¹⁴ and brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death; and burst their chains asunder.

⁵ but let darkness and the shadow of death cover it: upon it let there come a thick darkness. May the day be execrated!

²¹ before I go, whence I shall not return; ²² to a land dark and gloomy; to a land of everlasting darkness; where there is no light; no seeing the life of mortals.

²² Let him not hope to return out of darkness; for he is already doomed to the edge of the sword;

³⁰ Let him never cast a shadow on the ground, nor escape out of darkness.

⁸ I am fenced about and cannot get out. Before me he hath placed darkness.

³⁰ He hath indeed delivered my soul from death; that in light my life may praise him.

⁸ When they shall be bound with fetters or held with cords of affliction,

¹⁰ And the Lord increased Job. upon his making supplication for his friends, the Lord forgave them their sins, and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before. ¹¹ When all his brethren and his sisters heard what had befallen him, they came to him, together with all those who were formerly acquainted with him, and having eaten and drank at his house, they comforted him, and expressed their amazement at all that the Lord had brought upon him. And every one presented him a lamb, and a quarter of a drachm of gold bullion. ¹² And the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than the former; so that his stock was fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, a thousand breeding asses.

⁶ God settleth the lonely in a family, having brought out with strength them who had been bound; in like manner them who were rebellious; them, whose habitation is now in tombs.

²⁰ to hear the groaning of the prisoners; to set free the sons of them who were slain;

¹⁹ until his word came to pass; till the oracle of the Lord tried him. ²⁰ The king had sent and loosed him; the chief of peoples had set him at liberty;

¹⁰ As for them who sat in darkness and the shadow of death; bound with affliction and irons;

¹⁶ Lord I am thy servant; I am thy servant and the son of thy handmaid. Thou hast burst my bonds asunder:

⁷ who keepeth truth forever, executing judgment for the aggrieved, giving food to the hungry.

¹⁶ and lead the blind in a way which they know not, and cause them to walk in paths which they have not known. For them I will make the darkness light, and the crooked ways a straight road. These things 1 will do, and I will not forsake them:

⁹ saying to them who are in bonds, Go forth; and to them who are in darkness, "Come into light." In all the highways they shall be fed, and there shall be pasture for them in all the paths.

¹ Be enlightened: be enlightened, Jerusalem! for thy light is come; and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. ² Behold darkness will cover the earth and thick darkness the nations: but upon thee the Lord will shine and his glory over thee will be conspicuous. ³ And kings will walk by thy light: and nations by thy splendour.

¹ [M] THE SPIRIT of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor, to heal them who are brokenhearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives, and a recovery of sight to the blind:

³¹ And it came to pass in the thirty seventh year of the captivity of Jechonias king of Juda, in the twelfth month, on the twenty fourth of the month, Oulaimadachar king of Babylon, in the first year of his reign, took and raised up the head of Jechonias king of Juda, and caused him to be shaven and released him from the prison, in which he was confined, ³² and spoke kindly to him and set his seat above the kings, who were with him in Babylon. ³³ And changed his prison dress, and caused him to eat in his presence, all the days of his life. ³⁴ And he had a portion continually given to him, day by day, from the king of Babylon, to the day of his death.

¹¹ As for thee, thou by the blood of thy covenant hast sent forth thy prisoners out of a pit which hath no water. ¹² You the prisoners of the congregation shall be placed in strong holds, and for thy one day's sojourning I will make thee twofold compensation.

¹⁶ And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo! these eighteen years, to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

¹⁹ But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison; and having brought them out said,

²⁵ there came one who told them, saying, Behold! the men whom you put in prison, are standing in the temple and teaching the people.

⁷ behold an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared, and a light shone in the prison. And touching Peter's side he roused him up, saying, Arise quickly. Upon which his chains dropped from his hands. ⁸ Then the angel said to him, Gird thyself and put on thy sandals; and when he had done so, then he saith to him, Throw thy mantle around thee and follow me. ⁹ So going out, he followed him, but did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision. ¹⁰ And having passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city, which opened to them of its own accord. So, going out, they proceeded on through one street, and suddenly the angel left him.

²⁶ And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, and all the doors were instantly opened, ²⁷ and the fetters of all dropped off. Upon which the jailor awaking, and seeing the doors of the prison open, drew his sword and was just going to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped. ²⁸ But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm, for we are all here. ²⁹ Thereupon, calling for lights, he ran in, and being in a tremour, prostrated himself before Paul and Silas, ³⁰ and having brought them out, said, O sirs, What must I do to be saved? ³¹ And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy household. ³² Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him, and to all that were in his house. ³³ And he taking them that very hour of the night, washed their stripes; and he and all his family were immediately baptized. ³⁴ Then conducting them up to his house, he spread a table and rejoiced with all his family for having believed in God. ³⁵ And in the course of the day the generals sent the lictors, saying, Dismiss those men, ³⁶ When the jailor made this report to Paul, The generals have sent that you may be discharged; now, therefore, depart and go in peace; ³⁷ Paul said to them, Having scourged us publicly without a trial, men who are Roman citizens, they have cast us into prison, and now discharge us privately! ³⁸ No. Let them come themselves and take us out. When the lictors reported these words to the generals, they were terrified, hearing that they are Romans. So ³⁹ they came and comforted them, and having taken them out, intreated them to leave the city. ⁴⁰ Now when they came out of prison, they went to Lydia's where seeing the brethren, they comforted them and departed;

⁸ For you were formerly darkness, but being now a light in the Lord, walk as children of light

⁹ but you being a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people peculiarly set apart that you may publish the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light
