⁴ In reply to which, Jesus said, It is written, "Man can live not by bread only, but by anything which God is pleased to appoint."

⁸ [Now Moses had dictated, by the Lord's giving you in the evening flesh to eat and in the morning bread in plenty, because the Lord hath heard your murmurings which you utter against us. But as for us what are we? your murmuring is not against us but against God.]

¹⁵ And when the Israelites saw this they said one to another, What is this? for they did not know what it was. Upon which Moses said to them. This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat.

³⁵ And the children of Israel ate this Manna forty years till they came to the inhabited land. They ate it till they came to the border of Phoenicia. Now the gomer is the tenth of the trimeter.

¹⁵ the festival of unleavened bread you shall carefully observe. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I have commanded you, at the time fixed in the month of new things. For in that month thou didst come out of Egypt. Thou shalt not appear before me empty.

³ And when he had afflicted thee, and suffered thee to hunger, then he fed thee with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might shew thee, that man can live not on bread only; but that man can live on any thing which God is pleased to appoint.

¹² Whereupon the woman said, as the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake baked and only about a handful of barley meal in the jar and a little oil in the vessel; and behold I was picking up a few sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my children, that we may eat and die. ¹³ And Elias said to her, Take courage, go in and do as thou hast said, but make for me a little cake of it, and bring it out first to me, and afterwards thou shalt make for thyself and thy children. ¹⁴ For thus saith the Lord, The jar of meal shall not fail, nor shall the vessel of oil diminish, until the Lord shall send rain on the land. ¹⁵ So the woman went and did so. And though she and her children ate ¹⁶ yet the jar of meal did not fail, nor was two oil in the vessel diminished, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by Elias.

⁴² After that there came a man from Baithariso and brought to the man of God, of the first fruits twenty loaves of barley bread and some fig cakes. And he said, Give these to the people and let them eat. ⁴³ And when his servant said, Why should I set this before a hundred men? He said, Give it to the people and let them eat; for thus saith the Lord, They shall eat and leave. ⁴⁴ So they ate and left according to the word of the Lord.

¹ Elisha replied, Hear a word of the Lord, Thus saith the Lord, About this time to-morrow, a measure of fine flour for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gates of Samaria. ² Upon this a nobleman on whose hand the king leaned, in reply to Elisha said, Behold should the Lord make flood gates in heaven, can such a thing be? And Elisha replied, Behold thou shalt see it with thy eyes but shalt not eat thereof.

¹⁶ When you came to measure twenty measures of barley, it was become ten. And when you went to the wine lake to draw off fifty measures, there were only twenty. ¹⁷ I smote you with blasting and mildew and hail in all the works of your hands when you turned not to me, saith the Lord. ¹⁸ Turn now your thoughts from this day forward, from this twenty fourth of the ninth month: and from the day on which the foundation of the house of the Lord is laid, ¹⁹ lay up in your minds whether that will be the case in the threshing floor? whether the vine or the fig tree or the pomegranate or the olive tree will any more be unproductive? From this very day I will bless.

⁹ and you view them again and again and supplant me. The year is ended and you have carried the products into [a] The objection, [b] The answer. your stores. ¹⁰ Now let that which hath been plundered from him be in his house. Turn now in this respect, saith the Lord Almighty: [see] if I will not open for you the flood gates of heaven and pour my blessing upon you, until there is enough; ¹¹ and send you it for food and no more destroy the fruit of your land; so that your vine shall no more be sickly in the field, saith the Lord Almighty,

⁷ Jesus said to him, It is also written, "Thou shall not try the Lord thy God."

¹⁰ Whereupon Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan: for it is written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and serve him alone.

¹⁶ And Jesus said to them, They need not go. Give them, ye yourselves, something to eat. ¹⁷ And they said, We have here only five loaves and two fishes. ¹⁸ Whereupon he said, Bring them hither to me. ¹⁹ Then he ordered the multitude to arrange themselves, as at table, on the grass. And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven and pronounced a blessing. Then he brake and gave the loaves to the disciples and the disciples [distributed] them to the multitudes. ²⁰ And they all ate and were satisfied. And there were carried away twelve panniers full of the fragments which remained. ²¹ Now they who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

³⁸ He saith to them, How many loaves have you? Go and see. And having examined, they say, Five, and two fishes. ³⁹ Then he ordered them to make all the people place themselves as at table on the grass, in several companies. ⁴⁰ Accordingly they arranged themselves in rows, by hundreds and by fifties. ⁴¹ Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and having looked up to heaven, he pronounced a blessing. Then he broke the loaves, and gave to his disciples to set before them, and distributed the two fishes among them all. ⁴² And when they had all eaten, and were satisfied, ⁴³ there were carried away twelve panniers full of the fragments, and the remains of the fishes. ⁴⁴ Now they who had eaten of the loaves were about five thousand men.

⁴ Thereupon his disciples answered, Whence can they be supplied with bread here in the wilderness? ⁵ And he asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. ⁶ Then he ordered the multitude to place themselves on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, and given thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed to the multitude. ⁷ And they had a few small fishes. So, when he had pronounced a blessing, he ordered these also to be served up. ⁸ And when they had eaten, and were satisfied, the fragments which remained were carried off in seven baskets. ⁹ Now they who had eaten were about four thousand.0 And when he had dismissed them

⁴ And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, that man can live, not by bread only, but by whatever God appointeth.

⁸ Thereupon Jesus, answering him, said, Get thee behind me, Satan, for it is written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only thou shalt serve."

¹² In reply to which, Jesus said to him, It is said," Thou shalt not try the Lord thy God."

⁵ Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming to him, saith to Philip, Whence can we buy bread to feed these people. ⁶ Now this he said to try him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. ⁷ Philip answered him, Two hundred deniars would not purchase bread enough for every one of them to take a morsel. ⁸ One of his disciples, namely Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him, ⁹ There is a lad here who hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes; but what are they among so many? ¹⁰ Then Jesus said, Cause the men to arrange themselves on the ground. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore, to the number of about five thousand, arranged themselves on the ground. ¹¹ Then Jesus took the loaves and having given thanks, distributed to the disciples; and the disciples distributed to them who were on the ground; and in like manner of the fishes, as much as they chose. ¹² And when they were satisfied, he saith to his disciples, Gather up the fragments which remain, that nothing may be lost. ¹³ So they gathered, and with the fragments, which the people after eating had left of the five barley loaves, they filled twelve panniers. ¹⁴ When these men saw the miracle which Jesus had done, they said, This is certainly the prophet"He who is coming into the world. ¹⁵ Jesus therefore knowing that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain himself alone.

³¹ Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, as it is written, "He gave them bread from heaven to eat." ³² Upon this Jesus said to them, Verily, verily I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread of heaven: ³³ for the bread of God is that which cometh down from heaven and giveth life to the world. ³⁴ Thereupon they said to him, Master, give us evermore that bread. ³⁵ Then Jesus said to them, I am the bread of that life. He who cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he who believeth in me, shall never thirst. ³⁶ But I have told you that though you have seen me, you do not believe. ³⁷ All that the Father giveth me, will come to me. And him who cometh to me I will not reject. ³⁸ For I am come down from heaven not to do mine own will, but the will of him who sent me. ³⁹ And this is the will of the Father, who sent me that of all which he hath given me, I should lose nothing, but raise it up at the last day. ⁴⁰ And this is the will of him who sent me, that every one who seeth the son, and believeth in him, may have an everlasting life, and that I raise him up at the last day. ⁴¹ The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven, ⁴² and they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then doth he say, I came down from heaven? ⁴³ Therefore Jesus answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves. ⁴⁴ No one can come to me, unless the Father, who hath sent me, draw him. And as for me, I will raise him up at the last day. ⁴⁵ It is written in the prophets, They shall be all taught of God. Every one therefore who hath heard and learned from the Father, cometh to me. ⁴⁶ Not that any one hath seen the Father, save he only who is from God. He hath seen the Father. ⁴⁷ Verily, verily, I say to you, He who believeth in me, hath an everlasting life. ⁴⁸ I am the bread of that life. ⁴⁹ Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and died. ⁵⁰ Such is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that whoever shall eat of it shall not die. ⁵¹ I am that living bread which came down from heaven. If any one eat of this bread he shall live forever. Now the bread which I will give is this flesh of mine, which I will give for the life of the world. ⁵² Upon this the Jews debated among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? ⁵³ Therefore Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you. ⁵⁴ He who eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, hath an everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁵⁵ For this flesh of mine is food indeed; and this blood of mine is indeed drink. ⁵⁶ He who eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me and I in him. ⁵⁷ As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he. who eateth me, even he will live by me. ⁵⁸ This is the bread which is come down from heaven. Not as your fathers ate the manna and died. He who eateth this bread shall live forever. ⁵⁹ These things he said in a public assembly, as he was teaching at Capernaum.

⁶³ It is the spirit which giveth life, the flesh profiteth nothing. The words which I speak to you are spirit, they are life.

⁴ For whatever was written heretofore, was written for our instruction, that we by patience and the consolation of the scripture may have hope.

¹⁷ Take also the helmet of salvation, and the sword o" the spirit, that is the word of God;
