⁷ "As a well pours out its water, so Jerusalem pours out her wickedness. Violence and destruction are heard in her. Sickness and wounds are ever before me.

⁹ Confuse them, Lord, and confound their language, for I have seen violence and strife in the city. ¹⁰ Day and night they prowl around on its walls, malice and abuse are also within her. ¹¹ Destructive forces are within her, threats and lies don't depart from her streets.

²³ Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea, which cannot rest, and whose waters cast up mire and dirt.

⁸ Each time I speak, I cry aloud. I proclaim violence and destruction! For me the word of the LORD has resulted in reproach and derision all day long.

¹¹ '"Violence has grown into a weapon for punishing wickedness. None of the people will be left. None of that crowd, none of their wealth, and nothing of value will be left.

²³ '"Prepare chains for the land is full of bloodshed and the city full of violence.

³ You shall say, 'The Sovereign LORD says: “A city that sheds blood within herself, that her time may come, and that makes idols against herself to defile her! ⁴ You have become guilty in your blood that you have shed, and are defiled in your idols which you have made! You have caused your days to draw near, and have come even to your years. Therefore I have made you a reproach to the nations, and a mocking to all the countries. ⁵ Those who are near, and those who are far from you, will mock you, you infamous one, full of tumult. ⁶ Behold, the princes of Israel, each one in you used his power to shed blood. ⁷ In you have they treated father and mother with contempt. Among you they have oppressed the foreigner. In you they have wronged the fatherless and the widow. ⁸ You have despised my holy things, and have profaned my Sabbaths. ⁹ In you are men of slander to shed blood; and in you they eat on the mountains; in your midst they do unchaste acts. ¹⁰ In you they have let the shame of their fathers be seen; in you they have done wrong to a woman at the time when she was unclean. ¹¹ And one has committed abomination with his neighbor's wife; and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in you has violated his sister, his father's daughter. ¹² They take a bribe among you in order to shed blood; and you take usury, and you make gain from your neighbors by extortion, and so you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign LORD.

⁷ ""Her blood is in her midst. She placed it on the bare rock. She did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance.

⁸ But lately my people have risen up as an enemy. You strip the robe and clothing from those who pass by without a care, returning from battle. ⁹ Ye cast out the women of my people from their pleasant houses. Ye take away my glory from their young sons forever. ¹⁰ "Get up and go because this is not your resting-place. Uncleanness brings on destruction, a painful destruction.

¹ I said, "Please listen, you heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: Isn't it for you to know justice? ² you who despise good and love evil, who tear off the skin of my people, along with the flesh from their bones. ³ Who eat the flesh of my people? They strip their skin and they break their bones; and spread them as for the caldron and as flesh within the caldron.

⁹ Hear this, O rulers of the house of Jacob and leaders of the house of Israel, those detesting justice and perverting all that is right, ¹⁰ he who builds Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wickedness. ¹¹ Her leaders judge for bribes, and her priests teach for a price, and her prophets of it tell fortunes for money: yet they lean on the LORD, and say, “Isn’t the LORD among us? No disaster will come on us.” ¹² Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed up like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the temple Mount like a forest high place."

² The pious has perished from the earth, and the upright is not among mankind. All of them lie in wait for blood; each one hunts his brother with a net. ³ Their hands are on that which is evil to do it diligently. The ruler and judge ask for a bribe; and the powerful man dictates the evil desire of his soul. Thus they conspire together.

¹⁰ Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be! ¹¹ Can both fresh water and bitter water flow from the same spring? ¹² My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
