¹ Jacob saw Esau coming with his four hundred men. Therefore he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two concubines. ² He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear. ³ Jacob went ahead of them. He bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother. ⁴ But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell upon his neck and kissed him, and they wept. ⁵ Then Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and the children and said, "Who are these with you?" And he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant." ⁶ And the maidservants and their children drew near and bowed down. ⁷ And Leah also and her children came near, and bowed down; and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed down. ⁸ Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" Jacob said, "To find favor in the sight of my lord." ⁹ And Esau said, I have enough, my brother. Keep what you have yourself. ¹⁰ And Jacob said, "No, please, if I have found favor in your eyes, you must take my gift from my hand, for then I have seen your face which is like seeing the face of God, and you have received me. ¹¹ Please take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he accepted. ¹² Then he said, Let us depart and march on straightway. ¹³ Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die. ¹⁴ Let my lord pass on before his servant and I will move along slowly at the pace of the livestock that are ahead of me, and at the pace of the children until I come to my lord in Seir." ¹⁵ And Esau said, "Let me leave some of my people with you." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord." ¹⁶ So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. ¹⁷ Jacob moved on to Succoth. He built a house there for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is named Succoth. ¹⁸ Jacob traveled safely from Paddan-aram to the city of Shechem in Canaan. He camped within sight of the city. ¹⁹ And for a hundred bits of money he got from the children of Hamor, the builder of Shechem, the field in which he had put up his tents. ²⁰ And there he set up an altar, and called it El-Elohe-Israel.

⁴¹ So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. Esau said to himself: "The days of mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob." ⁴² When Rebekah heard about Esau’s plans to kill Jacob, she called her younger son, Jacob. She said: »Your brother Esau is comforting himself by planning to kill you.

⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob and said, "We came to your brother, to Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him." ⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and camels, into two bands;

¹⁶ And he put them under the hand of his servants, herd by herd, and said to his servants, "Cross on ahead before me, and put some distance between herds.

³⁰ Jacob slept with Rachel too. He loved Rachel more than Leah. So he worked for Laban another seven years.

²² Then God remembered Rachel. God listened to her and opened her womb. ²³ And she conceived and gave birth to a son. And she said, "God has taken away my disgrace." ²⁴ She named him Joseph. She said: "May the LORD give me another son."

³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colours.

¹⁷ "They'll be mine," says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "in the day when I prepare my treasured possession. I'll spare them, just as a man spares his own son who serves him.

² And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men were standing near him. And he saw them and ran from the doorway of the tent to meet them. And he bowed down to the ground.

⁶ Now Joseph was the governor over the land. He was the one who sold food to all the people of the land. And the brothers of Joseph came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

²⁶ And when Joseph came into the house they brought the gift that was in their hand into the house to him, and they bowed down before him to the ground.

⁵ Those who were full must hire themselves out for bread, but those who are hungry will become fat. As for the infertile, she will bear seven, but she who has many sons withers away.

³ Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, since you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor.

⁴ If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your post, for calmness can undo great offenses.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

⁴ When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

¹¹ I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. ¹² The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock.

¹⁵ (just as the Father knows me and I know the Father,) and I lay down my life for the sheep.

²⁸ And he said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel: for in your fight with God and with men you have overcome.

³⁰ Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there.

³⁴ And portions were taken unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

² He cried so loudly that the Egyptians heard him. In fact, Pharaoh's household heard about it.

¹⁴ Then he fell upon the neck of his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin wept upon his neck. ¹⁵ He kissed all his brothers and wept on them. Afterward his brothers talked with him.

²⁹ Joseph got in his chariot and went to Goshen to meet his father. When they met, Joseph threw his arms around his father's neck and cried for a long time.

¹¹ O Lord, please let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight to revere in your name. Please, let your servant be successful this day and give him compassion before this man." I was cupbearer for the king.

¹² And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and everyone tore his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads,

⁴ I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

⁷ When a man's ways please the LORD He makes even his enemies live at peace with him.

¹ The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD as streams of water. He turns it wherever he will.

²⁰ So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.

³⁷ They all wept openly as they embraced Paul and kissed him.

² But Jacob was angry with Rachel, and said, Am I in the place of God, who has kept your body from having fruit?

⁹ He answered: They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said: Bring them to me, that I may bless them.

¹³ So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and he went in to her, and the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she bore a son.

²⁷ I prayed for this boy, and the LORD granted me the request I asked of him.

⁵ And of all my sons, for the LORD has given me many sons, He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD, over Israel.

³ Children are an inheritance from the LORD. They are a blessing from him.

¹⁸ I am here with the children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who lives on Mount Zion.

¹³ And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me."

⁵ And I have oxen and donkeys, flocks and men-servants and maid-servants. And I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.

¹³ And he lodged there that night. Then he took from what he had with him a gift for Esau his brother: ¹⁴ two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, ¹⁵ also thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. ¹⁶ And he put them under the hand of his servants, herd by herd, and said to his servants, "Cross on ahead before me, and put some distance between herds. ¹⁷ He commanded the first servant: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and whose animals are these ahead of you?' ¹⁸ Then you shall say, 'They are your servant, Jacob's. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Look, he also is behind us.'" ¹⁹ He also commanded the second servant, the third, and all the others who followed the herds. He said: »Say the same thing to Esau when you find him. ²⁰ And say moreover, Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.

⁵ And it happened that from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, the LORD blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house and in the field.

¹⁷ And the king loved Esther more than all the women, and she won his favor and loyalty more than all the virgins, so he put a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

⁹ the LORD asked Cain: "Where is your brother Abel?" "I do not know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"

³⁹ And his father Isaac answered and said to him, Behold, your dwelling shall be from the fat of the earth and from the dew of the heavens above;

⁴¹ So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. Esau said to himself: "The days of mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob."

²³ They went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and they asked the LORD, Shall we go up to fight again against the Benjamites, our brothers? the LORD said, Go up against them.

¹⁵ The leach has two daughters: 'Give, give'. There are three things that are never satisfied; four that don't say, 'Enough:'

⁸ There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. For whom then, do I labor, and deprive my soul of enjoyment? This also is vanity, yes, it is a miserable business.

¹⁷ So Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

²⁰ When they heard this, they glorified God. Then they said to Paul, “You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the Law.

⁷ I take great joy and encouragement in your love, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.

¹⁶ no longer as a slave but better than a slave as a dear brother, especially to me, but even more so to you, both as a person and as a believer.

¹⁹ Behold, your servant has found favor in your eyes and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life. But I cannot flee to the mountains, lest the disaster overtake me and I die.

³⁰ And Jacob called the name of the place Penuel, because I saw God face to face, and my life is delivered.

³ Then Judah said to him, "The man solemnly admonished us, saying, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

²⁹ The time drew near that Israel must die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt,

⁴ And when the days of weeping were ended, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, "If I have found favour in your eyes, speak unto Pharaoh and tell him, how that

¹² Moses said to the LORD, "Look, you have told me, 'Bring up this people,' but you haven't let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, 'I know you by name,' and also, 'You have found favor in my sight.' ¹³ Now, if I've found favor in your sight, please show me your ways so I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. And remember, this nation is your people."

¹⁰ Then she bowed down on her face to the earth, and said to him: "Why have I found favor in your eyes? For you give me attention and I am a foreigner."

³ But David took an oath and said, Your father knows well that I have found favour in your eyes, so he says, 'Don't let Jonathan know this, or he will be grieved'; but truly as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.

¹³ He said, "Good. I will make a covenant with you. I am asking only one thing from you: You shall not see my face unless you bring Michal the daughter of Saul when you come to see me."

²⁴ And the king said, Let him go to his house, but let him not see my face. So Absalom went back to his house and did not see the face of the king.

²⁸ Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem; and he didn't see the king's face.

³² Absalom said to Joab, "Look, I have sent to you, saying, 'Come here that I may send you to the king to say, "Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there." ' So then, let me see the face of the king; if there is guilt in me, then let him kill me."

²⁶ "He prays to God and finds favor with him. He sees God's face and shouts for joy! God restores him to his righteous state.

¹¹ By this I know that you are pleased with me, because my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.

² This is what the LORD says: "The people who survived the sword, found favor in the desert while Israel was seeking rest.

¹⁰ See that you do not look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

⁴ They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

⁴³ And the man increased exceedingly, and had large flocks, and maid-servants and men-servants, and camels and donkeys.

⁹ And Esau said, I have enough, my brother. Keep what you have yourself.

¹⁹ She replied, "Give me a blessing, since you have given me the land of the Negev. Give me also some springs of water." So he gave her the upper and lower springs.

¹⁵ And she said to him, "Give me ⌊a gift⌋; you have given me the land of the Negev, and give me also a spring of water." And Caleb gave to her the upper and lower spring.

²⁷ Let this gift which your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord.

²⁶ When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold, a present for you from the plunder of the LORD's enemies.”

¹⁷ And they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, Send. And they sent fifty men. And they looked for three days, but did not find him.

¹⁵ When he returned to the man of God, he and all of his army, he came and stood before him and said, "Please now, I know that there is no God in all of the world except in Israel. So then, please take a gift from your servant." ¹⁶ But he answered: As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And when he pressed him, he still refused.

²³ Naaman said, Please take two talents. He urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing, and laid them on two of his servants; and they carried them before him.

²³ Then the master told the servant, 'Go out into the streets and the lanes and make the people come in, so that my house may be full.

³¹ What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? ³² He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?

²¹ So let no one boast in men; for all things .are yours:

¹⁰ sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

⁵ So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you beforehand and make arrangements for the bountiful gift you had promised. This way, your gift will be prepared generously and not begrudgingly. ⁶ Consider this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

¹¹ I am not saying this because of lack, since I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. ¹² I know what it is to be poor, and I know what it is to be rich: I have gone through many things and experienced many things, both to be full and to be hungry, both to have plenty and to be in want.

¹⁸ I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

⁸ Now physical exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, holding promises for both this present life and the one to come.

⁵ David said: "My son Solomon is young and inexperienced. The house to be built for the LORD should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it. So David made extensive preparations before his death."

¹⁰ A righteous man respects the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

¹¹ He tends his flock like a shepherd. He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart. He gently leads those that have young.

¹⁵ I will feed My sheep, and I will make them lie down, declares the Sovereign LORD. ¹⁶ "I will seek the lost. I will bring back the scattered. I will bind up the broken and strengthen the sick. The fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with judgment."

²³ "'I will place one shepherd over them, my servant David. He will take care of them. He will take care of them and be their shepherd. ²⁴ I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them;" I, the LORD, have spoken it. ²⁵ And I will make a covenant of peace with them, and will send the evil beasts out of the land. And they shall dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods.

¹⁵ When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." ¹⁶ A second time he said, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me? He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus replied, Tend my sheep. ¹⁷ He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he asked him a third time: Do you love me? And he said to him: Lord, you know all things. You know that I love you. Jesus said to him: Feed my sheep.

³ Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the country of Edom.

¹ "We turned and set out for the desert on the road to the Reed Sea just as the LORD had directed me. We traveled around Mount Seir for many days.

⁴ the LORD, when you went down from Seir, when you marched from the region of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens poured down, the clouds poured down water.

¹⁰ And now, behold, the sons of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir (whom you would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them and did not destroy them),

⁸ Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Because Moab and Seir say, Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations;

² "Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, ³ And say to it, So says the Sovereign LORD: Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch My hand against you, and I will make you a ruin and a waste.

³³ With many such parables Jesus spoke the word to them, to the extent that they could understand.

¹ We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

² I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for solid food. In fact, you are still not ready,

¹⁹ Though I am free of obligation to anyone, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. ²⁰ To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the Law I became like one under the Law (though I myself am not under the Law), to win those under the Law. ²¹ To those without the Law I became like one without the Law (though I am not outside the law of God but am under the law of Christ), to win those without the Law. ²² To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men, so that by all possible means I might save some of them.

¹¹ Then Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will do.

²⁵ And they said, "You have saved our lives. If we have found favor in the eyes of my lord, we will be servants to Pharaoh."

¹³ And she said, "May I find favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and have spoken kindly to your servant, and I am not one of your servants."

⁸ Ask your young men and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find grace in your eyes, for we come at a good time. Please give whatever you can to your servants and to your son David'.

⁴ Then the king said to Ziba, “Behold, all that belongs to Mephibosheth is yours.” Ziba said, “I bow down. Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, O king.”

³⁷ The Israelites left Rameses to go to Succoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, plus all the women and children.

²⁰ They left Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the desert.

²⁷ and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan’s bank, to the uttermost part of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.

⁵ He said to the men of Succoth: "Give my troops some bread. They are tired. I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian."

⁸ He went up to Penuel and made the same request of them. The men of Penuel gave the same answer as the men of Succoth.

¹⁴ He captured a young man from Succoth and questioned him. The young man listed for him the commanders of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men.

¹⁶ So he took the elders of the city and disciplined the men of Succoth with thorns and briers from the desert.

⁴⁶ The king cast them in the plain of Jordan, in the thick soil of the ground between Succoth and Zarethan.

⁶ God has spoken from his sanctuary: "I will triumph. I will divide Shechem, and measure out the valley of Succoth.

²⁰ Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram, and sister of Laban the Aramean.

² Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

⁶ Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan Aram, to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a command, saying, "You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan," ⁷ and [that] Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padan-Aram.

⁹ Now when Jacob was on his way from Paddan-aram, God came to him again and, blessing him, said,

¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah that she bore to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, and Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters were thirty-three persons in all.

¹ And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem; he summoned the elders of Israel, their heads, their judges, and their officials, and they presented themselves before God.

¹ Now Abimelech, the son of Jerubbaal, went to Shechem to his mother's family, and said to them and to all the family of his mother's father,

²³ John, also, was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there were many streams there; and people were constantly coming and being baptized.

⁵ So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

¹⁶ Their bones were carried back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a price he paid in silver.

¹⁷ So Ephron's field at Machpelah near Mamre, with the hollow in the rock and all the trees in the field and round it, ¹⁸ to Abraham as a property in the presence of the Hittites, with respect to all who were entering the gate of his city. ¹⁹ And after this Abraham buried his wife Sarah at the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre; it is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. ²⁰ And the field and the cave which was in it passed to Abraham as a burial site from the Hittites.

² And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her. ³ And his soul clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to the girl. ⁴ And Shechem said to Hamor, his father, Get me this girl for my wife. ⁵ Jacob learned that his daughter had been disgraced. Since his sons were out in the fields with his livestock, he did nothing until they came back. ⁶ Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. ⁷ The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter, a thing that ought not to be done. ⁸ And Hamor spoke with them, saying, My son Shechem's soul is bound to your daughter. Please give her to him for a wife. ⁹ Make marriages with us. Give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. ¹⁰ And live with us, and the land is before you; live and trade in it, and get property in it. ¹¹ Then Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will do. ¹² Make the bride price and gift as high as you like; I will give what you say to me. But give me the girl as a wife." ¹³ And the sons of Jacob answer Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and they speak (because he defiled Dinah their sister), ¹⁴ And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for that is a disgrace for us. ¹⁵ Only herein, can we consent to you,—If ye will become like us, by circumcising to you every male, ¹⁶ then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for wives, and dwell among you and be as one race. ¹⁷ But if you will not be circumcised, we will take our daughter and depart. ¹⁸ And their words were pleasing to Hamor and his son Shechem. ¹⁹ The young man did not wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father. ²⁰ so Emmor and his son Sychem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city saying. ²¹ "These people are friendly toward us. So let them live in our land and move about freely in the area. Look, there is plenty of room in this land for them. We can marry their daughters and let them marry ours. ²² »These people will consent to live with us and become one nation on one condition: Every male must be circumcised, as they are. ²³ Will not their livestock and their property and all their animals be ours? Only let us give consent to them so they will live among us." ²⁴ All the citizens of the city agreed with what Hamor and Shechem proposed. Then all the males were circumcised. ²⁵ It happened on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males. ²⁶ And they killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword. And they took Dinah from the house of Shechem, and left. ²⁷ The sons of Jacob came upon the slain.
