kos; the eighth for Abia; ¹¹ the ninth for Jesus; the tenth for Sechenias; ¹² the eleventh for Eliabi; the twelfth for Jakim; ¹³ the thirteenth for Oppha; the fourteenth for Jesbaal; ¹⁴ the fifteenth for Belga; the sixteenth for Emmer; ¹⁵ the seventeenth for Chesin; the eighteenth for Aphese; ¹⁶ the nineteenth for Phetaia; the twentieth for Ezekel; ¹⁷ the twenty first for Achim; the twenty second for Gamul; ¹⁸ the twenty third for Adallai; the twenty fourth for Maasai. ¹⁹ This was the review of them according to their service, to go into the house of the Lord according to the rule prescribed for them, under the inspection of Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel commanded Moses. ²⁰ And for the rest of the Levites; for the Ambramites, Sobael; for the sons of Sobael, Jedia; ²¹ for the Rabiates, the chief. ²² For the Isaarites Salomoth, for the sons of Salomoth, Jath; ²³ the sons of Ekdiu; Amadia the second; Jaziel the third; Jekmoam the fourth. ²⁴ For the Ozielites, Micha; for the sons of Micha, Samer; ²⁵ the brother of Micha, Isia; the sons of Isia, Sacharia; ²⁶ the Merarites Mooli and Mousi; ²⁷ the sons of Ozia, to whom belonged the title Merarite; his sons Isoam; and Sakckur, and Abai; ²⁸ for Mooli, Eleazar and Ithamar, now Eleazar died and had no sons, ²⁹ for him Kis; the sons of Kis, Jerameel; ³⁰ the sons of Mousi, Mooli and Eder and Jerimoth, these sons of the Levites according to the houses of their families; ³¹ they also drew lots as their brethren the sons of Aaron did, in the presence of the king and of Sadok and Achimelech, the senior chiefs of the families both of the priests and the Levites submitting to the lot equally with their younger brethren.

²³ And when he was come to the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority dost thou these things? And, Who gave thee this authority? ²⁴ In reply to which, Jesus saith to them, Let me also ask you a question, which if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ Whence was the baptism of John? From heaven, or of men? Upon this they reasoned among themselves, saying, if we say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him: ²⁶ and if we say, Of men, we fear the people; for they all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ So in answer to Jesus, they said, We cannot tell. Thereupon Jesus said, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

⁵⁵ At that instant Jesus was saying to the multitudes, Are you come out as against a rubber with swords and clubs, to take me? Day after day I sat before you teaching in the temple, and you did not lay hold on me.

²⁷ Then they come again to Jerusalem; and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders, come to him, ²⁸ and say to him, By what authority doest thou these things? And, Who hath given thee authority that thou shouldst do such things? ²⁹ And Jesus, answering, said to them, I also will ask you one question. Answer me; and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. ³⁰ Was the baptism of John from heaven or of men? Answer me. ³¹ Upon this they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did you not believe him? ³² But if we say, From men; they feared the people; for all held John to be really a prophet. ³³ So they in reply; say to Jesus, We cannot tell. There upon Jesus answering, saith to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

¹ Immediately after this he travelled through cities and villages, publishing and proclaiming the glad tidings of the reign of God, accompanied by the twelve,

⁴⁷ Now while he was daily in the temple teaching, the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the chiefs of the people were contriving his destruction; ⁴⁸ but could not find the means of effecting it. For all the people were bent upon hearing him.

²⁰ Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world, I taught always in the synagogues and in the temple, to which the Jews always resort. And I have spoken nothing in secret.

¹ Now while they were speaking to the people; the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees,

¹² And having stirred up the people and the elders and the Scribes, they came upon him and seized him, and brought him to the Sanhedrim,

¹⁴ To which he replied, Who made thee a ruler or a judge over us? Dost thou mean to kill me, as thou didst the Egyptian yesterday? Thereupon Moses was alarmed and said, Is the thing become so public?

³⁵ So they brought it to Jesus. And having thrown their mantles on the colt, they set Jesus thereon. ³⁶ And as he went along, the people spread their mantles on the way. ³⁷ And as he was drawing near, just at the descent of the mount of olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to express their joy in loud acclamations, praising God for all the miracles which they had seen, ³⁸ saying, Blessed be the king who is coming in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! ³⁹ Upon this, some of the Pharisees who were in the crowd, said to him, Teacher, rebuke these disciples of thine. ⁴⁰ In reply to which, he said to them, I tell you, If these keep silence, those stones would exclaim.

⁴⁵ Then he went into the temple and began driving out thence them who were selling and buying in it, ⁴⁶ saying to them, It is written," My house is a house of prayer:" but you have made it a den of robbers.

¹⁸ Hereupon the Jews addressed him, and said, What sign dost thou shew us to justify thy doing these things?

²² For the Father judgeth no one, but hath committed the whole act of judging to his Son, ²³ that all may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, doth not honour the Father, who sent him. ²⁴ Verily, verily I say to you, He who heareth my word, and believeth on him who sent me, hath an everlasting life, and doth not incur condemnation, but hath passed from death to that life. ²⁵ Verily, verily I say to you, a time is coming, nay is now come, when the dead will hearken to the voice of the son of God, and they who hearken shall live. ²⁶ For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath granted to the son to have life also in himself, ²⁷ and hath also given him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.

⁷ and having set them in the midst, they asked by what power, or by what name, have you done this? ⁸ Then Peter being filled with a holy spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders of Israel, ⁹ if we are this day examined for a good deed done to an infirm man, by what means he hath been healed, ¹⁰ be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom ye crucified; whom God raised from the dead by him this man standeth before you, perfectly cured.

²⁷ He who was doing his neighbour the injury thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a chief and a judge over us?

³⁵ This Moses whom they rejected, saying, Who made thee a chief and a judge? this very person God sent as a chief and a deliverer by the hand of an angel who appeared to him in the bush ³⁶ This person brought them out by performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red sea, and in the wilderness, forty years. ³⁷ This is the very Moses who said to the children of Israel, The Lord your God will raise up for you, from among your brethren, a prophet like me, to him you are to hearken. ³⁸ This is the person who was in the congregation in the wilderness, with the angel who spake to him at mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received living oracles to give to us; ³⁹ to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but rejected him, when with their hearts they turned towards Egypt,

⁵¹ O stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears Ye do always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do ye.

² Why do thy disciples transgress the doctrine of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. ³ In reply to which he said to them, Why do you transgress the commandment of God, from a regard to your doctrines?

⁶⁸ And if I ask you a question, you will not answer me, nor dismiss me.

⁶ Let your conversation be always with courteousness, seasoned with salt, with a knowledge how you ought to answer every one.

²⁵ Thou wilt be driven from among men; and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; and they will feed thee with grass like an ox; and thou shalt lodge in the dew of heaven; and seven seasons shall revolve over thee, till thou be made sensible that the Most High ruleth over the kingdom of men and can give it to whom he will. ²⁶ But inasmuch as they said, Let the stump of the roots of the tree remain, thy kingdom shall remain for thee when thou art made sensible of the heavenly authority.

⁷ And as they were going away, Jesus began this discourse to the people concerning John, What did you go out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what went ye out to see? A man clothed with soft raiment? Behold they, who wear delicate apparel, frequent the palaces of kings. ⁹ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yes I tell you, and something more than a prophet; ¹⁰ for this is he of whom it is written, "Behold I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee." ¹¹ Verily I say to you, among them who are born of women, there hath not arisen a greater than John the baptist: but the least in the kingdom of heaven is a greater than he. ¹² Now ever since the days of John the baptist, the kingdom of the heavens is invaded and invaders are forcibly taking possession of it. ¹³ For till the appearance of John, all the prophets and the law were the public instructors. ¹⁴ Indeed, if you will bear to be told it, he is Elias who was to come. ¹⁵ Whoever hath ears to hear let him hear. ¹⁶ Now to what shall I compare this generation? It is like boys in the market place who call to their playfellows, ¹⁷ saying, "We have played to you on the pipe, but you have not danced; We have sung to you songs of woe, and you have not lamented." ¹⁸ For John came, abstaining from meat and drink, and they say he hath a demon. ¹⁹ The son of man came eating and drinking; and they say, Behold a gluttonous man and a wine drinker; a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her children.

¹¹ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Elias indeed cometh first and is to finish and begin all anew. ¹² Now I say to you, Elias is already come and they did not know him, but have treated him as they pleased. In the same manner also the son of man will soon suffer by them.

Upon this they reasoned among themselves, saying, if we say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him: ²⁶ and if we say, Of men, we fear the people; for they all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ So in answer to Jesus, they said, We cannot tell. Thereupon Jesus said, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁸ But what think you? A man had two sons. And coming to the first, he said, Son, go work today in my vineyard.

³⁰ And he in reply said, I will not. But afterwards he repented and went. And coming to the second, he ordered him in like manner; and he in reply said, I will, sir; but did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say to him, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily I say to you, The publicans and the harlots lead the way for you to the kingdom of God. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him. And though you saw this, you did not afterwards repent and believe him.

²⁸ For I say to you, Among those who are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the baptist, but the least in the kingdom of God is a greater than he. ²⁹ All the people indeed, even the publicans, when they heard, justified God by submitting to the baptism of John; ³⁰ but the Pharisees and the teachers of the law made null, with regard to themselves, the counsel of God, by not submitting to be baptized by him; ³¹ therefore the Lord said, To what shall I compare the men of this generation, and to what are they like? ³² They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and say, We have played on the pipe for you, and you have not danced: we have sung for you songs of woe, and you have not wept. ³³ For John the baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, He hath a demon. ³⁴ The son of man came eating and drinking; and you say, Behold a gluttonous man and a wine bibber; a friend of publicans and sinners. ³⁵ But wisdom is justified by all her children.

¹⁸ I will rise and go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight,

⁶ There was a man sent from God: his name was John.

¹⁹ Now this is the testimony of John: when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou? ²⁰ He frankly declared and did not deny, but frankly declared, I am not the Christ. ²¹ Then they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not: art thou the prophet And he answered, No. ²² Then they said to him, Who art thou? That we may give an answer to them who sent us: What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said, I am "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord," as the prophet Esaias said. ²⁴ Now they who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ Then they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them saying, I baptize in water; but there is one in the midst of you, whom you know not. ²⁷ He is the person who is coming after me; who is preferred to me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie. ²⁸ These things passed at Bethabara on the bank of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

¹⁵ Of him John testifieth when he cried, saying, "This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is preferred before me, for he was before me." ¹⁶ And of his fulness we have all received even grace for grace. ¹⁷ Because the law was given by Moses grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ No one hath ever seen God. This only begotten son, who is in the bosom of the father, even he hath made him known.

³⁰ this is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who hath been before me; for he existed before me.

³⁴ Now I have Seen and testified that this is The Son Of God.

²⁶ and they went to John, and said to him, Rabbi, he who was with thee on the bank of the Jordan, to whom thou didst bear testimony, behold he is baptizing, and all are flocking to him.

³⁶ He who believeth in the son, hath an everlasting life; but he who disbelieveth the son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God will abide on him.

³³ You sent to John, and he gave a testimony to the truth. ³⁴ But as for me, I do not receive human testimony, but mention this that you may be saved. ³⁵ He was the lighted and shining lamp; and for a while you were disposed to exult with joy at his light.

²⁵ And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, I am not he whom you suppose me to be; but behold he is coming after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to untie.

⁹ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yes I tell you, and something more than a prophet;

⁵ Upon which Herod would have put him to death, but he was afraid of the people, because they looked upon him as a prophet.

²⁶ and if we say, Of men, we fear the people; for they all hold John as a prophet.

⁴⁶ but when they sought to seize him, they were afraid of the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet.

⁵ And they said, Not at the festival, that there may not be a tumult among the people.

¹² Upon this they sought to lay hold of him, but were afraid of the people. For they knew that he had spoken the parable against them. So they left him and went away,

⁷⁶ Now as for thee, child, thou shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shall go before in the presence of the Lord, to prepare his ways;

²⁶ But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and something more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he, of whom it is written, "Behold I send my messenger before thee, who shall prepare thy way for thee." ²⁸ For I say to you, Among those who are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the baptist, but the least in the kingdom of God is a greater than he. ²⁹ All the people indeed, even the publicans, when they heard, justified God by submitting to the baptism of John;

⁴¹ And many resorted to him and said, John indeed wrought no miracle; but all that John said respecting this man is true.

²⁶ Then the captain went with the under officers and brought them, but without violence; for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

⁹ And he said, "Go and say to this people; hearing you shall hear, though you may not understand: and seeing you shall see, though you may not perceive: ¹⁰ for the heart of this people is stupefied; and their ears are dull of hearing; and they have shut their eyes, that for a while they may not see with their eyes; and hear with their ears; and understand with their hearts; and return that I may heal them.

¹¹ Thy hand, Lord, was lifted high; but they did not know it; but when they know they will be ashamed. Zeal will seize an uninstructed people; even now a fire devoureth the adversaries.

⁹ [p] Be sunk in dejection and stand astonished; be drunk and reel, not with wine nor strong drink; ¹⁰ for the Lord hath drenched you with a spirit of stupefaction, and will close up the eyes of them and of their prophets and their rulers. As for your seers of hidden things, ¹¹ all these prophesies will be to you like the words of a book which is sealed: which when they give to a man skilled in letters, saying, Read this: He will say, I cannot read it, for it is sealed. ¹² And should the book be put in the hands of an illiterate man, and they say to him, Bead that, he will say, I do not know letters.

¹⁴ therefore, behold, I will proceed to the removal of this people and I will remove them; and destroy the wisdom of the wise, and darken the understanding of the prudent."

²⁸ For of the nations behold there is none, and of the idols none giveth warning. And should I ask them, Whence are you? They could not make me any answer.

¹⁹ [J] Who indeed is blind but my servants? And deaf, but those who rule over them? Even the servants of God are become blind. ²⁰ You have seen again and again but have not regarded: your ears have been opened, but you did not hear.

¹⁸ They had not sense to think; for they were so involved in darkness that they could not see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts:

⁷ The stork in the heaven knoweth her season; so doth the dove and the swallow of the field; the ostriches observed the time of their coming; but my people do not know the judgments of the Lord. ⁸ How can you say, "We are wise and the law of the Lord is with us." In vain was it made; the scribes had a lying pen. ⁹ Are the wise ashamed? They are indeed dismayed and taken. Because they rejected the law of the Lord; therefore be their wisdom what it may,

¹⁵ Then the Lord said to me, Take thee yet the pastoral utensils of an unskilful shepherd;

¹⁷ ye feeders of vanities who have forsaken the sheep. There is a sword against his arms, and against his right eye. Shall his arm be quite withered, and his right eye utterly put out?

⁷ Because the lips of a priest were to keep knowledge therefore law was to be sought from his mouth; since he is a messenger of the Lord Almighty: ⁸ but as for you, you have turned aside out of the way and weakened many by law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord Almighty, ⁹ therefore I have made you contemptible and outcasts among all the nations, because you did not keep my ways, but in law have had respect to persons.

¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness more than light, because their works were evil. ²⁰ For whosoever doeth evil hateth the light, and doth not come to the light, that his deeds may not be detected.

³⁹ Then Jesus said, I am come into this world for judgment that they who do not see may see, and that they who see may become blind;

¹⁰ and with all the deceit of this unrighteousness among them who perish. Because they did not embrace the love of the truth that they might be saved; ¹¹ for this cause therefore God will send them the energy of delusion, that they may believe this falsehood; ¹² that all may be condemned who have not believed the truth, but have taken pleasure in unrighteousness.

⁸ Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these men withstand the truth, having their minds corrupted, being, with respect to this belief, such as cannot stand the test ⁹ But they shall not advance much further; for the folly of these shall be exposed to the world, as that of those was.

³ knowing this first, that in the last day scoffers will come, walking after their own desires,

¹² Who changeth the counsels of the crafty, so that their hands can perform no enterprise. ¹³ Who entangleth the wise in their wisdom, and defeateth the counsel of the artful.

⁴ Answer not a fool conformably to his folly; let thou become like him. ⁵ But answer a fool according to his folly; that he may not think himself wise.

¹⁴ Let them alone. They are blind leaders of blind. Now if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into a ditch.

⁴ An evil and adulterous generation demand a sign, but no sign shall be given them, save that of the prophet Jonas. So leaving them he departed.

²⁷ So in answer to Jesus, they said, We cannot tell. Thereupon Jesus said, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

³³ So they in reply; say to Jesus, We cannot tell. There upon Jesus answering, saith to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

¹⁵ So I took from among you men of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, and appointed them to be leaders over you; captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens; and promulgators of the law for your judges. ¹⁶ And I gave a charge to your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger who is with him. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not respect a person in judgment. Against the low and the high thou shalt pass sentence, and not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's. And if the matter be too hard for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it. ¹⁸ And when I had given you in charge, at that time, all the things which you were to do,

¹⁸ Thou shalt appoint for thyself judges, and promulgators of the law, in the cities which the Lord thy God giveth thee, in every tribe. And they shall administer just judgment to the people.

⁸ And if any cause which requireth judicial decision; an action of murder, an action of appeal, a case of leprosy, an action of plaint and denial; any causes which require decision in any of your cities, be too difficult for thee, thou shalt arise, and go up to the place which the Lord thy God hath chosen, ⁹ and there come to the priests, the Levites, or to the judge, who 10 ever he may be in those days, and they shall inquire, and declare to thee the sentence of judgment, ¹⁰ and thou shalt act according to what they declare to thee from the place which the Lord thy God hath chosen: and thou shalt be careful to do according to what is expounded to thee for law. ¹¹ According to the law, and according to the sentence of judgment, which they tell thee, thou shalt do. Thou shalt not deviate from what ¹² they tell thee, either to the right, or to the left. And if any man act presumptuously, so as not to hearken to the priest who hath stood to minister to the name of the Lord thy God; or to the judge who may be in those days; that man shall be put to death. So thou shalt remove the evil person from among Israel, ¹³ and all the people, when they hear, will be struck with awe, and no more act presumptuously. ¹⁴ And when thou art come to the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and hast taken possession of it, and dwelt therein, if thou shouldst say, I will set a chief over me, as the other nations around me do; ¹⁵ thou shalt surely set, as chief over thee, him whom the Lord thy God shall chuse. Thou shalt appoint one of thy brethren chief over thee. Thou shalt not be at liberty to set a stranger over thee, because he is not thy brother.

⁸ Thou has brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out nations and planted it. ⁹ Thou didst prepare the way before it; and plant its roots and the land was filled: ¹⁰ and its shade obscured mountains: and its branchy shoots, the cedars of God. ¹¹ It extended its branches quite to the sea; and its spreading boughs quite to the river. ¹² Why hast thou broken down its hedge; that all who pass by the way, may pluck it? ¹³ The boar from the forest hath laid it waste; and a savage beast hath devoured it. ¹⁴ God of hosts, return we beseech thee; look down from heaven and see and visit this vine:

¹¹ Solomon had a vineyard at Beelamon, he let this vineyard of his to tenants, a man is to give him a thousand pieces of silver for its fruit. ¹² My vineyard which is before me shall continue to be mine. Solomon shall have the thousand pieces of silver, and they who take care of its fruits, two hundred.

¹ Let me sing for the Beloved, a song of my Beloved to His vineyard. The beloved had a vineyard on a mountain in a rich soil, ² and I hedged it around and trenched it; and planted it with the vine of Sorek; and in the midst of it built a tower, and hewed out therein a wine lake; and waited for its producing grapes, and it produced poisonous berries. ³ Now therefore, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Juda, judge between me and my vineyard. ⁴ What more could I do for my vineyard that I have not done for it? Because I expected that it would produce grapes, and it hath produced poisonous berries; ⁵ now therefore I will tell you, what I purpose to do with my vineyard; I take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be exposed to plunder; and I will demolish its wall, and it shall be for a common walk; ⁶ and I will abandon my vineyard that it may neither be pruned nor digged; and brambles shall overrun it as a waste; and I will give a charge to the clouds not to shed rain upon it. ⁷ For the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts is the house of Israel; and the men of Juda his beloved plant. I waited for their executing justice, but they committed injustice, and promoted not righteousness, but an outcry.

²¹ I indeed planted thee an entirely good and fruitful vine: how art thou, degenerate vine, turned to bitterness?

³³ Hear another parable. There was a certain landlord who planted a vineyard and hedged it around, and dug therein a wine lake, and built a tower, and let it to tenants and went to a distant country. ³⁴ And when the fruit season approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to receive the fruits of it. ³⁵ But the tenants seizing his servants, beat one and killed another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants in greater number than the first, and they treated them in the same manner. ³⁷ At last he sent to them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come let us kill him and keep possession of his inheritance. ³⁹ So, seizing him, they turned him out of the vineyard and slew him. ⁴⁰ Now when the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to these tenants? ⁴¹ They say to him, "Wretches! he will put them to a wretched death: and his vineyard he will let to others; who will render him the fruits in their seasons." ⁴² Jesus saith to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner. This [salvation] was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes." ⁴³ Therefore I say to you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a nation producing the fruits thereof. ⁴⁴ And he who falleth on that stone will be bruised, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. ⁴⁵ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees, when they heard his parables, knew that he spake of them: ⁴⁶ but when they sought to seize him, they were afraid of the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet.

¹⁴ For he is like a man who, intending to travel, called his servants and committed to them his effects,

¹ Then he addressed them in parables, saying, A man planted a vineyard, and hedged it about, and dug a wine lake, and built a tower, and let it to tenants, and went to a distant country. ² And at the vintage season he sent a servant to the tenants, that he might receive from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. ³ But they, having seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty. ⁴ Again he sent to them another servant; and him they attacked with stones, and wounded on the head, and sent back with disgrace. ⁵ Again he sent another, whom they killed; and many others, some of whom they beat, and some they killed. ⁶ Therefore, at last, having an only son, his beloved, he sent him also to them, saying, They will reverence mv son. ⁷ But the tenants said among themselves, This is the heir. Come; let us kill him; and the inheritance will be our own. ⁸ So having seized him, they killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. ⁹ What therefore will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy these tenants, and give the vineyard to others. ¹⁰ Have you never read this portion of scripture, "The stone which the builders rejected, was the very one for the head of the corner. ¹¹ This [salvation] was from the Lord, and is wonderful in our eyes." ¹² Upon this they sought to lay hold of him, but were afraid of the people. For they knew that he had spoken the parable against them. So they left him and went away,

¹² therefore he said, A certain person of noble birth was going to a distant country, to receive for himself regal power, and return.

¹ I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine dresser. ² Every branch in me which beareth not fruit, he loppeth off; and every branch which beareth fruit he cleaneth to make it more fruitful. ³ Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken to you. ⁴ Abide in me, and I [will abide] in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abide in the vine; so neither can you unless you continue in me. ⁵ I am the vine; you are the branches. He who continueth in me and I in him he it is who beareth much fruit. Because, separated from me, you can bear nothing: ⁶ if any one continueth not in me he is thrown away as the branch is when it is withered. Such indeed are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned. ⁷ If you continue in me, and my words continue in you, ask what you will and it will be done for you: ⁸ by this my Father is glorified. That you may bear much fruit, you must be my disciples.

⁶ I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. ⁷ So that neither the planter nor the waterer is any thing; it is God only who giveth growth. ⁸ Now he who planteth and he who watereth are all one; and each shall receive his peculiar reward according to his peculiar labour. ⁹ For we are fellow labourers belonging to God; you are God's field; you are his building.

⁸ the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel, and he said to them, Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel. It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt. I brought you out of a house of your bondage, ⁹ and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all those who are afflicting you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you this their land, ¹⁰ and said to you, I the Lord am your God. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But you have not hearkened to my voice.

²⁴ Thereupon Sedekias son of Chanaan went near and smote Michaias on the cheek, and said, What sort of a spirit of the Lord is that which hath spoken by thee?

¹³ And though the Lord testified to Israel and to Juda by the ministry of all his prophets; of every seer, saying, Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes and all my law which I enjoined on your fathers, and which I sent them by the ministry of my servants the prophets;

¹⁰ Upon this Asa was enraged at the prophet, and committed him to prison. Because this gave offence, Asa proceeded to outrage against the people at the same time.

¹⁹ When he had sent prophets to them to turn them to the Lord, and they would not hearken; when he had testified against them and they would not obey; ²⁰ then the Spirit of God came upon Azarias the priest, the son of Jodae, and he stood above the people and said, Thus saith the Lord, Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord? You cannot prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, therefore he will forsake you. ²¹ Upon this they fell upon him and stoned him by the command of the king, in the court of the house of the Lord.

¹⁵ And the Lord the God of their fathers had sent to them by the ministry of his prophets, rising early, and sending his messengers, because he compassionated his people and his sanctuary. ¹⁶ But they continued to deride his messengers, and to despise his words, and insult his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord ascended against his people; until there was no remedy.

²⁶ and turned and apostatised from thee, and cast thy law behind their backs: Nay, they slew thy prophets who testified against them to turn them to thee; and committed great provocations.

³⁰ and thou hadst borne with them many years, and testified against them by thy Spirit; by the ministry of thy prophets; and they did not give ear, though thou didst deliver them into the hands of the people of the land,

³ And he will be like the tree planted by the streams of water, which will yield its fruit in due season, and its fruit shall not fall untimely. In all that he doth he shall be prospered.

³⁰ In vain have I smitten your children, you did not receive instruction: a sword devoured your prophets, like a ravening lion; and you were not terrified.

²⁴ and did not say in their heart, let us now fear the Lord our God, who giveth us the former and the latter rain, according to the time of completing the appointed harvest. [p] Though they have reserved these for us,

² smote him and committed him to the prison which was in the upper story of the gate to the house of the Lord.

³ [J] From the thirteenth year of Josias son of Amos king of Juda even to this day, for three and twenty years I have spoken to you rising early and speaking: ⁴ and I have sent to you my servants the prophets; rising early and sending them, though you have not hearkened nor inclined your ears; ⁵ saying, Turn ye every one from his evil way, and from your wicked pursuits and you shall dwell in this land, which I gave to you and your fathers from age to age. ⁶ Go not after strange gods to serve them, and worship them, that you may not provoke me by the works of your hands to bring evils upon you. ⁷ But you hearkened not to me.

² Thus saith the Lord, Stand in the court of the house of the Lord and thou shalt solemnly pronounce to all the Jews and to all who come to worship in the house of the Lord all the words which I have commanded thee to prophesy to them; keep not back a word. ³ Perhaps they may hearken and turn every one from his evil way, that I may refrain from all the evils which I am resolving to do to them, because of their wicked pursuits. ⁴ And thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord, Unless you hearken to me so as to walk by the ordinances which I have set before you; ⁵ and hearken to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I send to you, whom I, rising early, have sent to you, though you have not hearkened to them; ⁶ I will make this house like Selo; and this city I will make a curse for all the nations of the whole earth.

²⁰ Now there was a man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, namely Ourias son of Samaias of Kariathiarim; and he prophesied against this land according to all the words of Jeremias. ²¹ And when king Joakim and all the chiefs heard all his words, and sought to kill him and Ourias heard it, he fled to Egypt. ²² And the king sent men to Egypt, ²³ who fetched him out thence and brought him to the king; and he slew him with the sword and threw him into the common grave yard. ²⁴ But the hand of Achikam son of Saphan was with Jeremias that they should not deliver him up into the hands of the people, nor kill him.

²⁶ "The Lord hath made thee priest in the room of Jodae the priest, to be a ruler in the house of the Lord, over every man who prophesieth, and over every man who divineth, that thou mayst commit him to prison, and confine him in a dungeon." ²⁷ Now why have you reviled Jeremias of Anathoth who prophesied to you?

¹⁵ Though I have sent to you my servants the prophets; saying, Turn ye, every one from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after strange gods to serve them, and you shall dwell in the land which I gave to you and your fathers; yet you have not inclined your ears nor hearkened.

¹⁵ And the chiefs were enraged at Jeremias and smote him and committed him to the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that a prison. ¹⁶ And when Jeremias had gone into the lowest apartment, even into the Chereth, and had been there many days, Sedekias sent for him.

⁴ "they said to the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put out of the way; for he weakeneth the hands of the warriors who are left in the city and the hands of all the people by making such speeches to them. For this man prophesieth not peace to the people, but only evils. ⁵ And the king said, Behold he is in your hands. For the king could not withstand them. ⁶ So they threw him into the dungeon of Melchias the king's son which was in the court of the prison. And when they had lowered him down into the dungeon, there was no water in the dungeon, but there was mire; and he was in the mire.

⁴ Though I sent to you my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Do not commit this abominable thing which I hate; ⁵ yet they hearkened not to me, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness so as not to burn incense to strange gods.

⁴ What shall I do for thee, Ephraim? What shall I do for thee, Juda? As for your goodness, it was like a morning cloud; like the transient dew of the morning: ⁵ for this cause I mowed down your prophets, I slew them with the word of my mouth, and my judgment shall go forth as light; ⁶ for I desire mercy rather than sacrifice, and an acknowledgment of God rather than whole burnt offerings.

³ therefore thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Turn to me, saith the Lord of Hosts and4 I will turn to you saith the Lord of Hosts. ⁴ And be not like your fathers to whom the former prophets called, saying, "Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Turn from your evil ways and from your wicked devices, " but they hearkened not, nor gave attention to listen to me, saith the Lord. ⁵ As for your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, will they live forever? ⁶ But receive ye my words and my statutes; all that I, by my spirit, give in charge to my servants the prophets, who reached your fathers, when they addressed them and said, As the Lord Almighty determined to deal with us according to our ways, and according to our devices, so hath he dealt with us."

⁹ Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Execute just judgment and shew mercy and compassion one to another; ¹⁰ and oppress not the widow, nor the orphan, nor the stranger, nor the poor; and let none treasure up in his heart for evil an injury done by his brother; ¹¹ but they refused to attend and turned back contemptuously; and stopped their ears that they might not hear; ¹² and made their heart disobedient that they might not hearken to my law; therefore [according to the words which the Lord Almighty by his spirit sent by the ministry of the former prophets] there was great wrath from the Lord Almighty; ¹³ that it might come to pass as he said, "As they hearkened not, so they shall cry and I will not listen, saith the Lord Almighty,

⁴⁷ Alas for you; because you build the monuments of the prophets, and your fathers slew them. ⁴⁸ You therefore bear testimony, and approve the works of your fathers. Because they slew them, you, therefore, build their monuments; ⁴⁹ on this account indeed said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill, and others they will persecute, ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets, which hath been shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation.

³⁴ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! How often would I have gathered thy children, as a hen doth her brood under her wings; and ye would not.

¹⁶ It was not you who chose me; but it was I who chose you, and placed you that you may go forth bearing fruit, and that your fruit may continue, that the Father may give you whatever you ask of him in my name.

⁴ So you also, my brethren, are become dead to the law by means of the body of the Christ, that you may be for another, who is raised from the dead, that we may bring forth fruit to God.

¹ Israel was a vine with beautiful branches: the fruit thereof was abundant. In proportion to the abundance of his fruit he multiplied altars: in proportion to the good things of his land he erected pillars.

³⁰ and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers we would not have been their accomplices in the blood of the prophets. ³¹ So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of them who killed the prophets. ³² As for you then, fill up the measure of your fathers. ³³ Serpents! brood of vipers! how can you escape the punishment of hell? ³⁴ For this, behold I am about to send you prophets, wise men and Scribes: and some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth; from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say to you, All these things will come upon this generation. ³⁷ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! how often have I desired to gather thy children even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings; but you would not!

⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? Indeed they have slain them who prophesied concerning the coming of that Righteous one, of whom you have now become the betrayers and murderers:

² Though we indeed had suffered before, and had been treated injuriously, as you know, at Philippi; we had the courage, by the help of our God, to declare to you the glad tidings of God with much earnestness.

³⁶ and others received the trial of mockings, and scourgings, besides bonds and imprisonments. ³⁷ They were stoned; they were sawn asunder; they were tempted; they were slain with the sword; they wandered about in sheep skins, in goats skins, destitute, afflicted, tormented,

⁴ What more could I do for my vineyard that I have not done for it? Because I expected that it would produce grapes, and it hath produced poisonous berries;

³ Perhaps the house of Juda will hear all the evils which I purpose to do to them, that they may turn from their evil way and that I may be merciful to their iniquities and their sins.

⁷ Perhaps they may find favour in the sight of the Lord and turn from their evil way, for great is the wrath and the anger of the Lord which he hath denounced against this people.

⁴ What shall I do for thee, Ephraim? What shall I do for thee, Juda? As for your goodness, it was like a morning cloud; like the transient dew of the morning:

⁸ [J] What shall I do with thee, Ephraim? Shall I shield thee, Israel? What must I do with thee? Shall I make thee as Adama and as Seboim? My heart relenteth for him. My compassion is moved.

¹⁷ and lo! a voice from heaven said,"This is my son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased."

⁵ While he was yet speaking, behold! a bright cloud overshadowed them; and lo! from the cloud, a voice, saying, This is my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye him.

³⁵ And there came a voice from the cloud, saying, This is my son, the Beloved; hearken to him.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him may not perish, but have everlasting life. ¹⁷ For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world may be saved by him.

³⁵ The father loveth the son, and hath given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He who believeth in the son, hath an everlasting life; but he who disbelieveth the son, shall not see life; but the wrath of God will abide on him.

³ for as it was out of the power of the law to do this, inasmuch as it was weak through the flesh, God having sent his own son in a likeness of sinful flesh, and to be a sin offering, hath condemned this sin in the flesh,

⁴ but when the fulness of time was come, God sent forth his son, born of a woman; born under law

⁹ By this the love of God was manifested among us, because God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we may live by him. ¹⁰ In this is the love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be an atonement for our sins. ¹¹ Beloved, if God so loved us; we surely ought to love one another. ¹² No one hath ever seen God. If we love one another, God abideth in us, and his love is perfected in us. ¹³ By this we know that we abide in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his spirit; ¹⁴ and we have seen, and do testify, that the Father hath sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. ¹⁵ Whosoever will confess that Jesus is the son of God, God abideth in him, and he in God.

¹⁸ Now when they saw him at a great distance before he came near them, they wickedly thought of killing him ¹⁹ and said one to another, Behold the dreamer is coming. ²⁰ Now therefore come let us kill him and throw him into one of these pits, and we will say a savage beast hath devoured him. And let us see what will become of his dreams.

¹ Why did nations rage? And tribes meditate vain things? ² The kings of the earth combined; and the chiefs assembled together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, [saying] ³ "Let us break their bands asunder and throw off from us their yoke." ⁴ He who dwelleth in heaven will laugh them to scorn; the Lord will treat them with derision. ⁵ Then will he speak to them in his wrath and trouble them with his sore displeasure. ⁶ But as for me, by him I am appointed king on Sion his holy mountain.

⁸ "Ask of me, and I will give thee nations for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

²⁷ and I will set him as a first born; high above all the kings of the earth.

² saying, Where is he who is born to be king of the Jews? For we have seen his star at its rise, and are come to pay him homage. ³ Upon hearing this, Herod the king was alarmed and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And having assembled all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them, where the Christ should be born. ⁵ And they told him. At Bethlehem of Judea. For thus it is written by the prophet, ⁶ "And thou Bethlehem in the land of Judea art by no means the least among the leaders of Juda; for out of thee shall come a leader, who shall tend my people Israel" ⁷ Then Herod, having privately called the magians, got exact information from them concerning the time of the star's appearing; ⁸ and sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go and make exact inquiry about the child. And when you have found him bring me word, that I also may go and pay him homage. ⁹ So in obedience to the king they departed; and lo! the star which they had seen at his rise moved on before them, till it came and stood over the place where the child was. ¹⁰ When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly: ¹¹ and having entered the house they found the child with Mary his mother. Whereupon, prostrating themselves, they did him homage. Then opening their treasures they presented him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. ¹² And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went to their own country by another way. ¹³ And when they were gone, behold an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there till I order thee; for Herod will seek the child to destroy him. ¹⁴ Accordingly he arose and took the child and his mother by night and went to Egypt, ¹⁵ where he continued till the death of Herod, so that there was a fulfilment of what the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son." ¹⁶ When Herod saw that he was treated with contempt by the magians, he was highly incensed, and he sent and slew all the male children in Bethlehem and all the territory belonging thereto, from those who had entered the second year and under, according to the time, of which he had. got exact information from the magians.

⁷ Whereupon they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have not brought loaves with us.

²⁵ Whence was the baptism of John? From heaven, or of men? Upon this they reasoned among themselves, saying, if we say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him:

²¹ So when the governor, addressing them, said, Which of the two do you desire me to release to you? They said, Barabbas. ²² Pilate saith to them, What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? They all say to him, Let him be crucified. ²³ Thereupon the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they with more vehemence cried, Let him be crucified. ²⁴ When Pilate saw that he could not in the least prevail, but that a tumult rather was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am clear from the blood of this innocent person. Look ye to it. ²⁵ Upon which all the people, answering, said, His blood be upon us and upon our children.

⁴⁷ Now while he was daily in the temple teaching, the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the chiefs of the people were contriving his destruction;

⁵ Upon this they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say from heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him?

¹⁹ Upon this the chief priests and the Scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, [but they were afraid of the people,] for they knew that he had spoken this parable with a view to them.

² while the chief priests and the Scribes were contriving how they might kill him, [for they were afraid of the people]

⁴⁷ Whereupon the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled the Sanhedrim, and said, What are we doing? Because this man doth many miracles, ⁴⁸ if we let him go on thus, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both this place and this nation of ours. ⁴⁹ And one of them, namely, Caiaphas, being chief priest that year, said to them, Are you totally ignorant, ⁵⁰ and do you not consider that it is better for us that one man die for the people than that the whole nation should perish.

²³ Him, being surrendered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken; and by the hands of wicked men have crucified and slain.

¹⁵ You indeed killed him who is the conductor to life, whom God hath raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.

¹⁷ and if children, then heirs; heirs indeed of God, and joint heirs with Christ if we suffer with him so that with him we may also be glorified.

² hath in these last days spoken to us by a son whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also he made the ages;

³⁷ At last he sent to them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come let us kill him and keep possession of his inheritance. ³⁹ So, seizing him, they turned him out of the vineyard and slew him. ⁴⁰ Now when the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to these tenants?

⁶ Therefore, at last, having an only son, his beloved, he sent him also to them, saying, They will reverence mv son. ⁷ But the tenants said among themselves, This is the heir. Come; let us kill him; and the inheritance will be our own. ⁸ So having seized him, they killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. ⁹ What therefore will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy these tenants, and give the vineyard to others.

¹² And therefore Jesus, that he might by his own blood sanctify the people, suffered without the gate.

³⁶ Behold we are now slaves, and as for this land which thou gavest to our fathers to eat the fruits thereof, and the good things thereof, behold we are slaves in it; ³⁷ and its abundant fruits belong to those kings whom for our sins thou hast set over us, and who have dominion over our bodies, and who can do with our cattle what they please, so that we are in great affliction.

⁸ "Ask of me, and I will give thee nations for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. ⁹ Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron. Thou shalt break them to pieces like a potter's vessel."

⁸ Let thine enemies feel thy hand: and thy right hand find out all that hate thee. ⁹ Thou wilt make them like an oven of fire, at the time of thy presence. The Lord with his wrath will confound them, and a fire shall devour them. ¹⁰ Thou wilt destroy their fruit from the earth, and their seed from among the sons of men.

⁴¹ They say to him, "Wretches! he will put them to a wretched death: and his vineyard he will let to others; who will render him the fruits in their seasons."

⁷ When the king heard this he was incensed, and sent forth his armies, and destroyed the murderers, and burned their city.

²⁷ And as for those enemies of mine who would not have me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence.

⁴⁶ Whereupon Paul and Barnabas with great freedom of speech said, It was necessary that the word of God should be first spoken to you. But since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of this everlasting life, behold we turn to the Gentiles

²² The stone which the builders rejected, was the very one for the head of the corner.

¹⁶ Therefore thus saith the Sovereign Lord; behold I lay for the foundation of Sion a stone of inestimable worth; a chosen, precious corner stone for the foundations of it, and he who believeth shall not be ashamed.

⁹ since with regard to that stone which I have set before Jesus, upon that one stone there are seven eyes; behold I am digging a pit saith the Lord Almighty, and I will feel all the iniquity of this land in one day.

⁴² Jesus saith to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner. This [salvation] was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes."

⁵ Then looking round on them with indignation, being grieved for the blindness of their mind, he saith to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. Accordingly he stretched it out, and his hand was restored whole as the other.

²³ Thereupon Jesus, looking round, saith to his disciples, How difficult it is for them who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

¹⁰ Have you never read this portion of scripture, "The stone which the builders rejected, was the very one for the head of the corner.

⁴¹ And as he drew near he viewed the city and wept over it,

³⁷ For I say to you, this portion of scripture" And he was ranked with malefactors," must yet be accomplished in me. For the things concerning me are coming to a close.

⁶¹ Upon which the Lord, turning about, looked upon Peter. And Peter recollected the word of the Lord, how he said to him, Before cock crowing thou wilt three times deny me.

⁴⁴ Then he said to them, This is what I told you while I was yet with you, That all the things written concerning me in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, must needs be accomplished.

²⁵ But by this is fulfilled the word which is written in their law, They hated me without cause.

¹¹ This is the stone that was rejected by you the builders, which was for the head of the corner.

⁷ this honour then being for you who believe: but to the disbelieving, "the stone, which the builders rejected that which was for the head of the corner," ⁸ is indeed a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence. They disbelieving the word stumble at the thing for which they were laid:

¹⁴ for if thou hast put trust in him he will be to thee a sanctuary, and you shall not run against a stumbling stone, nor as under a falling rock. But as for the houses of Jacob, they are in a trap, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem are in a pit: ¹⁵ for this cause many among them shall be weak and fall and be trodden down and men will safely approach and take them.

³⁴ With wonder thou didst view it, till from a mountain there was rent without hands a stone, which smote the image on the feet, which were of iron and potters clay, and at last broke them to pieces. ³⁵ Then were broken to pieces at once, the clay, the iron, the brass, the silver, the gold. And they became like the dust of a threshing floor in summer: and a great wind swept them away, and there was no place found for them. And the stone which smote the image became a great mountain and filled all the earth.

⁴⁴ And in the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and this kingdom of his shall not be left to another people. It shall break in pieces, and blow away all those kingdoms and shall itself stand forever. ⁴⁵ As thou sawest that without hands there was cut from a mountain a stone, which broke in pieces the clay, the iron, the brass, the silver, the gold; the God who is great, hath made known to the king what must come to pass hereafter. The dream indeed is true and the interpretation thereof is faithful.

³ and in that day I will make Jerusalem a stone to be trampled by all the nations: every one who trampleth her will make her his mocking stock. When all the nations of the earth shall be gathered against her,

³⁴ And when the fruit season approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to receive the fruits of it.

⁴⁴ And he who falleth on that stone will be bruised, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the nations that they may be saved; thus, filling up the measure of their sins continually: but the wrath is at last coming upon them,]

³ At that time the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders of the people, were convened to the court of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, ⁴ and were consulting how they might take Jesus by surprise and kill him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be our own.

² he sent to Thekoe, and brought thence a wise woman, and said to her, Feign thyself, I pray thee, to be a mourner, and put on mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be like a woman mourning for one who hath been long dead:

² and he said to his wife Ano, Arise, go and inquire of God concerning the child whether he will recover of his sickness. Now there was a man at Selom whose name was Achia. He was sixty years of age and the word of the Lord was with him. So when Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise ³ and take in thy hand for the man of God some loaves and some cakes for his children, and grapes and a pot of honey, ⁴ the woman arose and took in her hand loaves and two sweet cakes and grapes and a pot of honey for Achia. Now the man was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see. ⁵ So she departed from Sarira and proceeded on in her journey. And when she came to the city, to Achia the Selonite, Achia said to his servant, Go and meet Ano the wife of Jeroboam and say to her, Come in and make no stop; for thus saith the Lord, I am sending bitter things against thee. ⁶ And when Ano came in to the man of God, Achia said to her, Why hast thou brought me bread and grapes and sweet cakes and a pot of honey?

³² The sinner watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to kill him; ³³ but the Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor suffer him to condemn him when he is judged.

¹² But they who seek my life pressed forward: and they who seek my ruin spake vanities. All the day long they studied deceits.

³ Say to God, How awful are thy works! For the greatness of thy power, let thine enemies submit to thee.

¹⁵ The enemies of the Lord should have submitted to him; and their time would have been forever:

²⁰ The lawless one hath failed, and the haughty one is destroyed, and these are utterly cut off who maliciously commit iniquity, ²¹ and who by reasoning cause men to err. But as for all them who reprove in the gates they will indeed lay a stumbling block, because of their having turned aside the righteous one for the unrighteous,

¹⁹ As for me I like a lamb led to slaughter did not know. Against me they had formed a wicked design, saying, "Come, let us put poison in his bread, and cut him off from the land of the living; and let his name be mentioned no more."

¹⁸ Upon this they said, "Come let us settle on account with Jeremias. Because law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor a word from the prophet, Come and that we may smite him with the tongue, let us hear all his words."

¹⁰ Because I heard the whisper of many collected from all around saying, "Join in conspiracy and let us all conspire against him; ye men who are his friends watch his thoughts; if he can be deceived, we shall then prevail over him and take our revenge on him."

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went out and consulted how they might ensnare him by a discourse. ¹⁶ So they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, We know that thou art true and teachest the way of God truly, and carest for no one. For thou respectest not the persons of men. ¹⁷ Tell us therefore what thou thinkest. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not? ¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me? ¹⁹ Shew me the tribute money. So they brought him a deniar, ²⁰ then he saith to them, Whose image and inscription is this? ²¹ They say to him, Caesar's. Then he saith to them, Render then to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. ²² Upon hearing this they were struck with surprise, and left him and went away.

² So, having bound him, they led him away and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate the governor.

² and they watched him to see whether he would heal on the sabbath, that they might accuse him.

¹³ and send to him some of the Pharisees, and the Herodians, to entrap him with a speech. ¹⁴ And when they came, they say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man. For thou respectest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God with truth. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar? Or is it not? ¹⁵ Should we give? Or should we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, Why do ye try me? Bring me a deniar, that I may see it. ¹⁶ So they brought him one. Then he saith to them, Whose image and inscription is this? And they said, Caesar"s. ¹⁷ Then Jesus, answering, said to them, Render to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. And they expressed admiration at him.

⁵⁴ laying snares for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him;

²⁶ So they were not able to take advantage of his decision before the people. Therefore, having expressed admiration at his answer, they held their peace.

²⁸ From Caiaphas they led Jesus away to the judgment hall of the Roman governor. Now it was early in the morning and they themselves did not go into the hall that they might not be polluted, but that they might eat the passover. ²⁹ Pilate therefore came out to them and said, What accusation do you bring against this man? ³⁰ They in reply, said to him, If he were not a malefactor we would not have delivered him over to thee. ³¹ Then Pilate said to them; Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law. Upon this the Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death, ³² so that the word was fulfilled which Jesus had spoken, signifying by what kind of death he was to die.

³ Indeed, with insatiable covetousness, they will, with smooth words, make merchandize of you. But the judgment prepared of old for them is not idle, nor is their destruction slumbering.

⁷ Now therefore let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Keep watch and do your duty; for with the Lord our God there is no injustice, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.

¹⁹ Who hath no respect for the person of an honourable man; nor knoweth how to honour nobles by respecting their persons."

² They spoke vanities one to another: their lips are deceitful, they spoke with a double heart:

²¹ they were scattered by the indignation of his countenance. When his heart was near, his words were smoother than oil. Now they are daggers.

² came to Jeremias the prophet and said to him, Have compassion on us, we beseech thee and pray to the Lord thy God for this remnant; for we are left only few of many as thine eyes see. ³ Now let the Lord thy God point out to us the way which we should go and what we are to do.

¹⁶ So they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, We know that thou art true and teachest the way of God truly, and carest for no one. For thou respectest not the persons of men.

⁴⁹ So coming directly up to Jesus, he said, Hail, Rabbi! and kissed him. ⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, Companion! for what purpose art thou come? Then others, advancing, laid hands on Jesus, and held him.

¹⁴ And when they came, they say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man. For thou respectest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God with truth. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar? Or is it not?

² when this man came to Jesus by night, and said to him, Rabbi, We know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do the miracles which thou dost, unless God be with him,

³⁴ Then Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is not a respecter of persons; ³⁵ but in every nation he who feareth him and worketh righteousness is acceptable to him.

¹⁷ For we do not like the many, adulterate the word of God, but as men of sincerity, but as men of God, in the presence of God in Christ we speak.

¹⁰ For do I now conciliate the favour of men rather than of God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

⁶ And with regard to those in high repute [what they were formerly doth not concern me: God accepteth not man's person; for these men of repute added nothing to me;

⁴ but as we had been approved by God to be entrusted with the glad tidings, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who trieth our hearts. ⁵ For never did we at any time use flattering words, as you know; nor a pretext for covetousness, God is witness;

¹⁵ thou shalt surely set, as chief over thee, him whom the Lord thy God shall chuse. Thou shalt appoint one of thy brethren chief over thee. Thou shalt not be at liberty to set a stranger over thee, because he is not thy brother.

¹³ Now therefore be it known to the king, that if this city be rebuilt, and the walls therefore completed, no tribute will be paid to thee, nor will they do homage. Now as this is injurious to kings,

¹⁹ and I gave orders and we have examined and found, that this city from time immemorial hath set itself up against kings and that there are seditions in it, and asylums for slaves; ²⁰ and that there have been mighty kings in Jerusalem, who have exercised dominion over the whole country beyond the river; and that great tribute, and tolls have been paid to them. ²¹ Now therefore give orders to stop those men; for that city must not be built any more. ²² See that you merit praise in executing this, lest peradventure the desolation be fitted up to the prejudice of kings.

⁷ From the days of our fathers we are in great transgression, even to this day. And for our inquities, we and our kings and our children, have been delivered into the hand of the kings of the nations, to the sword and to captivity, and to spoiling, and to confusion of face, as at this day.

⁴ There were others who said, We have borrowed money to pay the king's tribute, and pledged our fields and our vineyards and our houses,

³⁷ and its abundant fruits belong to those kings whom for our sins thou hast set over us, and who have dominion over our bodies, and who can do with our cattle what they please, so that we are in great affliction.

²⁵ He saith, Yes. And when he came into the house, before he spake, Jesus said to him, What thinkest thou Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth receive assessments? Of their own sons or of others?

¹⁷ Tell us therefore what thou thinkest. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not? ¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me? ¹⁹ Shew me the tribute money. So they brought him a deniar, ²⁰ then he saith to them, Whose image and inscription is this? ²¹ They say to him, Caesar's. Then he saith to them, Render then to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's.

³⁷ After him started up Judas, the Galilean, in the days of the enrolment, and drew a great many people after him. He also perished, and all that put confidence in him were dispersed.

⁹ [J] where your father"s tried me; they proved me, though they had seen my works.

¹ And the Pharisees and the Sadducees having come thither with a view to try him, desired that he would show them a sign from heaven.

¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me?

²² Thereupon Jesus, knowing their surmises, addressed them, saying, Why reason ye in your hearts?

⁸ Now he knew their thoughts. Therefore when he had said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise and stand in the midst; and he had risen, and was standing there;

¹⁶ and others, to try him, demanded of him a sign from heaven; ¹⁷ he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and house after house falleth.

⁵³ Now while he was saying these things to them, the Scribes and the Pharisees took occasion to urge him vehemently, and provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying snares for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him;

²⁰ Therefore, having watched him diligently, they sent to him spies who should feign themselves to be righteous men, that they might lay hold of some word of his, in order to deliver him up to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.

²⁴ But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew all men. ²⁵ And because he had no need that any one should testify of man, for he himself knew what was in man;

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God: for it is written, He entangleth the wise in their craft."

⁹ nor let us try the Christ as some indeed of them did, and were destroyed by serpents:

¹³ There is indeed no creature concealed from his sight. All things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

²⁸ And as that servant was going out, he met one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred deniars and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay me what thou owest.

² And having agreed with some labourers for a deniar a day, he sent them to his vineyard.

¹ Now it happened in those days, that an edict came forth from Caesar Augustus, that this whole inhabited land should be enrolled.

¹ Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea; and Herod, tetrarch of Galilee; and his brother Philip, tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis; and Lysanias, being tetrarch of Abilene

²² Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar, or is it not?

² and began to accuse him, saying, We found this man perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king.

²⁸ And one of them named Agabus rising up signified by the spirit that there would very soon be a great famine throughout the whole inhabited land, which accordingly came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

⁸ To which when Paul replied, Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I committed any offence, ⁹ Festus willing to gratify the Jews addressed Paul saying, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and be judged there before me concerning these things? ¹⁰ Upon which Paul said, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged. To the Jews I have done no wrong, as thou thyself well knowest. ¹¹ If indeed I am guilty, or have committed any capital crime, I do not deprecate death: but if the charges which they bring against me be groundless, no man can give me up to gratify them. I appeal to Caesar. ¹² Then Festus, having conferred with his council, replied, Thou hast appealed to Caesar. To Caesar thou shall go.

³² And Agrippa said to Festus, This man might have been set at liberty if he had not appealed to Caesar.

²² All the saints salute you, they especially who are of Caesar's household.

²¹ My son, fear God and the king and be not disobedient to either of them.

²⁷ However, that we may not offend them, go to the sea, and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that cometh up; and having opened its mouth thou wilt find a stater: take that and give it to them for me and thee.

²¹ They say to him, Caesar's. Then he saith to them, Render then to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's.

¹⁷ Then Jesus, answering, said to them, Render to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. And they expressed admiration at him.

¹⁹ But Peter and John in reply to them, said, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God, judge ye. ²⁰ For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

²⁹ In reply to which Peter and the apostles said, We must obey God rather than men.

⁶ Indeed on this account you pay taxes, because there are ministers of God continually employed for this very purpose. ⁷ Render therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute; custom to whom custom; reverence to whom reverence; honour to whom honour is due.

³¹ Whether then you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

¹³ Be subject therefore to every human establishment for the Lord's sake, whether to a king as supreme, ¹⁴ or to governor as persons sent by him for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them who do well. ¹⁵ For it is the will of God that you should by such good behaviour curb the ignorance of foolish men. ¹⁶ As freemen, but not like those who use their freedom as a cover for wickedness, but as servants of God ¹⁷ honour all men, love the brotherhood; fear God; honour the king.

¹¹ if any one speaketh, as speaking the oracles of God; if any one dispenseth, as dispensing out of a stock which God supplieth; that in all things God may be gloried through Jesus Christ, to whom belongeth the glory and the power, for the ages of the ages. Amen.

¹² Companion, how camest thou hither without having on a wedding garment. And he was struck speechless.

²² Upon hearing this they were struck with surprise, and left him and went away.

³⁴ Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they flocked about him for the same purpose.

¹⁷ And upon his saying this, all his opposers were ashamed, and the whole multitude expressed joy for all the glorious things which were done by him.

³⁹ Upon this, some of the scribes addressing him, said, Teacher, thou hast spoken well. ⁴⁰ And after that they did not presume to ask him another question.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God.

¹⁰ For there are many who are disorderly, vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision,

⁶ And Jesus said to them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

¹² Then they understood that he did not caution them against the leaven of the bread, but against the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

²³ On the same day there came to him Sadducees, who say, There is no future state. And they asked him, ²⁴ saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed for his brother. ²⁵ Now there were with us seven brothers. And the first married a wife and died; and having no children, he left his wife for his brother. ²⁶ In like manner also the second and the third, even to the seventh. ²⁷ And last of all, the woman also died: ²⁸ in the future state therefore, whose wife shall she be of the seven? For they all married her. ²⁹ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. ³⁰ For in the future state, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. ³¹ But in respect to the revival of the dead. Have you not read what was spoken to you: by God, saying, ³² "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob," God is not the God of the dead; but of the living. ³³ When the people heard this they were astonished at his manner of teaching.

¹⁸ Then came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no revival of the dead. And they asked him, saying, ¹⁹ Teacher, Moses hath written for us, that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife without leaving children, his brother should take his wife and raise up a seed for his brother. ²⁰ Now there were seven brothers, and the first took a wife, and died without leaving issue. ²¹ Then the second took her, and died, and he left no issue. And the same was the case with the third. ²² Indeed the seven married her, but left no issue. Last of all, the woman also died. ²³ At the revival of the dead, therefore, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? for she hath been wife to the seven. ²⁴ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Are you not led into error because of your not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God? ²⁵ For when the dead rise again, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels in heaven. ²⁶ Now with respect to the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, how God spake in the bush to him, saying, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. ²⁷ He is not the God of the dead; but the God of the living. You are therefore led much astray.

¹ Now while they were speaking to the people; the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, ² displeased at their teaching the people and promulgating by Jesus the resurrection from the dead, came on them,

¹⁷ the chief priest rising up, and all his party; the sect of the Sadducees, they were filled with zeal,

⁶ Paul then perceiving that the one part were Sadducees; and the other Pharisees, cried aloud in the Sanhedrim, Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of a Pharisee. For a hope even of a resurrection of the dead I am now to be judged. ⁷ And on his saying this there arose a dissention between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided. ⁸ For the Sadducees say, There is no resurrection nor any angel nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge both.

¹² Now, if Christ be proclaimed, that he hath been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

¹⁷ and like a gangrene the word of these men will spread, of whom are Hymeneus and Philetus, ¹⁸ who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and subvert the belief of some.

⁸ Whereupon Judas said to Aunan, Go in unto thy brother's wife and be a husband to her and raise up a seed for thy brother.

¹¹ Then Judas said to Thamar his daughter in law, Continue a widow in thy father's house till my son Selom grow up. For he said, Peradventure he also may die as his brothers did. So Thamar went and dwelt at her father's house.

²⁶ And Judas acknowledged them and said, Thamar hath more justice on her side than I, because I did not give her to my son Selom. And he proceeded no more to have knowledge of her.

⁵ When brothers dwell together, and one of them die, and hath no issue, the wife of him who died shall not marry a man abroad, who is not near of kin. The brother of her husband shall go in unto her, and take her to wife, and cohabit with her; ⁶ and the child which she shall bear shall go by the name of him who died, so that his name shall not be blotted out from among Israel. ⁷ And if any man decline to take his brother's wife, the woman shall go to the gate, to the senate, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up his brother's name in Israel. My husband's brother hath refused. ⁸ Thereupon the senate of his city shall send for him, and say to him, Thou must stand up, and say, I will not take her. ⁹ Upon which his brother's wife shall come, in the presence of the senate, and loose one shoe from his foot, and spit before his face, and addressing him, say, So shall be done to the man who will not build up his brother's house in Israel. ¹⁰ And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him who had his shoe loosed.

¹¹ But Noemin said, Return, I pray you, my daughters! for why should you go with me? Have I yet any more sons in my womb to be husbands for you? ¹² Return, I pray you, my daughters! For I am too old to have a husband; for should I say, I am in condition to marry, and should I bear sons,

²⁰ Whoever hath lain with his near of kin, he hath uncovered the nakedness of his near relation, they shall die childless.

³⁰ record the chieftain himself as a man of low rank, exiled by the voice of a herald; for no increase from his seed shall sit on the throne of David, nor any more be chief in Juda.

¹⁰ and all that generation was gathered to their fathers, and another generation arose after them, who knew not the Lord, nor the works which he had done for Israel,

⁴ One generation passeth away and another cometh. But the earth hath continually kept its station.

⁵ because they who are alive must know that they shall die; but the dead are not sensible of any thing and there is no more a portion for them; because the remembrance of these is forgotten,

²⁷ And as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that there is a judgment;

²⁴ saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed for his brother. ²⁵ Now there were with us seven brothers. And the first married a wife and died; and having no children, he left his wife for his brother. ²⁶ In like manner also the second and the third, even to the seventh. ²⁷ And last of all, the woman also died: ²⁸ in the future state therefore, whose wife shall she be of the seven? For they all married her.

⁸ And the master commended the unjust steward, because he had acted prudently. Because the children of this world are more prudent for their generation, than the children of the light, are for theirs;

²⁷ They ate; they drank; they married, and were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all.

² but to avoid fornication let every man have his own wife; and every woman her own husband. ³ Let the husband render due benevolence to the wife; and in like manner the wife to the husband. ⁴ The wife hath not the power over her own body; but the husband: And in like manner the husband hath not the power over his own body; but the wife. ⁵ Withdraw not from each other, unless by mutual consent for a time, that you may devote yourselves to fasting and prayer. Then come together again that satan may not tempt you through your incontinence. ⁶ Now this I say by way of counsel, not of command; ⁷ for I wish all men to be as I myself am. But every one hath his peculiar gift from God, some of one kind; and some, of another. ⁸ I say then to unmarried men and to widows, it is well for them if they continue as I do. ⁹ But if they have not the gift of continency, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn. ¹⁰ And to them who are married I give this injunction; not I but the Lord: That a wife separate not herself from her husband; ¹¹ but if she hath actually separated, let her continue unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband; and that a husband put not away a wife. ¹² And to the rest I say, not the Lord; if any brother hath an unbelieving wife, and she is well satisfied to live with him, let him not divorce her: ¹³ and if any woman hath an unbelieving husband, and he is well satisfied to live with her, let her not divorce him. ¹⁴ For the unbelieving husband is hallowed by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is hallowed by the husband; else your children would be unclean; whereas they are now holy. ¹⁵ But if the unbelieving withdraw; let him or her withdraw, the brother or the sister is not in such cases enslaved: But God hath called us to peace. ¹⁶ For how knowest thou, O wife, but thou mayst save thy husband? Or how knowest thou, O husband, but thou mayst save thy wife?

³¹ Instead of this, "a man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they two will be one flesh,"

⁴ Let marriage be held in esteem by all, and its bed be undefiled: for whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

² And many of them who sleep in mounds of earth shall be raised up, some for everlasting life and some for disgrace and everlasting shame. ³ And they who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and some of the many righteous like the stars for the ages and longer.

³² Even though one speak against the son of man, it may be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the holy Spirit is not to be forgiven, either in the present age, or in that to come.

²⁹ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God.

²⁴ In reply to which, Jesus said to them, Are you not led into error because of your not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God?

³⁶ Watch therefore, on every occasion, praying that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things which will soon come to pass; and to stand before the son of man.

²⁹ and come forth; they who have done good, to a resurrection of life, and they who have done evil, to a resurrection of condemnation.

⁴¹ Thereupon they went from the presence of the Sanhedrim, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

¹⁵ having a confidence in God, which they themselves also entertain, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust;

⁵ there is a clear evidence of the righteous judgment of God that you are accounted worthy of the kingdom of God for which you, actually suffer;

³⁵ Women received their dead children, by a restoration of them to life. As for others, some were tortured, not expecting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection;

⁴ Thou hast a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments. These shall walk with me in white robes because they are worthy.

⁸ Mighty death had swallowed up; but the Lord God hath again wiped every tear from every face; and removed from the whole earth the reproach of this people. For the mouth of the Lord hath spoken.

¹⁴ [J] Him I will deliver from the power of the grave, and from death I will redeem them. [p] death, where is thy punishment? Where thy sting, grave? Is comfort hid from mine eyes?

⁷ Thus saith the Lord Almighty, If thou wilt walk in my ways, and keep my statutes, thou shalt judge my house. And if thou wilt carefully watch my court I will give thee men conversant with these attendants.

³⁰ For in the future state, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

²⁵ For when the dead rise again, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels in heaven.

¹⁷ and if children, then heirs; heirs indeed of God, and joint heirs with Christ if we suffer with him so that with him we may also be glorified. ¹⁸ For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be set against that glory which is about to be revealed for us. ¹⁹ For the earnest expectation of mankind is waiting for the manifestation of the children of God. ²⁰ For to vanity this creation was subjected, not as a voluntary agent, but by him who subjected it to a hope ²¹ that this very creation shall be freed from the slavery of this corruption, that it may enjoy the glorious liberty of the children of God. ²² For we know that this whole creation are groaning together, and even till now are all in pain as a woman in travail. ²³ Nay, even they who have the first fruits of the spirit, even we ourselves are groaning within ourselves, waiting for an adoption the redemption of this body of ours.

²⁶ The last enemy, death, is to be destroyed:

⁴² Thus it is also with respect to the resurrection of the dead. That which is sown, is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption;

⁴⁹ And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

⁵² in a moment in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, for it will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. ⁵³ For this corruptible must put on incorruptibility; and this mortal must put on immortality. ⁵⁴ Now when this corruptible shall have put on incorruptibility; and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then will be brought to pass the word which is written, "Death is completely swallowed up."

²¹ who will transform the body of this our humble state, that it may be made conformable to his glorious body, according to the energy of his power to subject all to himself.

¹³ Now I would not, brethren, have you ignorant in respect to them who are composed to rest, that you may not be afflicted with grief, like others who have no hope. ¹⁴ For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so [should we] also, that God will, by the agency of Jesus, bring with him them who are composed to rest. ¹⁵ For this we tell you by a word of the Lord, that we the living who are left till the coming of the Lord shall not anticipate them who are laid to rest ¹⁶ that the Lord himself, with an authoritative command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ shall be raised first; ¹⁷ afterwards we who are left alive shall, together with them, be conveyed in clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we shall be forever with the Lord.

¹ Behold what a love the Father hath shewn us, that we should be called children of God: on this account the world doth not know us, because it did not know him. ² Beloved, we are now children of God. Though it hath not yet been manifested what we shall be, yet we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him: that we shall see him as he is.

⁶ Then I looked and behold in the midst of the throne and of the four animate beings and in the midst of the elders stood a lamb as if it had been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes which are the seven spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. ⁷ And he went and took the book out of the right hand of him who was sitting on the throne. ⁸ And when he took the book, the four animate beings and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, having, every of them, kitharas and golden cups full of incense which is the prayers of the saints. ⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy art thou to take the book and to open the seals of it, because thou hast been slain and hast purchased us for God with thy blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation; ¹⁰ and hast made us kings and priests for our God, and we shall reign on the earth." ¹¹ And I looked and heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the animate beings and the elders and the number of them was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessing."

¹³ And I heard every created being which is in the heaven and on the earth and underneath the earth and those which are in the sea, even all in them, saying, "to him who is sitting on the throne and to the lamb, be the blessing and the honour and the glory and the dominion for the ages of the ages." ¹⁴ And the four animate beings said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him who liveth for the ages of the ages.

⁹ After this I looked and behold! a great multitude, which no one could number, of every nation and of tribes and peoples and tongues standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clad in white robes; and palm branches in their hands; ¹⁰ and they cried with a loud voice, saying, "To our God who is sitting on the throne and to the Lamb be ascribed this salvation!" ¹¹ Whereupon all the angels who stood around the throne and the elders and the four animate beings prostrated themselves before the throne and worshipped God, ¹² saying, "Amen! the blessing and the glory and the wisdom and the thanks and the honour and the power and the majesty be to our God for ages of the ages! Amen."

⁶ Happy and holy is he who hath a portion in this first resurrection. Over them the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and the Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years.

⁴ And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. And there shall no more be death; nor shall grief, nor screaming, nor pain be any more; for the former things are gone.

² and in the middle of the broad street of the city on both sides of the river at proper distances there was a tree of life bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month and the leaves of the tree are to heal the nations. ³ And nothing subject to a curse shall ever be there; but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall serve him ⁴ and see his face; and his name shall be on their foreheads. ⁵ And there shall be no night there; nor have they any need of a lamp or of the light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light; and they shall reign for the ages of the ages.

⁹ and he saith to me, See thou do not: I am a fellow servant of thee and of thy brethren the prophets and of them who keep the words of this book: Worship God.

⁷ And I will establish this my covenant with thee and thy seed after thee, throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be thy God and the God of thy seed after thee.

¹³ And the Lord leaned over it and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father and the God of Isaak. Fear not. To thee and to thy seed I will give the land in which thou art sleeping.

²¹ and bring me back safely to my father's house, The Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set up as a pillar shall be for a house of God. And of all that thou mayst give me I will set apart a tenth for thee.

⁹ Then Jacob said, God of my father Abraham, and the God of my father Isaak, Thou, Lord, who saidst to me, Return to the land of thy nativity, and I will deal well with thee;

² And an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a fire blazing out of a bush. And when he saw that the bush blazed with fire, but was not consumed, ³ Moses said, I will go near and see this great sight; why the bush is not consumed. ⁴ But when the Lord saw that he drew near to look; the Lord called to him out of the bush saying, Moses! Moses! And he said, What is it? ⁵ And he said, Approach not hither. Loose the sandals from thy feet; for the place where thou standest is holy ground. ⁶ Then he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob. Whereupon Moses turned away his face; for he was afraid to look forward in the presence of God.

¹⁵ Again God said to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel, The Lord, the God of our fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob hath sent me to you. This is my everlasting name and memorial to all generations.

¹⁶ So may the things acceptable To him who appeared in the bush, Come upon the head of Joseph; He indeed is glorified In being the head over brothers.

³ And he sent his servants to call them who were invited to the wedding, but they would not come. ⁴ Again he sent other servants, saying, Tell them who have been invited, Behold I have prepared my dinner. My bullocks and my fatlings are killed and all things are ready. Come to the wedding feast. ⁵ But they turned away with indifference, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise ⁶ and the rest seized his servants, insulted, and slew them. ⁷ When the king heard this he was incensed, and sent forth his armies, and destroyed the murderers, and burned their city. ⁸ Then he saith to his servants, The wedding is indeed ready. but they who have been invited are unworthy; ⁹ Go ye therefor, to the highways, and invite to the wedding as many as you meet with. ¹⁰ Accordingly the servants went out to the highway and assembled all that they met, bad and good. And the wedding was plentifully supplied with guests. ¹¹ And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment, and saith to him, ¹² Companion, how camest thou hither without having on a wedding garment. And he was struck speechless. ¹³ Then the king said to the attendants, Bind his hands and feet and carry him out and cast him into the outer darkness. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there. ¹⁴ For there are many called, but few chosen. ¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went out and consulted how they might ensnare him by a discourse. ¹⁶ So they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, We know that thou art true and teachest the way of God truly, and carest for no one. For thou respectest not the persons of men. ¹⁷ Tell us therefore what thou thinkest. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not? ¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me? ¹⁹ Shew me the tribute money. So they brought him a deniar, ²⁰ then he saith to them, Whose image and inscription is this? ²¹ They say to him, Caesar's. Then he saith to them, Render then to Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. ²² Upon hearing this they were struck with surprise, and left him and went away.

³⁰ And when forty years were completed, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness at mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush, ³¹ which when Moses saw, he was astonished at the vision. And as he was going near to view it, there came a voice of the Lord to him, ³² "I am the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob." Upon which Moses trembled and durst not view it.

⁵ The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou art he who restoreth me mine inheritance. ⁶ The lines have fallen to me in the best places: for this inheritance of mine is the best for me. ⁷ I will bless the Lord who hath given me understanding: even now at night my reins have instructed me. ⁸ I saw the Lord continually before me. Because he is at my right hand that I may not be moved; ⁹ therefore my heart was gladdened; and my tongue exulted with joy: moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope; ¹⁰ that thou wilt not leave my soul in the mansion of the dead nor suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. ¹¹ Thou hast made known to me the ways of life: thou with thy presence wilt fill me with joy. At thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.

²³ Praise him, ye who fear the Lord praise him, all ye seed of Jacob. Let all the seed of Israel fear him; ²⁴ for he hath not slighted, nor abhorred the prayer of the distressed; nor turned away his face from me: but hearkened to me when I cried to him. ²⁵ My praise shall be of thee in a great congregation: I will pay my vows before them who fear him. ²⁶ The needy shall eat and be satisfied: and they who seek the Lord will praise him. Their heart shall be forever alive.

¹ A Psalm of praise. By David, I will extol thee, my God, my king: and bless thy name for ever and ever. ² Day by day I will bless thee, and praise thy name for ever and ever.

⁵⁷ As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he. who eateth me, even he will live by me.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life; he who believeth in me, though he may die, shall live. ²⁶ And none who liveth and believeth in me shall ever die. Believest thou this?

¹⁹ Yet a little while and the world seeth me no more; but you see me. Because I live therefore you shall live.

¹⁰ For inasmuch as he died for sin, he died once for all; but as he liveth, he liveth for God. ¹¹ So likewise reckon ye yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive for God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²² But being now set free from sin and become servants of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and in the end, everlasting life. ²³ For die wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁷ For none of us liveth to himself, nor doth any die to himself. ⁸ For whether we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord; so that whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. ⁹ For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and the living.

¹⁶ And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God hath said, "Because I will dwell among them and walk about among them, and will be their God, and they shall be my people;

⁴ For though from weakness he was crucified, yet by the power of God he is alive, therefore though we are weak in him, yet by the power of God we will be alive with him for you.

³ For you have died, and your life is hid with the Christ in God. ⁴ When the Christ, our life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with him in glory.

¹⁶ but now they desire a better; that is a heavenly country; therefore God is not ashamed of them; to be invoked as their God: for he prepared a city for them.

¹⁵ For this cause they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple. And he who sitteth on the throne will spread his tent over them. ¹⁶ They shall no more hunger, nor shall they thirst any more; nor shall the sun dart upon them; nor any scorching heat: ¹⁷ for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will tend them and guide them to living fountains of water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

¹ Then he shewed me a pure river of the water of life, clear as chrystal, issuing from the throne of God and the lamb;

³⁴ Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they flocked about him for the same purpose. ³⁵ And one of them, an expounder of the law, with a view to 36 try him, asked him this question, ³⁶ Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? ³⁷ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. ³⁸ This is the first and great commandment. ³⁹ And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ⁴⁰ On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets.

²⁸ Then one of the Scribes who had heard them disputing, and knew that he had answered them properly, coming up, asked him, Which is the chief commandment of all? ²⁹ Whereupon Jesus answered, This is the chief of all the commandments: "Hear, O Israel, The Lord is our God: ³⁰ the Lord is one: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding, and with all thy strength." This is the first commandment. ³¹ And the second, resembling it, is this, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". There is no other commandment greater than these. ³² Upon this the Scribe said to him, right! Teacher! thou hast said truly that there is one God; and there is no other besides him: ³³ and to love him with the whole heart, and with the whole understanding, and with the whole soul, and with the whole strength; and to love one's neighbour as himself, is more than all the burnt offerings and the sacrifices. ³⁴ Whereupon Jesus observing that he had answered discreetly, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And, after that, no one ventured to ask him any questions.

⁹ And there was a great clamour. And the Scribes, siding with the Pharisees, arose and contended, saying, We find nothing amiss in this man. If a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

⁵ But answer a fool according to his folly; that he may not think himself wise.

⁴⁶ And none could answer him a word. Nor did any one presume from that day forward to ask him any more questions.

³⁴ Whereupon Jesus observing that he had answered discreetly, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And, after that, no one ventured to ask him any questions.

⁶ because for us a child is born, and to us a son is given, whose government is on his own shoulder; and his name is called, "The Messenger of Great Counsel." For I will bring peace on the rulers and health for him. ⁷ His government shall be great and to his peace there is no boundary, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to reestablish it, and support it with judgment and justice, henceforth and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

¹ And there shall spring up a shoot from the root of Jessai; even from that root shall spring up a blooming shoot; ² and the spirit of God will rest upon him; a spirit of wisdom and understanding; a spirit of counsel and majesty; a spirit of knowledge and piety:

⁵ Behold the days are coming, saith the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous shoot, who shall reign king and understand and execute judgment and justice on the earth. ⁶ In his days Juda shall be saved and Israel shall dwell securely. And the name which the Lord will give him by the prophets shall be Josedek [Lord of righteousness.]

¹ The genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham.

⁴¹ Now while the Pharisees were together, Jesus asked them, ⁴² saying, What think ye concerning the Christ? Whose Son is he? They say to him, David's. ⁴³ He saith to them, How then doth David by the spirit call him Lord; saying, ⁴⁴ "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool." ⁴⁵ If then David calleth him Lord: how is he his son?

³⁵ Then Jesus, in the course of his teaching in the temple, said, How do the Scribes say, That the Christ is the son of David? ³⁶ For David himself, by the Holy Spirit, said, "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool." ³⁷ If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son? As the great multitude heard him with pleasure,

³⁸ he cried, saying, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. ³⁹ Upon this they who went before checked him that he might hold his peace; but he cried still the louder, Son of David, have pity on me.

⁴² Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the town whence David was?

³⁰ Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, that from the fruit of his loins he would, as far as regardeth the flesh, raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

³ concerning his son, [him who was of a seed of David with respect to flesh ⁴ him who was determinately marked out as son of God by a power, according to a spirit of holiness, of rising up from the dead,]

¹⁶ I Jesus have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the congregations. I am the root and the offspring of David; the bright and the morning star.

¹ Now these were the last words of David. Faithful is David the son of Jessai, And faithful the man whom the Lord hath set Over the anointed of the God of Jacob. And sweet are the psalms of Israel. ² The Spirit of the Lord hath spoken by me, And his word was upon my tongue.

¹ A Psalm. By David. The Lord said to my Lord; sit at my right hand; till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

²⁰ for it is written in the book of Psalms, "Let his fold be desolate, and let there be no inhabitant therein. And, His office let another take;"

³⁴ For David did not ascend into the heavens; yet he saith, "The Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand, ³⁵ until I make thine enemies thy footstool."

³³ That God hath fulfilled it to us their children by raising up Jesus, even as it is written in the second psalm, "Thou art my son, this day I have begotten thee" ³⁴ and that he hath raised him from the dead never more to return to corruption, as he said, "I will give you the gracious promises to David which are faithful: ³⁵ and therefore, in another place, he saith, "Thou wilt not suffer thy holy one to see corruption!"

²⁵ For he must reign until he hath put all the enemies under his feet.

¹³ And to which of these messengers did he ever say, "Sit at my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool."

⁷ Wherefore as the Holy Spirit saith, "Today since you have heard his voice,

¹ Why did nations rage? And tribes meditate vain things? ² The kings of the earth combined; and the chiefs assembled together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, [saying] ³ "Let us break their bands asunder and throw off from us their yoke." ⁴ He who dwelleth in heaven will laugh them to scorn; the Lord will treat them with derision. ⁵ Then will he speak to them in his wrath and trouble them with his sore displeasure. ⁶ But as for me, by him I am appointed king on Sion his holy mountain. ⁷ I proclaim the decree of the Lord; to me the Lord said, "Thou art my Son, this day I have begotten thee,

⁸ Let thine enemies feel thy hand: and thy right hand find out all that hate thee. ⁹ Thou wilt make them like an oven of fire, at the time of thy presence. The Lord with his wrath will confound them, and a fire shall devour them. ¹⁰ Thou wilt destroy their fruit from the earth, and their seed from among the sons of men. ¹¹ Because on thee they were turning evils. Were devising a counsel which they could not accomplish; ¹² because thou wilt set them behind those thou hast left; wilt prepare others to be before them.

⁹ Let the Ethiopeans bow down before him; and let his enemies lick the dust.

⁴ They traduced me for my love; but I prayed, ⁵ when they were rendering me evil for good, and hatred for my love. ⁶ "Set a sinner over him; and let an accuser stand at his right hand. ⁷ When he is judged let him be condemned; and let his supplication be deemed an offence. ⁸ Let his days be few; and let another take his office. ⁹ Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his sons be vagabonds and beg: let them be cast out from their dwellings. ¹¹ Let an extortioner seize all that he hath; and strangers make spoil of his labours. ¹² Let there be none to help him; nor any to compassionate his orphan children. ¹³ Let his children be for destruction; In one generation let his name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be continually before the Lord. And let the memorial of them be cut off from the earth: ¹⁶ because he did not remember to shew mercy; but persecuted a man needy and afflicted: to put to death one who was broken hearted. ¹⁷ As he loved cursing, let it come on him: as he delighted not in blessing let it be far from him. ¹⁸ As he clothed himself with cursing as with a mantle; and it came like water in his bowels; and like oil into his bones: ¹⁹ let it be to him as the mantle which covereth him: and as the girdle with which he is continually girded." ²⁰ From the Lord is this work of them who traduce me: and of them who speak evil against my soul.

⁵ The Lord at thy right hand hath crushed kings in the day of his wrath. ⁶ He will judge among the nations: he will multiply slaughters: he will crush the heads of many on the earth.

¹⁴ And the armies in heaven clad in cotton robes white and clean followed him on white horses. ¹⁵ And out of his mouth issueth a sharp sword that with it he may smite the nations. And he himself tendeth them with an iron crook; and he himself treadeth the press of the venemous and raging wine of God Almighty. ¹⁶ And he hath on his mantle and on his thigh this name written King Of Kings And Lord Of Lords. ¹⁷ And I saw an angel standing in the sun and he cried with a loud voice to all the birds which fly in mid-heaven saying, Come and gather yourselves together to the supper of the great God; ¹⁸ that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of generals, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses and of them mounted on them and the flesh of all both freemen and slaves, both small and great. ¹⁹ And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to come to a battle with him who was mounted on the horse and with his army. ²⁰ And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet who did these signs before him by which he led astray them who had received the mark of the beast, and them who worshipped his image. Both these were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone; ²¹ and the rest were slain with the sword of him who was mounted on the horse; with that which issueth out of his mouth; and all the birds were glutted with their flesh.

¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and he shall be called Emmanuel.

²³ "The virgin shall conceive and bear a son and thou shalt call his name Emmanuel," the meaning of which is, God with us:

³¹ Now behold thou shall conceive, and bear a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. ³² He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. ³³ And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. And of his kingdom there shall be no end. ³⁴ Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I know not man. ³⁵ And the angel answering, said to her, A holy spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee, therefore the holy offspring will be called the son of God.

¹¹ That to you there is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

⁵ whose ancestors were the patriarchs, and from whom, with regard to flesh, the Christ is [descended] who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

¹⁶ [and unquestionably great is the mystery of this religion,] God hath been manifested in flesh, justified by spirit, hath appeared to messengers, been proclaimed among nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

¹⁰ Then having called the multitude to him, he said to them, Hear and understand;

¹ Then Jesus spake to the multitude and to his disciples, ² saying, The Scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' chair.

⁵ But all their works they do to be seen by men. For this they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge the tufts of their mantles, ⁶ and love the uppermost places at entertainments; and the first seats in the synagogues; ⁷ and salutations in places of public resort; and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

³⁴ Then, having called to him the multitude, with his disciples, he said to them, Whosoever hath a mind to come under my guidance, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

³⁸ he said to them in his manner of teaching, Beware of the Scribes, who are fond of walking in long robes, and of salutations in public places of resort, ³⁹ and of the principal seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost places at entertainments

²⁰ Them, who sin, rebuke before all, that others may fear.

²³ A man's pride will bring him low: but the Lord will gloriously support the humble.

¹⁵ And he gave them a charge, saying, Take heed; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod.

⁴³ Alas for you, Pharisees! because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public places.

¹ by which myriads of the people being drawn together, so as to trample upon one another, he took occasion to say to his disciples, Above all, things beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy;

⁷ Then observing how eager the guests were for the first places at table, he addressed them in a parable, and said,

¹⁰ in brotherly love be tenderly affectionate one to another: in honour prefer one another;

³ upon nothing out of a spirit of contention or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind esteeming one another better than yourselves, ⁴ look not every one to his own interests, but every one of you to the interests also of others. ⁵ For let this temper of mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus,

¹⁵ Be thou on thy guard against him, for he greatly withstood our words.

⁹ I wrote to the congregation, but Diotrephes, who affecteth a preeminence among them, doth not regard us.

² turning aside the cause of the distressed; robbing the poor of my people, of their right; that the widow

⁶ and do not oppress the stranger and orphan and widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place, nor go after strange gods to your hurt: ⁷ then will I cause you to dwell in this place; [in the land which I gave to your fathers] from age to age. ⁸ But if you continue to trust in lying words from which you can derive no benefit; ⁹ and commit murder, and adultery and steal and swear to a falsehood, and burn incense to Baal; and when you have gone after strange gods which you did not know; ¹⁰ you, because of your calamities, have then come and stood before me, in the house which is called by my name, and said, "We have been restrained from committing these abominations;"

⁷ In thee they reviled father and mother; and in thee practised injustice against the stranger. They oppressed the widow and the orphan;

³¹ They come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions;

⁷ and dashed their sandals against the heads of the poor; and turned aside the way of the meek; and a son and a father went in unto the same handmaid. That they might profane the name of their God,

⁴ [p] Hear this, I beseech you, ye who every morning oppress the needy, and by your tyranny drive the poor from the land, saying, ⁵ "When will the new moon be over that we may buy? And the sabbaths, that we may open store? to make the measure small, and the weight heavy, and to make the balance uneven, ⁶ that we may purchase the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals, when from every kind of product we shall have made gain.

² They coveted fields and plundered orphans and tyrannised over houses; they plundered a man and his household; a man and his inheritance;

⁸ Indeed this people of mine have openly risen up for enmity. In direct opposition to his peace they have even stripped off his skin, that the extreme horror of war might destroy hope.

² As for them who hate good and seek evil, who tear off the skin from these and the flesh from their bones:

²² But I say to you, the condition of Tyre and Sidon will in a day of judgment, be more tolerable than yours. ²³ And thou Capernaum, which hast been exalted to heaven, shalt be brought down to the mansion of the dead; for if the miracles, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. ²⁴ But I say to you, that the condition of the land of Sodom will, in a day of judgment, be more tolerable than thine.

¹³ Now alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men. For you neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them who are going in, to enter.

²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean. ²⁷ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like whitened sepulchres. These indeed appear beautiful on the outside; but within they are full of dead men's bones, and of all Corruption. ²⁸ In like manner you also appear outwardly to men to be righteous; but you are inwardly full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

⁴⁰ who devour the families of widows, and make long prayers for a disguise. Such shall receive greater condemnation.

¹² Now I say to you, the condition of Sodom will be more tolerable on that day than the condition of that city. ¹³ Alas for thee, Chorazin! Alas for thee, Bethsaida! for if the miracles which have been performed in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

⁴⁷ Now that servant who knew his master's will, and did not keep himself ready, nor act agreeably to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes; ⁴⁸ but he who did not know it, and did things deserving chastisement, shall be beaten with few. For to whom much is given, of him much will be required. And the more a man is entrusted with, the more will be demanded from him.

⁵ For never did we at any time use flattering words, as you know; nor a pretext for covetousness, God is witness;

² For the men will be selfish, avaricious, vain, haughty, addicted to slander, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, ³ void of natural affection, perfidious, false accusers, intemperate, fierce, destitute of love for goodness, ⁴ betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, ⁵ having a form of religion but denying the power of it. From such turn away; ⁶ for of such sort are they who insinuate themselves into families, and lead captive weak women laden with sin, led aside by various lusts,

¹⁶ they make a profession of knowing God, but with their works they deny him; being abominable, and disobedient, and lost to every good work.

¹ Be not, my brethren, many teachers; as you know that we shall receive a severer sentence;
