¹⁴ They invaded all of Egypt and landed all over the country in great swarms. Never before had there been so many locusts, nor would there ever be that many again.

² Hear this, you elders, And listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this ever happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers? ³ Tell ye of it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to another generation. ⁴ What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten.

¹ Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming —it is indeed near. ² A day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and thick darkness, like the dawn spreads on the mountains, a great and strong army! There has been nothing like it from old, and after it nothing will be again for generations to come. ³ A fire devoureth before them, and behind them a flame blazeth; the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing escapeth them. ⁴ Their form is like the form of horses, and they are running like war-horses. ⁵ As the noise of chariots, on the tops of the mountains they skip, As the noise of a flame of fire devouring stubble, As a mighty people set in array for battle. ⁶ Before them the peoples are in anguish: all faces turn pale. ⁷ They run like mighty men, they climb the wall like warriors. They each march in his line, and they don't swerve off course. ⁸ "They do not crowd each other. They march every one in his path. They burst through the weapons and do not break ranks. ⁹ "They rush to the city. They run on the wall. They climb into the houses. They enter in at the windows like a thief. ¹⁰ Before them the earth quaketh, the heavens tremble; the sun and the moon are become black, and the stars withdraw their shining. ¹¹ The LORD thunders his voice before his army; for his forces are very great; for he is strong who obeys his command; for the day of the LORD is great and very awesome, and who can endure it?

³ And out of the smoke, locusts descended on the earth, and they were given power like that of the scorpions of the earth. ⁴ They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. ⁵ They were not permitted to kill them, but only to torture them for five months, and the torture they inflicted was like the torture of a scorpion when it stings a man. ⁶ In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, but death will escape them. ⁷ The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were victor's crowns that looked like gold, and their faces were like human faces.
