¹ Then some Scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem accosted Jesus, saying, ² Why do thy disciples transgress the doctrine of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. ³ In reply to which he said to them, Why do you transgress the commandment of God, from a regard to your doctrines? ⁴ For God commanded saying, "Honour thy father and thy mother, and whosoever revileth father or mother let him be put to death: ⁵ but you say, "Whoever shall say to his father or to his mother, Let that by which thou mightest be benefited by me, be dedicated, ⁶ must not honour either his father or his mother." Thus you have annulled the commandment of God from a regard to your doctrines. ⁷ Hypocrites! well did Esaias prophesy concerning you, saying, ⁸ This people draw near to me with their mouth; and with their lips they honour me, but their heart is far from me; ⁹ and, in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines, the commands of men. ¹⁰ Then having called the multitude to him, he said to them, Hear and understand; ¹¹ It is not that which goeth into the mouth which defileth the man; but it is that which cometh out of the mouth, which defileth the man. ¹² Then his disciples coming to him said, Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard that saying, were offended? ¹³ In reply to which he said, Every plant which my heavenly father hath not planted, is to be rooted up. ¹⁴ Let them alone. They are blind leaders of blind. Now if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into a ditch. ¹⁵ Then Peter addressing him said, Explain to us this parable. ¹⁶ Whereupon Jesus said, Are you also yet without understanding? ¹⁷ Do you not yet perceive, that whatever entereth in at the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is thrown out into the sink? ¹⁸ And that what proceed from the mouth come from the heart, and that these defile the man? ¹⁹ For out of the heart come malicious surmises, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, calumnies. ²⁰ These are the things which defile the man: but to eat with unwashen hands doth not defile the man. ²¹ Then Jesus having left that place, withdrew into the confines of Tyre and Sidon. ²² And lo! a Chananitish woman from those quarters came out and cried with a loud voice, saying to him, Have pity on me, O my lord, Son of David; my daughter is grievously afflicted by a demon. ²³ But he made her no answer. Then his disciples came near and intreated him, saying, Dismiss this woman, for she crieth after us. ²⁴ And he in reply said, My mission is only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. ²⁵ She nevertheless advanced, and prostrating herself before him, said, O my lord, help me. ²⁶ Whereupon he in reply said, It is not seemly to take the childrens bread and cast it to the dogs. ²⁷ And she said, True, Sir. Yet even the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table. ²⁸ Thereupon Jesus in reply said to her, O woman, great is thy faith; Be it to thee as thou desirest. And from that instant her daughter was healed. ²⁹ When Jesus left that place he came nigh to the sea of Galilee, and having ascended the mountain, he sat down there, ³⁰ and great multitudes flocked to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the dumb, the cripple and many others, whom they laid at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them; ³¹ insomuch that the people beheld with amaze the dumb speaking, the cripple sound, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they glorified the God of Israel. ³² Then Jesus called his disciples and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have attended me now three days, and have nothing to eat. I will not send them away fasting. ³³ Perhaps they may faint on the road. Thereupon his disciples say to him, Whence can we get loaves enough, in a wilderness, to satisfy so great a multitude? ³⁴ And Jesus saith to them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven, and a few small fishes. ³⁵ Then commanding the multitude to recline on the ground, ³⁶ he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and having given thanks, he broke and gave to his disciples; and the disciples [distributed] to the people. ³⁷ And when they had all eaten and were satisfied, there were carried off seven baskets full of the fragments left. ³⁸ Now they who had eaten were about four thousand men, besides women and children. ³⁹ Then having dismissed the multitude, he embarked and came to the coast of Magdala.

²⁰ For I say to you, Unless your righteousness exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you can in no wise enter the kingdom of the heavens.

¹⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, you make him doubly more a child of hell, than yourselves. ¹⁶ Alas for you, blind guides, who say, to swear by the temple is not binding; but to swear by the gold of the temple is binding. ¹⁷ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gold? Or the temple which halloweth the gold? ¹⁸ And, to swear by the altar doth not bind; but to swear by the gift thereon is binding. ¹⁹ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gift? Or the altar which halloweth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all on it. ²¹ And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by him who dwelleth therein. ²² And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. ²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel. ²⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate; but on the inside they are full of rapine, and intemperance. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean. ²⁷ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like whitened sepulchres. These indeed appear beautiful on the outside; but within they are full of dead men's bones, and of all Corruption. ²⁸ In like manner you also appear outwardly to men to be righteous; but you are inwardly full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

²² and the Scribes who had come down from Jerusalem, said, He is possessed by Beelzebub, and by the prince of the demons he expelleth the demons;]

¹ Then the Pharisees, and some of the Scribes who had come from Jerusalem, ² resort to him in a body, and seeing some of his disciples eating bread with unclean, that is with unwashen hands, they found fault. ³ For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, holding the doctrine of the elders, do not eat with out washing the hands with the doubled fist: ⁴ and if they come from the market they do not eat without dipping them. And there are many other usages which they have adopted, such as the dipping of cups, and pots, and brass vessels, and couches. ⁵ Therefore the Pharisees and the Scribes ask him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the doctrines of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? ⁶ In reply to which he said to them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you, hypocrites; as it is written, "This people honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ⁷ And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines, the commands of men. ⁸ For laying aside the commandment of God, you adhere to the doctrine of men; the dipping of cups, and drinking vessels, and many other things, of the like nature. ⁹ Indeed said he to them, You fairly annul the commandment of God to make room for this doctrine of yours. ¹⁰ For Moses said, "Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Let him who curseth father or mother be put to death." ¹¹ But you say, "If a man say to his father, or to his mother, Let that be Corban, [that is to say dedicated,] by which thou mightest be benefitted by me;" ¹² do not then permit him any more to do any thing for his father or his mother;" ¹³ thus annulling the word of God, by this doctrine of yours, which you have handed down. And thus you act in many other instances. ¹⁴ Then having called to him the whole multitude he said to them, Hearken to me, all of you, and understand. ¹⁵ There is nothing from without, which by entering into a man can defile him; but the things which proceed from within him, are those which defile a man. ¹⁶ If any one hath ears to hear, let him hear. ¹⁷ And when he withdrew from the multitude into a house, his disciples asked him concerning this parable. ¹⁸ Whereupon he saith to them, Are you also so void of understanding? Do you not perceive that nothing which entereth into a man from without can defile him; ¹⁹ because it doth not enter into the heart; but into the belly, and the of scouring of all meats passeth out into the sink? ²⁰ But, said he, it is that which cometh out of a man, which defileth him. ²¹ For from within, out of the heart of man, proceed those evil surmises, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² thefts, inordinate desires, malice, fraud, sensuality, envy, detraction, pride, foolishness. ²³ All these are the evil things which come from within, and defile the man.

¹⁷ One day when he was teaching, and some Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting by, and the power of the Lord was displayed in curing the sick;

²¹ At this the Scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this who speaketh blasphemy? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

³⁰ Whereupon their Scribes and the Pharisees expressed their dissatisfaction to his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

⁹ And there was a great clamour. And the Scribes, siding with the Pharisees, arose and contended, saying, We find nothing amiss in this man. If a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

¹⁴ Then God said, "Let there be luminaries in the firmament of heaven, to give light on the earth; to make a separation between the day and the night: and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and for years;

² resort to him in a body, and seeing some of his disciples eating bread with unclean, that is with unwashen hands, they found fault.

⁵ Therefore the Pharisees and the Scribes ask him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the doctrines of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

³⁸ And when the Pharisee who saw this expressed surprise that he had not first washed before dinner,

⁸ Be on your guard, that none may make a prey of you by their philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ.

²⁰ If you, then, have died with the Christ from the elements of the world, why are you, as if you were living in the world, troubled with these dogmas, ²¹ "Touch not; taste not; handle not;" ²² which all tend to corruption by this improper use according to the injunctions and doctrines of those men. ²³ These indeed have a show of wisdom in will-worship and humility and self denial. Are they not in some estimation for the gratification of the flesh?

¹⁸ knowing that from that vain course of life, handed down to you from your fathers, you have been redeemed not with perishable things such as silver and gold,

³ Now why art thou observant of the mote in thy brother's eye, and insensible to the splinter in thine own eye? ⁴ Or, how canst thou say to thy brother, Hold! let me take the mote out of thine eye, when lo! there is a splinter in thine own eye? ⁵ Hypocrite, first take the splinter out of thine own eye; and then thou wilt see clearly to remove the mote out of thy brother's eye. ⁶ In reply to which he said to them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you, hypocrites; as it is written, "This people honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ⁷ And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines, the commands of men. ⁸ For laying aside the commandment of God, you adhere to the doctrine of men; the dipping of cups, and drinking vessels, and many other things, of the like nature.

¹² Honour thy father and thy mother that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst live long in that good land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

¹⁷ He who curseth his father or his mother shall be put to death.

³ Let every one reverence his father and his mother. And you shall keep my sabbaths. I am the Lord your God;

⁹ Be the man who he may who curseth his father or his mother, let him be put to death. He hath cursed his father or his mother, he shall be held guilty.

¹⁶ Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst live long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

¹⁸ If any man hath a stubborn, and rebellious son, who hearkeneth not to the voice of his father, nor to the voice of his mother; and they have corrected him, and he will not hearken to them; ¹⁹ his father and his mother shall take him, and bring him out to the senate of his city, and to the gate of the place; ²⁰ and they shall say to the men of their city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he hearkeneth not to our voice. He is devoted to revelling and drunkenness. ²¹ Thereupon the men of his city shall stone him with stones, and he shall be put to death. So thou shalt remove the wicked from among you; and the rest, who hear, will be struck with awe.

¹⁶ Cursed he who slighteth his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

²⁰ Whosoever curseth father or mother; let his lamp be extinguished and his eye balls involved in darkness.

²² Hearken, my son, to the father who begot thee: and despise not thy mother because she is old.

¹⁷ The eye which derideth a father and despiseth the old age of a mother, may the ravens of the valley pick it out, and the young eagles devour it.

²⁰ For he hath given a law for assistance; that they may not speak like such an oracle as this, which is not worth the giving of gifts for it.

¹⁰ Whereupon Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan: for it is written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and serve him alone.

¹⁷ Do not imagine that I am come to annul the law and the prophets. I am not come to annul, but to confirm them. ¹⁸ For verily I say to you, Until that heaven and this earth shall have passed away, not one jot nor a tittle of the law shall be annulled till all be accomplished. ¹⁹ Therefore whosoever shall weaken the force of one of the commandments, were it even the least, and teach men accordingly, he shall be the least esteemed in the reign of the heavens; but whoever shall practise and teach them, he shall be highly esteemed in the reign of the heavens.

¹⁹ Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

³¹ Do we then by this belief make law void? No, by no means: on the contrary we establish law.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right.

⁹ But if the gift to the Lord be from the cattle which may be offered, whoever shall give any of these to the Lord, it shall be sacred. ¹⁰ He shall not change it, a good for a bad; nor a bad for a good: and if he actually change this beast for another, both it and that given in exchange shall be sacred. ¹¹ But if it be any kind of unclean beast of which a gift cannot be made to the Lord, he shall present the beast before the priest; ¹² and the priest shall value it at a medium between a good and a bad one; and according as the priest shall value it, so it shall stand; ¹³ and if the person chuse to redeem it, he shall add a fifth to the valuation. ¹⁴ And if a man make a dedication of his house to the Lord, the priest shall value it at a medium between a good and a bad house. And according as the priest shall value it so it shall stand; ¹⁵ and if he who dedicated it chuse to redeem it, he shall add thereto a fifth of the money at which it was rated, and it shall be his. ¹⁶ And if it be a part of the land of his possession, which a man shall dedicate to the Lord, the valuation shall be according to the seed thereof, fifty didrachms of silver for a core of barley; ¹⁷ If he dedicate it at the jubilee; at this valuation it shall stand. ¹⁸ But if he dedicate his field after the jubilee; the priest shall compute for him the money on the years which remain to the jubilee, and make a deduction from the full valuation of it. ¹⁹ And if the man who made the dedication chuse to redeem the field, he shall add one fifth of the money to the valuation of it, and it shall be his. ²⁰ But if he decline to redeem the field, and selleth the field to another man, he shall never afterwards redeem it; ²¹ but at the going out of the jubilee the field shall be consecrated to the Lord, and he shall have possession of it as land set apart for the priest. ²² And if a man make a dedication to the Lord of a field which he hath purchased, and which is not a part of his inheritance, ²³ though the priest settle with him the amount of the price from the year of the jubilee, and he pay the price at which it was rated on the day he made the dedication to the Lord; ²⁴ yet in the year of the jubilee the field shall be restored to the man of whom he purchased it, and whose field of possession it was. ²⁵ Now every valuation shall be by holy weight, twenty oboli making a didrachm. ²⁶ And with regard to every firstling if it be among the cattle, it shall be for the Lord, and none shall dedicate it. Whether it be of the herds or flocks it is the Lord's. ²⁷ And if it be of the four footed beasts which are unclean, he must redeem it according to the valuation, and add thereto a fifth, and it shall be his. And if he will not redeem it, it shall be sold for its value. ²⁸ But with respect to every Anathema which a man may devote to the Lord from all that he hath, whether from man or beast, or from field of his possession, it shall not be sold nor redeemed. Every anathema shall be most sacredly devoted to the Lord. ²⁹ And every thing which hath been devoted as an anathema from among men, shall not be redeemable, but by death. ³⁰ The whole tenth of the land, both of the produce of the land, and of the fruit of the trees, is for the Lord. It is dedicated to the Lord. ³¹ And if any man chuse to redeem his tenth by purchase, he shall add to the valuation a fifth, and it shall be his. ³² Now the whole tenth of herds and flocks; even every one which in numbering shall come under the rod, that tenth shall be dedicated to the Lord. ³³ Thou shalt not change a good for a bad, nor a bad for a good; and if thou shalt actually make an exchange, that given in exchange shall also be consecrated, and shall not be redeemed. ³⁴ These are the commands which the Lord gave in charge to Moses for the children of Israel at mount Sina.

²⁵ The hasty dedication of his property is a snare to a man for after the vow a change of mind happeneth.

¹⁵ and the Lord took me from the flocks and the Lord said to me, "Go and prophesy against my people Israel." ¹⁶ Now therefore hear a word of the Lord, Thou sayst, "Prophesy not against Israel, " and "Thou shalt not give any disturbance to Israel." ¹⁷ Therefore thus saith the Lord. "Thy wife shall be a prostitute in the city; and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword; and thy land shall be measured out with a line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land; and Israel shall be carried captive from his land."

¹⁹ But Peter and John in reply to them, said, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God, judge ye.

²⁹ In reply to which Peter and the apostles said, We must obey God rather than men.

¹²⁶ It is time to act for the Lord; they have made void thy law.

¹³⁹ My zeal for thee hath consumed me; because mine enemies forgot thy words.

⁸ How can you say, "We are wise and the law of the Lord is with us." In vain was it made; the scribes had a lying pen.

⁶ my people is like one that hath not knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, therefore I will reject thee from being my priest: as thou hast forgotten the law of thy God; I also will forget thy children.

⁷ Because the lips of a priest were to keep knowledge therefore law was to be sought from his mouth; since he is a messenger of the Lord Almighty: ⁸ but as for you, you have turned aside out of the way and weakened many by law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord Almighty, ⁹ therefore I have made you contemptible and outcasts among all the nations, because you did not keep my ways, but in law have had respect to persons.

³ Honour widows who are widows indeed. ⁴ But if any widow hath children, or grand children; let these first learn to respect their own household, and to make suitable returns to their parents; for this is good and acceptable in the sight of the Lord.

⁸ Now if any one doth not provide for his own, and especially for those of his family, he hath renounced his belief, and is worse than an infidel.

¹⁶ If any believer of either sex hath widows, let him or her relieve them, and let not the congregation be burdened, that they may relieve them who are really widows.

⁵ Hypocrite, first take the splinter out of thine own eye; and then thou wilt see clearly to remove the mote out of thy brother's eye.

⁶ In reply to which he said to them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you, hypocrites; as it is written, "This people honour me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

²⁵ And being at variance among themselves they broke up, upon Paul's saying one word, that the holy spirit had spoken well to our fathers by the prophet Esaias, ²⁶ saying, "Go and say to the people, Hearing you shall hear, though you may not understand; and seeing you shall see, though you may not perceive; ²⁷ for the heart of this people is callous, and their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes, that for a while they may not see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn that I may heal them."

²⁶ My son, give me thy heart; and let thine eyes observe my ways.

¹³ The Lord hath indeed said, [J] "This people draw near to me with their mouth; and with their lips they honour me; but their heart is far from me: and in vain do they worship me, teaching the commands and doctrines of men:

² Thou hast planted them and they have taken root, they have generated and produced fruit. Thou art near in their mouth, but far from their reins.

³¹ They come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions;

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathaniel coming to him and saith respecting him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile!

²¹ thou hast no portion nor share in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

¹² Take heed, brethren, that there be not in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

¹⁰ For "whoever desireth life; and loveth to see good days; Let him keep his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking guile;

⁷ Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord thy God will not hold him guiltless who taketh his name in vain.

¹⁶ I will deal with you in this manner; I will send against you distress, and the scab, and the gangrene to eat out your eyes; and wasting consumption; and you shall sow your seed in vain; for your enemies shall eat it:

²⁰ and your strength shall be spent in vain. The earth shall not yield you its seed, nor shall the trees of the field yield you their fruit.

³² Be careful to do every thing which I this day command you. Thou shalt not add to it, nor diminish from it.

²¹ Now David had said, Surely for an unrighteous fellow have I guarded all that he had in the wilderness, and we have not ordered the taking of any thing belonging to him: but he hath rewarded me evil for good.

⁶ Man indeed walketh about as an image; still he troubleth himself in vain. He heapeth up treasures and knoweth not for whom he is to gather them.

¹³ Nay, I myself said, Have I then in vain kept my heart just; and washed my hands in innocence.

⁵ Since all the words of God are tried, and he is a shield to them who revere him; ⁶ add not to his words lest he reprove thee and thou be found a liar.

² be thou not rash with thy mouth; nor let thy heart be hasty to utter a word in the presence of God. Because God is in the heaven above, and thou art on the earth, let thy words there fore be few. ³ Because a dream cometh by much temptation, and a fool's voice with many words; ⁴ when thou vowest a vow to God delay not the performance of it. For in fools there is no fixed will. Pay thou therefore what thou vowest. ⁵ It is better not to vow, than to vow and not perform. ⁶ Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin, nor say in the presence of God, It was an inadvertence, that God may not be provoked to wrath by thy voice, and destroy the works of thy hands, ⁷ because it was with a multitude of dreams and vanities, and many words that thou fearest God.

¹³ Though you bring fine flour; it is a vain incense: it is an abomination to me. Your new moons and sabbaths and great day I cannot endure: ¹⁴ your fasting and cessation from labour; and your new moons and your festivals my soul hateth. You are become loathsome to me; I will no longer remit your sins. ¹⁵ When you stretch forth your hands, I will turn mine eyes from you: and though you multiply prayer, I will not hearken to you: for your hands are full of blood.

¹ [J] CRY aloud and spare not; raise thy voice like a trumpet: proclaim to my people their sins, and to the house of Jacob their iniquities. ² Day after day they seek me, and desire to know my ways; like a people who have practised righteousness, and who have not forsaken the ordinance of God. They now ask of me a just decision and desire to draw near to God. ³ Saying, "Why have we fasted and thou hast not seen? We have humbled our souls and thou hast not known." In the very days of your fasts you enjoy your own pleasures and goad all them who are under your controul.

¹⁴ You say, "Vain is he who serveth God: and what advantage is it, that we have kept his charges. For though we have walked as supplicants before the Lord Almighty,

⁷ And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines, the commands of men.

² and by which also you are saved, if you strictly adhere to it, unless indeed you believed in vain.

¹⁸ let no one deprive you of the prize; however delighted he may be with an affected humility and the religion of angels, prying into matters which he hath not seen, being vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, ¹⁹ and not adhering to the head, from which the whole body, being by means of joints and ligaments supplied and knit together, is to receive the divine increase. ²⁰ If you, then, have died with the Christ from the elements of the world, why are you, as if you were living in the world, troubled with these dogmas, ²¹ "Touch not; taste not; handle not;" ²² which all tend to corruption by this improper use according to the injunctions and doctrines of those men.

⁴ nor pay attention to fables and endless genealogies, which rather promote disputes than the godly edification, which is by faith:

¹ But the spirit saith expressly that in latter times some will apostatise from this belief, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines concerning demons, ² through the hypocrisy of liars, who have their own conscience seared, ³ forbidding marriage, and enjoining an abstinence from meats which God hath created to be partaken of with thankfulness by the faithful, and by them who are convinced of this truth,

⁶ By suggesting these things to the brethren thou wilt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished by the words of this belief, and this good doctrine, which thou hast followed. ⁷ But as for vain and groundless fables, reject them, and exercise thyself for godliness.

²⁰ But wouldst thou, vain man, know that belief without works is dead?

¹⁸ For I testify to every one who heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any one addeth to these things God will lay on him the plagues written of in this book;

²⁸ And Michaias said, If thou return in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me.

⁹ And he said, "Go and say to this people; hearing you shall hear, though you may not understand: and seeing you shall see, though you may not perceive:

³ Incline your ears and follow in my paths; hearken to me and your soul shall live on good things; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant; the gracious promises to David which are faithful.

¹⁹ When any one heareth the doctrine of the kingdom and doth not mind it, the evil one cometh and snatcheth away what was sown in his heart. This is the meaning of that sown on the highway.

¹⁵ Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in a holy place, [reader attend!]

¹⁴ Then having called to him the whole multitude he said to them, Hearken to me, all of you, and understand. ¹⁵ There is nothing from without, which by entering into a man can defile him; but the things which proceed from within him, are those which defile a man.

⁴⁵ Then in the hearing of all the people he said to his discipies, ⁴⁶ Beware of the Scribes, who are fond of walking in robes, and love salutations in places of public resort, and the first seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost places at entertainments; ⁴⁷ who devour the families of widows, and for a disguise make long prayers. They shall receive a severer sentence of judgment.

⁴⁵ Then he opened their minds that they might understand the scriptures,

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of the glory, would give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the acknowledgment of him

⁹ For this cause, we indeed, from the day we heard of it do not cease praying for you, and requesting, in order that you may be filled, in respect to the acknowledgment of his will

⁵ And if any of you wanteth wisdom, let him ask it of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it will be given him.

⁷ Is not his mouth full of cursing, and bitterness and deceit?

² They spoke vanities one to another: their lips are deceitful, they spoke with a double heart:

² Thy tongue is like a sharp razor: thou hast practised deceit. ³ Thou hast loved evil more than good; lying more than speaking the truth. ⁴ Thou hast loved all the decrees of destruction; a tongue practised in deceit.

³ From the womb the wicked are in a state of alienation, they have gone astray from their birth; they spoke lies. ⁴ They have a venom like that of a serpent; like that of a deaf adder which stoppeth its ears;

²³ whom hast thou reproached and provoked? Or against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, [without lifting up thine eye to the Holy One of Israel?]

³ For your hands are polluted with blood, and your fingers with sins; your lips have spoken iniquity, and your tongue contriveth injustice. ⁴ None speaketh just things, nor is there any just judgment. They trusted in vanities and they speak lies. Because they hatch mischief, therefore they bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatched the eggs of asps, and are weaving a spider's web; and he who was about to eat some of their eggs, upon breaking one that was hatched found therein a viper.

¹³ We have sinned: we have lied, and turned back from following our God; we have spoken things unjust, and have been disobedient; we have conceived and meditated from our heart lying words, ¹⁴ we have indeed turned judgment backward, therefore saving mercy standeth aloof." [p] Because truth was destroyed in their ways and; they could not walk in straight paths; ¹⁵ and truth was removed and they substituted opinion in place of knowledge, therefore the Lord took a view, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

³ and have bent their tongue like a bow; lying and infidelity prevailed in the land; because they have proceeded from evils to evils, and have not known me, saith the Lord; ⁴ be upon your guard every man against his neighbour, and in your own brothers place no confidence; for every brother will supplant, and every friend walk deceitfully; ⁵ every one will treat his friend with contempt. They cannot speak truth; their tongue hath learned to speak lies. They have done injustice, and have not stopped to rectify it. ⁶ There is usury upon usury, deceit upon deceit; they refused to know me, saith the Lord:

³⁴ Brood of vipers! how can you who are evil speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ³⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produceth good things; and the bad man, out of his bad treasure produceth bad things. ³⁶ Now I assure you in respect to every idle word which men shall utter, they shall give an account thereof in a day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shall be condemned.

¹⁸ And that what proceed from the mouth come from the heart, and that these defile the man? ¹⁹ For out of the heart come malicious surmises, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, calumnies. ²⁰ These are the things which defile the man: but to eat with unwashen hands doth not defile the man.

¹⁵ There is nothing from without, which by entering into a man can defile him; but the things which proceed from within him, are those which defile a man.

³⁸ And when the Pharisee who saw this expressed surprise that he had not first washed before dinner, ³⁹ the Lord said to him, Now as for you Pharisees, yon cleanse the outside of the cup and plate; but as to the inside, it is full of your rapacity and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Unthinking men! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ But with respect to the things in it, give alms, and behold they are all clean to you.

¹⁴ Whereupon Peter said, By no means, Lord. For I have never eaten any thing common or unclean. ¹⁵ And a voice said to him a second time, What God hath cleansed call not thou that common.

⁸ But I said, By no means, Lord; For nothing common or unclean hath ever entered my mouth. ⁹ Thereupon a voice from heaven addressed me a second time, saying, What God hath cleansed, call not thou that common.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre. With their tongues they practised deceit. The poison of asps is under the lips of them, ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

¹⁴ I know and am fully assured by the Lord Jesus; that nothing is of itself unclean. But to him who thinketh any thing unclean, to him it is unclean.

¹⁷ For the reign of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in a holy spirit.

²⁰ Do not for the sake of food destroy the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but they are an evil to a man who eateth for a stumbling block.

⁴ that every thing which God created is good, and nothing to be rejected; for when taken with thankfulness ⁵ it is sanctified by the permission of God and prayer.

¹⁵ To the pure, all things are indeed pure but to the polluted and unbelieving, nothing is pure. Their mind and conscience are polluted:

⁵ So also the tongue is a very small member, yet it boasteth great things. See what a great pile of wood a little fire kindleth to a flame! ⁶ Now, the tongue is a fire, the leader of iniquity; the tongue is set among the members, staining the whole body, and setting the wheel of nature in a blaze, when it is itself set in a blaze by hell. ⁷ For all kinds of beasts, and birds, and reptiles, and fishes, are subdued and have been subdued by man; ⁸ But the tongue of man none can subdue. It is an ungovernable monster: it is full of deadly poison.

¹⁸ For uttering, with a solemn tone, swelling words of vanity, they by the lusts of the flesh. by acts of lasciviousness, ensnare them who are indeed flying from those conversant in error;

¹³ So the messenger who went to call Michaias, spoke to him saying, Behold all the prophets with one mouth speak good things concerning the king, conform, I pray thee, thy words to the words of every of them, and speak good things. ¹⁴ To which Michaias replied, As the Lord liveth, whatever the Lord shall say to me, that will I speak.

²⁷ However, that we may not offend them, go to the sea, and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that cometh up; and having opened its mouth thou wilt find a stater: take that and give it to them for me and thee.

³² Conduct yourselves so as to give no offence to Jews or Greeks, or the congregation of God, ³³ even as I do. In all things I please all men, not studying barely my own interest, but that of the many, that they may be saved.

³ giving no offence in any thing that the office may not be blamed;

⁵ yield for a moment any submission to them, that the truth of the glad tidings might continue with you.

¹⁷ Now the wisdom which cometh from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹³ Being planted by the house of the Lord they shall flourish in the courts of our God.

²¹ And thy people shall be all righteous, they shall inherit the land forever, preserving the plant, the works of their hands, for glory.

³ that to the mourners in Sion may be given, glory instead of ashes, oil of joy to the mourners, robes of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called generations of righteousness, a plant of the Lord for glory.

⁴⁰ As the darnel therefore is gathered and burned with fire, so shall it be at the conclusion of this age. ⁴¹ The son of man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all the stumbling blocks, and the workers of iniquity,

² Every branch in me which beareth not fruit, he loppeth off; and every branch which beareth fruit he cleaneth to make it more fruitful.

⁶ if any one continueth not in me he is thrown away as the branch is when it is withered. Such indeed are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned.

⁹ For we are fellow labourers belonging to God; you are God's field; you are his building.

¹² Now if upon this foundation any one buildeth gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; ¹³ the work of every one will be made manifest; for the day will shew it: Because it is revealed with fire, therefore the fire will prove every one's work of what sort it is. ¹⁴ If any one's work which he hath built upon it, shall stand the test, he will receive a reward. ¹⁵ If any one's work be consumed he will lose that; but he shall himself be saved but so as through fire.

¹⁶ Still there will be deceivers, who will call this people happy, and lead them astray, that they may devour them;

¹⁹ [J] Who indeed is blind but my servants? And deaf, but those who rule over them? Even the servants of God are become blind.

¹⁰ you see that they are all blind; that they have not knowledge. They are dumb dogs, they cannot bark: they are asleep in bed, they love to slumber:

³¹ land. The prophets prophesy falsehoods, and the priests clapped with their hands, and my people loved to have it so. Now what will you do in regard to the consequences?

¹⁵ Were they ashamed because they failed? even in that case they were not ashamed; nor were they sensible of their infamy; therefore they shall fall in the common ruin; and in the time of visitation they shall perish, saith the Lord.

⁹ And with respect to that prophet when he shall have wandered and spoken; I the Lord have caused that prophet to wander, and I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel. ¹⁰ And they shall bear their iniquity; the inquirer according to his guilt, and in like manner the prophet according to his

¹⁷ Ephraim associating with idols, laid stumbling blocks for himself.

⁶ Therefore from vision you shall have night; and from prophesying you shall have darkness. And the sun shall set upon the prophets, and upon them the day shall darken: ⁷ and the seers of dreams shall be put to shame; and the diviners shall be laughed to scorn, and reviled by all; for none will hearken to them.

⁸ but as for you, you have turned aside out of the way and weakened many by law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord Almighty,

¹⁶ Alas for you, blind guides, who say, to swear by the temple is not binding; but to swear by the gold of the temple is binding. ¹⁷ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gold? Or the temple which halloweth the gold? ¹⁸ And, to swear by the altar doth not bind; but to swear by the gift thereon is binding. ¹⁹ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gift? Or the altar which halloweth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all on it. ²¹ And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by him who dwelleth therein. ²² And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. ²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel.

³⁹ Then he spake a parable to them; Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?

⁵ preposterous studies of men whose minds are corrupt and devoid of truth, who suppose this religion to be a matter of gain. From such withdraw thyself.

¹ Now there were also false prophets among the people, as there will be also among you false teachers, who will introduce destructive sects, denying even the Lord who bought them, bringing on themselves speedy destruction.

¹⁷ They are wells without water; clouds impelled by a whirlwind, for whom is reserved in the bowels of the earth the gloom of everlasting darkness.

²⁰ And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet who did these signs before him by which he led astray them who had received the mark of the beast, and them who worshipped his image. Both these were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone;

¹⁵ but without are the dogs and the sorcerers and the prostitutes and the murderers and the idolaters and every one who loveth and practiseth falsehood.

³⁶ Then Jesus dismissed the multitude and went into the house, and his disciples came to him and said, Explain to us the parable of the darnel in the field.

³⁴ but without a parable he did not speak to them. And in private he explained all to his disciples.

¹⁷ And when he withdrew from the multitude into a house, his disciples asked him concerning this parable.

²⁹ His disciples say to him, Behold now thou speakest plainly and usest no parable.

⁹ [f] "To whom, [say they] have we announced evils? And to whom have we announced a message; we who have been weaned from milk, we who have been withdrawn from the breasts? ¹⁰ Expect affliction on affliction; hope on hope, yet a little While: yet a little while.

⁵¹ Jesus saith to them, Have you understood all these? They say to him, Yes, Master.

¹⁰ Then having called the multitude to him, he said to them, Hear and understand;

⁹ Have you yet no reflection? Or do ye not remember the five loaves among the five thousand, and how many panniers you carried off;

¹¹ How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you of bread, when I cautioned you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees?

⁵² For they had not come to a right understanding by the loaves. For their understanding was callous.

¹⁸ Whereupon he saith to them, Are you also so void of understanding? Do you not perceive that nothing which entereth into a man from without can defile him;

¹⁷ Jesus, perceiving this, saith to them, Why do you imagine that it is because you have not bread? Are you yet so void of sense and understanding? Have you hearts still callous? ¹⁸ Having eyes do you not see? And having ears do you not hear? And have you no memory?

³² But they did not comprehend the meaning of this, and were afraid to ask him.

⁴⁵ But they did not know the meaning of this. It was hid from them so that they did not understand it; and they were afraid to ask him the meaning of that expression.

³⁴ But they understood nothing of these things. This matter indeed was hid from them, so that they did not comprehend the meaning of what was spoken.

¹² For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need of some one to teach you over again the first elements of the oracles of God, and have need of milk and not strong food: 13 for every one who useth milk is unskilled in the doctrine of justification, for he is a babe,

²⁷ And having pulled down the pillars of Baal they made it a jakes even to this day.

¹⁹ Every tree which beareth not good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. ²⁰ So then by their fruits you will know them.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good. And the bad man out of the bad treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is bad. For from the overflowing of the heart the mouth speaketh.

¹³ Meats are for the belly, and the belly for meats! But God will put a stop to the operation of both; But as for the body, it is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body:

⁶ Now, the tongue is a fire, the leader of iniquity; the tongue is set among the members, staining the whole body, and setting the wheel of nature in a blaze, when it is itself set in a blaze by hell.

¹³ According to the old proverb, From the wicked will proceed transgression. So let not my hand be upon thee.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He would not be wise to do good.

¹² A man void of understanding, and a transgressor, walketh in ways which are not good.

³² The lips of righteous men distil graces; but the mouth of the wicked is perverse.

² The tongue of the wise knoweth good things; but the mouth of fools poureth out evils.

²⁸ The hearts of the righteous study faithfulness: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. The ways of the righteous are acceptable to the Lord: and by them enemies are made friends.

³⁴ Brood of vipers! how can you who are evil speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

¹¹ It is not that which goeth into the mouth which defileth the man; but it is that which cometh out of the mouth, which defileth the man.

²² Whereupon he Saith to him, Out of thine own mouth I will condemn thee, thou malignant slave. Thou knowest that I am an austere man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping what I did not sow!

These things, my brethren, ought not to be so.

⁵ And to it was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies. And power was given it to make war forty-two months. ⁶ And it opened its mouth for blasphemy against God, to slander his name and his tabernacle and them, who dwell in heaven.

⁵ So when the Lord God saw that the wickedness of the men on the earth was multiplied, and that every one was in his heart studiously and continually bent upon evils,

²¹ And the Lord God smelled a sweet savour, and the Lord God having come to a determination, said, "I will no more curse the ground on account of the works of men. Though the imagination of man is studiously bent upon evils from his youth, I will not on that account again smite all living flesh, as I have done.

¹¹³ SAMECH. I have hated transgressors and loved thy law.

²³ Guard thy heart with all diligence; for out of these are the issues of life.

¹⁴ his depraved heart contriveth mischief. Such a one is continually raising tumults in a city.

¹⁵ Folly is bound up in the heart of a child: but a rod and instruction will drive it from him.

⁹ Death meeteth the uninstructed and a fool dieth by sins.

⁷ let the wicked man forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man his counsels, and turn to the Lord and he shall find mercy; for he will abundantly pardon your sins.

⁷ Their feet are running to evil; they are swift to shed blood. And their reasonings are reasonings for murders. Destruction and misery are in their ways,

¹⁴ Jerusalem! wash thy heart from wickedness that thou mayst be saved. How long do ill grounded reasonings for thy troubles remain in thee?

⁹ [p] The heart is deep beyond all things; so also is a man, who then can know Him?

⁴ But Jesus knowing their thoughts, said, Why do ye harbour evil thoughts in your hearts?

²² Repent therefore of this wickedness of thine; and beseech God, if indeed this thought of thy heart can be forgiven thee.

¹⁰ as it is written, "There is none righteous, no, not one. ¹¹ There is none who hath understanding. There is none who seeketh God. ¹² They are all gone aside; They are all together become vile; There is none who doth good; no, not one. ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre. With their tongues they practised deceit. The poison of asps is under the lips of them, ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. ¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood. ¹⁶ Destruction and misery are in their ways. ¹⁷ And the way of peace they did not know. ¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes". ¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God.

¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, good doth not dwell. For to will is present with me, but the performance of what is good, I do not find.

⁷ Because the bent of the flesh is enmity to God, [for it is not in subjection to the law of God, nor indeed can be,] ⁸ they therefore who are in a carnal state cannot please God.

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest"they are these"adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, fascinations, enmities, strifes, emulations, .animosities, contentions, factions, sects, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and the like, of which I forewarn you, as I have indeed before declared that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God:

¹ And with respect to you, when you were dead in those trespasses, and those sins, ² in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world; according to the prince of the power of the air, that spirit which is now working powerfully in the children of disobedience; ³ among whom when we also were all formerly leading our lives in the desires of our flesh, executing the dictates of the flesh, and the imaginations, and were naturally children of wrath even as the rest;

² to revile no one; not to be quarrelsome; to be gentle, shewing all meekness to all men. ³ For we, even we ourselves were formerly foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to divers lusts and pleasures living in malice and envy, objects of hatred, hating one another; ⁴ but when the kindness and love of God our saviour for man was brightly displayed, ⁵ not for works of righteousness which we had done, but according to his own mercy; he saved us by a bath of regeneration, and a renewal of a holy spirit, ⁶ which he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our saviour,

¹³ Let no one when tempted say, I am tempted of God. For God cannot be tempted by evil, neither doth he tempt any one. ¹⁴ But every one is tempted by his own desire, when allured and ensnared. ¹⁵ In that case desire having conceived, bringeth forth sin, and sin, when grown up, produceth death.

² Why do thy disciples transgress the doctrine of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.

²⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate; but on the inside they are full of rapine, and intemperance. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean.

³ For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, holding the doctrine of the elders, do not eat with out washing the hands with the doubled fist: ⁴ and if they come from the market they do not eat without dipping them. And there are many other usages which they have adopted, such as the dipping of cups, and pots, and brass vessels, and couches.

¹⁶ Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth in you? ¹⁷ If any one corrupt the temple of God, him God will destroy; for the temple of God is holy.

⁹ Do you not know that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the voluptuous, nor sodomites, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor such as indulge inordinate desires, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ Now such some of you were; but, you have washed yourselves; but you are hallowed, but you are acquitted by the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God.

¹⁸ Flee fornication. Every other sin, which a man committeth, is without the body; but he who committeth whoredom sinneth against his own body. ¹⁹ Do you not know that your body is a temple of a holy spirit in you, which you have from God? Indeed you are not your own; ²⁰ for you have been bought with a price. Therefore glorify God with your body and with your spirit which are his.

³ And let not fornication, nor uncleanness of any sort, nor inordinate desire, be so much as named among you, as becometh saints; ⁴ nor obscenity, nor foolish talking, nor jesting about things which are unbecoming; but rather thanksgiving. ⁵ For this you know that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor lewd libertine, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and God. ⁶ Let no one deceive you with vain discourses; for on the account of these things the wrath of God is coining on these children of disobedience,

⁸ but the cowards and the unbelieving and abominable and murderers and prostitutes, and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their portion in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone. This is the second death.

²⁷ And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing which defileth or maketh an abomination or [uttereth] a lie; none but they who are enrolled in the Lamb's book of life.

¹³ Zabulon shall dwell by the sea; And he will be near the haven of ships, And will extend as far as Sidon.

⁸ and the Lord delivered them into the hands of Israel, and they pursued them with slaughter, to great Sidon, and to Maseron, and to the plains of Massoch, eastward, and hewed them down till there was none of them left alive.

⁶ all the inhabitants of the hilly country, from Libanus to Masereth-memphomaim; all the Sidonians; them I will myself drive out from before Israel; but distribute thou it, by lot, to Israel, as I have commanded thee.

²⁸ and Elbon, and Raab, and Ememaon, and Kanthan, till it reached great Sidon; ²⁹ Then the boundary is to turn up to Rama, and to the fountain Masphasset, and the Tyrians; Then the boundary is to turn up to Jasiph; and the termination of it is to be the sea, including Apoleb, and Echozob,

³¹ Neither did Aser drive out the inhabitants of Akcho; but it became tributary to them; nor the inhabitants of Dor; nor the inhabitants of Sidon; nor the inhabitants of Dalaph; nor the Aschazites; nor the Chebdaites; nor the Naites; nor the Ereoites.

⁵ These twelve Jesus sent forth, having given them a charge, saying, Go not away to the Gentiles, nor enter a city of the Samaritans; ⁶ but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel:

²¹ Alas for thee Chorazin! Alas for thee Bethsaida! For had the miracles, which have been performed in you, been done in Tyre and Sidon they would have repented long ago in sack cloth and ashes. ²² But I say to you, the condition of Tyre and Sidon will in a day of judgment, be more tolerable than yours. ²³ And thou Capernaum, which hast been exalted to heaven, shalt be brought down to the mansion of the dead; for if the miracles, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

²⁴ Then he arose and went from that place to the confines of Tyre and Sidon. And having entered the house he desired that none should know. But he could not be concealed. ²⁵ For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell at his feet ²⁶ [now the woman was a Greek, a native of Syrophoenicia] and intreated him to expel the demon out of her daughter. ²⁷ But Jesus said to her, Let the children first be satisfied; for it is not seemly to take the children's bread and cast it to the dogs. ²⁸ To which she, in reply, said to him, True, sir; but still the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs. ²⁹ Thereupon he said to her, For this saying, Go home. The demon is gone out of thy daughter. ³⁰ So, going home, she found the demon was gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.

²⁴ And the fame of him spread through all Syria; and they brought to him all their sick, seized and tormented with various distempers"demoniacs, and lunatics and paralytics, and he cured them.

²⁷ As Jesus was departing thence, two blind men followed him, with loud outcries, saying, Son of David, take pity on us.

¹⁵ O sir, have pity on my son; for he is afflicted with an epilepsy, and suffereth grievously. For he often falleth into the fire and often into the water.

³⁰ And lo! two blind men who sat by the way side, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried, saying, Have pity on us, O master, son of David. ³¹ And when the people reprimanded them that they might hold their peace, they cried the louder, saying, Have pity on us, O master, son of David.

⁴² saying, What think ye concerning the Christ? Whose Son is he? They say to him, David's. ⁴³ He saith to them, How then doth David by the spirit call him Lord; saying, ⁴⁴ "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool." ⁴⁵ If then David calleth him Lord: how is he his son?

I spoke indeed to thy disciples to cast it out, but they could not. ¹⁹ Thereupon Jesus, in reply to him, saith, O faithless generation! How long shall I be with you? How long am I to endure you! And soon as he saw Jesus, the spirit threw him into convulsions; and, falling on the ground, he rolled about and foamed. ²¹ And Jesus asked his father, How long since this befel him? And he said, From his childhood. ²² And oft times it hath cast him into fire, and into waters to destroy him. But if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us and help us.

¹³ and cried with a loud voice, saying, Jesus, master, have pity,on us.

¹³ But the publican, who stood at a distance, did not presume so much as to lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying; God, be merciful to me a sinner.

³⁸ he cried, saying, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. ³⁹ Upon this they who went before checked him that he might hold his peace; but he cried still the louder, Son of David, have pity on me.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Christ. But others said', Doth the Christ come out of Galilee? ⁴² Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the town whence David was?

⁷ And when Joseph saw his brothers he knew them and was reserved and spoke harshly to them and said to them, Whence come you? And they said, From the land of Chanaan to buy food.

² and thou shalt keep in remembrance all the way which the Lord thy God led thee in the wilderness, that he might afflict thee, and prove thee, and know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or not.

¹ A Psalm of David. To thee, Lord, I have cried: O my God, pass me not by in silence. Shouldst thou pass me by in silence: I shall be like them who go down to the pit.

⁸ Though I scream and cry, he shut out my prayer.

¹⁵ And towards evening his disciples accosted him, saying, This is a desert place and the hour is now past, dismiss the multitude that they may go to the villages and buy themselves victuals.

⁴⁷ And when he heard that it is Jesus, the Nazarene, he began to cry aloud, and say, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. ⁴⁸ And many rebuked him, that he should hold his peace; but he cried the louder, Son of David, have pity on me.

⁶ We all like sheep had strayed; every man wandered in his way: and the Lord delivered him up for our sins:

⁶ My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds caused them to stray. On the mountains they caused them to wander. From mountain to hill they roamed. They forgot their place of rest. ⁷ All that found them devoured them. Their enemies said, "Let us not spare them because they sinned against the Lord." He who gathered their fathers hath a pasture of righteousness:

⁵ so that my flock is dispersed for want of shepherds, and is become a prey to all the wild beasts of the field. ⁶ On every mountain and on every high hill my sheep are scattered, and dispersed over the face of the earth; and there is none who seeketh or bringeth them back.

¹⁶ I will seek the lost, and bring back the stray; and bind up the bruised and strengthen the weak: and I will watch the strong, and feed them with judgment.

²³ And I will set up over them one shepherd who shall feed them, even my servant David, who shall be their shepherd:

³⁶ And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them because they were fainty and forlorn, like sheep without a shepherd.

²⁵ You are the children of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham "And by thy seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed." ²⁶ It is to you first that God, having raised up his son Jesus, hath sent him, blessing you, when you turn every one from his iniquities.

⁴⁶ Whereupon Paul and Barnabas with great freedom of speech said, It was necessary that the word of God should be first spoken to you. But since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of this everlasting life, behold we turn to the Gentiles

⁸ Now I say that, for the truth of God, Jesus Christ became the minister of circumcision, to confirm the promises made to the fathers;

²⁶ And he said to him, Let me go: for the dawn approached. But Jacob said I will not let thee go unless thou bless me.

⁴ He indeed wrestled with an angel and prevailed. Have they wept or have they supplicated me? Have they found me in the house of On? Or have they been spoken to there?

² And lo! a leper came and prostrated himself before him, and said, Sir, if thou wilt, thou canst cleanse me.

³³ And they who were in the vessel came and bowed down to him, saying, Thou art indeed Son of God.

¹ Then he addressed them with a parable, to shew them that they ought to persevere in prayer, and not be discouraged; ² saying, There was in a certain city a judge, who neither feared God, nor regarded man. ³ And there was in that city a widow, who went to him, saying, Do me justice on mine adversary. ⁴ And for a while he would not. But afterwards he said within himself, Though I neither fear God, nor regard man, ⁵ yet because this widow giveth me trouble, I will do her justice, that she may not, by coming perpetually, torment me. ⁶ And the Lord said, Hear what this unjust judge saith! ⁷ And will not God vindicate the cause of his chosen, who are crying to him day and night"? Will he linger in their cause? ⁸ He will, I assure you, vindicate their cause speedily. But will the son of man, when he cometh, find this belief in this land"?

⁶ Give not that which is holy to dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine; lest they trample them under foot, and turning tear you.

²¹ And he said to me, Depart, for I will send thee to far distant nations. ²² Now till that Word they had continued listening to him; then they raised their voice saying, Away with such a one from the earth, for it is not fit that he should live.

⁴ who are Israelites, to whom belonged the adoption and the glory, and the covenants, and the civil government, and the religious service, and the promises;

¹⁵ We who are by nature Jews, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

¹² that you were at that time without Christ; aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, having no hope, and being without God in the world:

² Beware of the dogs; beware of the evil workers; beware of the concision;

¹⁰ let me be satisfied with all the kindness and with all the truth which thou hast shewn to thy servant. For with this staff of mine I crossed the Jordan, but now I am become two camps.

⁴ Why should I continue the debate any further? I stand corrected for commencing a suit against the Lord. On hearing such things, what answer can I, who am nothing, make to Thee? I will lay my hand on my mouth. ⁵ Once I have spoken, but I will not proceed a second time. I heard of Thee before, with the hearing of the ear; but now mine eye hath seen Thee, therefore I abhor myself, and am ready to drop into dissolution, and account myself as dust and ashes.

² I know that thou canst do all things, and that with thee nothing is impossible. ³ Who indeed can conceal counsel from thee? Though he forbeareth to speak, can he think to hide it from thee? But who will tell me those things which I did not know; those great and wonderful things which I did not understand. ⁴ Hear me, O Lord, that I may speak. And let me ask, and do thou teach me. ⁵ I heard of thee before, with the hearing of the ear; but now mine eye hath seen thee, ⁶ therefore I abhor myself, and am ready to drop into dissolution, and account myself as dust and ashes.

⁴ Against thee especially I have sinned; and in thy sight done this evil. So that thou must be justified in thine acts, and must overcome, when thou art judged. ⁵ For behold I was born in iniquity; in sins my mother conceived me:

⁶³ that thou mayst remember and be ashamed, and never more be able to open thy mouth, because of thy confusion when I make a complete atonement for thee according to all that thou hast done, saith the Lord.

¹⁸ incline, my God, thine ear and hear. Open thine eyes and behold our desolation and that of thy city which is called by thy name. For we do not for our own righteousness present our piteous case before thee; but we cast ourselves upon thy tender mercies, Lord, which are many.

⁴⁵ that you may be the children of your Father in heaven: for he causeth the sun to rise on bad and good, and sendeth the rain on just and unjust.

⁸ In reply to which the centurion said, Sir, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof; but only speak a word and my servant will be cured.

⁶ So Jesus went with them. But when he was now at no great distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying, Sir, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof: ⁷ and for that reason I did not think myself worthy to come to thee. Say but a word, and my servant will be healed.

¹⁸ I will rise and go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight, ¹⁹ and am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

²¹ desirous indeed to be fed with the crumbs which fell from his table: and moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

⁴⁰ Upon which the other, in reply, rebuked him, saying, Hast thou no fear of God even when thou art suffering the same punishment? ⁴¹ We indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our crimes. But this man hath done nothing amiss. ⁴² Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest to thy kingdom.

⁴ No, by no means. Yea, let God be true, though every man be a liar, as it is written, " So that thou must be justified in thy acts and must overcome when thou art judged."

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God.

²⁹ Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not also [the God] of the Gentiles? Yes, of Gentiles also:

¹² For there is no distinction of Jew and Greek; for he is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call upon him;

⁸ and, last of all, he was seen also by me, who am as it were one born out of due time; ⁹ for I am the very least of the apostles, and am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the congregation of God.

⁸ To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this favour was granted to proclaim among the nations the unsearchable riches of the Christ,

¹⁹ and to know the love of the Christ which surpasseth that knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fulness of God.

¹³ who was before a reviler, and a persecutor, and an outrageous offender: but I obtained mercy because I acted ignorantly, in unbelief. ¹⁴ And this favour of our Lord superabounded with faith and love which is by Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ This is a faithful word and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am a chief;

³⁰ For this cause, thus saith the Lord the God of Israel, I said, Thy house, and the house of thy father, shall go out before me for ever; but now the Lord saith, Far be this from me; for I will honour them only who honour me. And he who despiseth me shall be despised.

¹⁵ Though the Almighty, as he hath begun, may subdue me: yet I will speak and plead before him.

¹⁰ For he already knoweth my way and hath tried me like gold.

¹⁹ He will fulfil the desire of them who fear him: he will hear their prayer and save them.

³² because he who hath humbled will have compassion, even according to the multitude of his mercies.

¹⁰ Upon hearing this Jesus expressed admiration, saying to them who followed him, Verily I say to you, I have not found even in Israel such a belief.

¹³ Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go thy way and be it done for thee as thou hast believed. And that very instant his servant was cured.

²² And Jesus turned about and when he saw her, said, Daughter, take courage; thy faith hath cured3 thee. And from that instant the woman was cured.

²⁹ Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your belief, be it to you. ³⁰ Whereupon their eyes were opened. Then Jesus restrained them, saying, See that none know this.

³¹ And Jesus immediately stretched forth his hand and took hold of him, saying, Distrustful man, why didst thou doubt?

³⁴ Whereupon he said to her, Daughter, thy faith hath cured thee. Go in peace, and continue cured of that disorder of thine.

²³ Thereupon Jesus said to him, With regard to this canst thou believe? All things are possible for him who believeth. ²⁴ Upon which the father of the child immediately cried out, and with tears said, I do believe: Help, O sir, my unbelief.

⁹ When Jesus heard this, he admired him; and turning to the multitude that followed him, he said, I say to you, I have not found such an instance of faith even in Israel.

⁵⁰ Thereupon he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee, Go in peace.

⁵ Upon this the disciples said to the Lord, Increase our faith.

⁴² Then Jesus said to him, Have sight. Thy faith hath cured thee. ⁴³ And instantly he received his sight, and followed him, praising God. And all the people, when they saw this, gave praise to God.

⁵⁰ Jesus saith to him, Go home: thy son liveth. And the man believed the word which Jesus spake to him, and went away. ⁵¹ And as he was going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. ⁵² Whereupon he inquired of them at what hour he began to mend. And they told him, that yesterday, at seven o'clock, the fever left him. ⁵³ So the father knew that it was the very time when Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth, and he and his whole family believed.

¹⁹ and far from being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body now become dead, he being then in his hundredth year; nor the deadness of Sarah's womb. ²⁰ He disputed not against the promise of God by unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God,

³ We ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as it is fit; because your faith increaseth exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all towards one another aboundeth:

³ comprehending Araba, to the east side of the sea of Cheneroth, and to the sea of Araba, the east side of the salt sea, the way in front of Aseimoth, that leading from Thaiman, at the foot of Asedoth Phasga:

¹ But he who is in distress for a season shall not be abandoned to despair. Drink this first; do it quickly. With regard to the region of Zabulon, the land of Nephthaleim and the rest who inhabit the sea shore, and the banks of the Jordan, Galilee of the nations;

¹⁸ Now as Jesus was walking along the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a drag net into the sea; for they were fishermen;

¹ On seeing these multitudes he went up to the mount and sat down, and his disciples came to him,

² but such great multitudes flocked to him that he went on board the vessel and sat down, and all the multitude stood on the shore,

²⁹ When Jesus left that place he came nigh to the sea of Galilee, and having ascended the mountain, he sat down there, ³⁰ and great multitudes flocked to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the dumb, the cripple and many others, whom they laid at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them; ³¹ insomuch that the people beheld with amaze the dumb speaking, the cripple sound, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they glorified the God of Israel.

¹⁶ And as he was walking along the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew his brother, casting a drag net, into the sea; for they were fishermen;

³¹ Then, quitting the confines of Tyre and Sidon, he came again to the sea of Galilee, along the borders of Decapolis. ³² And they bring to him a man who was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech, and beseech him to lay his hands on him. ³³ Whereupon he taketh him apart from the multitude, and put his fingers in his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue; ³⁴ Then, looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. ³⁵ And immediately his ears were opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spake distinctly. ³⁶ Though he commanded them not to tell any one, yet the more he enjoined them the more abundantly they proclaimed .his miracles. ³⁷ And being struck with inexpressible amazement, said, He hath done all things well, he maketh the deaf hear, and the dumb speak.

¹ And it came to pass when the people were pressing upon him to hear the word of God, as he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,

¹ After these things Jesus went away. On the coast of the sea, that of Galilee, that of Tiberias,

²³ Other vessels however came from Tiberias, nigh to the place where they had eaten bread after the Lord gave thanks

¹ After this Jesus shewed himself again to his disciples, by the sea of Tiberias, and in this manner he shewed himself.

³ who pardoneth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

⁵ Then shall be opened the eyes of the blind; and the ears of the deaf will hear. ⁶ Then will the lame bound like a hart; and the stammering tongue will speak plain. Because water is burst forth in the desert, and torrents in a thirsty land;

²³ Then Jesus went through all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the reign and curing every disease, and every malady among the people. ²⁴ And the fame of him spread through all Syria; and they brought to him all their sick, seized and tormented with various distempers"demoniacs, and lunatics and paralytics, and he cured them.

⁴ Jesus said to them, Go and tell John what you hear and see. ⁵ Blind men see, and lame walk. Lepers are cleansed and deaf hear. Dead are raised and poor have glad tidings proclaimed to them.

³⁵ And the men of that place, knowing him, sent to all the country around, and they brought to him all that were sick, ³⁶ and intreated him that they might only touch the tuft of his mantle. And as many as touched were perfectly cured.

³² And in the evening, when the sun was set, they brought to him all their sick, and those who were possessed by demons. ³³ And the whole city was assembled at the door. ³⁴ And he healed many who were sick of various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he permitted not the demons to say they knew him.

⁵⁴ And on their going out of the vessel the people knew him. ⁵⁵ And, running through the whole country around, they began to bring the sick on beds, to every place where they heard he was. ⁵⁶ And wherever he entered towns, or cities, or villages, they laid the sick in the streets, and begged that they might but touch the tuft of his mantle. And as many as touched were cured.

¹⁷ And having come down with them, he stopped in a plain, with a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him, and to be cured of their diseases ¹⁸ Even they who were infested by unclean spirits were also cured. ¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him, because power went forth from him, and healed all.

²¹ Now at that very time he was curing many of diseases, and maladies, and evil spirits, and graciously bestowing sight to many who were blind. ²² And Jesus answering, said to them, Go and tell John what you have seen and heard; that the blind see; the lame walk; lepers are cleansed; deaf hear; dead are raised to life, and the poor have glad tidings proclaimed to them.

²² "Men of Israel hear these words Jesus the Nazarene, a man from God, pointed out to you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God performed by him among you, as you yourselves know.

¹⁵ so that in every street they brought out the sick and laid them on beds and couches, that the shadow of Peter as he went along might overshadow some of them. ¹⁶ But when the multitude also of the cities around flocked to Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those who were tormented with unclean spirits, who were all cured;

¹¹ And God wrought extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, ¹² so that handkerchiefs and aprons were carried from his body to them who were sick, and the diseases were removed from them, and evil spirits went out of them.

²⁸ Thereupon he said to him, Thy name shall no more be Jacob only, but Israel also shall be thy name. Since thou hast been enabled to prevail with God, therefore with men thou shalt be mighty.

²⁰ and he erected there an Altar and invoked the God of Israel.

¹⁰ and they saw the place where the God of Israel stood; and what was under his feet was like a pavement of Sapphire, and in clearness like the appearance of the firmament of heaven.

¹⁵ Then call on me in the day of trouble; and I will deliver thee and thou shalt praise me."

²³ The sacrifice of praise will glorify me; and this is the way in which I will shew him the salvation of God."

⁸ And when the multitude saw this they expressed their admiration and glorified God who had given such power to men.

³³ and the demon being expelled, the dumb man spake, and the crowds expressed their amazement, saying, Nothing like this was ever seen in Israel.

⁸ If then thy hand or thy foot occasioneth thy stumbling, cut them off and cast them from thee. It is better for thee to enter lame or maimed into life, than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the fire which is everlasting.

¹⁴ Then the blind and the lame came to him in the temple and he healed them.

¹² Thereupon he arose immediately; and having taken up the couch, went out in the presence of them all. So that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw any thing like this.

³⁷ And being struck with inexpressible amazement, said, He hath done all things well, he maketh the deaf hear, and the dumb speak.

⁴³ Therefore, if thy hand cause thee to fall, cut it off. It is better for thee to enter maimed into life, than having two hands, to go into hell, into the fire which is unextinguishable;

¹⁶ And a dread fell upon all; and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is risen up among us, and God hath visited his people.

¹³ But when thou makest an entertainment, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind,

²¹ So the servant came and told his master these things. And the master of the family, being incensed, said to his servant, Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor and the maimed, and the lame, and the blind.

¹⁵ Whereupon one of them perceiving that he was healed, returned glorifying God with a loud voice; ¹⁶ and prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, gave him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. ¹⁷ Upon this, Jesus addressing him, said, Were not the ten cleansed? Where then are the nine? ¹⁸ Have none returned to give glory to God, but only this alien?

⁴³ And instantly he received his sight, and followed him, praising God. And all the people, when they saw this, gave praise to God.

²⁴ Then they called a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.

² there was a certain man carried up who had been lame from his birth, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple, called Beauty-Gate, to ask alms of them who were going into the temple; ³ who seeing Peter and John just about to enter the temple, begged to receive an alms. ⁴ Whereupon Peter and John having fixed their eyes on him, Peter said, Look on us. ⁵ Upon which he looked earnestly at them, expecting to receive something from them. ⁶ Then Peter said, Silver and gold I have none. But what I have, that I give thee. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, rise up and walk. ⁷ Then having taken him by the right hand he raised him up. And instantly his feet and ankle bones were strengthened; ⁸ and leaping up, he stood; then walked and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. ⁹ When all the people saw him walking and praising God, ¹⁰ and recollected that he was the man who used to sit begging at the Beauty-gate of the temple, they were filled with wonder and astonishment at what had happened to him. ¹¹ And while the lame man who was cured, kept hold of Peter and John, all the people in amaze crowded to them in the portico called Solomon's.

⁸ Now at Lystra there sat a man who had no use of his feet, being a cripple from his birth, who had never walked. ⁹ This man was listening to Paul speaking, who fixing his eyes upon him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, ¹⁰ said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. Upon which he leaped up and walked.

²⁸ And one of the people addressing him said, Thy father solemnly adjured the people saying, Cursed be the man who eateth bread this day, so the people are become faint. ²⁹ And when Jonathan knew this he said, My father hath troubled the land. See how my eyes have sparkled, because I tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰ Consequently, had the people this day eaten freely of the spoils of the enemy, the slaughter among the Philistines would now have been much greater. ³¹ They had now smitten on that day those of the Philistines at Machmas, and as the people were very fainty,

¹¹ And they found an Egyptian in the field, and took him, and brought him to David, and they gave him bread, and he ate, and they gave him water to drink. ¹² Then they gave him a piece of fig cake, and when he had eaten, and his spirit was come to him; for he had not tasted bread, nor drank water for three days and three nights,

³² For about all such things the nations are solicitous: for your heavenly father knoweth that you have need of all these things. ³³ But seek first the kingdom of God, and the righteousness required by him, and all those things will be superadded to you.

⁴⁰ For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the son of man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

¹⁴ And when Jesus landed he saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick. ¹⁵ And towards evening his disciples accosted him, saying, This is a desert place and the hour is now past, dismiss the multitude that they may go to the villages and buy themselves victuals. ¹⁶ And Jesus said to them, They need not go. Give them, ye yourselves, something to eat. ¹⁷ And they said, We have here only five loaves and two fishes. ¹⁸ Whereupon he said, Bring them hither to me. ¹⁹ Then he ordered the multitude to arrange themselves, as at table, on the grass. And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven and pronounced a blessing. Then he brake and gave the loaves to the disciples and the disciples [distributed] them to the multitudes. ²⁰ And they all ate and were satisfied. And there were carried away twelve panniers full of the fragments which remained. ²¹ Now they who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

³⁴ And Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes; and instantly they received sight. And they followed him.

⁶³ and said, Sir, we have recollected that this impostor, when alive, said, After three days I shall be raised up.

¹ In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him, and saith to them, ² I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three days and have nothing to eat; ³ and if I send them home fasting, they will faint by the way, for some of them have come from afar. ⁴ Thereupon his disciples answered, Whence can they be supplied with bread here in the wilderness? ⁵ And he asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. ⁶ Then he ordered the multitude to place themselves on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, and given thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed to the multitude. ⁷ And they had a few small fishes. So, when he had pronounced a blessing, he ordered these also to be served up. ⁸ And when they had eaten, and were satisfied, the fragments which remained were carried off in seven baskets. ⁹ Now they who had eaten were about four thousand.0 And when he had dismissed them ¹⁰ he straightway embarked with his disciples, and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

¹³ And when the Lord beheld her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, Weep not.

²⁹ As for you, therefore, be not inquisitive about what you shall eat, or what you shall drink, nor agitated with restless thoughts. ³⁰ For about all these things the nations of the world are inquisitive: but your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things.

³³ And while day was coming on, Paul advised them all to take some refreshment, saying, Longing for this fourteenth day you continue fasting, having taken nothing.

²¹ Thereupon Moses said, The people among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen, yet thou hast said, I will give them flesh to eat, and they shall eat it a whole month. ²² Must the flocks and the herds be slaughtered for them? Will even these suffice? Or should all the fish of the sea be collected for them, would this be sufficient for them?

⁴² After that there came a man from Baithariso and brought to the man of God, of the first fruits twenty loaves of barley bread and some fig cakes. And he said, Give these to the people and let them eat. ⁴³ And when his servant said, Why should I set this before a hundred men? He said, Give it to the people and let them eat; for thus saith the Lord, They shall eat and leave. ⁴⁴ So they ate and left according to the word of the Lord.

³⁷ And he in reply, said to them, Supply them ye yourselves. Thereupon they say to him, Must we go and buy bread to the amount of two hundred deniars for them to eat.

⁴ Thereupon his disciples answered, Whence can they be supplied with bread here in the wilderness? ⁵ And he asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven.

¹³ But he said to them, Do you, yourselves, give them something to eat. Thereupon they said to him, We have not more than five loaves and two fishes. Must we then go and buy food for all this people?

⁵ Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming to him, saith to Philip, Whence can we buy bread to feed these people. ⁶ Now this he said to try him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. ⁷ Philip answered him, Two hundred deniars would not purchase bread enough for every one of them to take a morsel. ⁸ One of his disciples, namely Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him, ⁹ There is a lad here who hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes; but what are they among so many?

⁹ Have you yet no reflection? Or do ye not remember the five loaves among the five thousand, and how many panniers you carried off; ¹⁰ nor the seven loaves among the four thousand, and how many baskets you carried off?

⁴¹ And as they were still diffident on account of their joy, and in amaze, he said to them, Have you any food here? ⁴² Thereupon they gave him a piece of broiled fish and part of a honey comb,

⁹ As soon then as they came ashore, they see a fire of coals ready and a little fish on it, and a loaf of bread. ¹⁰ Jesus saith to them, Bring some of the fish you have now caught.

³⁹ Then he ordered them to make all the people place themselves as at table on the grass, in several companies. ⁴⁰ Accordingly they arranged themselves in rows, by hundreds and by fifties.

¹⁴ For they were about five thousand men. Then he said to his disciples, Range them as at table, in companies, fifty in a company. ¹⁵ And they did so. And when they were all ranged, ¹⁶ he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, pronounced a blessing, and broke them and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

¹⁰ Then Jesus said, Cause the men to arrange themselves on the ground. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore, to the number of about five thousand, arranged themselves on the ground.

¹³ So when you enter the city you will find him there, before he goeth up to the Bama to eat. For the people will not eat till he come; for he blesseth the sacrifice, and after that the guests eat. Now therefore go up, for to-day you will find him.

¹⁹ Then he ordered the multitude to arrange themselves, as at table, on the grass. And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven and pronounced a blessing. Then he brake and gave the loaves to the disciples and the disciples [distributed] them to the multitudes.

²⁶ Now as they were eating, Jesus having taken the loaf and pronounced a blessing, broke and gave to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; This is my body. ²⁷ Then having taken the cup and given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.

¹⁷ Then having taken a cup, he gave thanks and said, Take this and share it among yourselves.

¹⁹ Then having taken a loaf, he gave thanks, and brake and gave to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this for a remembrance of me.

³⁰ And when he was at table with them, he took the loaf, and blessed, and brake, and distributed to them.

¹¹ Then Jesus took the loaves and having given thanks, distributed to the disciples; and the disciples distributed to them who were on the ground; and in like manner of the fishes, as much as they chose.

³⁵ And having said this he took bread, and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all, and having broken it began to eat.

⁶ He who regardeth the day, regardeth it for the Lord; and he who regardeth not the day, refraineth from regarding it, for the Lord. He who eateth, eateth for the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he who eateth not, refraineth from eating, for the Lord, and he giveth God thanks.

³¹ Whether then you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

³ forbidding marriage, and enjoining an abstinence from meats which God hath created to be partaken of with thankfulness by the faithful, and by them who are convinced of this truth, ⁴ that every thing which God created is good, and nothing to be rejected; for when taken with thankfulness

⁹ because he hath satisfied the longing soul; and filled the hungry with good things.

³³ Perhaps they may faint on the road. Thereupon his disciples say to him, Whence can we get loaves enough, in a wilderness, to satisfy so great a multitude?

⁸ And when they had eaten, and were satisfied, the fragments which remained were carried off in seven baskets. ⁹ Now they who had eaten were about four thousand.0 And when he had dismissed them

¹⁹ When I brake the five loaves for the five thousand, how many panniers full of fragments did you carry off? They say to him, Twelve. ²⁰ And when I brake the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you carry off? They said, Seven. ²¹ Then he said to them, How is it that you do not understand?

⁵³ He hath filled the hungry with good things; and sent away the rich empty.

²² Then Jesus immediately constrained his disciples to embark, and cross over to the other side before him, while he dismissed the multitudes.

¹⁰ he straightway embarked with his disciples, and went to the district of Dalmanutha.
