² And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. For he was afraid to say, She is my wife, lest the men of the city should kill him on her account.

¹³ therefore he changed his countenance before him, and personated a character on that day, and beat as on a tympanum on the city gates, and scrabbled with his hands, and fell against the doors of the gate, and let his spittle run down on his beard. ¹⁴ Thereupon Angchus said to his servants, Behold, you see the man is epileptic! Why have you brought him to me? ¹⁵ Am I in want of epileptics, that you should bring him to be taken with a fit before me? He shall not enter my house.

⁶ upon thee I have leaned from the womb: from my birth thou art my protector; thou art the constant subject of my song.

⁸ Let my mouth be filled with praise, that I may celebrate thy glory; thy majesty, all the day long.

¹⁴ But as for me, I will hope continually; and I will yet praise thee more and more. ¹⁵ My mouth shall proclaim thy saving mercy; thy salvation all the day long. Because I am unpractised in studies

¹ A Psalm of praise. By David, I will extol thee, my God, my king: and bless thy name for ever and ever. ² Day by day I will bless thee, and praise thy name for ever and ever.

²⁵ They who fear and reverence men have been supplanted: but he whose trust is in the Lord shall be gladdened. Impiety causeth a man to fall: but he who trusteth in the Lord shall be safe.

¹⁵ for this cause the glory of the Lord will be in the isles of the sea. In the isles of the sea the name of the Lord will be glorious. ¹⁶ [c] "Lord the God of Israel! from the outskirts of the earth we have heard of thy wonders: there is hope for the righteous." [p] Let them say also, "Woe to the rebels who reject the law!"

⁴¹ Thereupon they went from the presence of the Sanhedrim, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

²⁵ And about midnight Paul and Silas, having prayed, sung a hymn to God; and the prisoners heard them.

²⁰ and give thanks on all occasions for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to the God and Father.

¹⁷ Indeed whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the God and Father by him.

³ We ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as it is fit; because your faith increaseth exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all towards one another aboundeth:

I said, Against myself I will confess mine iniquity to the Lord, thereupon thou didst forgive the wickedness of my heart. ⁶ For this every pious man should pray to thee in due time. Moreover in a flood of many waters, are they not to draw near to him?

⁸ In God let us boast, all the day long: and to thy name give thanks forever.

³ Sing praises to his holy name. Let the heart of them, who seek the Lord, be glad.

⁷⁴ They who fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have trusted in thy words.

⁷ Bring my soul out of prison, that I may adore thy name, Lord. Let the righteous wait for me, till thou shalt reward me.

²⁵ On account of the Lord they shall be acquitted; and in God all the seed of Israel will glory.

²⁴ but let him who boasteth, boast of this only, that he understandeth and knoweth, that I am the Lord, who exercise mercy and judgment and justice on the earth: that in these things is my delight, saith the Lord.

³¹ so that as it is written, Let him who boasteth boast in the Lord."

¹⁵ This is a faithful word and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am a chief; ¹⁶ but I obtained mercy for this purpose, that Jesus Christ might display the utmost forbearance in me, a chief, for an example to them who should afterwards trust in him for everlasting life.

²⁰ Then David said to all the congregation, Bless ye the Lord our God. And all the congregation blessed the Lord the God of their fathers, and with bended knees made a reverence to the Lord and to the king.

³⁰ Ezekias the king, and the chiefs, ordered the Levites to praise the Lord, in the words of David, and of Asaph the prophet. And when they had sung praises with gladness, they fell on their faces and worshipped.

¹ By David. Rejoice ye righteous in the Lord: praise becometh the upright. ² Praise the Lord with the kithara; with the ten stringed psaltery sing praises to him.

²⁷ Let them who desire my justification, exult with joy and be gladdened. Let them who wish the peace of thy servant, say continually, The Lord be magnified.

¹⁶ Let all who seek thee, Lord, rejoice and be glad for thee; let them who love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified!

⁸ Bless our God, ye nations; and cause the sound of his praise to be heard.

³⁰ I will praise the name of my God with an Ode: I will magnify him with thanksgiving;

² and he went out to meet Asa and all Juda and Benjamin, and said, Hear me Asa, and all Juda and Benjamin. The Lord is with you, while you are with him. And if you seek him, he will be found by you. But if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

⁶ In my distress I called on the Lord, and to my God I raised my cry. From his holy temple he heard my voice; and my cry before him reached his ears.

²⁴ for he hath not slighted, nor abhorred the prayer of the distressed; nor turned away his face from me: but hearkened to me when I cried to him.

²² As for me, on my surprisal I said, I am cast far from thy presence; therefore thou, Lord, didst hear the voice of my supplication when I cried to thee.

² Therefore we will not be dismayed, though the earth be shaken, and mountains be hurled to the midst of seas.

³ let them be confounded. But let me trust in thee:

²² Turn to me and ye shall be saved, ye from the farthest part of the earth, I am God and there is none else.

⁵ Then thou wilt look and be filled with awe and astonished at heart; because the riches of the sea and of nations and peoples will pour in upon thee.

¹⁶ the Angel who delivered me from all evils, bless these children! And let them be called by my name and by the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaak; and may they be increased to a great multitude on the earth!

¹ And David addressed the Lord in the words of this ode: on the day the Lord delivered him out of the hands of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul,

⁴ With my voice I cried to the Lord, and from his holy mount he heard me.

¹⁷ The Lord hath hearkened to the desire of the oppressed: Thine ear hath attended to the preparation of their heart;

¹⁴ And I said to him, "Sir, thou knowest" Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of great affliction and have washed their robes and made them white by the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ For this cause they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple. And he who sitteth on the throne will spread his tent over them. ¹⁶ They shall no more hunger, nor shall they thirst any more; nor shall the sun dart upon them; nor any scorching heat: ¹⁷ for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will tend them and guide them to living fountains of water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

¹ and Jacob proceeded on his journey. And raising his eyes he saw a camp of God pitched and messengers of God were coming to meet him. ² And when Jacob saw them he said, That is a camp of God, So he called the name of that place Camps.

¹⁷ Then Elisha prayed and said, Lord I beseech thee, open his eyes that he may see. Accordingly the Lord opened his eyes and he looked and lo! the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.

⁸ And I will station for my house a guard not to be passed nor repassed. And the plunderer shall no more come against them; for now I have seen with mine own eyes.

¹⁰ Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones; for I say to you, Their angels in heaven do continually behold the face of my father who is in heaven.

²² At length this poor man died, and was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom. And the rich man died also, and was buried.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth on service on the account of them who are to be heirs of salvation?

¹² Keep fast hold of instruction; the Lord may be angry and you may perish out of the right way. When his anger suddenly blazeth forth, happy are all they who have trusted in him.

⁷ As thou, Lord, hast multiplied thy mercy: let the sons of men therefore trust in the shelter of thy wings.

¹⁰ Extend thy mercy to them that know thee, and thy goodness to them who are upright in heart.

⁵ Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: that my joyful lips may praise thy name.

¹² O Lord of hosts! happy is the man whose trust is in thee.

¹⁰³ How sweet are thine oracles to my taste! They are sweeter than honey to my mouth.

³ As the citron tree among the trees of the forests; so is my dear brother among the youths. In its shade I took great delight and sat, and its fruit was sweet to my taste.

¹ I have come to my garden, my sister spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spices: I have eaten my bread with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk. Eat, friends; drink; yes drink plentifully brethren.

¹⁷ Because if there be any thing good it is his, if any thing comely it is his; with regard to corn for the youths, and flavourous wine for virgins,

⁴ for with regard to them who have been once enlightened, and have tasted this free, this heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of a holy spirit, ⁵ and tasted the good word of God, and the miraculous powers of the age about to come,

² like newborn babes desire the pure milk of the word that by it you may thrive. ³ Since you have tasted that the Lord is gracious,

¹ What was from the beginning; what we have heard; what we have seen with our eyes; what we have viewed attentively, and our hands have handled [with respect also to the word of the life ² even the life was manifested, and we have seen, and testify, and announce to you, that eternal life which was with the Father, and hath been clearly manifested to us] ³ that which we have seen and heard, we announce to you, that you also may have communion with us. Now this communion of ours is with the Father, and with his son Jesus Christ.

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and every one who loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. ⁸ He who doth not love hath not known God, for God is love. ⁹ By this the love of God was manifested among us, because God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we may live by him. ¹⁰ In this is the love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be an atonement for our sins.

¹² And he said, Lay not thy hand on the lad, nor do any thing to him; for now I know that thou fearest God and on my account hast not spared thy darling son.

²³ Praise him, ye who fear the Lord praise him, all ye seed of Jacob. Let all the seed of Israel fear him;

¹ A Psalm by David. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall want nothing.

²³ Love the Lord, all ye his saints, for the Lord searcheth out truth, and retributeth largely to the insolent.

⁷ God is glorified in the counsel of the holy; great and awful among all around him.

¹³ hallow the Lord himself, and let him be thy fear: ¹⁴ for if thou hast put trust in him he will be to thee a sanctuary, and you shall not run against a stumbling stone, nor as under a falling rock. But as for the houses of Jacob, they are in a trap, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem are in a pit:

⁵ and afterwards the children of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and will be amazed at the Lord and at his goodness in the last days.

³⁰ For about all these things the nations of the world are inquisitive: but your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things. ³¹ But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things will be superadded to you. ³² Fear not, little flock. Because it hath pleased your Father to give you that kingdom,

³² He who spared not his own son but delivered him up for us all, how will he not also with him freely grant us all things?

²² whether Paul. or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come, all are yours, ²³ and you are Christ's and Christ is God's.

¹⁹ And my God will supply all your wants, according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

³ and they sing the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord, God, Almighty; Just and true are thy ways O thou king of the saints; ⁴ Who would not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? For thou alone art perfect. For all the nations will come and worship before thee, For thy rules of rectitude are made manifest.

¹⁰ The strength of a lion and the roaring of a lioness and the boastful pride of dragons have been extinguished. ¹¹ The myrmekoleon hath perished for want of food: and young lions have forsaken each other.

¹¹ Because the Lord loveth mercy and truth; God will give grace and glory: the Lord will not withhold good things from them who walk in innocence.

²¹ Lions roaring for prey, seeking their food from God.

³² For about all such things the nations are solicitous: for your heavenly father knoweth that you have need of all these things.

⁵¹ With his arm he hath displayed strength. He hath scattered them who were elated with the imagination of their heart. ⁵² From thrones he hath hurled potentates, and exalted them of low degree. ⁵³ He hath filled the hungry with good things; and sent away the rich empty.

⁸ Let me instruct thee and teach thee the way thou shouldst go. I will fix steadily mine eyes upon thee.

¹⁶ Come, hearken, all ye who fear God, and I will tell you what he hath done for my soul.

¹⁰ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and all who practise it have good understanding. Let the praise of him endure forever.

⁷ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. And all who practise this have good understanding. And piety towards God is the beginning of discernment: but the wicked despise wisdom and instruction.

²⁴ Now therefore ray son hearken to me; and attend to the words of my mouth.

⁹ rejoice then, young man, in thy youth, and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart spotless and not by the sight of thine eyes, and know that for all these things God will bring thee to judgment.

⁹ [f] "To whom, [say they] have we announced evils? And to whom have we announced a message; we who have been weaned from milk, we who have been withdrawn from the breasts?

² Whereupon Jesus, having called to him a little child, placed it in the midst of them ³ and said, Verily I say to you, Unless you be changed, and be like children you shall never enter the kingdom of the heavens. ⁴ Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is of higher dignity in the kingdom of the heavens.

¹⁴ But Jesus, observing this, expressed displeasure, and said to them, Suffer the children to come to me, and do not hinder the; for of such is the kingdom of God. ¹⁵ Verily I say to you, Whosoever will not, like a child, receive the kingdom of God, he shall in no wise enter it. ¹⁶ Then, having taken them in his arms, he laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

³³ Children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, whither I am going yon cannot come, so I now say to you.

¹⁵ and that, from thy childhood, thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise for salvation by trusting in Christ Jesus.

² that you may fear the Lord your God. You shall keep all his statutes, and his commandments, which I this day command you, both thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, all the days of thy life, that you may live many days.

²⁰ by loving the Lord thy God, and hearkening to his voice, and cleaving to him. For this is thy life, and the lengthening of thy days, to dwell in the land which the Lord solemnly promised thy fathers, Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob, that he would give them.

⁷ Remember therefore that my life is but a breath; and that mine eyes shall never return again to see good.

⁶ Many say, Who will shew us good things? On us, Lord, is marked the light of thy countenance:

⁴ He asked of thee life; and thou hast given him length of days forever.

¹⁶ With length of days I will satisfy him; and I will shew him my salvation.

³ Now I had examined whether my mind could lead my flesh to wine; and my mind had led it with wisdom, retaining a command over pleasure, until I should see of what sort that good is, which the sons of men are to pursue under the sun, all the days of their life.

¹³ [I mean in regard to every man who eateth and drinketh, and can see good in all his labour] if there is not a gift of God that he may be made glad and do good in his life.

¹³ As a conclusion of the discourse, hear thou the whole sum and substance: Fear God and keep his commandments: for this conclusion every man should draw,

¹⁰ For "whoever desireth life; and loveth to see good days; Let him keep his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking guile; ¹¹ Let him depart from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. ¹² Because the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And his ears are open to their prayers: But the face of the Lord is against them who do evil."

¹¹ and trouble be in the midst of it, and injustice? Usury and, fraud have not departed from its streets.

⁷ When the wicked is overthrown, he vanisheth: but the houses of the righteous shall remain.

¹⁹ True lips establish testimony: but a hasty witness hath an unrighteous tongue.

²² Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord: but he who dealeth faithfully is acceptable to him.

³ He who guardeth his mouth preserveth his life; but he who is rash with his mouth, shall bring on himself terror.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they who have the command of it shall eat the fruits thereof.

⁹ Let not a false witness go unpunished; and let him who kindleth mischief perish by it.

²³ He who guardeth his mouth and tongue keepeth his soul from trouble.

⁸ and said "Is not this my people? Children should not rebel." And he became their Saviour from all their distress.

³⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produceth good things; and the bad man, out of his bad treasure produceth bad things. ³⁶ Now I assure you in respect to every idle word which men shall utter, they shall give an account thereof in a day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shall be condemned.

⁹ Lie not one to another. Having put off the old man, with his deeds,

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

²⁶ If any one among you thinketh to be religious without bridling his tongue, he is but deceiving his heart. Such a one's religion is vain.

² for in many instances we all offend. If any one offend not in discourse he is a perfect man, and able to bridle in the whole body.

⁵ So also the tongue is a very small member, yet it boasteth great things. See what a great pile of wood a little fire kindleth to a flame! ⁶ Now, the tongue is a fire, the leader of iniquity; the tongue is set among the members, staining the whole body, and setting the wheel of nature in a blaze, when it is itself set in a blaze by hell. ⁷ For all kinds of beasts, and birds, and reptiles, and fishes, are subdued and have been subdued by man; ⁸ But the tongue of man none can subdue. It is an ungovernable monster: it is full of deadly poison. ⁹ With it we bless our God and father; and with it we curse men, who are made after the image of God. ¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so.

¹ Therefore laying aside all malice, and all deceit, and every kind of hypocrisy, envy and slander,

²² "Who committed no sin, nor was guile found in his mouth";

⁴ These are they who were not defiled with women, for they are pure as virgins. These are they who follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men; first fruits for God and the Lamb. ⁵ And in their mouth there was no guile, for they were without blemish before the throne of God.

²⁸ he said to man, "Behold the worshipping of God is wisdom: and to abstain from evil is understanding."

²⁷ Depart from evil and do good and dwell for evermore.

⁷ I was for peace; but when I spoke they attacked me without provocation.

⁷ Be not wise in thine own conceit; but fear God and depart from all evil:

¹³ The fear of the Lord hateth injustice and insolence and haughtiness and the ways of the wicked: and I have hated the crooked ways of bad men.

¹⁴ The law of the wise is a fountain of life; but the fool shall die by a snare.

¹⁶ The productions of wisdom are better than gold: and the productions of prudence are better than silver. ¹⁷ The paths of life turn aside from evils: and the ways of righteousness are length of life. He who receiveth instruction shall enjoy good: and he who regardeth reproofs shall be wise. He who watcheth his own ways preserveth his soul: and he who loveth his life will be sparing of his mouth.

¹⁶ Wash and become clean: remove iniquities from your souls; in my presence, cease from your evil deeds; ¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment; deliver him who is injured; administer justice to the orphan, and plead the cause of the widow:

⁹ Happy the peace makers; for they shall be called children of God.

³⁸ how God anointed him with a holy spirit and power. Him who went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed by the devil; for God was with him,

⁹ Let love be unfeigned: abhor what is evil; adhere closely to what is good;

¹⁸ If possible, that is, as far as in your power, be at peace with all men.

¹⁷ For the reign of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in a holy spirit.

¹⁹ Let us then pursue those things which tend to peace and mutual edification.

¹¹ Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfectly in order. Be comforted. Have your minds bent on one and the same thing: Be at peace: and the God of love and peace be with you.

¹⁰ As we therefore have an opportunity let us do good to all, but more especially to them who are of the household of faith.

¹¹ and to make it your ambition to live quietly, and to mind your own business, and work with your own hands, as we charged you;

¹⁹ Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth firm, having this inscription""The Lord knoweth them who are his;" and "Let every one who nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

¹⁴ Follow peace with all men, and that holiness without which none shall see the Lord,

¹⁶ and forget not beneficence and contribution: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

¹⁷ Now the wisdom which cometh from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. ¹⁸ And the fruit of this righteousness is peaceably sown by them who cultivate peace.

¹¹ Let him depart from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.

¹¹ Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who doth good is of God. But he who doth evil, hath not seen God.

⁴⁰ And now, Lord, let thine eyes, I beseech thee, be open and thine ears attentive to the prayer made in this place.

⁷ He will not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but will seat them at last with kings on a throne and they shall be exalted.

¹⁸ Behold the eyes of the Lord are on them who fear him; on them who confide in his mercy;

⁶ This afflicted man cried; and the Lord heard him; and saved him out of all his afflictions.

¹⁷ and delivered them out of all their afflictions.

² Lord, hearken to my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the sound of my prayer.

¹⁴ When Ezekias received the letter from the messengers and had read it, he went up to the house of the Lord; and having spread it before the Lord, ¹⁵ Ezekias prayed to the Lord, saying, ¹⁶ "O Lord of Hosts the God of Israel, who art enthroned on the cherubim! Thou alone art the God of every kingdom of the World. Thou hast made the heaven and the earth. ¹⁷ Incline, Lord, thine ear! Lord, hearken! Open, O Lord, thine eyes! Lord, look down and behold the words of Sennacherim which he hath sent to reproach the Living God. ¹⁸ In truth, Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have laid waste this whole inhabited land and the country of those [here mentioned] ¹⁹ and have cast their idols into the fire; for they were not gods; but works of mens" hands, stocks and stones; ²⁰ therefore they destroyed them. But now, Lord, our God, save us out of their hands that every kingdom of the earth may know, that thou alone art God." ²¹ Thereupon Esaias son of Amos was sent to Ezekias and said to him, Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel, " I have heard the prayer which thou hast made to me concerning Sennacherim king of the Assyrians.

¹⁷ But now, Lord our God, hearken to the prayer of thy servant and to his supplications; and let thy face shine upon thy sanctuary which is desolate. For thine own sake, Lord, ¹⁸ incline, my God, thine ear and hear. Open thine eyes and behold our desolation and that of thy city which is called by thy name. For we do not for our own righteousness present our piteous case before thee; but we cast ourselves upon thy tender mercies, Lord, which are many. ¹⁹ O Lord hear! O Lord, be appeased! Attend, Lord! Defer not, my God, for thine own sake! for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. ²⁰ Now whilst I was still speaking and praying and confessing mine own sins and the sins of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the mount of the sanctuary; ²¹ even whilst I was uttering this prayer, behold a man, Gabriel, whom I saw in the former vision, came flying and touched me about the hour of the evening sacrifice ²² and instructed me and conversed with me and said, Daniel, I am now come to teach thee knowledge. ²³ At the beginning of thy supplication a word went forth, and I am come to tell thee; for thou art a man greatly beloved. Be instructed therefore by the decree, and understand by the vision.

¹² Because the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And his ears are open to their prayers: But the face of the Lord is against them who do evil."

¹⁰ And be the man who he may of the children of Israel, or of the proselytes who dwell among you, who shall eat any blood, I will set my face against that person who eateth blood, and destroy him from among his people.

¹⁷ and I will set my face against you; and you shall fall before your enemies; and they who hate you shall pursue you; and you shall flee when there is none pursuing you.

¹⁷ May the memorial of him be destroyed from the earth.

¹⁶ Let the Lord reign for ever and ever! Perish ye nations out of his land!

⁷ The just are remembered with praises; but the name of the wicked is extinguished.

¹⁰ And I then saw wicked men carried to their graves, even out of this holy place; and when they were gone, they were praised in the city, because they had done as they did. Surely this is vanity.

¹³ Thou, O Lord art the hope of Israel. Let all who forsake Thee be ashamed; let them who have apostatised be enrolled in the dust, because they have forsaken the Lord the fountain of lie.

¹¹ therefore thus said the Lord,

⁷ For be the man who he may of the house of Israel, or of the proselytes who have sojourned with Israel, who shall separate himself from me, and give his desires the rule over his understanding when he hath set before his eyes the punishment of his iniquity and shall come to the prophet that he may inquire of me; I the Lord will answer him by that with which he is entangled; ⁸ and I will set my face against that man, and give him up to desolation and destruction; and remove him from among my people; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

⁴ And if they go into captivity before their enemies, I will there command the sword and it shall slay them. I will indeed keep mine eyes fixed on them for evils and not for good:

²⁰ But when Ezekias the king, and Esaias son of Amos the prophet addressed a prayer concerning these things, and cried to heaven, ²¹ the Lord sent an angel who destroyed every mighty man, and warrior, including chief and general, in the camp of the king of Assur. So he returned with shame to his own land, and went to the house of his god, and some of them who sprang from his loins slew him with the sword.

²⁴ In those days Ezekias was sick unto death, and he prayed to the Lord, who hearkened to him and gave him a sign.

¹⁵ The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous: and his ears are open to their prayer.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but out of them all the Lord will deliver them.

¹⁵ He will call on me, and I will answer him: I am with him in affliction: I will deliver him and honour him.

¹⁸ The Lord is near to all who invoke him; to all that call upon him with truth. ¹⁹ He will fulfil the desire of them who fear him: he will hear their prayer and save them. ²⁰ The Lord keepeth all them who love him; but all the wicked he will utterly destroy.

²⁴ therefore it shall come to pass, that before they call I will answer them: and while they are yet speaking I will say, "What is the matter."

⁵ So Peter was kept in prison; and there was earnest prayer to God made for him by the congregation. ⁶ And when Herod was about to bring him forth, on that very night, as Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, being bound with two chains; and the guards before the door were keeping watch, ⁷ behold an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared, and a light shone in the prison. And touching Peter's side he roused him up, saying, Arise quickly. Upon which his chains dropped from his hands. ⁸ Then the angel said to him, Gird thyself and put on thy sandals; and when he had done so, then he saith to him, Throw thy mantle around thee and follow me. ⁹ So going out, he followed him, but did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision. ¹⁰ And having passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city, which opened to them of its own accord. So, going out, they proceeded on through one street, and suddenly the angel left him. ¹¹ Then Peter coming to himself, said, Now I know certainly that the Lord hath sent his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the Jews.

¹⁹ because thy heart was softened and thou didst humble thyself on the account of them soon as thou didst hear what I had spoken against this place and the inhabitants thereof; that they should become a desolation and a curse; and didst rend thy clothes and weep before me; for I heard, saith the Lord;

¹⁷ The sacrifice for God is a contrite spirit. A broken and an humble heart, thou, God, wilt not despise.

¹² And the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than the former; so that his stock was fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, a thousand breeding asses.

⁴ I sought the Lord and he heard me; and brought me safe out of all my sojourns.

²⁰ what afflictions many and sore hast thou shewn me! But thou hast returned and quickened me; and brought me up again from the depths of the earth.

¹⁶ For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again; but in calamities the wicked shall be without strength.

³³ These things I have spoken to you, that you may have peace in me. In this world you will have trouble; but take courage: I have overcome the world.

²² establishing and confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith. And because we must enter into the kingdom of God through many afflictions;

⁷ and we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may belong to God and not be from, us; ⁸ we are pressed on every side, but not utterly crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; ⁹ persecuted, but not quite forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; ¹⁰ always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus may be manifested in this body of ours. ¹¹ For we, who are living, are continually delivered up to death on the account of Jesus, that the life of Jesus may be manifested in this frail flesh of ours. ¹² So that death is operative in us, and life in you.

¹⁷ For this momentary and light affliction of ours is working out for us an eternal weight of glory, great beyond expression,

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? [I speak with an excess of folly] I am more so; more abundant in labours; far surpassing in stripes; more frequent in imprisonments, often in deaths. ²⁴ Of the Jews I five times received forty stripes save one. ²⁵ Thrice I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Thrice I have been shipwrecked. In the deep I spent a whole night and day. ²⁶ On journeys I have been frequently in dangers from rivers; in dangers from robbers; in dangers from my country men; in dangers from foreign nations; in dangers in cities; in dangers in a wilderness; in dangers at sea; in dangers among false brethren: ²⁷ In toil and fatigue, in watchings many a time, with hunger and thirst; in fastings many a time, with cold and nakedness.

³ that none of you might be staggered by those afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. ⁴ For when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we should soon be afflicted, as it hath actually come to pass, and you know;

¹¹ my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. ¹² Indeed all who wish to live holy in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

³³ who by faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, ³⁴ quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were strengthened from weakness, became mighty in battle, repelled armies of aliens. ³⁵ Women received their dead children, by a restoration of them to life. As for others, some were tortured, not expecting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection; ³⁶ and others received the trial of mockings, and scourgings, besides bonds and imprisonments. ³⁷ They were stoned; they were sawn asunder; they were tempted; they were slain with the sword; they wandered about in sheep skins, in goats skins, destitute, afflicted, tormented, ³⁸ [of whom the world was not worthy] wandering in deserts, and mountains, and dens, and caves of the earth.

¹⁰ For an example of enduring adversity, and of long suffering, take, my brethren, the prophets who have spoken in the name of the Lord. ¹¹ Behold we call those sufferers happy. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the Lord's termination" that the Lord is full of compassion and tender mercy.

¹² Beloved, be not surprized at the fiery trial among you, which is come upon you to try you, as if some strange thing had befallen you: ¹³ but inasmuch as you partake of the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice; that at the manifestation of his glory you may indeed rejoice with exceeding great joy. 14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ you are happy; because the spirit of the glory, even the spirit of God resteth on you. On their part indeed it is reviled, but on your part it is glorified.

¹⁰ Let all my bones say, Lord, who is like thee, who deliverest the afflicted from the hand of them who are stronger than he; the afflicted and needy from them who spoil him?

¹² with their hands they shall bear thee up; shouldst thou chance to strike thy foot against a stone.

²² My God sent his angel and shut the mouths of the lions and they have not hurt me. For before him rectitude was found in me; and even in thy sight, king, I have committed no offence. ²³ At this the king was exceedingly rejoiced and gave order to take Daniel up out of the den. So he was taken up out of the den and there was no manner of hurt found on him, because he had trusted in his God. ²⁴ Then the king commanded and they brought the men who had accused Daniel, and they and their sons and their wives were cast into the den of the lions. And before they reached the bottom of the den the lions had such mastery over them that they broke all their bones.

³⁶ For these things were done that the scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him shall not be broken."

⁷ Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord thy God will not hold him guiltless who taketh his name in vain.

⁴ So Jonathan spoke to his father in commendation of David, and said to him, Let not the king sin against thy servant David; for he hath not sinned against thee; and his services are very good. ⁵ For he hath put his life in his hands, and smitten the Philistines, and the Lord hath wrought a great deliverance, and all Israel have seen and rejoiced. Why then wilt thou sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without cause?

⁴ whereupon Saul said to his armour bearer, Draw thy sword, and run me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and stab me, and insult me. But his armour bearer would not, for he was struck with horror. Therefore Saul took the sword, and fell on it.

⁸ And the king of Israel said to Josaphat, There is a certain man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, but I hate him; for he never speaketh good of me; but evil; one Michaias, son of Jemblaa. And Josaphat king of Juda said, Let not the king speak so.

³⁷ for the king is dead. And when they came to Samaria they buried the king in Samaria

¹² The sinner may watch the righteous, and gnash his teeth at him; ¹³ but the Lord will laugh him to scorn, for he foreseeth that his day will come. ¹⁴ The sinners drew the sword; they bent their bow, to overthrow the afflicted and needy; to slay the upright in heart. ¹⁵ Let their sword pierce their own heart; and their bows be broken to shivers.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous will speak wisdom, and his tongue will talk of justice. ³¹ The law of his God is in his heart, and his footsteps shall not slide. ³² The sinner watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to kill him; ³³ but the Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor suffer him to condemn him when he is judged. ³⁴ Wait on the Lord and keep his way: and he will exalt thee to inherit the land. When sinners are cut off, thou shalt see it. ³⁵ I have seen the wicked highly exalted, towering aloft like the cedars of Lebanon. ³⁶ Again I passed by, and lo! he was gone. Though I sought him, his place could not be found. ³⁷ Preserve innocence and eye rectitude; for there is a remnant for the man of peace. ³⁸ But transgressors shall be cut off together; the remnants of the wicked shall be rooted out. ³⁹ The safety of the righteous is from the Lord; and he is their protector in time of trouble. ⁴⁰ The Lord will help them and deliver them; he will rescue them from sinners, and save them: because in him they have put their trust.

¹⁵ let those quickly bear their shame who say to me, Ha! ha!

²³ For before him I will hew down his enemies: and them who hate him I will put to flight.

²³ He will make them retribution for their iniquity and their wickedness: the Lord our God will utterly destroy them.

¹¹ Alas for the wicked! according to the works of his hands evils shall befal him. my people!

¹⁴ Now his citizens hated him, and sent an embassy after him, saying, We do not wish this man to reign over us.

²⁷ And as for those enemies of mine who would not have me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence.

⁴¹ And as he drew near he viewed the city and wept over it, ⁴² saying, O that thou hadst known; even thou; even in this very ay of thine, the things which were for thy peace! But now they are hidden from thine eyes. ⁴³ For days will come upon thee, when thine enemies will surround thee with a rampire; and enclose thee; and shut thee up on every side; ⁴⁴ and dash thee to the ground, and thy children within thee; and not leave one stone on another; because thou didst not know the time of this thy visitation.

⁷ The world cannot hate you: but it hateth me, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.

¹⁸ If the world hate you, consider that it hated me before you. ¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. Now because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. ²⁰ Remember the word which I spake to you. The servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept my word, they will also keep yours. ²¹ But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. ²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ He who hateth me, hateth my Father also.

¹⁵ [from those indeed who slew the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and persecuted us, and who please not God, and are in opposition to all men, ¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the nations that they may be saved; thus, filling up the measure of their sins continually: but the wrath is at last coming upon them,]

⁶ since it is just with God to retribute affliction to them who afflict you;

⁹ These shall suffer punishment, an everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty,

⁹ Whereupon David answered Rechab, and Baana his brother, the sons of Remmon, the Berothite, and said to them, As the Lord liveth who hath redeemed my soul from all affliction,

²⁹ the king swore, saying, As the Lord liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all affliction,

⁹ The Lord was a refuge for the distressed, a seasonable helper in adversity. ¹⁰ Let them who know thy name confide in thee; For thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them who seek thee.

⁵ into thy hands I will commit my spirit. Thou, Lord the God of truth hast redeemed me.

²³ My lips shall rejoice, when I play to thee; my soul also which thou hast redeemed.

¹¹ Because the Lord loveth mercy and truth; God will give grace and glory: the Lord will not withhold good things from them who walk in innocence. ¹² O Lord of hosts! happy is the man whose trust is in thee.

⁴ who redeemeth thy life from destruction: who crowneth thee with mercy and kindness;

⁸ And he himself will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

⁵⁸ Thou, O Lord, hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

²⁷ My sheep, as I told you, hearken to my voice and I know them, and they follow me: ²⁸ and I give them everlasting life; and they shall never perish, nor shall any one wrest them out of my hand. ²⁹ My father who gave them to me, is greater than all, and none is able to wrest them out of my father's hand.

³¹ What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? ³² He who spared not his own son but delivered him up for us all, how will he not also with him freely grant us all things? ³³ Who shall lodge an accusation against them whom God hath chosen? God who acquitteth? ³⁴ who is he who shall condemn? Christ who died? Rather indeed who is raised up, who is actually at the right hand of God, and who maketh intercession for us? ³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of the Christ? Shall tribulation or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ [As it is written, "For thy sake we are killed all the day long, And accounted as sheep for slaughter" ³⁷ We indeed in all these things are more than conquerors by means of him who hath loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created being shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁵ who are, during belief, kept safely by the power of God, for a deliverance prepared to be revealed in the last time;

¹⁸ knowing that from that vain course of life, handed down to you from your fathers, you have been redeemed not with perishable things such as silver and gold, ¹⁹ but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot,

⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy art thou to take the book and to open the seals of it, because thou hast been slain and hast purchased us for God with thy blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation;
