¹ Immediately after this he travelled through cities and villages, publishing and proclaiming the glad tidings of the reign of God, accompanied by the twelve, ² and by certain women who had been delivered from evil spirits and diseases, particularly Mary, called Magdalene, Out of whom had gone seven demons; ³ and Joanna the wife of Chusa, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered to him out of their possessions. ⁴ And as a great multitude were coming together, and those in every city were flocking to him, he said by way of parable, ⁵ The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some fell on the highway and was trampled under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. ⁶ And some fell on rocky ground, and having sprung up, it withered for want of moisture. ⁷ And some fell among thorns, and the thorns springing up with it, choaked it. ⁸ And some fell on good ground, and sprang up and yielded increase an hundred fold. Having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Whosoever hath ears to hear, let him hear. ⁹ And when his disciples asked him, saying, What is the meaning of this parable, ¹⁰ he said, To you it is granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, which to others are couched under parables, so that they see and do not see, and they hear and do not understand. ¹¹ Now this is the meaning of the parable. The seed is the word of God. ¹² By the highway, are meant those hearers out of whose hearts the devil coming, taketh away the word, that they may not believe and be saved. ¹³ By the rocky ground are meant those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but not having it rooted in them, they are but temporary believers, and in time of trial apostatise. ¹⁴ The ground overrun with thorns denoteth them who hear, and who going away are choaked with cares and riches and the pleasurable enjoyments of life, so that they do not bring fruit to perfection. ¹⁵ But by the good ground are meant they, who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, retain it, and perseveringly bring forth fruit. ¹⁶ Now no one having lighted a lamp covereth it with a vessel or putteth it under a couch; but setteth it on a stand that they who come in may see the light. ¹⁷ For there is nothing obscure which shall not be made clear; nor any thing concealed which shall not be made known and come to light. ¹⁸ Take heed therefore how you hear; for to him who improveth, more shall be given; but from him who improveth not, even what he thinketh he hath, will be taken away. ¹⁹ When his mother and his brethren came to him, and could not get near him by reason of the crowd, ²⁰ and some informed him, saying, Thy mother and thy brethren are standing without, and desire to see thee; ²¹ he in reply, said to them, My mother and mv brethren are they who hear the word of God and do it. ²² One day Jesus having gone on board a vessel with his disciples, said to them, Let us cross over to the other side of the lake. So they set sail. ²³ And as they were sailing he fell asleep; and a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were filled, and in danger; ²⁴ Whereupon they went near and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we are lost. Upon which he arose and rebuked the wind, and the raging of the water, and they were still; and there was a calm. ²⁵ And he said, to them, Where is your faith? And they being terrified, expressed admiration, saying one to another, Who in reality is this, that he commandeth even the winds and the water, and they obey him! ²⁶ And when they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee; ²⁷ just as he was landing he was met by a man of the city who had been long possessed by demons, and who wore no clothes, nor abode in any house, but in the tombs; ²⁸ who upon seeing Jesus, screamed and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, What hast thou to do with me, Jesus son of the Most High God. I beseech thee, torment me not. ²⁹ For he had commanded the unclean spirit to go out of the man. For it had often seized him. And when he was bound with chains and fastened with fetters, bursting the bonds, he was driven by the demon into the wilderness. ³⁰ Then Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion. [For many demons had entered into him] ³¹ and entreated him that he would not command them to go into the abyss. ³² Now there was a herd of many swine there, feeding on the mountain, so they besought him to permit them to enter into the swine. And when he permitted them, ³³ the demons quitting the man, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down a precipice into the lake, and were drowned. ³⁴ When the swine herds saw what had happened, they fled, and running away, spread the news through the city and the country ³⁵ Upon which the people came out to see what was done. And when they came to Jesus and found the man, out of whom the demons were gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right senses, they were terrified. ³⁶ And upon being informed by the spectators how the demoniac had been cured, ³⁷ all the people of the neighbouring country of the Gadarenes entreated him to depart from them. Because they were struck with great terror, he therefore going on board the vessel, set out on his return. ³⁸ Now the man, out of whom the demons had gone, begged to be with him. But Jesus dismissed him, saying, ³⁹ Return to thy house, and tell what God hath done for thee. So he returned, and published through the whole city all that Jesus had done for him. ⁴⁰ And when Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. ⁴¹ And behold there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue, who prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, besought him to go to his house; ⁴² because he had a daughter, an only child, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. And as he was going, the people crowded him; ⁴³ and a woman, who had been twelve years afflicted with an issue of blood, and who had spent all her living on physicians, none of whom could cure her, ⁴⁴ came behind and touched the tuft of his mantle; and instantly her issue of blood was staunched. ⁴⁵ Thereupon Jesus said, Who touched me? And when all denied, Peter and they who were with him, said; Master, the crowds are thronging and pressing thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me? ⁴⁶ But Jesus said, Some one hath touched me, for I perceived a power going forth from me. ⁴⁷ And when the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling, and prostrating herself before him, told him in the presence of all the people, for what cause she had touched him, and how she was cured instantly. ⁴⁸ Whereupon he said to her, Daughter, take courage; thy faith hath cured thee. Go in peace. ⁴⁹ And while he was yet speaking, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, and saith to him, Thy daughter is dead. Trouble not the teacher. ⁵⁰ Upon hearing this, Jesus, addressed him, saying, Be not afraid. Only believe; and she will recover. ⁵¹ And when he entered the house, he permitted none to go .in, but Peter and James and John, and the father and the mother of the child. ⁵² Now all were weeping and lamenting her. But he said, Weep not. She is not dead; but asleep. ⁵³ Upon which they derided him, knowing that she was dead. ⁵⁴ And when he had put them all out, and taken her by the hand, he called, saying, Maiden, arise. ⁵⁵ Whereupon her breath returned, and she arose immediately. And he ordered some food to be given her. ⁵⁶ And her parents were astonished. And he charged them to tell no one what was done.

¹ [M] THE SPIRIT of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor, to heal them who are brokenhearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives, and a recovery of sight to the blind: ² to proclaim an acceptable year of the Lord and a day of retribution. To comfort all who are mourning; ³ that to the mourners in Sion may be given, glory instead of ashes, oil of joy to the mourners, robes of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called generations of righteousness, a plant of the Lord for glory.

²³ Then Jesus went through all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the reign and curing every disease, and every malady among the people.

³⁵ Then Jesus took a circuit through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the reign, and healing every disease and every malady among the people.

² Now the names of the twelve disciples were these. First, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, ³ Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, James the son of Alpheus and Lebbeus called Thaddeus, ⁴ Simon the Chananite and Judas Iscariot, even he who delivered him up.

¹ And when Jesus had finished his instructions to these his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and make proclamation Ln their cities.

¹⁹ When any one heareth the doctrine of the kingdom and doth not mind it, the evil one cometh and snatcheth away what was sown in his heart. This is the meaning of that sown on the highway.

³⁹ Accordingly he proceeded, proclaiming the news in their synagogues, through all Galilee, and casting out demons.

¹⁶ namely, Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, ¹⁷ and James, the son of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James, [these he surnamed Boanerges, that is, sons of thunder] ¹⁸ and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Chananite, ¹⁹ and Judas Iscariot, who delivered him up. Upon their going into a house,

¹⁰ Whereupon the angel said to them, Be not afraid; for lo! I bring you glad tidings; matter of great joy, which it will be to all the people ¹¹ That to you there is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

¹⁸ The spirit of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor; to heal them who are broken hearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives; and a recovery of sight, to the blind; to set at liberty the bruised;

⁴³ But he said to them, I must publish the glad tidings of the reign of God in other cities also, because I am sent for this purpose. ⁴⁴ Accordingly he proceeded on, making proclamation in the synagogues of Galilee.

¹⁴ Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew, his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, ¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James, son of Alpheus, and Simon, surnamed Zelotes, ¹⁶ Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, even he who was a traitor.

³⁸ how God anointed him with a holy spirit and power. Him who went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with him,

³² And we proclaim to you the glad tidings with respect to the promise made to the fathers,

¹⁵ and how shall they proclaim, unless they be sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of them who proclaim the joyful message of peace"who proclaim the glad tidings of good things."

⁵⁵ Now many women were there, looking on at a distance, who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee to wait upon him. ⁵⁶ Among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

⁴⁰ Now there were women looking on at a distance, among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger, and of Joses, and Salome; ⁴¹ [these had attended him when he was in Galilee, and ministered to him] and many others who had come up with him to Jerusalem.

¹ So when the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might go and embalm him.

⁹ Now Jesus, having risen very early in the morning of the first day of the week, appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven demons.

³⁰ Then Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion. [For many demons had entered into him]

²⁷ And a great multitude of the people followed him, among whom were many women, who beat their breasts, and bewailed him.

⁴⁹ Now all his male acquaintance had stood at a distance, while the women, who had accompanied him from Galilee, were viewing these things.

⁵⁵ When the women who had come with Jesus from Galilee, had followed him down and seen the sepulchre, and how the body was laid,

²⁵ Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

¹⁴ These all continued with one mind in prayer and supplication, with the women, particularly Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

¹⁴ But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be enabled to shew such liberality to thee. For all things are thine and of thine own we have given thee.

¹⁸ And her traffick and gain shall be holy to the Lord. All her gain shall not be treasured up for themselves, but for them who dwell before the Lord, that they may eat and drink and be filled, and for contributions to be kept in remembrance before the Lord.

¹¹ and having entered the house they found the child with Mary his mother. Whereupon, prostrating themselves, they did him homage. Then opening their treasures they presented him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

¹ At that time Herod the tetrarch hearing of the fame of Jesus,

⁴⁰ And the king in reply will say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as you have done this to one of these my brethren, even the least, you have done it to me.

¹¹ For you have the poor always with you; but me you have not always.

⁷ When Herod, the tetrarch, heard of all that was done by him, he was perplexed; because it was said by some, that John was raised from the dead; ⁸ and by others, that Elias is plainly come; and by others, that one of the ancient prophets is risen up. ⁹ And Herod said, John I beheaded: but who is this of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

¹⁰ Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the rest with them, who told these things to the apostles.

⁴⁶ Jesus therefore went again to Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain officer of the king, whose son was sick at Capernaum. ⁴⁷ This person, upon hearing that Jesus was come from Judea to Galilee, went to him and intreated him to go down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ Jesus therefore said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, can you not believe? ⁴⁹ The officer saith to him, Sir, Come down before my child die. ⁵⁰ Jesus saith to him, Go home: thy son liveth. And the man believed the word which Jesus spake to him, and went away. ⁵¹ And as he was going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. ⁵² Whereupon he inquired of them at what hour he began to mend. And they told him, that yesterday, at seven o'clock, the fever left him. ⁵³ So the father knew that it was the very time when Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth, and he and his whole family believed.

³⁶ Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha [the signification of which in Greek, is Dorcas [a Roe.]] This woman abounded in good works and in acts of charity. ³⁷ And at this time she fell sick and died. And when they had washed her, they laid her out in an upper room. ³⁸ And as Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, intreating him to come to them without delay. ³⁹ Accordingly Peter arose and went with them. And when he came they took him up to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him, weeping and shewing the tunicks and mantles which Dorcas had made while she was with them.

¹ Now there was in the congregation at Antioch, certain prophets and teachers, namely, Barnabas and Symeon called Niger, and Lucius the Cyrenian, and Manaem, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

⁹ For you know the bounty of our Lord Jesus Christ, that rich as he was, he for your sakes became poor, that through his poverty you might become rich.

²² All the saints salute you, they especially who are of Caesar's household.

¹⁰ is she eminent for good works? Hath she brought up children? Hath she exercised hospitality? Hath she washed the feet of the saints? Hath she assisted the afflicted? Hath she been assiduous to perform every good work?

² but such great multitudes flocked to him that he went on board the vessel and sat down, and all the multitude stood on the shore, ³ and he spake many things to them in parables, saying, Behold the sower went out to sow; ⁴ and as he was sowing, some grains fell on the highway and the birds came and devoured them. ⁵ And others fell on rocky ground, where they had little earth; these sprang up immediately, because they had no depth of soil; ⁶ but soon as the sun arose they were scorched; and for want of root withered away: ⁷ and some fell among the thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choaked them. ⁸ And some fell on good ground and yielded increase; some an hundred; some, sixty; and some, thirty fold. ⁹ Whoever hath ears to hear, let him hear.

¹ And when he began to teach again by the sea side, so great a multitude gathered about him, that he went on board the small vessel, and sat at sea, and all the multitude were on the sea shore. ² And he taught them many things in parables. and in his manner of teaching, said to them, Hearken! ³ Behold the sower went out to sow! ⁴ And it happened that as he was sowing, some fell on the highway, and the birds of the air came and devoured it. ⁵ And some fell on rocky ground, where it had not much depth of soil; and it sprang up immediately, because it had not depth of soil, ⁶ but when the sun was up, it was scorched, and, for want of root, withered away: ⁷ and some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked it, so that it yielded no fruit: ⁸ and some fell on good ground, which sprang up and yielded fruit, growing and thriving and bringing forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred fold. ⁹ Then he said to them, Whoever hath ears to hear, let him hear.

¹¹ but the birds alighted on the carcases, on the two halves of them, and Abram sat down with them.

¹¹⁸ Thou hast set at naught all who apostatize from thy statutes; because their inward thought is wicked.

¹³ You are the salt of the earth. Now if the salt become insipid, with what can it be made salt? It is no longer fit for any thing, but to be thrown out of doors, and trampled under foot by men.

²⁴ Another parable he stated to them, saying, The reign of the heavens may be compared to a man sowing good seed in his field. ²⁵ But when the men were asleep; his enemy came and sowed darnel among the wheat, and went away. ²⁶ And when the blade sprang up and put forth the ear, then the darnel appeared.

³⁷ And he answering, said to them, He who soweth the good seed is the son of man.

² And he taught them many things in parables. and in his manner of teaching, said to them, Hearken! ³ Behold the sower went out to sow! ⁴ And it happened that as he was sowing, some fell on the highway, and the birds of the air came and devoured it.

¹⁵ Now these are they by the way side, where the word is sown, who have no sooner heard, than Satan cometh, and taketh away the word which was sown in their hearts.

²⁶ Again he said, The reign of God is as when a man soweth seed on the ground. ²⁷ Whether he sleepeth or waketh, night and day, the seed groweth and increaseth, he knoweth not how. ²⁸ For the earth of itself produceth first a blade, then an ear, then full grains in the ear. ²⁹ And when the grain is ripe, he forthwith applieth the sickle, because the harvest is come.

¹¹ Now this is the meaning of the parable. The seed is the word of God. ¹² By the highway, are meant those hearers out of whose hearts the devil coming, taketh away the word, that they may not believe and be saved.

¹ For this cause we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest we, through negligence, let them slip.

²³ For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a glass. ²⁴ For having viewed himself, and gone away, he instantly forgot what manner of person he was.

³ [p] Lord, thine eyes look for faithfulness. Thou hast chastised them: but they have not grieved. Thou hast consumed them and they would not receive instruction. They have made their faces harder than a rock and refused to return.

¹⁹ and I will give them another heart and put a new spirit in them; and I will take away the stony heart out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh

²⁶ I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you: I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and give you a heart of flesh:

¹² Can horses pursue among rocks? Will they refrain from whinnying at females? Because you have turned judgment into fury, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness,

⁵ And others fell on rocky ground, where they had little earth; these sprang up immediately, because they had no depth of soil; ⁶ but soon as the sun arose they were scorched; and for want of root withered away:

¹⁶ And in like manner the rocky ground denoteth those, who, when they hear the word, receive it immediately with joy; ¹⁷ but not having it rooted in them, they are but temporary; so that when tribulation, or persecution cometh because of the word, they are instantly stumbled.

¹³ By the rocky ground are meant those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but not having it rooted in them, they are but temporary believers, and in time of trial apostatise.

⁴ Or dost thou contemn the riches of his gentleness and forbearance and long suffering, not considering that the gentleness of God is leading thee to a reformation? ⁵ Indeed according to this obduracy, and impenitent heart of thine thou art treasuring up for thyself wrath against a day of the wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

⁷ Wherefore as the Holy Spirit saith, "Today since you have heard his voice, ⁸ Let not your hearts be refractory as at Bitterness as in the day of the temptation in the wilderness;

¹⁵ exhort one another daily by its being said, "Today since you have heard his voice let not your hearts be refractory as at Bitterness."

¹⁸ Thorns and thistles it shall cause to spring up for thee, and thou shalt eat the herbs of the field.

³ For thus saith the Lord to the men of Juda and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Break up for yourselves fallow grounds and sow not among thorns:

⁷ and some fell among the thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choaked them.

²² And that sown among thorns denoteth him, who heareth the word, but worldly care and the delusion of riches choak the word and it becometh unfruitful.

⁷ and some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked it, so that it yielded no fruit:

¹⁸ And these are they sown among thorns, who hear the word, ¹⁹ but the cares of this world, and the delusion of riches, and inordinate desires of other things, crowd in and choke the word, so that it becometh unfruitful.

³⁴ Take heed therefore to yourselves that your hearts be not overloaded with excess of meat, or drink, or worldly cares, and that day come upon you unawares.

⁷ For ground which drinketh up the rain that frequently falleth on it, and produceth plants fit for the use of them for whom it is cultivated, receiveth a blessing from God; ⁸ but that which produceth briars and thorns is rejected, and near a curse, the end of which is for burning.

¹² And Isaak sowed in that land and got that year an hundred fold of barley. And the Lord blessed him

²⁰ Wisdom uttereth her song at the gates and in the streets speaketh boldly; ²¹ and on the tops of walls she maketh proclamation; and at the gates of mighty men taketh a seat and at the gates of a city with confidence saith, ²² "While the innocent adhere to justice they shall not be put to shame: but as for fools who delight in mischief, having become wicked they hated knowledge and are become liable to censures. ²³ Behold I will pour forth to you the dictate of my spirit: and teach you this word of mine;

¹ As for thee thou art to proclaim wisdom; that understanding may attend thee.

¹² The ear heareth and the eye seeth; and both are the work of the Lord.

¹⁵ [p] Hearken and give ear and be not elated; for the Lord hath spoken.

⁴ and I have sent to you my servants the prophets; rising early and sending them, though you have not hearkened nor inclined your ears;

¹⁵ Whoever hath ears to hear let him hear.

²³ But that sown on good ground denoteth him who heareth and mindeth the word, and who beareth fruit and bringeth forth, one a hundred, and another sixty, and another thirty fold.

¹² But to as many as received him he granted the privilege of becoming children of God, even to them who believe in his name, ¹³ who were born, not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

³ Jesus answered and said to him, Verily, verily I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot discern the reign of God. ⁴ Nicodemus saith to him, How can a man be born, when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born? ⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily I say to thee, unless a man be born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

¹⁰ For we are his workmanship, fitted by Christ Jesus for good works, for which God had before prepared us that we might walk therein.

¹⁰ with all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that you may walk worthy of the Lord, to all well pleasing. By every good work we bear fruit, and grow up for the acknowledgment of God;

⁷ Whosoever hath an ear to hear let him hear what the spirit saith to the congregations. To him who overcometh I will give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God."

¹¹ Let him who hath an ear hear what the spirit saith to the congregations. "He who overcometh shall not be hurt by the second death."

³ Let us acknowledge; let us continue our pursuit to know the Lord; sure as the morning we shall find him. He will come like rain for us; like the former and latter rain for the earth."

¹⁰ Then the disciples accosted him, saying, Why speakest thou to them in parables?

¹⁸ Hear then the parable of the sower.

³⁶ Then Jesus dismissed the multitude and went into the house, and his disciples came to him and said, Explain to us the parable of the darnel in the field.

¹⁵ Then Peter addressing him said, Explain to us this parable.

¹⁰ And when he was in private they who were about him. with the twelve, asked him the meaning of this parable.

³⁴ but without a parable he did not speak to them. And in private he explained all to his disciples.

¹⁷ And when he withdrew from the multitude into a house, his disciples asked him concerning this parable. ¹⁸ Whereupon he saith to them, Are you also so void of understanding? Do you not perceive that nothing which entereth into a man from without can defile him;

¹⁵ I no longer call you servants; because the servant doth not know what his master doth. But I have called you friends, because I have made known to you all that I heard from my Father.

⁴ Now hath not the Lord God given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, even at this day?

¹⁴ The Lord is the strength of them who fear him; and it is his covenant to display it for them.

⁹ And he said, "Go and say to this people; hearing you shall hear, though you may not understand: and seeing you shall see, though you may not perceive:

¹⁴ therefore, behold, I will proceed to the removal of this people and I will remove them; and destroy the wisdom of the wise, and darken the understanding of the prudent."

¹⁸ They had not sense to think; for they were so involved in darkness that they could not see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts:

²¹ [p] Hear these things I beseech you, O foolish and stupid people! [J] They have eyes, but they do not see; ears they have, but they do not hear.

²⁵ At that time Jesus took occasion to say, I thank thee, O father, Lord of heaven and earth; that thou having hid these things from the wise and prudent, hast revealed them to babes.

¹¹ And he in reply said to them, To you it hath been granted to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens; but to them it hath not been granted. ¹² For to him who improveth, more shall be given and he shall abound: but from him who improveth not, even that which he hath shall be taken. ¹³ To them I speak in parables for this reason, because they overlook what they see, and are inattentive to what they hear; and they do not understand, ¹⁴ and in them is fulfilled this prophesy of Esaias, which saith, "Hearing you shall hear, though you may not understand, and seeing you shall see, though you may not perceive; ¹⁵ for the heart of this people is callous, and their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, that for a while they may not see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and return that I may heal them." ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. ¹⁷ For verily I say to you, "Many prophets and righteous men have earnestly desired to see what you see, and have not seen them; and to hear what you hear and have not heard them."

¹⁷ And Jesus answering, said to him, Happy art thou, Simon Barjona; for flesh and blood hath not revealed this to thee, but my father who is in heaven.

¹¹ Whereupon he said to them, To you it is granted to know the secrets of the reign of God; but to those without, all these things are delivered in parables,

²¹ At that same time Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou, having hid these things from the wise and learned, hast revealed them to babes; Yes, O father, that it thus seemed good in thy sight. ²² All things are delivered up to me by my Father; and none knoweth who the Son is, except the Father; nor who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whom the Son will please to reveal him. ²³ Then turning to the disciples apart, he said, Happy the eyes, which see what you see! ²⁴ for I say to you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen them; and to hear what you hear, and have not heard them.

⁴⁰ He hath blinded their eyes, and stupified their hearts, so that they saw not with their eyes, nor understood with their heart, nor turned that I might heal them.

²⁶ saying, "Go and say to the people, Hearing you shall hear, though you may not understand; and seeing you shall see, though you may not perceive; ²⁷ for the heart of this people is callous, and their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, that for a while they may not see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn that I may heal them."

⁷ What is the inference? That which Israel sought he did not obtain; but the chosen obtained it and the rest were blinded. ⁸ As it is written, "God hath given them a spirit of stupefaction, eyes not to see and ears not to hear even to this day." ⁹ And David saith, "Let their table be for a snare and for a trap, and for a stumbling block, and for a retribution to them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened that they may not see, And bow down their neck continually."

²⁵ Now to him who is able to establish you according to my glad tidings and the proclamation of Jesus Christ; according to the disclosure of a secret which was concealed in times of old,

⁷ but we speak a mysterious wisdom of God that hidden [wisdom] which God determinately marked out for the benefit of the ages, to our glory ⁸ which none of the chiefs of this age knew [for had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of the glory] ⁹ things indeed, which as it is written, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived; " which God hath prepared for them who love him; ¹⁰ and which God hath revealed to us by his spirit. For this spirit searcheth all things, even the depths of God. ¹¹ For who of mankind knoweth the things of a man, but only the spirit of the man which is in him? So no one knoweth the things of God, but the spirit of God only.

¹¹ Now, it is one and the same spirit who effecteth all these, distributing his own as he pleaseth, to every one.

³ that he hath by a revelation made known to me this secret [as I have briefly written above, ⁴ by the bare reading of which you may perceive my knowledge in this secret of the Christ, ⁵ which in former generations was not made known to the children of men as it hath now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the spirit,] ⁶ That the nations are coheirs, and a joint body, and joint partakers of that promise of his in the Christ by means of the gospel, ⁷ of which I was made a minister according to the free gift of God's favour which was granted to me; according to the energy of his power. ⁸ To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this favour was granted to proclaim among the nations the unsearchable riches of the Christ, ⁹ and to enlighten all men with respect to the dispensation of this secret, which God who created all things by Jesus Christ had hidden from the ages,

²⁶ the mystery which was hidden from the ages and from the generations, but is now manifested to his saints; ²⁷ to whom God hath been pleased to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the nations: namely Christ in you the hope of Glory, ²⁸ whom we proclaim, admonishing every man, and teaching every man with all wisdom; that we may present every one a full grown man in Christ Jesus;

² that, they being knit together in love, their hearts may be comforted, even to all the riches of the full assurance of this knowledge"to the acknowledgement of the mystery of the God and Father and the Christ,

¹⁶ [and unquestionably great is the mystery of this religion,] God hath been manifested in flesh, justified by spirit, hath appeared to messengers, been proclaimed among nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

¹⁰ about which salvation the prophets, who prophesied concerning this favour for you, made diligent inquiry ¹¹ and search, trying to find to what time, and what manner of time, the spirit of Christ within them pointed, when it testified before hand the sufferings which were for Christ, and the glories which should succeed them: ¹² to whom it was revealed that it was not for themselves, but for us, that they dispensed those things which have now been announced to you by them who proclaimed to you the glad tidings with a holy spirit sent from heaven; into which things angels have an earnest desire to look narrowly.

²⁰ For he hath given a law for assistance; that they may not speak like such an oracle as this, which is not worth the giving of gifts for it.

¹⁴ The sower soweth the word. ¹⁵ Now these are they by the way side, where the word is sown, who have no sooner heard, than Satan cometh, and taketh away the word which was sown in their hearts. ¹⁶ And in like manner the rocky ground denoteth those, who, when they hear the word, receive it immediately with joy; ¹⁷ but not having it rooted in them, they are but temporary; so that when tribulation, or persecution cometh because of the word, they are instantly stumbled. ¹⁸ And these are they sown among thorns, who hear the word, ¹⁹ but the cares of this world, and the delusion of riches, and inordinate desires of other things, crowd in and choke the word, so that it becometh unfruitful. ²⁰ And these are they sown on good ground, who hear the word and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some, thirty; and some, sixty; and some, an hundred fold.

⁶ I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. ⁷ So that neither the planter nor the waterer is any thing; it is God only who giveth growth.

⁹ For we are fellow labourers belonging to God; you are God's field; you are his building. ¹⁰ According to the favour of God granted to me, I, like a skilful architect, have laid a foundation, and another buildeth upon it. But let every one take heed how he buildeth thereon. ¹¹ For no one can lay any other foundation than that which is laid, which is Jesus The Christ. ¹² Now if upon this foundation any one buildeth gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

²¹ Therefore having thrown off all the filth and scum of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save your souls;

²³ as you have been born again not of corruptible but of incorruptible seed, by the word of God, which liveth and endureth forever. ²⁴ Because "all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as a flower of grass. the grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth, ²⁵ but the decree of the Lord endureth forever", and this is the decree which hath been proclaimed as glad tidings for you;

²⁴ seeing I have called and you have not answered: and though I continued my speech, you did not attend: ²⁵ but set at naught my counsels and disregarded my reproofs: ²⁶ therefore I will laugh at your calamity; and mock when your destruction cometh.

²⁹ For they hated wisdom and did not chuse the word of the Lord:

⁵ overlook not the dictate of my mouth:

¹¹ But as for you, who forsake me and forget my holy mountain, and who prepare a table for the Demon, and fill up a mixed potion for Fortune,

⁵ The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some fell on the highway and was trampled under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it.

⁹ of him, whose coming is according to the energy of satan, with' all the power, and signs, and wonders of falsehood, ¹⁰ and with all the deceit of this unrighteousness among them who perish. Because they did not embrace the love of the truth that they might be saved; ¹¹ for this cause therefore God will send them the energy of delusion, that they may believe this falsehood; ¹² that all may be condemned who have not believed the truth, but have taken pleasure in unrighteousness. ¹³ Now we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath, from the beginning, chosen you for salvation by a sanctification of spirit and a belief of the truth ¹⁴ to which he hath called you by our glad tidings, to be an acquisition of glory to our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁹ And the great dragon was cast out that old serpent who is called The Devil and Satan who leadeth the whole world astray. He was thrown on the earth and his angels were thrown with him.

²⁸ Now if you will say, What shall we say against him? And what ground of accusation shall we find in him?

¹² Though they believed his words, though they sang his praise; ¹³ they soon forgot his works, they waited not for his counsel. ¹⁴ They indulged a longing desire in the desert, and tried God in a place without water.

³ A man cannot prosper by wickedness: but the roots of the righteous shall not be moved.

¹² The desires of the wicked are evil: but the roots of the righteous are in secure places.

² Day after day they seek me, and desire to know my ways; like a people who have practised righteousness, and who have not forsaken the ordinance of God. They now ask of me a just decision and desire to draw near to God.

³² therefore thou art to them like the sound of a tuneful psaltery: they will hear thy words, but will not do them:

⁴ What shall I do for thee, Ephraim? What shall I do for thee, Juda? As for your goodness, it was like a morning cloud; like the transient dew of the morning:

²⁰ for Herod revered John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man; and he protected him, and did many things by his advice, and heard him with pleasure:

³¹ Then the Lord said to Simon, Simon! behold Satan hath earnestly requested to have you in his power, that he may sift you as wheat: ³² and I have prayed for thee that thy faith may not quite fail. When thou therefore hast recovered thyself, strengthen thou thy brethren.

²³ Now while he was in Jerusalem at the passover, during the festival, many believed in his name when they saw the miracles which he did. ²⁴ But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew all men. ²⁵ And because he had no need that any one should testify of man, for he himself knew what was in man;

³⁵ He was the lighted and shining lamp; and for a while you were disposed to exult with joy at his light.

³⁰ While he was thus speaking many believed in him, ³¹ therefore to the Jews who believed in him Jesus said, If you continue steadily in this doctrine of mine, you are my disciples indeed; ³² and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

⁴² Nevertheless when several of the chief's believed in him, but on account of the Pharisees did not acknowledge it, that they might not be excommunicated, ⁴³ [for they loved the praise of men, more than the praise of God]

² Every branch in me which beareth not fruit, he loppeth off; and every branch which beareth fruit he cleaneth to make it more fruitful.

⁶ if any one continueth not in me he is thrown away as the branch is when it is withered. Such indeed are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned.

¹³ And even Simon himself believed, and being baptized, he continued steadily with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles done, he was astonished. ¹⁴ Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, ¹⁵ who having gone down, prayed for them that they might receive a holy spirit. ¹⁶ For it had not yet fallen on any of them, and they were only baptized to the name of the Lord Jesus. ¹⁷ Then they laid their hands on them and they received a holy spirit. ¹⁸ When Simon saw that by the laying on of the hands of the apostles the holy spirit was given, he offered them money, ¹⁹ saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands he may receive a holy spirit. ²⁰ Whereupon Peter said to him, let thy money with thee be for destruction! Because thou hast thought that this free gift of God may be purchased with money, ²¹ thou hast no portion nor share in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. ²² Repent therefore of this wickedness of thine; and beseech God, if indeed this thought of thy heart can be forgiven thee. ²³ For I perceive that thou art for bitter gall and for a bond of iniquity.

² and though I have a gift of prophesy and understand all the mysteries and all this knowledge; and though I have all that faith, so as to remove mountains; if I have not love, I am nothing.

² and by which also you are saved, if you strictly adhere to it, unless indeed you believed in vain.

¹ Inconsiderate Galatians! who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth; you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ crucified was evidently represented among you?

⁴ Have you suffered so many things in vain? But if indeed in vain;

¹⁵ What was then your felicitation! For I bear you witness, that if it had been possible you would have pulled out your very eyes and given them to me. ¹⁶ Am I then become your enemy, because I tell you truth? ¹⁷ They affect a zeal for you; not in an honourable way; but they wish to exclude us, that you may be zealous for them. ¹⁸ Now it is honourable to be zealously affected towards a good man at all times, and not barely when I am present with you. ¹⁹ My dear children, for whom I again suffer pangs until Christ be formed in you ²⁰ but I wish I could this moment be with you and change the tone of my voice, for I am in doubt about you

¹⁷ that, by means of this belief, the Christ may dwell in your hearts; that you being rooted and grounded in love,

²³ provided you continue in this belief, grounded and settled, and are not moved away from the hope of the glad tidings which you have heard, which have been proclaimed to this whole creation under heaven, of which I Paul was made a minister.

⁷ rooted and built up in him, and firmly established in this belief, as you have been taught; abounding in it with thankfulness.

⁵ therefore not being able to bear any longer, I sent to know your faith, for fear the tempter might have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

¹⁹ having faith and a good conscience, which last some having discarded, they have, in respect to the faith, suffered shipwreck,

¹⁸ who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and subvert the belief of some. ¹⁹ Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth firm, having this inscription""The Lord knoweth them who are his;" and "Let every one who nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

³⁹ But we are not of them who draw back for perdition; but of them who believe for the attainment of life.

²⁶ For as the body without spirit is dead, so belief without works is dead also.

²⁰ For if alter fleeing from the pollutions of the world by an acknowledgment of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, any are again entangled and overcome by them, the last state of such persons is worse than the first.

²² But it hath happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog is returned to his vomit," and "the washed hog to its wallowing slough."

¹⁹ They went out from us; but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.

¹² They are hidden rocks in your love feasts. When they feast with you, they feed themselves without restraint. They are clouds without water, impelled by winds; autumnal trees without fruit, twice dead, and to be rooted up;

²⁴ No man can serve two masters: for he will either hate one and love the other; or he will attend to one and neglect the other. You cannot serve God and a worldly temperent ²⁵ Therefore I say to you, Be not anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; nor about your body, what you shall wear. Is not life a greater gift than food; and the body, than raiment?

¹⁹ but the cares of this world, and the delusion of riches, and inordinate desires of other things, crowd in and choke the word, so that it becometh unfruitful.

⁷ And some fell among thorns, and the thorns springing up with it, choaked it.

⁶ Then he spake this parable. A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he went seeking fruit on it, but found none. ⁷ Whereupon he said to the vine dresser, Behold this is the third year that I have come, seeking fruit on this fig tree, without finding any. Cut it down. Why doth it cumber the ground? ⁸ To which he replied, Master, let it alone one year longer, until I dig about it and dung it. ⁹ Perhaps it may bear fruit: if not; then cut it down.

¹³ No servant can serve two masters; for he will either hate one, and love the other; or he will attach himself to one, and despise the other: you cannot serve God and worldly prudence.

²⁶ And as it was in the days of Noe, so will it be in the days of the son of man. ²⁷ They ate; they drank; they married, and were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered the ark; and the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Just so it was also in the days of Lot. They ate; they drank; they bought; they sold; they planted; they built: ²⁹ but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. ³⁰ Even so will it be on the day when the son of man will be revealed.

²⁴ When Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, With what difficulty will men who have these things, enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ for it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

⁹ But they who determine to be rich, fall headlong into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful desires, which plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil; to gratify which, some have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁷ Charge them who are rich in this present state not to be high minded; not to trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God who imparteth to us richly all things for enjoyment;

¹⁰ For Demas, from a love for this world, hath forsaken me, and is gone to Thessalonica; Crescens, to Galatia; Titus, to Dalmatia.

¹⁵ Love not the world nor the things in the world. If any one loveth the world, the love of the Father is not in him ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the desire of the eyes, and the pomp of this life are not of the Father, but are of the world. ¹⁷ Now the world is passing away, and the desire thereof; but he who doth the will of God shall abide forever.

⁶ And the Lord will purify thy heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, that thou mayst live.

¹¹ And I will come out at his commands; for I have kept his ways, and will not turn aside from his commands, ¹² nor transgress in my bosom: indeed I have hid his words.

¹ Happy the man, who hath not walked by the counsel of the wicked; nor stood in the way of sinners; nor sat in the seat of the scornful. ² His delight will be in the law of the Lord only. And on his law he will meditate day and night. ³ And he will be like the tree planted by the streams of water, which will yield its fruit in due season, and its fruit shall not fall untimely. In all that he doth he shall be prospered.

¹⁰ Create in me, God, a pure heart; and renew a right spirit within me.

¹¹ I have hid thine oracles in my heart, that I may not sin against thee.

¹²⁷ For this cause I loved thy commandments more than gold or the topaz. ¹²⁸ For this cause I directed my course to all thy commandments: I hated every evil way. ¹²⁹ PE. Thy testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul sought them diligently.

¹ My son, forget not my laws; but let thy heart keep my commandments.

¹⁶ Bring them to an end. But let Thy word be to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart. Because I am called by Thy name, O Lord Almighty;

³³ For this, saith the Lord, is my covenant which I will make with the house of Israel; after those days, saith the Lord, I will adapt my laws to their understanding and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.

²⁹ And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come and burn this city with fire; and they will burn those houses on the tops of which they have offered incense to Baal and poured out libations to strange gods, to provoke me.

²⁶ I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you: I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and give you a heart of flesh: ²⁷ And I will put my spirit in you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and to keep my judgments and practise them.

¹³ But he who persevereth to the end shall be saved.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good. And the bad man out of the bad treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is bad. For from the overflowing of the heart the mouth speaketh.

²⁸ Whereupon he said, Nay, rather happy they who hear the word of God and keep it.

¹⁵ If you love me keep my commandments,

²¹ He who hath my commandments and keepeth them; he. it is who loveth me. And he who loveth me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. ²² Judas [not the Iscariot] saith to him, Master, How is it that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world?" ²³ Jesus in reply, said to him, If any one love me, he will keep my word and my Father will love him; and we will come to him and make an abode with him. ²⁴ He who doth not love me, doth not keep my words. Now the word which you hear is not mine only, but the Fathers who sent me.

¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you shall continue in my love; as I have kept my Father's commandments and continue in his love.

⁷ to them who by perseverance in well-doing, seek for glory and honour, and incorruption [he will grant] everlasting life;

²² But being now set free from sin and become servants of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and in the end, everlasting life.

⁴ So you also, my brethren, are become dead to the law by means of the body of the Christ, that you may be for another, who is raised from the dead, that we may bring forth fruit to God.

¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, good doth not dwell. For to will is present with me, but the performance of what is good, I do not find. ¹⁹ The circumcision is nothing, and the uncircumcision is nothing, in comparison with keeping the commandments of God.

²² But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ meekness, temperance; against such things there is no law. ²⁴ Now they who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. ²⁵ If we live by spirit let us walk by spirit. ²⁶ Let us not be vain glorious, provoking one another, envying one another.

⁸ For by grace you are saved by means of this belief. And even this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.

¹¹ filled with fruits of righteousness, which are by means of Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.

¹³ Brethren, I do not reckon myself to have laid hold on it, but one thing [I do], forgetting the things which are behind, and intent on the things before, ¹⁴ I press forward to the mark, for the prize of the call of God from above by Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Let as many of us therefore as are full grown, have our minds bent on this; and if any of you are otherwise minded, when God shall reveal this to you,

⁶ which is come to you as it hath also to all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it doth among you, from the day you heard and acknowledged the favour of God in truth,

¹¹ Now we earnestly desire that every one of you would shew the same diligent concern for the full assurance of this hope to the end: ¹² that you may not become languid, but imitators of them who through faith and long suffering inherit the promises.

³⁶ For you must persevere, that when you have performed the will of God, you may receive the promised reward.

⁴ Let patience then have a full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, deficient in nothing.

¹⁶ Be not led astray, my beloved brethren: ¹⁷ Every good donation, and every perfect gift, is from above, and cometh down from the father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will he hath impregnated us with a word of truth, that we may be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

²² and be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ²³ For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a glass. ²⁴ For having viewed himself, and gone away, he instantly forgot what manner of person he was. ²⁵ But whosoever hath looked carefully into the perfect law of this liberty, and continued therein; he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of work, shall by his doing be happy.

⁷ Wherefore be ye, brethren, patient till the coming of the Lord. Behold the husbandman expecteth the precious fruits of the earth, waiting for them with patience, until it hath received the former and the latter rain. ⁸ Wait ye also with patience. Strengthen your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is near.

¹ Therefore laying aside all malice, and all deceit, and every kind of hypocrisy, envy and slander, ² like newborn babes desire the pure milk of the word that by it you may thrive. ³ Now by this we know that we have known him, if we keep his commandments.

¹⁵ A lamp is not lighted and put under the corn measure, but on the stand, that it may give light to all the family. ¹⁶ Thus let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven.

²¹ Then he said to them, Is a lamp brought to be put under the corn measure, or under the bed? Is it not that it may be set on a stand? ²² For there is nothing hidden which shall not be discovered, nor any thing laid up in secret, but that it may be brought to light.

³³ No one having lighted a lamp putteth it in a secret place, or under the corn measure, but on a stand, that they who come in may see the light.

¹⁸ to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of satan to God, that they may receive a remission of sins and an inheritance among them who are sanctified by the belief in me.

¹⁵ that you may be blameless and sincere, spotless children of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, amongst whom shine ye forth as lights in the world, ¹⁶ displaying the word of life, that I may have matter of boasting for the day of Christ, that I did not run in vain, nor labour in vain,

²⁰ With respect to the hidden meaning of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks; the seven stars are the angels of the seven congregations and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven congregations.

⁴ These are the two olive trees and the two lamps which stand before the God of the earth.

¹⁴ That God will bring the whole work into judgment in every case not taken notice of, whether it be good or whether it be evil.

²⁶ Therefore be not afraid of them; for there is nothing hid, which shall not be revealed; nor anything secret, which shall not be known.

²² For there is nothing hidden which shall not be discovered, nor any thing laid up in secret, but that it may be brought to light.

² for there is nothing concealed which shall not be disclosed; nor any thing hid, which shall not be known. ³ Because what you have said in the dark, will be heard in the light; and what you have whispered in closets will be proclaimed on the house tops;

⁵ So pass no judgment prematurely, until the Lord come, who will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and expose to view the counsels of the hearts, and then the praise for every one will be from God.

⁴⁶ Attend with your heart to all these words which I this day testify to you, and which you are to give in charge to your children, that they may keep, and perform all the words of this law; ⁴⁷ for this is not a vain thing for you; for it is your life; and, for the sake of this word, you shall prolong your days in the land to which you are going, to cross the Jordan to take possession.

² thine ear will hearken to wisdom; and thou wilt apply thy heart to understanding, and transmit it for instruction to thy son. ³ For if thou wilt call upon wisdom: and utter thy voice for understanding; ⁴ if thou wilt seek for it as silver; and search for it as for treasures; ⁵ then thou shalt understand the fear of the Lord; and find the knowledge of God.

¹² There is a way which seemeth right to a man; but the end of it is at the bottom of Hades.

²² Many will say to me on that day Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name cast out demons, and in thy name done many miracles, ²³ to whom I will then declare, I never acknowledged you; Depart from me ye who work iniquity.

¹² For to him who improveth, more shall be given and he shall abound: but from him who improveth not, even that which he hath shall be taken.

²⁹ For to every one who improveth more shall be given, and he shall abound; but from him who improveth not, even what he hath shall be taken away:

²³ If any one hath ears to hear, let him hear. ²⁴ Moreover he said to them, Consider what you hear. With whatever measure you deal out, you shall receive; and to you who are attentive more shall be given. ²⁵ For to him who improveth, more shall be given; but from him who improveth not, even what he hath shall be taken away.

¹⁴ Now when you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by the prophet Daniel, erected where it ought not [ Reader attend!] then let them who are in Judea flee to the mountains;

⁴⁴ Give diligent attention to these words; for the son of man will soon be delivered up into the hands of men.

²⁰ Whereupon God said to him; Fool, this very night this soul of thine will be demanded of thee. Whose then will those things be which thou hast provided? ²¹ Thus let every one [say] to himself who is heaping up treasure and is not rich for God.

² So having called him, he said to him, What is this that I hear of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship; for thou canst no longer be steward. ³ Thereupon the steward said within himself, What am I to do, since my lord taketh from me the stewardship; I am not able to dig: to beg I am ashamed. ⁴ I am resolved what to do, that when I am removed from the stewardship, I may be received into their houses.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man who was clad with purple and cotton robes, and who feasted daily in a splendid manner. ²⁰ And there was a certain poor man, named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ desirous indeed to be fed with the crumbs which fell from his table: and moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² At length this poor man died, and was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom. And the rich man died also, and was buried. ²³ And in the mansion of the dead having lifted up his eyes, being in torment, he seeth Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ Whereupon he cried and said, Father, Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life time; and Lazarus in like manner, his evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

²⁶ for I tell you, said he, that to every one who improveth more shall be given; but from him who improveth not, even what he hath shall be taken away.

³³ Therefore I sent to thee immediately and thou hast done well in coming. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God, to hear all that God hath given thee in charge.

¹¹ Now these were of a more generous disposition than those of Thessalonica. They received the word with all readiness, daily examining the scriptures whether these things were so,

³ For by virtue of the favour which is granted to me, I charge every one who is among you not to have an overweening opinion of himself, but to bend his thoughts to the attaining of a sober and modest demeanour, as God hath distributed a portion of faith to every one.

¹⁸ Whosoever you are, let no one deceive himself. If am one among you seemeth to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.

² If then any one thinketh that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

¹ Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, if I have not love, I am but a sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal; ² and though I have a gift of prophesy and understand all the mysteries and all this knowledge; and though I have all that faith, so as to remove mountains; if I have not love, I am nothing. ³ And though I distribute all my substance to feed the poor, and deliver up my body to be burned, if I have not love, it profiteth me nothing.

³⁷ If any one be, in reality, a prophet, or a spiritual man, let him acknowledge that what I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

⁴ Though, with regard to my having a confidence even in flesh, if any other thinketh that he hath a confidence in flesh, I have greater pretensions

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: ²⁰ for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. ²¹ Therefore having thrown off all the filth and scum of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save your souls; ²² and be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ²³ For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a glass. ²⁴ For having viewed himself, and gone away, he instantly forgot what manner of person he was. ²⁵ But whosoever hath looked carefully into the perfect law of this liberty, and continued therein; he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of work, shall by his doing be happy. ²⁶ If any one among you thinketh to be religious without bridling his tongue, he is but deceiving his heart. Such a one's religion is vain.

⁴⁶ Now, while he was speaking to the people, lo! His mother and his brethren were standing without, desiring to speak with him. ⁴⁷ And one said to him, lo! thy mother and thy brethren are standing without, desiring to speak with thee. ⁴⁸ In reply to which he said to him who told him, who is my mother? And who are my brethren? ⁴⁹ Then, stretching out his hand towards his disciples, he said, Behold my mother, and my brethren! ⁵⁰ for whoever will do the will of my father who is in heaven, the same is my brother and sister and mother.

²¹ And when they who were just from it, heard, and were going out to restrain it, [for some said, He is distracted,

³¹ therefore his brethren, and his mother come, and having stood without, sent for him, ³² as the multitude sat around him. And when they said to him, Behold thy mother and thy brethren are Who had just come in from the crowd at the gate, without, inquiring for thee, ³³ he answered them, saying, Who is my mother? And who are my brethren? ³⁴ Then looking round on them who sat about him, he saith, Behold my mother and my brethren! ³⁵ For whosoever will do the will of God, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary and his brethren, James and Joses and Simon and Judas? ⁵⁶ And his sisters, are they not all among us"? Whence then hath this man all these things?

³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? So they were stumbled at him.

³ therefore his brethren said to him, Depart hence and go to Judea that thy disciples may see the works which thou dost. ⁴ For one who seeketh to be known publicly, doth any thing in secret. Since thou dost these things, shew thyself to the world. ⁵ [For even his brethren did not believe in him.] ⁶ Thereupon Jesus saith to them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.

⁵ Have we not a power to take along with us a sister, wife as well as the other apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

¹⁹ But I did not see any other of the apostles, save James the brother of the Lord.

²¹ Not every one who saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he who doeth the will of my father who is in heaven. ²² Many will say to me on that day Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name cast out demons, and in thy name done many miracles, ²³ to whom I will then declare, I never acknowledged you; Depart from me ye who work iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore whoever heareth these words of mine and putteth them in practice, him I will compare to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock. ²⁵ When the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, it did not fall, because it was founded on the rock. ²⁶ But whoever heareth these words of mine, and doth not put them in practice, may be compared to a foolish man, who built his house on the sand.

⁵ While he was yet speaking, behold! a bright cloud overshadowed them; and lo! from the cloud, a voice, saying, This is my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye him.

⁴⁵ And he will answer them, saying, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as you have not done this to any, the least of these, you have not done it to me.

¹⁰ Then Jesus saith to them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they may go to Galilee; there they shall see me.

²⁷ As he was thus speaking, it happened that a woman among the crowd, raising her voice, said to him, Happy the womb which bore thee and the breasts which thou hast sucked! ²⁸ Whereupon he said, Nay, rather happy they who hear the word of God and keep it.

²⁸ Thereupon they said to him, What must we do that we may work the works of God? ²⁹ Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God that you believe in him whom he hath sent.

¹⁷ If you know these things, happy are you if you practise them.

¹⁴ You are my friends, if you do what I command you. ¹⁵ I no longer call you servants; because the servant doth not know what his master doth. But I have called you friends, because I have made known to you all that I heard from my Father.

¹⁷ Jesus saith to her, Cling not to me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father: But go to my brethren and tell them, I am about to ascend to my Father and to your Father, and to my God and your God.

¹⁶ So that henceforth we know no one after the flesh. Nay though we indeed knew Christ after the flesh, yet we now know him so no more.

¹⁸ and be to you a father, and you shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."

¹¹ For both he who sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, ¹² saying, "I will declare thy name to my brethren, In the midst of a congregation I will praise thee." ¹³ And, again: "I will trust in him;" and, again: "Here am I and the children whom God hath given me."

²² and be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that every one who practiseth righteousness is born of him.

²² and whatever we ask we obtain from him, because we keep his commandments, and do the things which are pleasing in his sight. ²³ Now this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his son Jesus Christ and love one another, as he hath commanded us.

¹¹ Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who doth good is of God. But he who doth evil, hath not seen God.

¹⁸ When Jesus saw great crowds around him, he gave orders to go over to the opposite shore;

²³ Then having gone aboard the vessel, his disciples followed him. ²⁴ And behold there came on a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the vessel was covered with the waves, and he was asleep. ²⁵ Thereupon his disciples came and awoke him, saying, Master, save us! we are perishing. ²⁶ And he said to them, Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and a great calm ensued. ²⁷ And the men in amaze, said, "What sort of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?"

²² Then Jesus immediately constrained his disciples to embark, and cross over to the other side before him, while he dismissed the multitudes.

³⁵ And the same day, in the evening, he saith to them. Let us cross over to the other side. ³⁶ So, leaving the multitude, they take him along with them as he was on board. And there were some other small vessels with him. ³⁷ And there arose a violent storm of wind, and the waves beat into the vessel, so that it would soon be full. ³⁸ Now he was in the stem, asleep on a pillow. And they awake him, and say, Teacher, carest thou not that we perish? ³⁹ Thereupon he arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. ⁴⁰ Then he said to them, Why are you so much afraid. How is it that you have not faith? ⁴¹ And they were exceedingly terrified, and said one to another, Who in reality is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

²¹ And when Jesus had repassed in the vessel to the other side, a great multitude gathered about him, and he continued by the sea side.

⁴⁵ Immediately after this, he constrained his disciples to embark, and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida; while he dismissed the people.

¹³ So, leaving them, he embarked again, and went to the other side.

¹ And it came to pass when the people were pressing upon him to hear the word of God, as he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,

²³ And as they were sailing he fell asleep; and a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were filled, and in danger;

¹ After these things Jesus went away. On the coast of the sea, that of Galilee, that of Tiberias,

²³ awake: why sleepest thou, O Lord? Arise and cast us not off forever.

³ The rivers, Lord, lifted up; the rivers lifted up their voices. ⁴ By reason of the roaring of many waters; the mountainous billows of the sea are wonderful. The Lord on high is wonderful;

²³ As for them who go to sea in ships, and traffick on the mighty waters; ²⁴ they see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep. ²⁵ He spake, and up rose a tempestuous wind: and its waves are lifted high; ²⁶ they mount up to the heavens: then down they descend into the depths; with perils, their souls are melted; ²⁷ they reel and stagger like one drunk, and all their skill is swallowed up. ²⁸ Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction, and he brought them out of their distresses. ²⁹ He rebuked the tempest, and it stopt in a still calm; and its waves were lulled to silence. ³⁰ And they were glad, because they were at rest. And he conducted them to their desired port.

² had not the Lord been on our side, when men rose up against us; ³ they might have swallowed us up alive; when their wrath was kindled against us, ⁴ the water might have overwhelmed us. Our soul hath passed through a torrent.

⁸ Fire, hail, snow, ice, tempestuous wind, which execute his commands!

⁹ Awake, awake, Jerusalem! and clothe thyself with the strength of thine arm. Awake as at the beginning of day. ¹⁰ Art thou not as the generation of old, which dried up the sea; the swelling water of the deep? Which made the depths of the sea a road for the delivered and redeemed to pass?

¹¹ [J] thou afflicted and storm beaten! Art thou not comforted? Behold I am preparing for thee carbuncles for thy building stones, and the sapphire for thy foundations;

²² One day Jesus having gone on board a vessel with his disciples, said to them, Let us cross over to the other side of the lake. So they set sail.

¹⁴ But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, which is called Euroclydon, ¹⁵ and the vessel being hurried away and not able to look up to the wind, we were forced to let her drive. ¹⁶ And running close under a little island called Clauda, we had much ado to secure the boat: ¹⁷ Having hoisted this in they used helps, undergirding the ship. And fearing lest they should run on the quicksands, they lowered the sail and so were driven. ¹⁸ But as we were exceedingly tossed by the tempest, they on the next day threw overboard some of the cargo. ¹⁹ And on the third day we with our own hands threw overboard the tackling of the ship. ²⁰ Now as neither sun nor stars appeared for several days, and the tempest still bore hard upon us, all hopes of escaping were at last taken away.

⁷ Thou causest the cavity of the sea to rage; the billows thereof to roar.

¹ For the conclusion. Respecting them who are to be changed. By David. Save me, God; for waters have broken in on my soul. ² I am sunk down into deep mire, and there is no support beneath. I am come into the depth of the sea, and a tempest hath overwhelmed me.

⁶ Is the abyss like a garment to be its covering; are waters to stand above the mountains? ⁷ At thy rebuke they shall flee; at the peal of thy thunder they will tremble. ⁸ They ascend mountains, they go down vallies; to the place which thou hast founded for them. ⁹ Thou has set a bound which they shall not pass; nor shall they return to cover the earth.

²⁵ He spake, and up rose a tempestuous wind: and its waves are lifted high; ²⁶ they mount up to the heavens: then down they descend into the depths; with perils, their souls are melted; ²⁷ they reel and stagger like one drunk, and all their skill is swallowed up. ²⁸ Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction, and he brought them out of their distresses. ²⁹ He rebuked the tempest, and it stopt in a still calm; and its waves were lulled to silence.

³ The pangs of death encompassed me; the perils of Hades found me: I met with distress and sorrow: ⁴ thereupon I invoked the name of the Lord; Lord deliver my soul.

⁴ I looked to the right; and observed that none was there, who knew me. Flight was cut off from me; and is he not earnestly seeking my life? ⁵ To thee, O Lord, I cried and said, Thou art my hope; my portion in the land of the living.

² Why, when I came, was there no man? And why, when I called, did none answer? Is my hand unable to save? Or have I no power to rescue? Behold with my rebuke I can dry up the sea, and make the rivers a desert, so that the fishes thereof shall shrivel for want of water, and die for thirst. I can clothe the heaven with darkness, and make its covering like sackcloth.

²² Will you not fear me, saith the Lord, nor be struck with awe at the presence of me who have by an everlasting decree, made sand a boundary to the ocean, so that it shall not pass it. Though it be tossed with a tempest, it shall not prevail; though the waves thereof roar, they shall not overpass it.

⁵⁴ Water was poured above upon my head. I said, I am cast off. ⁵⁵ I called on thy name, O Lord, out of the deepest dungeon. ⁵⁶ Thou hast heard my voice; stop not thine ear against my supplication.

⁴ When he rebuketh the sea he maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel are diminished and the bloom of Libanus languished.

³⁰ But perceiving the wind strong, he was afraid, and, beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Master, save me.

³⁹ Whereupon standing over her, he rebuked the fever and it left her; and she arose immediately and waited upon them.

⁵ Upon which Simon, answering, said to him, Master, we have been toiling all night, and have caught nothing. However, at thy word, I will let down the net.

² and Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding. ³ And the wine having fallen short, the mother of Jesus saith to him, They have no wine. ⁴ Jesus saith to her, Woman, what hast thou to do with me? My hour is not yet come. ⁵ His mother saith to the waiters, Do whatever he shall bid you. ⁶ Now there were six water pots of stone, containing two or three measures apiece, placed there for the Jewish rites of purifying.

⁹ but had in ourselves the sentence of death, that we might not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead, ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will still deliver us,

⁹ Then God said, "Let the water which is below the heaven be gathered into one receptacle and let the dry land appear." ¹⁰ And it was so. The waters which were below the heaven were gathered into their several collections, and the dry land appeared. And God called the dry land, earth; and the collections of the waters he called, seas. And God saw that it was good.

¹² Then Joshua spoke to the Lord, on the day God delivered up the Amorite into the hand of Israel. When he had discomfited them at Gabaon, and they were routed before the children of Israel, Joshua said, Let the sun stand over against Gabaon, and the moon over against the valley of Ailon. ¹³ So the sun stood still, and the moon in its station; until God executed vengeance on their enemies, the sun stood in the midst of heaven; it advanced not to the setting, to the end of a day. ¹⁴ So that there never was such a day before, nor after it such an instance of God's hearkening to man.

⁸ It was I who shut up the sea with gates, when it rushed eagerly from its mother's womb. ⁹ It was I who made a cloud its cloathing; and thick darkness its swaddling bands. ¹⁰ It was I who set bounds to it; surrounded it with bars and gates;

²⁹ and when he secured the fountains of the earth below; And when he made the foundations of the earth strong:

⁴ Who hath ascended up to heaven and come down? Who hath collected the winds in his bosom? Who hath infolded the water in a mantle? Who hath a dominion over all the ends of the earth? What is his name? or what the name of his sons?

³⁰ Now if God thus arrayeth the herbage which is today in the field, and tomorrow to be cast into a furnace, will he not much more clothe you, O ye mistrustful?

²⁶ And he said to them, Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and a great calm ensued.

³¹ And Jesus immediately stretched forth his hand and took hold of him, saying, Distrustful man, why didst thou doubt?

²⁰ And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief. For verily I say to you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you might say to that mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it would remove; and nothing would be impossible to you:

²⁸ Now if God doth thus clothe the herbage, which is in the field today, and tomorrow is cast into a furnace, how much more will he clothe you, O distrustful men?

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, Did I not tell thee, if thou wouldst believe thou shouldst see the glory of God?

²⁸ And when he arrived at the opposite shore in the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two demoniacs coming out of the tombs, so furious that nobody durst pass that way. ²⁹ And instantly they screamed, saying, What hast thou to do with us, Jesus son of God! Art thou come hither before the time to torment us. ³⁰ Now there was at some distance from them a herd of many swine, feeding: ³¹ and the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, permit us to go into that herd of swine. ³² And he said to them, Go. Thereupon they went out and entered into the herd of swine. And instantly the whole herd ran violently down a precipice into the sea, and perished in the waters. ³³ And they who fed them fled; and having gone to the city, they told all the circumstances, including the case of the demoniacs. ³⁴ And presently all the city came out to meet Jesus, and having seen him they intreated him to. withdraw out of their territory.

¹ And when they arrived at the other side, in the country of the Gaderenes, ² just as he was stepping out of the vessel, there met him a man coming out from among the tombs, with an unclean spirit, ³ who made his abode in the tombs, and whom no one could confine; no, not even with chains. ⁴ For he had often been bound with fetters and chains; but he burst the chains and broke in pieces the fetters, so that none could tame him. ⁵ And he was continually, night and day, on the mountains and in the tombs, screaming, and cutting himself with stones. ⁶ But upon seeing Jesus at a distance, he ran, and prostrating himself, ⁷ cried with a loud voice, saying, What hast thou to do with me, Jesus, son of the most high God?" I conjure thee by God not to torment me? ⁸ For he had said to him, Go out of the man, thou unclean spirit. ⁹ Then he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion; for we are many, ¹⁰ and earnestly intreated him not to send them out of that country. ¹¹ Now there was there on the mountains, a great herd of swine feeding, ¹² and all the demons besought him, saying, Send us to the swine that we may enter into them. ¹³ And Jesus immediately permitted them. Whereupon the unclean spirits, having gone out, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down a precipice into the sea, [now they were about two thousand] and were drowned in the sea. ¹⁴ And they who fed the swine fled, and told the news in town and country. And the people came out to see what had happened. ¹⁵ And when they came to Jesus and saw the demoniac; him who had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind, they were terrified. ¹⁶ And when the eye witnesses told them what was done to the demoniac, and respecting the swine, ¹⁷ they began to intreat him to withdraw from their territories. ¹⁸ And as he was going on board the vessel the late demoniac besought him that he might go with him. ¹⁹ But Jesus did not permit him, but saith to him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them what the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. ²⁰ So he departed, and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him. And they were all amazed.

¹⁶ And every one who, in the open field, toucheth one slain, or dead, or a human bone, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.

²⁴ And having stripped off his upper garments, he prophesied before them, and lay uncovered that whole day, and the whole night. For this cause they said, Is Saul also among the prophets?

⁴ They sleep in tombs and in caverns for the purpose of dreaming: they eat swine's flesh, and the broth of sacrifices; all their vessels are polluted;

² just as he was stepping out of the vessel, there met him a man coming out from among the tombs, with an unclean spirit, ³ who made his abode in the tombs, and whom no one could confine; no, not even with chains. ⁴ For he had often been bound with fetters and chains; but he burst the chains and broke in pieces the fetters, so that none could tame him. ⁵ And he was continually, night and day, on the mountains and in the tombs, screaming, and cutting himself with stones.

¹ In that day God will bring his holy sword, even his great and powerful sword, upon the dragon, the flying serpent; Upon the dragon, the crooked serpent; he will slay the dragon.

²⁹ And instantly they screamed, saying, What hast thou to do with us, Jesus son of God! Art thou come hither before the time to torment us.

²⁴ saying, Forbear! what hast thou to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know who thou art; the Holy One of God. ²⁵ Thereupon Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent and go out of him. ²⁶ And the unclean spirit, having convulsed the man, and screamed with a loud voice, went out of him. ²⁷ At which all were so amazed, that they asked one another, saying, What is this? What new teaching is this? For with authority he commandeth even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.

⁶ But upon seeing Jesus at a distance, he ran, and prostrating himself, ⁷ cried with a loud voice, saying, What hast thou to do with me, Jesus, son of the most high God?" I conjure thee by God not to torment me? ⁸ For he had said to him, Go out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

³³ And there was in the synagogue a man, who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried with a loud voice, ³⁴ saying, Hah! What hast thou to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth! Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art. The holy one of God. ³⁵ Thereupon Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent and go out of him. And the demon having thrown the man in the midst, went out of him without hurting him. ³⁶ And they were all amazed, and said to one another, What is the meaning of this, that with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they go out?

³⁷ all the people of the neighbouring country of the Gadarenes entreated him to depart from them. Because they were struck with great terror, he therefore going on board the vessel, set out on his return. ³⁸ Now the man, out of whom the demons had gone, begged to be with him. But Jesus dismissed him, saying,

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as we were going to the oratory, we were met by a certain female slave who had a spirit of Python, and who brought her masters much gain by divining. ¹⁷ This girl, following Paul and us, cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God. They are telling us the way of salvation. ¹⁸ And this she did for many days. At length Paul, being troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee, in the name of Jesus Christ, to go out of her. And at that instant it went out.

¹⁹ Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well. The demons also believe and tremble.

⁴ For if God spared not angels who sinned, but confining them in Tartarus, chains of darkness, delivered them up to be kept for judgment

⁸ He who practiseth sin is of the devil, because the devil sinneth from the beginning; for this [purpose] the son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

¹ Then I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the bottomless gulf and a great chain in his hand; ² and he laid hold on the dragon, the old serpent which is the Devil and Satan and bound him a thousand years ³ and cast him into the bottomless gulf and shut him up, and sealed it on him that he might not lead the nations astray any more until the thousand years were ended. And after that he must be loosed for a short time.

¹⁰ And the Devil who was seducing them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are; and they shall be tormented day and night for the ages of the ages.

⁸ For he had said to him, Go out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

²⁰ So he was brought to him. And soon as he saw Jesus, the spirit threw him into convulsions; and, falling on the ground, he rolled about and foamed. ²¹ And Jesus asked his father, How long since this befel him? And he said, From his childhood. ²² And oft times it hath cast him into fire, and into waters to destroy him. But if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us and help us. ²³ Thereupon Jesus said to him, With regard to this canst thou believe? All things are possible for him who believeth. ²⁴ Upon which the father of the child immediately cried out, and with tears said, I do believe: Help, O sir, my unbelief. ²⁵ And when Jesus saw that the people were crowding upon him, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee; Go out of him; and enter no more into him; ²⁶ and the demon having screamed, and severely convulsed him, went out. And he was like one dead. So that many said, He is dead.

³⁹ And behold a spirit seizeth him, and instantly he screameth; and it convulseth him with foam, and hardly departeth from him, when it hath bruised him.

⁴² Bring thy son hither. And as he was coming, the .demon dashed him on the ground and threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and cured the child, and delivered him to his father.

¹² so that handkerchiefs and aprons were carried from his body to them who were sick, and the diseases were removed from them, and evil spirits went out of them. ¹³ Upon this some of the strolling Jewish exorcists attempted to name the name of the Lord Jesus, over them who had these evil spirits, saying, "We adjure you by that Jesus whom Paul proclaimeth" ¹⁴ Now there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this. ¹⁵ Upon which the evil spirit in reply said, Jesus I know, and I have some knowledge of Paul: but who are ye? ¹⁶ Then the man, in whom was the evil spirit, springing upon them, and getting a mastery over them, prevailed against them so that they fled out of his house naked and wounded.

²⁵ with meekness instructing opposers: perhaps God may grant them a change of mind so as to acknowledge the truth, ²⁶ and they who have been captivated by the devil for his pleasure, may rouse and escape from his snare.

⁵³ Or dost thou think that I cannot now address ray father, who can send to my assistance, more than twelve legions of angels?

⁹ Then he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion; for we are many,

² and by certain women who had been delivered from evil spirits and diseases, particularly Mary, called Magdalene, Out of whom had gone seven demons;

¹¹ But put forth thine hand and touch all that he hath, he will indeed openly renounce thee.

⁵ Only put forth thy hand, and touch his bones and his flesh, he will indeed openly renounce thee.

⁴¹ Then he will say to them on his left, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the fire which is everlasting; that prepared for the devil and his angels!

²⁸ who upon seeing Jesus, screamed and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, What hast thou to do with me, Jesus son of the Most High God. I beseech thee, torment me not.

¹⁰ that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those beneath the earth; ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father.

¹ And when the fifth angel sounded, I saw a star fallen from heaven on the earth. And to it was given the key of the pit of the bottomless gulf, 2 and it opened the pit of the bottomless gulf; and a smoke ascended out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit.

¹¹ and they have a king over them the angel of the bottomless gulf, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.

⁷ And when they shall be performing their testimony the beast which ascendeth out of the bottomless gulf will come to battle with them, and overcome them, and kill them,

⁸ The beast which thou sawest was and is not and is soon to ascend out of the bottomless gulf and go to destruction; and the inhabitants of the earth, whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will wonder when they see the beast, because it was and is not although indeed it is.

²⁰ And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet who did these signs before him by which he led astray them who had received the mark of the beast, and them who worshipped his image. Both these were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone;

¹⁴ And death and the mansion of the dead were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And whoever was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

⁷ and the swine, though it hath a parted hoof, yet because it doth not chew the cud, it is unclean to you.

²² And the Lord said to him, How? And he said, I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt deceive him and actually prevail. Go and do so.

¹⁰ Hast thou not made a hedge about all that he hath, abroad and at home, and about all that belong to him round about, and blessed the works of his hands, and multiplied his cattle on the earth?

¹² Then the Lord said to Satan, Behold all that he hath I deliver into thine hand; but himself thou must not touch. So Satan went out from the Lord,

⁶ Then the Lord said to Satan, Behold I deliver him up to thee, only preserve his life.

¹¹ Once God hath spoken; these two things I have heard: That strength belongeth to God,

³ As for the wicked man, who sacrificeth to me a young bull: he is one who slayeth a dog: and though he offereth me fine flour: it will be as the blood of swine. Though he offereth incense for a memorial, he is as a blasphemer. As they have chosen their own ways: and their soul hath delighted in their abominations:

³⁰ Now there was at some distance from them a herd of many swine, feeding: ³¹ and the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, permit us to go into that herd of swine. ³² And he said to them, Go. Thereupon they went out and entered into the herd of swine. And instantly the whole herd ran violently down a precipice into the sea, and perished in the waters. ³³ And they who fed them fled; and having gone to the city, they told all the circumstances, including the case of the demoniacs.

¹¹ Now there was there on the mountains, a great herd of swine feeding, ¹² and all the demons besought him, saying, Send us to the swine that we may enter into them. ¹³ And Jesus immediately permitted them. Whereupon the unclean spirits, having gone out, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down a precipice into the sea, [now they were about two thousand] and were drowned in the sea.

¹¹ Jesus answered, Thou couldst have no power at all against me, if it were not given thee from above; therefore he who delivered me up to thee hath the greater sin.

⁴ You, children, are of God, and have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

⁷ And when the thousand years are ended Satan will be let loose from his prison

²² One day Jesus having gone on board a vessel with his disciples, said to them, Let us cross over to the other side of the lake. So they set sail. ²³ And as they were sailing he fell asleep; and a storm of wind came down on the lake, and they were filled, and in danger;

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and bent upon executing the desires of your father. He was a manslayer from the beginning, and did .not abide in the truth. Because there is no truth in him, when he speaketh falsehood he speaketh what is. natural to him, for he is a liar, and the father of it.

⁸ be sober, be watchful: because your adversary the devil is walking about, like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour,

³³ And they who fed them fled; and having gone to the city, they told all the circumstances, including the case of the demoniacs.

¹¹ Now while they were going, behold some of the guard, having come to the city, told the chief priests all that had happened.

¹⁴ And they who fed the swine fled, and told the news in town and country. And the people came out to see what had happened.

¹⁶ Then the man, in whom was the evil spirit, springing upon them, and getting a mastery over them, prevailed against them so that they fled out of his house naked and wounded. ¹⁷ And this was known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all. And the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

²⁴ [a] Can any one take spoils from a giant? [b] And if any one captivate unjustly shall he be safe. ²⁵ For thus saith the Lord, When one captivateth a giant he shall take spoils. [a] But can one take from a mighty man and be safe? [b] But it is I who vindicateth thy cause, and I will deliver thy children.

¹² therefore he shall inherit many and divide the spoils of the strong. [p] Because his soul was delivered up to death and he was numbered among transgressors and bore away the sins of many and on account of their iniquities was delivered up;

¹⁵ And when they came to Jesus and saw the demoniac; him who had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind, they were terrified.

⁴⁶ And after three days, they found him in the temple, silting in the midst of the teachers, and hearing them, and asking them questions."

²⁷ just as he was landing he was met by a man of the city who had been long possessed by demons, and who wore no clothes, nor abode in any house, but in the tombs;

³⁹ Now she had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the feet of Jesus and heard his discourse.

¹⁷ At length, coming to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father have bread enough and to spare, while I am perishing with hunger?

³ I indeed am a Jew, born at Tarsus, in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, instructed accurately at the feet of Gamaliel in the law of our fathers, being a zealous worshipper of God as you all are at this day;

¹⁴ As the children therefore were partakers of flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same in order that he might, by his death, put a stop to the operation of him who hath the power of death, that is the devil; ¹⁵ and deliver from bondage them who were all their lives liable to the fear of death.

²⁴ And the fame of him spread through all Syria; and they brought to him all their sick, seized and tormented with various distempers"demoniacs, and lunatics and paralytics, and he cured them.

²⁵ Now therefore let us not die, for this great fire will consume us, if we continue any longer to hear the voice of the Lord our God; and we shall die.

²⁰ and the men of Baithsamus said, Who will be able to pass by before the Lord, the holy God? And, To whom shall the ark of the Lord go up from us.

⁸ Now David was disheartened because the Lord had broke out upon Oza, and that place is to this day called Breach of Oza; ⁹ and David was afraid of the Lord that day, saying, How shall the ark of the Lord come to me?

¹⁸ Upon which she said to Elias, What hast thou to do with me, man of God? Art thou come to me to bring my sins into remembrance and cause my son to die?

¹⁴ Yet he saith to the Lord, Depart from me, I desire not to know thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him: and what the advantage, that we should wait on him?

³⁴ And presently all the city came out to meet Jesus, and having seen him they intreated him to. withdraw out of their territory.

¹⁷ they began to intreat him to withdraw from their territories.

⁸ Upon seeing this, Simon Peter prostrated himself at the knees of Jesus, and said, Depart from me, for I, O Lord, am a sinful man.

⁵ And wherever they will not receive you, when you are leaving that city, shake off the dust from your feet, for a testimony against them.

⁵⁶ For the son of man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. So they went to another village.

¹⁰ But whatever city you enter, when they do not receive you, go out into the streets thereof and say, ¹¹ The very dust of this city of yours which cleaveth to us, we wipe off for you: nevertheless, know this, that the reign of God hath come nigh unto you.

¹⁶ He who hearkeneth to you, hearkeneth to me: and he who rejecteth you, rejecteth me; and he who rejecteth me, rejecteth him who sent me.

³⁹ they came and comforted them, and having taken them out, intreated them to leave the city.

²⁵ And when you come to the land which the Lord will give you as he hath spoken, you must keep up this religious service. ²⁶ And if your children say to you, What is the meaning of this religious service? ²⁷ then you shall say to them, It is the sacrifice of the Passover of the Lord; because he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. Upon which the people bowed down and worshipped;

⁸ And on that day thou shalt tell thy son and say, This is on the account of what the Lord God did for me, when I came out of Egypt. ⁹ And it shall be to thee for a sign on thy hand and for a memorial before thy eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in thy mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord thy God hath brought thee out of Egypt;

¹⁴ And if at any time hereafter, thy son should ask thee saying, What is the meaning of this? thou shalt say to him, Because with a strong hand the Lord brought us out of the land of Egypt; from the house of bondage; ¹⁵ and, when Pharao hardened himself against sending us away, the Lord slew every first born in the land of Egypt, both the first born of men and the first born of cattle, therefore I sacrifice all firstlings; all the males to the Lord: and every male first born of my children I must redeem. ¹⁶ And it shall be for a sign on thy hand, and immoveably before thy eyes. For with a strong hand the Lord brought thee out of Egypt.

²⁰ Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and cleave to him, and swear by his name. ²¹ He is thy boast; and he is thy God, who hath done for thee those great, and those marvellous things which thine eyes have seen.

⁴ One favour I have asked of the Lord; and this I will earnestly seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life; that I may contemplate the delight of the Lord; and visit his temple.

⁷ Thou art my refuge from affliction, which surroundeth me; my jubilee to redeem me from them who encompass me.

¹⁷ Thou, God, hast taught me from my youth: and thus far I can declare thy wonders; ¹⁸ even to old age and grey hairs. God, forsake me not, till I declare thine arm to the rising generation;

³ such as we have heard and known, which our fathers have related to us. ⁴ They were not hid from their children: one generation told another the praises of the Lord, his acts of power, and the wonders which he hath done. ⁵ Thus he raised up a testimony in Jacob, and established a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to make known to their children: ⁶ that the succeeding generation; the children to be born, might know it, and rise and tell the same to their children:

²¹ O let them praise the Lord for his mercies, and for his wonderful dealings with the sons of men; ²² and let them offer him a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and publish his works with joy.

³¹ let them praise the Lord for his mercies, and for his Wonderful dealings with the sons of men. ³² Let them extol him in the congregation of the people: and praise him in the assembly of Elders.

² The works of the Lord are great; exquisitely contrived for all his purposes. ³ Thanksgiving and majesty, his work and his righteousness shall endure forever. ⁴ He hath made a memorial of his wonders: merciful and gracious is the Lord.

¹² What shall I render to the Lord; for all that he hath done for me?

¹⁶ Lord I am thy servant; I am thy servant and the son of thy handmaid. Thou hast burst my bonds asunder:

³ The Lord is great and greatly to be praised; and of his greatness there is no end. ⁴ Let generation after generation praise thy works, and proclaim thy mighty power: ⁵ Let them speak of the transcendant glory of thy majesty, and relate thy wonderous works. ⁶ Let them express the might of thine awful dealings, and rehearse thy greatness. ⁷ Let them make mention of thine abundant goodness, and exult with joy in thy saving mercy. ⁸ The Lord is gracious and merciful: long suffering and abundant in kindness. ⁹ The Lord is kind to them who wait, and his mercies are over all his works. ¹⁰ Let all thy works, O Lord, praise thee, and let thy saints bless thee; ¹¹ let them speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy government: ¹² to make known thy government to the sons of men, and the transcendant glory of thy kingdom.

⁷ [c] I recollected the loving kindness of the Lord; the mercies of the Lord in all those things which he retributeth for us. The Lord is a good judge to the house of Israel. He dealeth with us according to his tender mercy and according to the abundance of his saving goodness, ⁸ and said "Is not this my people? Children should not rebel." And he became their Saviour from all their distress. ⁹ It was not an ambassador nor a messenger; but he himself saved them. Through his love and his indulgence to them, he himself redeemed them and took them up, and exalted them all the days of old. ¹⁰ But they rebelled and provoked his holy spirit; so he became their enemy. He fought against them; ¹¹ though he remembered the days of old. O! where is he who caused the shepherd of his flock to come up out of the sea? Where is he, who put his holy spirit in them? ¹² That glorious arm of his which led Moses by the right hand? He forced back the water from before him, to make himself an everlasting name. ¹³ He led them through the deep, like a horse through a desert; and they were not fatigued:

¹³ Upon which Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many concerning this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints in Jerusalem; ¹⁴ and he is here with authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke thy name. ¹⁵ And the Lord said to him, Go: for this person is a vessel which I have chosen to bear my name before nations and kings and the children of Israel. For ¹⁶ I will shew him what he must suffer for my name.

²³ who had only heard that he who formerly persecuted us is now proclaiming the glad tidings of that belief which he was formerly destroying, ²⁴ and they glorified God on my account.

²³ For I am strained between the two, having a desire to depart and to be with Christ which is by far the best;

¹³ who was before a reviler, and a persecutor, and an outrageous offender: but I obtained mercy because I acted ignorantly, in unbelief. ¹⁴ And this favour of our Lord superabounded with faith and love which is by Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ This is a faithful word and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am a chief; ¹⁶ but I obtained mercy for this purpose, that Jesus Christ might display the utmost forbearance in me, a chief, for an example to them who should afterwards trust in him for everlasting life.

²¹ He is thy boast; and he is thy God, who hath done for thee those great, and those marvellous things which thine eyes have seen.

¹⁶ Come, hearken, all ye who fear God, and I will tell you what he hath done for my soul.

² Then was our mouth filled with joy, and our tongue with exultation; then did they say among the nations, "The Lord hath done great things for them." ³ The Lord hath done great things for us; we are transported with rapturous joy.

¹ NABUCHODONOSAR the king, to all the peoples, tribes and languages who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. ² It hath seemed good in my sight to declare to you the signs and the wonders which the God who is Most High hath done with me. ³ How great and mighty is his kingdom. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; and his dominion is to endless ages.

³⁴ And at the end of the days I Nabuchodonosar lifted up mine eyes to heaven, and mine understanding was restored to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and glorified him who liveth forever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion and his kingdom is to endless generations, ³⁵ and all the inhabitants of the earth are reckoned as nothing; and he doth according to his pleasure in the army of heaven and in the habitations of the earth; and there is none who can stay his hand, or say to him, What hast thou done. ³⁶ At this very hour my senses were restored to me and I reassumed the honour of my kingdom; and my form returned to me; and my princes and my grandees sought me; and I was reestablished in my kingdom and greater majesty was added to me. ³⁷ Now therefore I Nabuchodonosar praise and extol and glorify the king of heaven; for all his works are true and his ways are judgments and all them who walk in pride he can abase.

⁴⁵ But when he went out he began to proclaim freely and publish the matter abroad, so that Jesus could no more go openly into a city, but continued without in solitary places, where people resorted to him from all quarters.

¹⁵ Whereupon one of them perceiving that he was healed, returned glorifying God with a loud voice; ¹⁶ and prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, gave him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. ¹⁷ Upon this, Jesus addressing him, said, Were not the ten cleansed? Where then are the nine? ¹⁸ Have none returned to give glory to God, but only this alien?

²⁹ Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Is this the Christ?

⁸ Now if any one doth not provide for his own, and especially for those of his family, he hath renounced his belief, and is worse than an infidel.

³⁴ happy is the man who will hearken to me: and the man who will keep my ways; watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

¹ So having gone onboard the vessel, he crossed over, and came to his own city.

³⁷ If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son? As the great multitude heard him with pleasure,

⁶ Accordingly he hasted and came down, and received him joyfully.

³⁷ And as he was drawing near, just at the descent of the mount of olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to express their joy in loud acclamations, praising God for all the miracles which they had seen, ³⁸ saying, Blessed be the king who is coming in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!

⁴⁸ but could not find the means of effecting it. For all the people were bent upon hearing him.

⁷ Thereupon Jesus saith to him, I was coming; I will cure him. ⁸ In reply to which the centurion said, Sir, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof; but only speak a word and my servant will be cured.

¹⁸ While he was thus speaking to them, behold a chief came and, making obeisance to him, said, My daughter is at the point of death, but come and lay thy hand on her and she will live. ¹⁹ Thereupon Jesus arose and with his disciples followed him. ²⁰ And lo! a woman who had been twelve years afflicted with an efflux of blood, came behind and touched the tuft of his mantle. ²¹ For she said within herself, If I can only touch his mantle, I shall be cured. ²² And Jesus turned about and when he saw her, said, Daughter, take courage; thy faith hath cured3 thee. And from that instant the woman was cured. ²³ And when Jesus came to the house of the chief and saw the minstrels and the crowd in a bustle, ²⁴ he saith to them, withdraw, for the damsel is not dead but asleep, Whereupon they derided him. ²⁵ But when the crowd was turned out, he went in and took her by the hand, and the damsel arose. ²⁶ And the fame of this spread over all that country.

²² And behold there cometh to him one of the rulers of the synagogue, whose name was Jairus, who, upon seeing him, falleth at his feet ²³ and intreateth him earnestly, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death, pray come and lay thy hands on her that she may be cured, and she will live. ²⁴ So Jesus went with him, followed by a great multitude which pressed about him. ²⁵ And a certain woman, who had been twelve years afflicted with an issue of blood, ²⁶ and who had suffered much under many physicians, and spent all that she had, and instead of being any thing the better, rather grew worse, ²⁷ having heard of Jesus, came behind him, in the crowd, and touched his mantle. ²⁸ For she said, If I can but touch his clothes, I shall be cured. ²⁹ And instantly the source of her disorder was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was cured of that disorder. ³⁰ Thereupon Jesus conscious of the power which had gone forth from him, turning about immediately, in the crowd, said, Who touched my clothes? ³¹ Upon which his disciples said to him, Thou seest how the crowd throng thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me? ³² Still he looked round to see her who had done this, ³³ when the woman, knowing what had been done for her, came trembling with fear, and prostrating herself before him, told him the whole truth. ³⁴ Whereupon he said to her, Daughter, thy faith hath cured thee. Go in peace, and continue cured of that disorder of thine. ³⁵ Now while he was speaking, messengers came from the ruler's house, who said, Thy daughter is dead, why troublest thou the teacher any further? ³⁶ Upon hearing this message delivered, Jesus immediately saith to the ruler of the synagogue,57 Be not afraid. Only believe. ³⁷ Then he permitted none to accompany him, but Peter and James, and John the brother of James. ³⁸ And coming to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeing a tumultuous crowd weeping and wailing immoderately, ³⁹ he saith to them, as he was going in, Why make ye this ado, and weep? The child is not dead, but asleep. ⁴⁰ Upon which they derided him. But he, having put them all out, taketh with him the father and mother of the child, and them who accompanied him, and goeth into the room where the child was laid. ⁴¹ And, taking hold of the child's hand, he saith to her, "Talitha cumi," the meaning of which is, damsel, I say to thee, Arise. ⁴² And immediately the damsel arose and walked about; for she was twelve years old. Upon which they were struck with great astonishment. ⁴³ Then he strictly charged them that none should know this, and ordered something to be given her to eat.

⁴⁹ And while he was yet speaking, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, and saith to him, Thy daughter is dead. Trouble not the teacher.

¹⁴ Upon which the ruler of the synagogue, to express his indignation because Jesus cured on the sabbath day, addressed the people and said, There are six days on which work should be done: come therefore on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.

¹⁶ and prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, gave him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.

⁴⁶ Jesus therefore went again to Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain officer of the king, whose son was sick at Capernaum. ⁴⁷ This person, upon hearing that Jesus was come from Judea to Galilee, went to him and intreated him to go down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ Jesus therefore said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, can you not believe? ⁴⁹ The officer saith to him, Sir, Come down before my child die.

²¹ Martha therefore said to Jesus, Master, if thou hadst been here my brother would not have died;

³⁸ And as Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, intreating him to come to them without delay.

¹⁵ And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, Men, brethren, if you have any word of consolation to the people, deliver it.

⁸ Now Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, with all his household, believed in the Lord: and many of the Corinthians, when they heard, believed and were baptized.

¹⁷ Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the tribunal. But Gallio did not concern himself in the affair.

⁸ And when he took the book, the four animate beings and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, having, every of them, kitharas and golden cups full of incense which is the prayers of the saints.

²⁰ And we said to my lord, We have a father an old man; and he hath a younger son of his old age. His brother is dead, and as he is the only one of his mother left; his father loveth him. ²¹ Then thou saidst to thy servants, Bring him down to me and I will take care of him. ²² And we said to my lord, This son cannot leave his father; for if he were to leave him, his father would die.

¹⁸ While he was still speaking, another messenger came, and said to Job, While thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's, ¹⁹ a great blast of wind came up suddenly from the wilderness, and took the four corners of the house, so that the house fell upon thy children, and they are dead, and I, alone having escaped, am come to tell thee.

²⁰ but from morning till noon: and they are no more.

⁵ shall these trifling years of theirs be as if in the morning, a green herb passed away? ⁶ Should it in the morning bloom and pass away? In the evening it would have fallen, withered and become dry. ⁷ Because we have fallen short by thine anger, and by thine indignation have been troubled; ⁸ thou hast placed our iniquities before thee: let this age of ours be for the light of thy countenance.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like grass; like a flower of the field, so he may bloom. ¹⁶ Because a blast of wind passed over it, it is gone. It shall no more know its place.

¹² Doth any one know what is good for man in this life? All the days of his life of vanity he hath indeed done these things under a shade; is there any who can tell him what will be after him under the sun?

¹⁶ Son of man, Behold I take from thee the desires of thine eyes with a stroke. Thou must not mourn, nor utter lamentation.

²⁵ And with regard to thee son of man, will not this be the case? On the day when I take from them their strength; that which was their exultation and boast and the desire of their eyes and the pride of their soul; their sons and their daughters;

¹⁰ And when I pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and compassion, then will they look to him whom they pierced, and they will mourn for him with a mourning as for a beloved; and be afflicted with sorrow as for a first born.

²⁴ So Jesus went with him, followed by a great multitude which pressed about him.

¹² And as he approached the gate of the city, behold the people were carrying out a dead man to be buried; the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And there was a great multitude of the city with her.

⁴⁵ Thereupon Jesus said, Who touched me? And when all denied, Peter and they who were with him, said; Master, the crowds are thronging and pressing thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me?

¹² on this account; as sin entered into this world by one man, and death by sin, and so death for which all sinned passed through unto all men:

²⁵ And if any woman hath an efflux of blood many days, out of the time of her separation; or if it continue beyond the time of her separation, all the days of this issue of uncleanness, shall be like the days of her separation. She shall be unclean; ²⁶ and every bed on which she may lie during this issue, shall be to her like her bed of separation. And every seat on which she may sit, shall be unclean according to the uncleanness of her separate state. ²⁷ Every one who toucheth her shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and wash his body with water, and be unclean until evening. ²⁸ And when she is clear of her disorder she shall reckon for herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. ²⁹ And on the eighth day she shall take two turtle doves, or two young pigeons, and carry them to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the testimony. ³⁰ And the priest shall offer one of them for a sin offering, and the other for a whole burnt offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her before the Lord, on the account of her uncleanness. ³¹ Thus shall you make the children of Israel religiously careful to guard against their uncleannesses, that they may not die for their uncleanness; for defiling my tabernacle which is among them. ³² This is the law for him who hath a gonorrhea, and for him whose seed goeth from him so as to be defiled thereby; ³³ and for her who is menstruous; and for the emission of seed between a man and a woman; and for a man who lieth by a woman; in her state of separation.

¹² In the thirty ninth year of his reign, Asa was diseased in his feet, till he became very sick; but in his sickness he did not apply to the Lord, but to physicians.

⁴ Now you are all bad physicians and curers of maladies.

¹² Grant us help because of affliction; safety from man is indeed vain.

¹ HO! ye who are thirsting, come to water! And ye who have no money, come buy and eat, without money and without price, wine and the choicest bread. ² Why are you expending money and labour for that which will not satisfy? Hearken to me and you shall eat good things; and your soul will be regaled with delicacies. ³ Incline your ears and follow in my paths; hearken to me and your soul shall live on good things; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant; the gracious promises to David which are faithful.

²⁵ And a certain woman, who had been twelve years afflicted with an issue of blood, ²⁶ and who had suffered much under many physicians, and spent all that she had, and instead of being any thing the better, rather grew worse,

¹⁸ And whenever it seizeth him, it convulseth him; and he foameth, and grindeth his teeth, and is shrivelled up. I spoke indeed to thy disciples to cast it out, but they could not.

²¹ And Jesus asked his father, How long since this befel him? And he said, From his childhood. ²² And oft times it hath cast him into fire, and into waters to destroy him. But if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us and help us.

¹¹ behold there was a woman there, who for eighteen years had a spirit of infirmity, and was so bowed down that she could in no wise look up.

¹⁶ And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo! these eighteen years, to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

⁵ Now there was a certain man there who had been in his infirmity thirty eight years. ⁶ Jesus seeing him lying there, and knowing that he had been in that condition now a long time, saith to him, Hast thou a desire to be healed?

¹ And as he was passing along he saw a man who was blind from his birth,

²¹ But how he now seeth, we do not know: nor do we know who hath opened his eyes. He is of age; ask him; let him speak for himself.

² there was a certain man carried up who had been lame from his birth, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple, called Beauty-Gate, to ask alms of them who were going into the temple;

²² For the man, upon whom this miracle of healing was performed, was above forty years old.

⁸ Now at Lystra there sat a man who had no use of his feet, being a cripple from his birth, who had never walked. ⁹ This man was listening to Paul speaking, who fixing his eyes upon him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, ¹⁰ said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. Upon which he leaped up and walked.

²⁶ and said, If thou wilt hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and do the things well pleasing in his sight, and hearken to his commandments, and keep all these his rules of rectitude, I will not bring upon thee any of the diseases which I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord thy God who healeth thee.

¹² Thou shalt make bunches of ribbons on the four tufts of the mantles with which thou clothest thyself.

² But to you who fear my name the son of righteousness will arise with healing in his wings; and you shall go forth and leap for joy like young bullocks loosed from yokes.

³ Whereupon Jesus stretched forth his hand and touched him, saying, I will: Be thou cleansed. And immediately he was cured of his leprosy.

³⁴ And Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes; and instantly they received sight. And they followed him.

²⁷ having heard of Jesus, came behind him, in the crowd, and touched his mantle. ²⁸ For she said, If I can but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.

⁵⁶ And wherever he entered towns, or cities, or villages, they laid the sick in the streets, and begged that they might but touch the tuft of his mantle. And as many as touched were cured.

³⁸ and standing behind, at his feet, weeping, she first bathed his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the tresses of her hair. Then she kissed his feet and anointed them with the myrrh.

¹³ and laid his hands on her. And instantly she stood upright and glorified God.

¹³ But he who was cured did not know who it was; for as there was a crowd in the place, Jesus had glided away.

¹⁵ so that in every street they brought out the sick and laid them on beds and couches, that the shadow of Peter as he went along might overshadow some of them.

¹² so that handkerchiefs and aprons were carried from his body to them who were sick, and the diseases were removed from them, and evil spirits went out of them.

³⁰ Thereupon Jesus conscious of the power which had gone forth from him, turning about immediately, in the crowd, said, Who touched my clothes? ³¹ Upon which his disciples said to him, Thou seest how the crowd throng thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me? ³² Still he looked round to see her who had done this,

¹³ But he said to them, Do you, yourselves, give them something to eat. Thereupon they said to him, We have not more than five loaves and two fishes. Must we then go and buy food for all this people?

¹⁷ One day when he was teaching, and some Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting by, and the power of the Lord was displayed in curing the sick;

¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him, because power went forth from him, and healed all.

⁹ but you being a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people peculiarly set apart that you may publish the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light

⁴ So Samuel did all that the Lord spoke to him. Now when he came to Bethlehem, the elders of the city were surprised at meeting him, and said, Seer! Is thy coming peaceable?

¹¹ Serve the Lord with fear: and rejoice for him with trembling.

⁹ Now all my desire was before thee, and my groans were not hid from thee.

² For all these things my hand hath made: and all these things are mine saith the Lord. Upon whom therefore will I look down, but upon him only who is humble and quiet, and who trembleth at my words?

³ I acknowledged Ephraim, when Israel did not withdraw from me. Now because Ephraim went a whoring, Israel is polluted.

¹ According to Ephraim's own account he received rules of rectitude by Israel, but he attributed them to Baal and incurred death.

¹⁶ I watched myself; and at the sound of the prayer of my lips my bowels trembled and a tremor seized my bones; and under me my whole frame quivered. I shall be at rest in the day of affliction, at the time of his coining to the people of my neighbourhood.

⁸ Accordingly, having come out quickly from the tomb, with fear and great joy they ran to tell his disciples.

³³ when the woman, knowing what had been done for her, came trembling with fear, and prostrating herself before him, told him the whole truth.

¹⁵ Whereupon one of them perceiving that he was healed, returned glorifying God with a loud voice; ¹⁶ and prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, gave him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.

²⁹ Thereupon, calling for lights, he ran in, and being in a tremour, prostrated himself before Paul and Silas,

³ with regard to myself, I was among you in weakness and in fear, and in great trembling;

¹⁵ and his affection for you increaseth more abundantly on recollecting the obedience of you all, how you received him with fear and trembling.

¹² Therefore, as you, my beloved, have always been obedient, not only when I was present, but now much more when I am absent, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

²⁸ As we have therefore received a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have gratitude by which we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and holy awe:

¹⁸ Then Moses went and returned to Jothor his father in law and said, I must go and return to my brethren who are in Egypt and see if they be still living. And Jothor said to Moses, Go in peace.

¹⁷ Then Eli in reply said to her, Go in peace. May the God of Israel grant thee thy petition, which thou hast asked of him.

¹⁹ And Elisha said to Naiman, Go in peace.

¹³ Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go thy way and be it done for thee as thou hast believed. And that very instant his servant was cured.

² And lo! they brought to him a paralytic laid on a bed: and Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, Take courage, my son; thy sins are forgiven thee.

²² And Jesus turned about and when he saw her, said, Daughter, take courage; thy faith hath cured3 thee. And from that instant the woman was cured.

²⁰ A bruised reed he will not break, nor extinguish a dimly burning taper, until he render his judgment victorious.

³⁴ Whereupon he said to her, Daughter, thy faith hath cured thee. Go in peace, and continue cured of that disorder of thine.

⁵⁰ Thereupon he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee, Go in peace.

¹⁹ Then he said to him, Rise and go thy way. Thy faith hath cured thee.

⁴² Then Jesus said to him, Have sight. Thy faith hath cured thee.

⁹ This man was listening to Paul speaking, who fixing his eyes upon him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

² For we have had the glad tidings proclaimed to us, as they also had; but the word which they heard did not profit them; as it was not mixed up with belief by the hearers.

¹² And Achaz said, "I will not ask, nor will I try the Lord."

⁶ So Jesus went with them. But when he was now at no great distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying, Sir, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof:

⁴¹ And behold there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue, who prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, besought him to go to his house; ⁴² because he had a daughter, an only child, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. And as he was going, the people crowded him; ⁴³ and a woman, who had been twelve years afflicted with an issue of blood, and who had spent all her living on physicians, none of whom could cure her,

⁷ and he from within should say in reply, Do not trouble me now: the door is shut, and my children as well as I are in bed: I cannot rise and give thee:

¹⁰ Who is there among you who feareth the Lord, let him hearken to the voice of his servant. Ye who walk in darkness and have no light, trust in the name of the Lord and stay your selves on God.

³⁶ Upon hearing this message delivered, Jesus immediately saith to the ruler of the synagogue,57 Be not afraid. Only believe.

²³ Thereupon Jesus said to him, With regard to this canst thou believe? All things are possible for him who believeth.

²² In reply to which, Jesus saith to them, Have faith in God. ²³ For verily I say to you, If one should say to that mountain, Be thou lifted up and cast into the sea; and have no doubt in his mind, but believe that what he saith cometh to pass; whatever he may command shall be done for him. ²⁴ Therefore I say to you, What things soever you ask when you pray, believe that you will receive, and you shall have them.

⁴⁸ Whereupon he said to her, Daughter, take courage; thy faith hath cured thee. Go in peace.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life; he who believeth in me, though he may die, shall live.

¹⁷ who; as it is written, " I have made thee a father of many nations" is the father of us all in the sight of him in whom he believed; namely God who reanimateth the dead, and calleth up things not yet in existence as if actually existing.

²⁰ He disputed not against the promise of God by unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God,

¹⁹ And Elias said to the woman, Give me thy son. So he took him out of her bosom and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his bed. ²⁰ Then Elias cried and said, Woe is me! Lord! Here is the witness of the widow with whom I dwell. Thou hast afflicted her in causing her son to die. ²¹ And when he had breathed on the child three times and called on the Lord, he said, Lord, my God, I beseech thee let this child's life be restored to him. ²² And so it came to pass and the child cried. ²³ Then Elias brought it down from the upper chamber, and delivering him to his mother, said, See, thy son liveth.

⁴ Then go in and shut the door on thee and thy sons, and pour out into these vessels, setting aside that which is full. ⁵ So she went away from him; and having shut the door on herself and her sons, they brought to her and she poured out until the vessels were filled. ⁶ And when she said to her sons, Bring me another vessel, and they replied, There is not a vessel more, the oil stopped.

³⁴ he went up and lay down upon the child and put his mouth on the child's mouth, and his eyes on its eyes, and his hands on its hands, and bent himself down upon it; and the flesh of the child was warmed. ³⁵ Then he withdrew, and when he had walked backward and forward in the house, he went up and bent himself upon the child seven times, and the child opened its eyes. ³⁶ Whereupon Elisha called Giezi and said, Call the Somanite. So he called her. And when she came to him, Elisha said, Take up thy son.

² He will not scream, nor urge with vehemence: nor will his voice be heard abroad in the streets.

⁵ And when thou prayest, be not like the hypocrites. Because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets that men may observe them; verily I say to you, They have their reward. ⁶ But as for thee, when thou wouldst pray, retire to thy closet, and having shut the door pray to thy father who is in secret, and thy father who seeth in secret will reward thee openly.

³⁷ Then he permitted none to accompany him, but Peter and James, and John the brother of James. ³⁸ And coming to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeing a tumultuous crowd weeping and wailing immoderately, ³⁹ he saith to them, as he was going in, Why make ye this ado, and weep? The child is not dead, but asleep. ⁴⁰ Upon which they derided him. But he, having put them all out, taketh with him the father and mother of the child, and them who accompanied him, and goeth into the room where the child was laid.

³³ Then he taketh with him Peter, and James and John, and being seized with agonizing horror and distress of mind,

¹⁴ Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew, his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

²⁸ About eight days after these discourses, he took Peter, and John, and James, and went up to the mountain to pray.

⁴⁰ Then Peter, having put them all out, kneeled down and prayed, and turning to the body, he said, Tabitha, arise. Upon which she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, sat up.

² And Sarah died in the city Arbok, which is in the vale, the same is Chebron in the land of Chanaan. And Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to make lamentation.

³⁴ And when Esau heard the words of his father Isaak he cried with a loud and very bitter cry and said, Bless, I beseech thee, me also, Father. ³⁵ And he said to him, Thy brother hath come deceitfully and taken thy blessing.

¹⁷ Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like fire blazing on the top of the mount in the view of the Israelites;

³³ At this the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber, over the gate, and wept. And as he was going up he thus expressed himself, Oh, my son, Abessalom! Oh! my son! my son Abessalom! that they had slain me instead of thee; that I had died in thy stead! Oh Abessalom! my son! my son!

¹⁷ Thus saith the Lord, Call the mourning women and let them come; send for the well instructed and let them utter a plaintive sound ¹⁸ and take up a mournful lamentation for you: and let your eyes collect tears, and your eye lids gush out water. ¹⁹ [p] Because a sound of wailing is heard in Sion; "Oh how wretched we are! how greatly confounded because we have left our land, and abandoned our habitations:" ²⁰ hear I beseech you, women! a word of God: and let your ears receive the words of his mouth: and teach your daughters a song of Woe; and every woman, her neighbour the mournful dirge. ²¹ For death is gone up through your windows: it is come into your land, to destroy infants at home and young men in the streets:

¹⁷ saying, "We have played to you on the pipe, but you have not danced; We have sung to you songs of woe, and you have not lamented."

³⁸ And coming to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeing a tumultuous crowd weeping and wailing immoderately, ³⁹ he saith to them, as he was going in, Why make ye this ado, and weep? The child is not dead, but asleep.

⁴ Upon hearing this, Jesus said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that by it the son of God may be glorified.

¹¹ Thus he spake, and after that he saith to them, Our friend Lazarus is composed to rest; but I am going to wake him. ¹² Thereupon his disciples said, Master, if he is composed to rest, he will recover. ¹³ Now Jesus spoke of his death; but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

⁴ For a just man and one irreprehensible hath been made a mocking stock.

² I am supplicating in distress, yet what have I done? Strangers have stolen my substance; who is the man?

⁷ All that see me have laughed me to scorn; they said with their lips while they shaked their head,

³ but his appearance is mean and defective beyond the sons of men. Being a man in affliction and acquainted with grief, because his countenance was dejected, he was despised and disesteemed.

⁴⁴ upon which Pilate expressed wonder if he could be dead, and calling for the centurion, asked him, If he had been dead any time. ⁴⁵ And being informed by the centurion, he had granted the body to Joseph;

¹⁴ When the Pharisees who loved money heard all these things they treated him with scorn.

³⁹ Jesus saith, Remove the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, saith to him, Master, by this time the smell is offensive; for this is the fourth day.

³³ But when they came to Jesus, as they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. ³⁴ But one of the soldiers with his spear pierced his side, and blood and water issued forth immediately. ³⁵ Now he who was an eye witness hath testified this. And his testimony is true, and [Jesus] himself knoweth that he speaketh the truth that you may believe.

³² Not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. Because they did not abide by this covenant of mine, therefore I took no care of them.

²⁵ But when the crowd was turned out, he went in and took her by the hand, and the damsel arose.

³¹ whereupon he went to her, and taking hold of her hand, raised her up, and instantly the fever left her, and she waited on them.

⁴⁰ Upon which they derided him. ²³ Thereupon taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes, he laid his hands on him, and asked him if he seeth any thing?

²⁷ But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up.

¹⁴ Then he advanced and touched the bier, [now the bearers had stopped] and he said, Young man, I say to thee, Arise. ¹⁵ Thereupon he who had been dead, sat up and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

⁵¹ And when he entered the house, he permitted none to go .in, but Peter and James and John, and the father and the mother of the child.

²¹ For as the Father raiseth the dead and restoreth to life, so the Son restoreth to life, whom he pleaseth.

²⁸ Wonder not at this; for a time is coming when all that are in the graves shall hearken to his voice, ²⁹ and come forth; they who have done good, to a resurrection of life, and they who have done evil, to a resurrection of condemnation.

⁴³ And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, Come forth.

⁴³ Then he strictly charged them that none should know this, and ordered something to be given her to eat.

⁴¹ And as they were still diffident on account of their joy, and in amaze, he said to them, Have you any food here? ⁴² Thereupon they gave him a piece of broiled fish and part of a honey comb, ⁴³ which he took and ate before them.

⁴⁴ Whereupon he who had been dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped in a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him and let him go.

⁴ Then Jesus saith to him, See thou tell no one; but go and shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses prescribed, for a testimony to them.

³⁰ Whereupon their eyes were opened. Then Jesus restrained them, saying, See that none know this.
