¹⁴ He said to the elders, "Wait here for us, until we come again to you. Look, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever is involved in a dispute can go to them."

¹⁰ So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

¹² When Moses' hands became heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, and so his hands were steady until the sun went down.

²⁵ Moses chose capable men from all Israel and appointed them as heads over the people, as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. ²⁶ And they judged the people at all times; any difficult cause they brought unto Moses, but every small cause they judged themselves.

¹ When the people saw that Moses took a long time to come down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and told him, "Come here and make us a god who will go before us, because, as for this fellow Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don't know what has become of him."

⁸ "Go ahead of me to Gilgal. I will come to sacrifice burnt offerings and make fellowship offerings. Wait seven days until I come to tell you what to do."

⁸ He waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel, but Samuel didn't come to Gilgal, and the people were scattered from him. ⁹ So Saul said, "Bring here to me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings." Then he offered up the burnt offering. ¹⁰ Just as he finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet and greet him. ¹¹ Samuel said, "What have you done?" Saul replied, "When? I saw that the people were scattering from me, that you didn't come at the appointed time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash. ¹² I thought, 'The Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal but I've not sought the favor of the LORD,' so I forced myself to offer the burnt offering." ¹³ Then Samuel said to Saul, "You have behaved foolishly! You have not kept the command of the LORD your God which he commanded you. For then, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
