⁷ And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them," Brood of vipers! who hath prompted you to flee from the impending wrath.

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between thee and the woman; and between thy seed and her seed. He will wound thy head, and thou wilt wound his heel."

³ From the womb the wicked are in a state of alienation, they have gone astray from their birth; they spoke lies. ⁴ They have a venom like that of a serpent; like that of a deaf adder which stoppeth its ears; ⁵ which will not hearken to the voice of charmers; nor to the charm administered by the wise. ⁶ God hath broken their teeth in their mouth: the Lord hath broken the lion's grinders.

³ But as for you, draw near hither, ye lawless sons! ye seed of adulterers and of fornication! ⁴ in what have you indulged yourselves? and at whom have you opened your mouth, and at whom lolled your tongue? are you not children of destruction; a lawless race?

⁵ They hatched the eggs of asps, and are weaving a spider's web; and he who was about to eat some of their eggs, upon breaking one that was hatched found therein a viper.

¹⁰ [p] To whom shall I speak and give warning that he may hearken? behold their ears are uncircumcised and they cannot hear. [J] Behold the word of the Lord was to them an object of reproach and they would not.

⁶ flee out of Babylon and save every one his life and be not involved, in her iniquity. For the time of her punishment is come from the Lord, and he is rendering to her a recompence.

¹⁸ When I say to the unrighteous, Thou shalt surely die, and thou hast not warned the unrighteous to turn from his ways that he may live; that unrighteous man shall die for his iniquity; but his blood I will require at thy hand. ¹⁹ But if thou hast warned the unrighteous and he will not turn from his iniquity and from his way; that unrighteous man shall die for his iniquity, and thou shalt deliver thy soul. ²⁰ So when a righteous man turneth from his righteous acts and shall commit transgression though I lay the punishment before him; he shall die. Because thou hast not warned him, though he indeed shall die for his sins [for his righteous acts will not be remembered; yet his blood I will require at thy hand. ²¹ But if thou hast warned the righteous man not to sin and he sinneth not; the righteous man shall live; and because thou hast warned him, thou shalt deliver thy soul.

³ if he upon seeing the sword coming against the land, sound the trumpet and warn the people; ⁴ and he who heareth the trumpet doth not take warning; and the sword cometh and cutteth him off; his blood shall be on his own head. ⁵ Because upon hearing the sound of the trumpet he did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself; for had he taken warning he might have saved his life. ⁶ But if the watchman, upon seeing the sword coming, doth not sound the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword cometh and taketh the life of any of them; that person is taken off because of his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman's hands. ⁷ Now, as for thee son of man, I have made thee a watchman to the house of Israel, therefore thou shalt hear a word from my mouth.

²⁰ For I say to you, Unless your righteousness exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you can in no wise enter the kingdom of the heavens.

²⁴ But the Pharisees, hearing them said, This man expelleth the demons, only by Beelzebub, the chief of the demons.

³⁴ Brood of vipers! how can you who are evil speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

¹² Then his disciples coming to him said, Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard that saying, were offended?

⁶ And Jesus said to them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

¹¹ How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you of bread, when I cautioned you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees? ¹² Then they understood that he did not caution them against the leaven of the bread, but against the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went out and consulted how they might ensnare him by a discourse.

²³ On the same day there came to him Sadducees, who say, There is no future state. And they asked him,

³⁴ Now when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they flocked about him for the same purpose.

¹³ Now alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you shut up the kingdom of the heavens against men. For you neither enter in yourselves, nor suffer them who are going in, to enter. ¹⁴ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you devour the houses of the widows; and for a pretext make long prayers. For this you shall be punished with greater severity. ¹⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, you make him doubly more a child of hell, than yourselves. ¹⁶ Alas for you, blind guides, who say, to swear by the temple is not binding; but to swear by the gold of the temple is binding. ¹⁷ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gold? Or the temple which halloweth the gold? ¹⁸ And, to swear by the altar doth not bind; but to swear by the gift thereon is binding. ¹⁹ Foolish and blind! which is greater? The gift? Or the altar which halloweth the gift? ²⁰ He therefore who sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all on it. ²¹ And he who sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it and by him who dwelleth therein. ²² And he who sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who sitteth upon it. ²³ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you pay tithe of mint, and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law; justice, mercy and fidelity. These you ought to have practised without omitting those. ²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel. ²⁵ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate; but on the inside they are full of rapine, and intemperance. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee, cleanse first what is within the cup, and the plate; so the outside will be clean. ²⁷ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like whitened sepulchres. These indeed appear beautiful on the outside; but within they are full of dead men's bones, and of all Corruption. ²⁸ In like manner you also appear outwardly to men to be righteous; but you are inwardly full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

³³ Serpents! brood of vipers! how can you escape the punishment of hell?

³ For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, holding the doctrine of the elders, do not eat with out washing the hands with the doubled fist: ⁴ and if they come from the market they do not eat without dipping them. And there are many other usages which they have adopted, such as the dipping of cups, and pots, and brass vessels, and couches. ⁵ Therefore the Pharisees and the Scribes ask him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the doctrines of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

¹⁵ And he gave them a charge, saying, Take heed; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod.

¹³ and send to him some of the Pharisees, and the Herodians, to entrap him with a speech.

¹⁸ Then came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no revival of the dead. And they asked him, saying,

⁷ Therefore to the multitudes who came out to be baptized by him, he said, Offspring of vipers! who hath warned you to flee from the impending wrath? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of this reformation: and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ⁹ Now, indeed, the axe is at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore which doth not produce good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire.

³⁰ but the Pharisees and the teachers of the law made null, with regard to themselves, the counsel of God, by not submitting to be baptized by him;

³⁹ the Lord said to him, Now as for you Pharisees, yon cleanse the outside of the cup and plate; but as to the inside, it is full of your rapacity and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Unthinking men! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ But with respect to the things in it, give alms, and behold they are all clean to you. ⁴² But alas for you, Pharisees! because you pay tithe of mint, and rue, and of all kinds of pulse, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have practised, without, however, neglecting the other. ⁴³ Alas for you, Pharisees! because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public places. ⁴⁴ Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you are like concealed graves, over which men walk without perceiving them.

¹⁴ When the Pharisees who loved money heard all these things they treated him with scorn.

¹¹ The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus, O God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; nor even as that publican.

²⁴ Now they who were sent were of the Pharisees.

⁴⁵ The officers therefore went to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who said to them, Why have you not brought him? ⁴⁶ The officers replied, Never did a man speak like this man. ⁴⁷ Thereupon the Pharisees answered them, Are you also seduced? ⁴⁸ Hath any of the chief priests believed in him, or any of the Pharisees? ⁴⁹ But this multitude, which know not the law, are accursed.

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and bent upon executing the desires of your father. He was a manslayer from the beginning, and did .not abide in the truth. Because there is no truth in him, when he speaketh falsehood he speaketh what is. natural to him, for he is a liar, and the father of it.

⁴⁰ and some of the Pharisees who were with him, when they heard this, said, Are we blind?

¹ Now while they were speaking to the people; the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, ² displeased at their teaching the people and promulgating by Jesus the resurrection from the dead, came on them,

¹⁷ the chief priest rising up, and all his party; the sect of the Sadducees, they were filled with zeal,

⁵ Thereupon some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, rose up and said, that it was necessary to circumcise those, and order them to keep the law of Moses.

³¹ Watch therefore, remembering that for the space of three years I did not cease, night nor day, with tears to warn every one.

⁶ Paul then perceiving that the one part were Sadducees; and the other Pharisees, cried aloud in the Sanhedrim, Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of a Pharisee. For a hope even of a resurrection of the dead I am now to be judged. ⁷ And on his saying this there arose a dissention between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided. ⁸ For the Sadducees say, There is no resurrection nor any angel nor spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge both. ⁹ And there was a great clamour. And the Scribes, siding with the Pharisees, arose and contended, saying, We find nothing amiss in this man. If a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

⁵ They have a prior knowledge of me from an early period, if they would testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

¹⁸ for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of the men, who by unrighteousness repress truth.

⁹ Much more therefore shall we, being now acquitted by his blood, be saved by him from the wrath;

¹⁰ and to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, namely Jesus, who delivered! us from the wrath to come

⁹ These shall suffer punishment, an everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty, ¹⁰ on the day when he shall come to be glorified by his saints, and to be admired by all those who believe that he was intrusted with this testimony of ours to you:

¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to deceive, there might be strong consolation for us who have fled to take hold of this proffered hope,

⁷ By faith Noah, when warned of unforeseen events, with a religious concern prepared an ark for the saving of his household; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of that righteousness which is by faith.

¹⁰ By this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever doth not practise righteousness is not of God, nor he who doth not love his brother.

¹⁶ saying to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall upon us, and hide us from the face of him who is sitting on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, ¹⁷ for the great day of His wrath is come and who is able to stand?"

⁹ And the great dragon was cast out that old serpent who is called The Devil and Satan who leadeth the whole world astray. He was thrown on the earth and his angels were thrown with him. ¹⁰ And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven. "Now is come salvation and the power and reign of our God and the authority of Christ himself; for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, he who accused them before our God day and night;
