³¹ And they come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words. But they will not do them. For with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their unjust gain.

²⁸ "the LORD heard the words you spoke to me. He told me: 'I have heard what the people said to you. Everything they said was good. ²⁹ Oh that they had such a heart with them to fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might go well with them and with their children forever.

³⁶ But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue. ³⁷ Their hearts were not loyal to him. They were not faithful to his promise.

¹³ And to whom a word of the LORD hath been, Rule on rule, rule on rule, line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there, So that they go and have stumbled backward, And been broken, and snared, and captured.

¹³ And so the LORD declares, "These people draw near to me with their mouths, and honor me with their lips, but their hearts remain distant from me. Their fear of me consists of commands dictated by men.

¹⁶ This is what the LORD says: "Stand beside the roads and watch. Ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is. Walk in it and find rest for yourselves. But they said, 'We won't walk in it!' ¹⁷ "'I set watchmen over you. I said: 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said: 'We will not listen!'"

³³ "Jeremiah, when these people, the prophet, or a priest ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'You are the burden, and I'll cast you out,'" declares the LORD. ³⁴ "And the prophet, and the priest, and the people who say, 'The burden of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his house. ³⁵ This is what you should say to one another and among yourselves, 'What has the LORD answered?' or 'What has the LORD said?' ³⁶ But you shall not mention the burden of the LORD, for the burden is to each one his word, and so you twist the words of the living God, the LORD Almighty, our God. ³⁷ Thus shall you say to the prophet, What has the LORD answered you? and, What has the LORD spoken? ³⁸ But, since ye keep on saying, The Oracle of the LORD, therefore, Thus saith the LORD, Because ye have said this word, The oracle of the LORD, whereas I had sent unto you saying, Ye shall not say, The oracle of the LORD

¹ When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the LORD their God, with which the LORD their God had sent him to them, even all these words, ² Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the arrogant (egotistical) men said to Jeremiah: "You are telling a lie! the LORD our God has not sent you to say: 'You are not to enter Egypt to reside there." ³ Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to give us over into the hand of the Chaldeans. They will put us to death or exile us to Babylon. ⁴ So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, didn't obey the LORD's voice, to dwell in the land of Judah. ⁵ But Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces took all the rest of Judah who had come back into the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been forced to go; ⁶ the men, and the women, and the children, and the king's daughters, and every person who Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah; ⁷ They did not listen to the LORD. They went to Egypt. They went as far as Tahpanhes.

¹⁶ "We refuse to listen to what you have told us in the name of the LORD.

¹ And then in the sixth year, in the sixth month, on the fifth day of the month, I was sitting in my house, and the elders of Judah were sitting before me. And the hand of the Sovereign LORD fell on me there,

¹ Some of Israel's elders came to me and sat down in front of me.

¹ In the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, some of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and sat before me. ² Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ³ Son of man, speak to the old men of Israel, and say to them, Thus said the Sovereign LORD: Come ye to seek me? I live, if I will be sought for you, says the Sovereign LORD. ⁴ Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man? Make known to them the detestable things of their ancestors. ⁵ And say to them, So says the Sovereign LORD: In the day that I chose Israel, and lifted up My hand to the seed of the house of Jacob, and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt; when I lifted up My hand to them, saying, I am the LORD your God; ⁶ in that day I swore to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands. ⁷ And I said to them, Cast away every man the abominations of his eyes and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. ⁸ But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me. They did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. ⁹ But I worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. ¹⁰ Therefore I brought them out from the land of Egypt, and brought them into the desert. ¹¹ and I gave them my statutes and declared unto them my rights, by which the man that does them shall live by them. ¹² '""I also gave them certain days to worship me as a sign between us so that they would know that I, the LORD, made them holy. ¹³ But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes and they rejected my ordinances, which if a man keeps, he will live in them. And they greatly profaned my Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to consume them. ¹⁴ But I wrought for my name`s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. <sup>15</sup> Yet even l lifted up my hand to them. in the desert,— That I would not b1ing them into the land which I had given to them flowing with milk and honey, The beauty, it was. of all lands: <sup>16</sup> because they rejected my ordinances, and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths, for their heart went after their idols. <sup>17</sup> '""But I had compassion on them. I did not destroy them or completely wipe them out in the desert. <sup>18</sup> I said to their children in the wilderness, 'Don't walk in the statutes of your fathers. Don't observe their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols. <sup>19</sup> I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my rights, and do them; <sup>20</sup> Make my Sabbaths holy. They shall be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.' <sup>21</sup> '""But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes. They were not careful to obey my ordinances. If a man obeys them, he will live. They profaned my Sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness. <sup>22</sup> But I withdrew my hand, and wrought for my name`s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. ²³ Again I lifted up my hand upon them in the wilderness, to disperse them among the nations, and scatter them through the countries: ²⁴ because they had not executed my ordinances, but had rejected my statutes, and had profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols. ²⁵ Therefore I also gave them statutes that were not good and by which they could not live. ²⁶ Yea I let them defile themselves with their gifts, when they caused every firstborn to pass through the fire,-.that I might make them desolate. To the end they might know that, I, am the LORD. ²⁷ Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, So says the Sovereign LORD: Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed Me, in that they have committed a sin against Me. ²⁸ For after I had brought them into the land that I promised to give them, when they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees: they made there offerings, and provoked me with their oblations, making sweet savours there, and poured out their drink offerings. ²⁹ Then I said to them, What is the high place to which ye go? and its name is called Bamah to this day. ³⁰ Therefore say to the house of Israel, So says the Sovereign LORD: Are you defiled in the same way as your fathers? And do you go whoring after their abominations? ³¹ When you offer your gifts, when you make your sons pass through the fire, do you pollute yourselves with all your idols to this day? Should I be inquired of by you, house of Israel? As I live, says the Sovereign LORD, I will not be inquired of by you! ³² And it shall not be as ye say, We will be as the nations, and as the tribes of the earth, to worship stocks and stones.

²⁷ Her rulers in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood and to destroy souls, to get unjust gain.

²⁴ No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

²⁴ "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock. ²⁶ But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. ²⁷ The rain came down, the floods rose, the winds blew and beat upon that house, and down it fell — with a mighty crash."

²² The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

²² When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.

⁴⁸ He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. ⁴⁹ But the man who merely hears them and does not practice them is like a man who built a house upon the ground without a foundation. The torrent burst upon it, and at once it collapsed, and the wreck of that house was complete."

²¹ But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”

³⁹ She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to His message.

²⁸ But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

¹⁵ And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” ¹⁶ Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance. ¹⁷ And he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said: ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my produce and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?' ²¹ This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God.”

¹⁴ The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of this and were scoffing at Jesus.

³³ So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. All of us are here now in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has ordered you to say."

⁵ For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

⁹ But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

²² Obey the message; do not merely listen to it, and deceive yourselves. ²³ For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, ²⁴ and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

¹⁴ What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? ¹⁵ Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. ¹⁶ If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that?

¹⁷ If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him? ¹⁸ Little children, let us not love in word or tongue but in deed and in truth.
