My eye dwells on their provocation. ³ Lay down a surety for me with you; who is he that will give surety for me? ⁴ Indeed, you have closed their mind from understanding; therefore, you will not let them triumph. ⁵ He who denounces his friends for plunder, Even the eyes of his children will fail. ⁶ He has made me also a byword of the peoples; and I am one in whose face they spit. ⁷ My eyes have grown weak from grief; and my whole body is as thin as a shadow. ⁸ Upright men are appalled at this, And the innocent man rouses himself against the polluted, ⁹ »Yet, the righteous person clings to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger. ¹⁰ "But now, you must come and try again! I will not find one wise man among you. ¹¹ My days have passed; my plans are broken off, the desires of my heart. ¹² They have turned night into day, and after darkness I hope for light again. ¹³ If I wait for Sheol as my house, I have spread out my bed in the darkness; ¹⁴ if I have said to corruption, 'You are my father;' to the worm, 'My mother,' and 'My sister,' ¹⁵ "Where is my hope? Can you see any hope left in me? ¹⁶ Will they go down to the bars of Sheol? Or shall we descend together into the dust?"

¹¹ "What strength do I have, that I should wait and hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?

¹³ If I wait for Sheol as my house, I have spread out my bed in the darkness; ¹⁴ if I have said to corruption, 'You are my father;' to the worm, 'My mother,' and 'My sister,'

¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own family.

¹⁶ After this Job lived a hundred and forty years. He saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.

³ For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near the grave. ⁴ I am counted among those who go down into the pit. I am like a man who has no help, ⁵ set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand.

¹⁰ I said in the pause of my days, I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years. ¹¹ I said, I shall not see Jah, the LORD, in the land of the living; I shall look on man no more with the people of the world. ¹² My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me like a shepherd's tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver. He will cut me off from the loom. From day even to night you will make an end of me. ¹³ I leveled my soul until morning. Like a lion, so He shatters all my bones. From day until night You make an end of me. ¹⁴ "I cry like a swallow (swift). I mourn like a dove. My eyes are red from looking to you, the LORD. I am terribly abused. Please come and help me.

¹⁶ For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry, for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls that I have made.

⁶ Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ This went on year after year when she went up to the house of the LORD; she provoked her, therefore she wept and didn't eat.

⁴ "I have become a laughingstock to my friends! I called upon God and he answered. Yet I am a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless!

⁹ "Would it turn out well if he examined you? Could you deceive him as you might deceive men?

²⁰ My scorners are my friends; my eye pours out tears to God.

³ Bear with me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

¹³ His soul shall dwell in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the land.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as he who weeps for his mother. ¹⁵ Yet, when I stumbled, they rejoiced and gathered together. They gathered together against me. Unknown attackers tore me apart without stopping. ¹⁶ Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me.

¹ He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

³⁹ And those who passed by hurled insults at him, wagging their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” ⁴¹ In the same way the Chief Priests, with the Teaches of the Law and Councillors, said in mockery: ⁴² "He saved others," they said, "but he cannot save himself! He the 'king of Israel'! Let him come down now from the cross; then we will believe in him! ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" ⁴⁴ In the same way even the robbers who were crucified with him insulted him.

⁹ "I guarantee that he will come back. You can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and place him here in front of you, you can blame me the rest of my life.

³² For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.'

³³ Neither is there any arbitrator between us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

¹²² Ensure your servant's well-being. Don't let the proud oppress me.

¹¹ and your poverty will come on you like a bandit and your desperation like an armed man.

¹⁵ He who is surety for a stranger shall be ruined; and he who hates suretyship is safe.

¹⁸ A man lacking heart strikes hands; he pledges in the presence of his friend.

¹⁶ Take the garment of anyone who puts up collateral for a stranger; hold it in pledge if he does it for an unfamiliar woman.

²⁶ Be not of them who strike hands, of them who are sureties for debts:

¹⁴ "I cry like a swallow (swift). I mourn like a dove. My eyes are red from looking to you, the LORD. I am terribly abused. Please come and help me.

²² Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.

³¹ Now David was told, "Ahithophel was among the conspirators with Absalom." Then David said, "Please frustrate the counsel of Ahithophel, O LORD."

¹⁴ Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than the advice of Ahithophel." (Now the LORD had ordained to frustrate the good counsel of Ahithophel in order for the LORD to bring misery upon Absalom).

¹⁶ And it happened that while he was speaking to him, he said to him, "Have we appointed you as a counselor to the king? Stop—why should you be killed?" So the prophet stopped and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my advice."

¹⁴ the LORD has poured into them a spirit of dizziness. They make Egypt stagger in all that she does, as a drunkard staggers around in his vomit.

²⁵ At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

¹¹ He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

⁸ as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, down to this very day."

²⁰ Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

⁵ You shall not bow down to them in worship or serve them; because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of the parents, to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me,

⁶⁵ Among those nations you'll have no rest. There'll be no resting place for the soles of your feet. Instead, the LORD will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a despairing spirit.

¹² Nevertheless in your days I will not do it for David your father’s sake: but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

²⁰ "But the eyes of the wicked will fail and they will not escape. Their hope will become a dying gasp."

²¹ "I will not show partiality to any person or use flattery toward anyone. ²² For I know not how to flatter; my Maker would soon take me away.

² Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart. ³ May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts,

¹⁹ A gossip reveals secrets. So avoid a man who speaks flattering words.

⁵ A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

¹⁷ Our eyes still fail, looking in vain for our help. In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

⁵ For, as you know, we never used flattery nor a pretext for greed God is witness

²⁷ Why did you flee secretly, and deceive me, and did not tell me, that I might have sent you away with mirth and with songs, with tambourine and with harp;

⁷ then I will cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and I will cast this house, which I have made holy for my name, out of my sight; and Israel will be a proverb and a byword among all peoples.

⁹ "But now I am their mocking song, and I have become a byword for them.

¹⁴ You made our defeat a proverb among the nations so that people shake their heads at us.

¹² And the harp and the viol, the tambourine and flutes and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor consider the work of his hands.

⁸ "You have shriveled me up. It has become a witness. And my leanness rises up against me. It testifies to my face.

¹⁶ My face is red with weeping. Deep darkness is on my eyelids,

⁷ My eyes grow weak with sorrow. I am weak because of all my foes.

⁹ Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in distress. My eye wastes away with grief, [yea], my soul and my body. ¹⁰ For my life is spent with sorrow, my years with sighing. My strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones waste away.

²³ I fade away like an evening shadow. I am shaken off like a locust.

¹² For who knows what is good for a man in his life during the few days of his fleeting life, which are fleeting as a shadow? For who can tell anyone what will happen in the future under the sun?

¹⁷ Because of this our hearts are feeble; for these things our eyes are dark;

¹⁹ The righteous will see this and rejoice; the innocent will insult him, saying,

³⁰ to keep the godless man from reigning or laying a snare for the people."

¹² Look, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches. ¹³ Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure, and washed my hands in innocence. ¹⁴ For all day long I have been plagued, and punished every morning. ¹⁵ If I had said, "I will speak thus;" look, I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, don't marvel at the matter: for one official is eyed by a higher one; and there are officials over them.

¹³ Your eyes are too pure to see evil, and you are not able to look at wrongdoing. Why do you look at the treacherous? Why are you silent when the wicked swallows up someone more righteous than him?

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. But since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

⁵ Did he not tell me, She is my sister? And did not she say to me, He is my brother? With a pure heart and innocent hands I have done this.

³⁰ He will deliver even him who is not innocent. Yes, he will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.

⁴ He that has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence: so will I go about your altar, O LORD:

¹³ Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure, and washed my hands in innocence.

⁷ They go from strength to strength, until each appears before God in Zion.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.

¹⁸ The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn that grows brighter until the full light of day.

¹⁶ A wise man fears, and shuns evil, but the fool is hotheaded and reckless.

¹⁵ "When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you. Even though you offer many prayers, I will not listen because your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ "Wash yourselves! Become clean! Get your evil deeds out of my sight. Stop doing evil.

⁸ And a highway will be there, and it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it will be for those who walk in the Way. Wicked fools will not go there. ⁹ No lion will be there, nor will any ravenous beast go up in it. They will not be found there. But the redeemed will walk there. ¹⁰ And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and enter Zion, with singing and everlasting joy on their head; gladness and joy shall reach them; and sorrow and sighing shall flee.

²⁹ He gives power to the weary, and he increases power for the powerless. ³⁰ Even young people grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. ³¹ "Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary! They will walk and not be faint."

² they saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.

⁹ But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. ¹⁰ That is why, for Christ's sake, I am content in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

⁵ who through faith are protected by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us.

²⁹ "Relent and do not be unjust. Reconsider, for my integrity is at stake.

² "Doubtless you are the people, and wisdom will die with you!

⁹ "What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have?

⁴ Indeed, you have closed their mind from understanding; therefore, you will not let them triumph.

⁹ "It is not the old that are wise, nor the aged that understand what is right.

⁷ And it happened after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.

¹⁸ When you return, you will see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not."

⁵ I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between his brethren,

⁶ "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope.

²⁵ My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away; they see no good; ²⁶ They pass by like a ship made of reeds, like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

⁹ A man's heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

²¹ There are many plans in a man's heart, but the LORD's counsel will prevail.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might; for in Sheol—where you are going—no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything.

¹⁰ ⌊Make a plan⌋, but it will be frustrated! Speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us!

¹⁰ I said in the pause of my days, I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years.

³⁷ Who can speak and it will happen if the Lord has not commanded it?

¹³ I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that I often planned to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have some harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

¹⁵ And in this confidence I intended to come to you first, that you might benefit twice; ¹⁶ I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea. ¹⁷ When I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or do I make my plans in a fleshly manner so that in the same breath I say, "Yes, Yes" and "No, No"?

¹³ Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.” ¹⁴ You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. ¹⁵ Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that."

⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, If only it was evening! And at evening you will say, If only morning would come! Because of the fear in your hearts and the things which your eyes will see.

³ So am I allotted months of futility for me, And nights of misery have they assigned to me. ⁴ "I go to bed and I think: "When will it be morning?" But the night drags on, and I toss till dawn.

¹³ When I say, 'My bed will comfort me, and my couch will ease my complaint,' ¹⁴ Thou wilt frighten me with dreams, and terrify me with visions.

¹⁴ With the light, riseth the murderer, He slayeth the poor and needy, And, in the night, he becometh like a thief. ¹⁵ And the eye of the adulterer waits for dusk, saying, 'No eye will see me,' and he places a covering on his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves in; they know not the light:

¹³ "For now I would be lying down in peace. I would be asleep and at rest.

²¹ before I go to the place of no return, to the land of darkness and the shadow of death, ²² to the land of dark night, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness."

¹⁴ "If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait for my change (release) to come.

¹ My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave is ready for me.

²³ "Yes, I know that you will bring me to death, to the house appointed for all living.

¹⁴ Wait for the LORD; be strong and let thy heart take courage: yea, wait for the LORD.

⁸ If I go up to heaven, you are there: or if I make my bed in the underworld, you are there.

² His burial shall be in peace: he has been removed out of the way.

²⁵ the LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. ²⁶ Teth It is good to wait quietly in the salvation of the LORD.

²⁸ "So man wastes away like something rotten, like a garment eaten by moths.

²⁶ Even after my skin has been destroyed, clothed in my flesh I will see God,

²⁶ They lie together in the soil, And worms cover them both.

³² Yet is he carried to the graves, and watch is kept over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

²⁰ "The womb forgets them. The worm finds them sweet. They are no longer remembered. Wickedness is broken like a tree.

³⁰ "My skin grows black on me and my bones burn with fever.

¹⁰ You do not abandon me to the grave or allow your holy one to decay.

⁹ That he should still live forever, and not see corruption.

¹¹ "'Your pride has been brought down to the grave along with the music of your harps. Maggots are spread out like a bed under you, and worms cover you.'

²⁷ because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. ²⁸ You have made known to me the paths of life, You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’ ²⁹ "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and that his tomb is among us to this day. ³⁰ But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne. ³¹ he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to hades, nor did his flesh see decay.

³⁴ In fact, God raised Him from the dead never to see decay. As He has said: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings I promised to David.’ ³⁵ Further, it is stated elsewhere, ‘You will not allow your Holy One to see decay’. ³⁶ For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep. His body was buried with his fathers and saw decay. ³⁷ But the One whom God raised from the dead did not see decay.

⁴² So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable.

⁵³ For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. ⁵⁴ When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

⁶ Is not your pious fear your confidence, And your flawless ways your expectation?

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him; but I will defend my ways before him.

¹⁰ "He beats me down on every side until I am gone. He uproots my hope like a tree.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest; ¹⁸ "Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver's shout. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.

¹³ "It eats away parts of his skin. Death's firstborn devours his limbs. ¹⁴ "He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors.

¹⁸ He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. ¹⁹ "On the other hand a man may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in his bones. ²⁰ »His very being finds food repulsive and he loathes the choicest meal. ²¹ "His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his bones, once hidden, now stick out. ²² Yea, his soul draws near to the Pit, and his life to the dealers of death. ²³ "Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, ²⁴ to be gracious to him and say: 'Spare him from going down to the pit. I have found a ransom for him!' ²⁵ "His flesh is renewed like a child's. It is restored as in the days of his youth. ²⁶ "He prays to God and finds favor with him. He sees God's face and shouts for joy! God restores him to his righteous state. ²⁷ "He comes to men and says: 'I sinned, and perverted what was right, but I did not get what I deserved.' ²⁸ "He redeemed me from going down to the pit, and I will live to enjoy the light.

⁴ I am counted among those who go down into the pit. I am like a man who has no help, ⁵ set apart among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more. They are cut off from your hand. ⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. ⁷ Your wrath lies heavily upon me; You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah. ⁸ You have taken my friends from me. You have made me an abomination to them. I am confined, and I can’t escape.

⁷ Answer me quickly, O LORD for my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will become like those who go down to the pit.

¹⁷ »Yes, it was for my benefit that I suffered such distress. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction. You have put (thrown) (hurled) all my sins behind your back. ¹⁸ "For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise. Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.

¹¹ Then he said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost. We are clean cut off.

⁶ (2:7) To the bottoms of the mountains did I go down; the earth closed her bars about me for ever: when thou broughtest up my life from the pit, O Lord my God!

⁹ Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
