¹⁷ Though they refused to go in, and were unmindful of thy wonders which thou hadst done among them; though they hardened their neck, and set up a head to return to their bondage in Egypt, yet thou who art a God merciful and gracious, long suffering and of great kindness, didst not forsake them utterly.

⁶ And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the God compassionate and merciful, long suffering and abundant in goodness and truth, ⁷ keeping kindness and mercy for thousands, taking away transgressions, iniquities and sins, will by no means clear the guilty, when he bringeth the transgressions of fathers on children and children s children to the third and fourth generation.

³ If we must die, why doth the Lord lead us into that land to fall in battle? Our wives and our children will be for a prey. Now therefore it is better for us to return to Egypt. ⁴ Then they said to one another, Let us appoint a leader, and return to Egypt.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Moses, How long shall this people provoke me? And how long will they disbelieve me, notwithstanding all the miracles which I have done among them?

¹⁸ "The Lord is long suffering, abundant in mercy and true, taking away iniquities, transgressions and sins; and, when he will not by purification clear the guilty, retributing the sins of fathers on children to the third and fourth generation," ¹⁹ forgive the sin of this people according to thy great mercy, as thou hast been gracious to them from Egypt even to this time.

⁴¹ Though Moses said, Why do you transgress the command of the Lord? Things will not prosper with you.

¹⁴ Thou art a chief! And thou hast brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey! and hast given us a portion of land, and vineyards! Fain wouldst thou put out the eyes of these men! We will not go up.

⁵⁷ The Lord our God be with us as he was with our fathers! May he never leave us nor forsake us!

¹¹ They indeed forgot his acts of kindness; those wonders of his which he had shewn them;

³⁸ But he being merciful forgave their sins, and would not utterly destroy them. Yea, many a time did he turn away his wrath, and would not suffer all his wrath to blaze forth;

⁴² They remembered not his hand, on the day when he rescued them out of the hand of an oppressor; ⁴³ how he had displayed his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the plain of Tanis;

⁵ for thou, Lord, art kind and gentle, and plenteous in mercy to all who invoke thee.

¹⁵ But thou, Lord God, who art merciful and gracious, long suffering and abundant in goodness and truth,

⁸ He is the Lord gracious and merciful; slow to anger and abundant in kindness; ⁹ he will not be angry to utter ruin, nor continue his wrath forever. ¹⁰ He hath not dealt with us according to our sins; nor retributed to us according to our iniquities. ¹¹ For high as the heaven is from the earth; the Lord hath enlarged his mercy for them who fear him. ¹² Far as the east is distant from the west, he hath removed from us our transgressions. ¹³ As a father pitieth his children; the Lord hath pitied them who fear him, ¹⁴ because he knew our formation. O remember that we are dust. ¹⁵ As for man, his days are like grass; like a flower of the field, so he may bloom. ¹⁶ Because a blast of wind passed over it, it is gone. It shall no more know its place. ¹⁷ But the mercy of the Lord is from age to age over them who fear him: and his saving goodness over children's children, ¹⁸ for them who keep his covenant, and remember his commands to do them.

⁷ Our fathers minded not thy wonders in Egypt, they did not remember the multitude of thy mercies. Though in coming up they were refractory at the Red sea,

¹³ they soon forgot his works, they waited not for his counsel.

²⁴ When they despised the pleasant land and did not confide in his word: ²⁵ but murmured in their tents; and hearkened not to the voice of the Lord:

⁴³ many a time did he deliver them. But they provoked him with their counsel. When they were humbled for their iniquities; ⁴⁴ the Lord beheld when they were afflicted. When he heard their supplication, ⁴⁵ he remembered his covenant and according to the multitude of his mercies; ⁴⁶ he relented and excited compassion for them among all those who had captivated them.

⁴ Because there is forgiveness with thee, for thy name's sake,

⁸ The Lord is gracious and merciful: long suffering and abundant in kindness. ⁹ The Lord is kind to them who wait, and his mercies are over all his works.

²⁴ seeing I have called and you have not answered: and though I continued my speech, you did not attend:

⁷ let the wicked man forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man his counsels, and turn to the Lord and he shall find mercy; for he will abundantly pardon your sins. ⁸ For my counsels are not as your counsels: nor are my ways as your ways, saith the Lord. ⁹ But distant as the heaven is from the earth, so is my way distant from your ways; and your thoughts from my understanding.

¹³ Rend your hearts and not your garments, and turn to the Lord your God; for he is gracious and merciful, long suffering and full of compassion, and relenteth at evils.

¹⁸ Who is a God like unto thee, taking away iniquities, and passing by the transgressions of the remnant of his heritage? He hath not kept his anger in remembrance; because he delighteth in mercy; ¹⁹ he will turn and have compassion on us: he will bury deep our iniquities: they shall be whelmed in the depths of the sea.

⁹ Have you yet no reflection? Or do ye not remember the five loaves among the five thousand, and how many panniers you carried off; ¹⁰ nor the seven loaves among the four thousand, and how many baskets you carried off? ¹¹ How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you of bread, when I cautioned you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees?

³⁹ to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but rejected him, when with their hearts they turned towards Egypt,

¹⁵ For to Moses he saith, "I will have mercy on whomsoever I please to have mercy'? and I will have compassion on whomsoever I please to compassionate.

⁶ for the praise of the glory of that favour of his with which he made us objects of favour in the Beloved; ⁷ by whom we have this redemption by his blood; the forgiveness of our sins according to the richness of his grace

²⁵ See that you do not reject him who speaketh. For if they did not escape who rejected him who gave forth oracles on earth, how much less shall we who reject him who is from heaven,

¹² For this purpose I will not neglect to put you always in mind of these things, though you already know them, and are established in the present truth. ¹³ Indeed I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by admonition; ¹⁴ as I know that I must soon lay aside this tabernacle of mine, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath plainly shewed me; ¹⁵ and I will use all diligence that you may be able, every one of you, to recollect these things after my departure.
