¹ To this Job replied, ² "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your consolation. ³ Bear with me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on. ⁴ "As for me, is my complaint addressed to mortals? Why should I not be impatient? ⁵ Look at me, and be astonished. Lay your hand on your mouth. ⁶ "When I think of it I am dismayed, and trembling seizes my flesh. ⁷ Why do the wicked live? They grow old, and become mighty in power. ⁸ Their children are ever with them, and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe without fear, and the rod of God is not upon them. ¹⁰ Their bulls breed without fail. Their cows calve, and do not miscarry. ¹¹ They send forth their children by flocks, and their sons lead the dance. ¹² They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the flute. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol ¹⁴ "They say to God: 'Leave us alone! We do not desire to know your ways.' ¹⁵ "Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what do we gain if we pray to him? ¹⁶ Lo, their prosperity is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me ¹⁷ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out, and their calamity comes on them! He shares out pangs in His anger; ¹⁸ "How often are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away? ¹⁹ [Ye say], God lays up his iniquity for his sons. Let him recompense it to himself that he may know it. ²⁰ Let his own eyes see his destruction. Let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty. ²¹ For what does he care for his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off? ²² Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since he himself judges high ones? ²³ One dies in his full strength, wholly secure and at ease; ²⁴ His sides are full of milk, his bones are wet with marrow. ²⁵ Another dieth with bitterness of soul, having never tasted any thing good. ²⁶ They lie together in the soil, And worms cover them both. ²⁷ "Look, I know your thoughts, the devices with which you would wrong me. ²⁸ You ask, 'Where is the noble person's house?' and 'Where are the tents where the wicked live?' ²⁹ Have ye not asked the wayfarers? and do ye not regard their tokens: ³⁰ that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led forth to the day of wrath? ³¹ Who denounces his way to his face? And who repays him for what he has done? ³² Yet is he carried to the graves, and watch is kept over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him. ³⁴ How then, can you console me so worthlessly? What is left of your answers is treachery."

⁷ When they told Jotham he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them, Listen to me, you men of Shechem, so that God will listen to you.

³ "But I want to speak to the Almighty and to argue my case with God. ⁴ For, in truth, ye, do besmear with falsehood, Worthless physicians, all of you!

¹¹ "Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you?

² I have heard many things like these; Miserable comforters are you all.

² "When will you end these speeches? Be sensible, and then we can talk.

¹ »Listen to my words Job. Pay attention to everything I say.

³¹ "Pay attention, Job, and listen to me! Be silent, and I will speak. ³² "If you have anything to say answer me. Speak up, for I want you to be cleared. ³³ "But if not, then listen to me. Be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.

² "Hear my words, you wise men, and listen to me, you who know,

² Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.

¹ We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

⁴ "I have become a laughingstock to my friends! I called upon God and he answered. Yet I am a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless! ⁵ "Men at ease have contempt for misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are slipping.

⁹ "Would it turn out well if he examined you? Could you deceive him as you might deceive men?

¹³ "Keep silent and let me speak! Then let come to me what may.

¹⁰ People gaped at me with mouths wide open; they slap me in their scorn and gather together against me.

²⁰ My scorners are my friends; my eye pours out tears to God.

² »Mockers surrounded me. My eye dwells on their provocation.

⁹ And Moses spoke thus to the Israelites, but they did not listen to Moses, because of discouragement and because of hard work.

¹⁶ Do not take your servant to be a good-for-nothing woman: for my words have come from my stored-up sorrow and pain.

²⁶ As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, "Help, my lord, O king." ²⁷ He said, “If the LORD doesn’t help you, where could I get help for you? From of the threshing floor, or from the wine press?”

¹¹ "What strength do I have, that I should wait and hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?

¹¹ "Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I the sea, or a sea monster, that you set a guard over me? ¹³ When I say, 'My bed will comfort me, and my couch will ease my complaint,' ¹⁴ Thou wilt frighten me with dreams, and terrify me with visions. ¹⁵ so that my soul chooses strangling and death rather than [these] my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe my life; I would not live alway: Let me alone; for my days are vanity. ¹⁷ What is man, that thou makest much of him? and that thou settest thy heart upon him? ¹⁸ »For you examine us every morning and test us every moment. ¹⁹ How long will you not look away from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ »Have I sinned? What have I done to you, O watcher of all humanity? Why have you made me your target? Am I a burden to you? ²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my guilt? For now I shall lie in the dust, and you will seek me, but I will be no more."

¹ "I loathe my very life. I will therefore give free rein to my complaint and speak out in my bitterness. ² "I will say to God: 'Do not condemn me, but tell me what charges you have against me.

¹ My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning? ² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not answer; and in the night, and am not silent. ³ Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.

¹¹ Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God. For I shall still praise him, my salvation and my God.

³ I remember God and I murmur, I muse, and my spirit swooneth. [Selah.] ⁴ You hold my eyes from closing: I am so troubled that I cannot speak. ⁵ I thought upon the days of old, the years of bygone ages. ⁶ I remember my song in the night,—With my own heart, I commune, And my spirit, maketh search:— ⁷ Will the Lord reject me forever and not show favor again? ⁸ Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?" Selah.

¹ A prayer of one afflicted, when he grows faint and pours out his lament before the LORD. O LORD, hear my prayer, and let my cry for help come to you.

² I pour out my complaint before him. I tell him my troubles. ³ When my spirit faints within me, you know my way. On the path where I walk, they have hidden a trap for me;

³⁸ Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.”

¹⁹ They told him: "Be quiet. Do not say a word. Come with us and be our priest and adviser. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or to be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?"

¹² And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and everyone tore his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads,

⁸ Upright men are appalled at this, And the innocent man rouses himself against the polluted,

²⁰ I'm a pile of skin and bones; I have barely escaped by the skin of my teeth." ²¹ "Have pity on me, my friends! Have pity on me because God's hand has struck me down.

⁹ Nobles would resfrain from speaking, covering their mouths with their hands.

⁴ Behold, I am slight; how can I reply to You? I place my hand upon my mouth.

⁹ I remain silent; I do not open my mouth, for you are the one who acted

³² If you've foolishly exalted yourself or if you've plotted evil, put your hand over your mouth.

¹³ therefore the prudent person remains silent at such a time, for the time is evil.

¹⁶ The nations will see and be ashamed of all their might. They will lay their hand on their mouth. Their ears will be deaf.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

³ I remember God and I murmur, I muse, and my spirit swooneth. [Selah.]

¹⁵ Ever since I was young, I have been suffering and near death. I have endured your terrors, and now I am in despair.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of you. I am afraid of your judgments.

¹⁹ Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. ²⁰ My soul still remembers them, and is bowed down within me.

¹⁶ I heard and my body trembled! My lips quivered at the voice. Rottenness entered into my bones and I tremble. I must wait quietly for the day of trouble, for the people who invade us.

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper. Those who provoke God are secure, who carry their god in their hands.

¹⁰ They close up their callous hearts. With their mouth they speak proudly.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading like a green tree in its native soil:

³ For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For they have no pain; their bodies are fat and strong. ⁵ They are free from the burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace and violence covers them like a garment. ⁷ Their eyes bulge with fat, their minds pass the limits of conceit. ⁸ They scoff and speak with malice; in arrogance, they threaten oppression. ⁹ They set their mouth against heaven; and their tongue passed on over the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore their people return to them, and they drink up waters of abundance. ¹¹ Then they say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?" ¹² Look, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches.

¹ You are righteous, O LORD, when I contend with you. Yet I would reason the case with you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are all those at ease who deal very treacherously? ² You plant them, and they take root. They grow and bear fruit. You are near their lips, but far from their mind. ³ You know me, LORD. You see me and test my thoughts toward you. Pull the wicked out like sheep for slaughter; set them apart for the day of butchering.

¹⁷ This order is announced by the observers, and the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over human kingdoms and grants them to whomever he desires, and he places the least important of men over them.'

¹³ Your eyes are too pure to see evil, and you are not able to look at wrongdoing. Why do you look at the treacherous? Why are you silent when the wicked swallows up someone more righteous than him?

¹⁵ He takes up all of them with the hook; he catches them in his net, and gathers them in his dragnet. Therefore he rejoices and is glad. ¹⁶ Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his dragnet, because by them his life is luxurious, and his food is good.

² The beast I saw looked like a leopard. His feet were like the feet of a bear. His mouth was like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power, his throne, and great authority. ³ One of the heads of the beast appeared to be fatally wounded. But the mortal wound was healed, and the whole world was astonished and followed the beast. ⁴ Men worshipped the dragon, because he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who can make war against him?" ⁵ It was allowed to utter great boasts and blasphemies, and to exert authority for forty-two months. ⁶ He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, to slander his name, and his dwelling place, and those who live in heaven. ⁷ It was allowed to wage war against the saints and to conquer them. It was also given authority over every tribe, people, languages, and nation.

² With whom the kings of the earth have committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her adultery. ³ And the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, where I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. ⁴ And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and of the filthiness of her adulteries:

³ I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his dwelling. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and are crushed in the gate, with none to deliver them.

¹⁹ "He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived.

¹⁰ "His children must make amends to the poor. He must give back his wealth.

²⁸ "A flood will carry off his house. Rushing waters will wash away his possessions on the day of God's wrath.

¹⁴ from men by your hand, Yahweh, from men of the world, whose portion is in this life. You fill the belly of your cherished ones. Your sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.

⁶ Children's children are a crown of the aged, and the fathers are the honour of the children.

³⁴ »Let God remove his rod from me. Do not let dread of him terrify me.

²¹ "Terrifying sounds fill his ears. When all seems well, marauders attack him.

¹¹ "Terrors startle him on every side and chase him at his heels.

⁵ They are free from the burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men.

¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.

¹⁹ creating fruit of lips. Peace, peace to the far and near," says the LORD, "and I will heal him. ²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea, which cannot rest, and whose waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."

²⁶ No one will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will fulfil the number of your days.

¹³ He will love you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your land (the grain, new wine, and oil), the offspring of your herds, and the lambs of your flock, in the land that the LORD promised your ancestors he would give you. ¹⁴ "God will bless you more than any other people. There will not be a male or a female barren among you or your livestock.

¹¹ the LORD will grant you abundant prosperity in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.

¹³ Our barns will be full, filled with all kinds of provision; our sheep will bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields. ¹⁴ Our oxen will pull heavy loads, there will be no breaking in and no going away, and no crying in our streets.

¹ I considered all this in my heart and declared that the righteous and their works are in the hand of God. No man knows if love or hatred awaits him in the future. ² The same fate comes to everyone: to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked, to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As with the good man, so also to the sinner; as with those who swear an oath, so also those who fear oaths.

¹⁶ Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance. ¹⁷ And he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said: ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my produce and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?' ²¹ This is how it will be for anyone who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich toward God.”

¹⁹ "There was once a rich man, who used to dress in purple and fine linen, and to live in luxury every day.

⁴¹ Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction, and increases their families like a flock.

³ Children are an inheritance from the LORD. They are a blessing from him. ⁴ Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. ⁵ Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They shall not be put to shame when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

²¹ His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.

²⁷ Why did you flee secretly, and deceive me, and did not tell me, that I might have sent you away with mirth and with songs, with tambourine and with harp;

¹² And the harp and the viol, the tambourine and flutes and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor consider the work of his hands.

¹³ and behold joy and rejoicing, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: -- Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die.

⁴ lying on ivory beds, stretching out on your couches, eating lambs from the flock, and fattened calves from the stall, ⁵ "You sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David you improvise on musical instruments. ⁶ who drink bowls of wine, and they anoint with the best of oils; but they are not grieved for the breaking of Joseph!

¹¹ "If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment.

⁴ For they have no pain; their bodies are fat and strong.

³⁸ For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. ³⁹ and knew nothing about it until the Flood came and swept them all away, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

¹⁹ Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?'

²⁸ It was the same in the days of Lot: People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. ²⁹ But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

¹⁷ "They said to God: 'Leave us alone.' They asked: 'What can the Almighty do to us?'

⁴ The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek. All his thoughts are "There is no God."

¹¹ He says in his heart, "God has forgotten. He has hidden his face. He never sees."

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

²⁹ Since they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD,

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, shouting in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You not to torture me!”

³⁷ Then all the people from the region surrounding the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were terrified. So he got into a boat and started back.

¹⁹ And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

⁴⁵ But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. ⁴⁶ Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? ⁴⁷ Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

²³ He who hates me, hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have seen and hated both Me and My Father.

²⁸ And since they did not see fit to retain the knowledge of God, God gave them over to a base mind, to do what ought not to be done.

⁷ because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s Law, nor can it do so.

¹⁰ and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. ¹¹ For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie, ¹² and so that all may be condemned who have not believed the truth but have taken pleasure in wickedness.

³ For the time will come when men will not tolerate sound doctrine, but with itching ears they will gather around themselves teachers to suit their own desires. ⁴ So they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

² Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD that I should listen to him and let Israel go? I don't know about the LORD, nor will I let Israel go!"

⁹ For he has said, It profits a man nothing when he is accepted with God.

³ that you said, What use is it to you? and, What benefit I from my sin?

⁴ They say: "We will overcome with our tongues. With lips such as ours, who can be our master?"

⁹ lest I be full, deny you, and say, 'Who is the LORD?' or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

¹¹ Remove from the way, turn aside from the path, cause to cease from before us the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹ "I have not spoken in secret, from somewhere in a land of darkness. I have not said to Jacob's descendants: Seek me in vain. I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right.

⁶ When I fed them, they were satisfied; they were satisfied and their heart was lifted up; therefore they forgot me.

¹³ "And you say 'What a burden!' and sniff contemptuously at it," says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "when you present maimed, crippled, and diseased animals, and when you bring the offering. Should I accept this from your hand?" asks the LORD. ¹⁴ "Cursed is the one who cheats, who has in his flock a male and vows it, but instead sacrifices a blemished one to the Lord! For I am a great king," says the LORD of hosts, "and my name is awesome among the nations."

⁷ Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

²⁴ Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

⁶ My soul, don't come into their council. My glory, don't be united to their assembly; for in their anger they killed men. In their self-will they hamstrung cattle.

²¹ And he said, Naked I came out of my mother's womb and naked I will return there. the LORD gave and the LORD has taken away, praise the name of the LORD.

⁹ "Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ¹⁰ "In his hand are the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.

¹⁸ "Yet he filled their houses with good things. Yet the plans of the wicked are repugnant.

¹ Blessed is the man who doesn't walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers;

⁶ those who put confidence in their wealth and boast about their great riches? ⁷ A man cannot at all redeem a brother, nor give to God a ransom for him,

⁵ but God will pull you down forever. He will snatch you and tear you away from your tent, and he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah ⁶ And the righteous will see and fear, and will laugh at him, saying, ⁷ Behold, the man who did not make God his strength; but he trusted in his many riches; he was strong in his destruction.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, do not comply with them;"

⁸ Keep far away from her. Do not go near the door of her house.

⁸ Just as no human being has control over the wind to restrain it, so also no human being has control over the day of his death. Just as no one is discharged during war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

² So he called him in to ask, ‘What is this I hear about you? Turn in an account of your management, for you cannot be manager any longer.’

²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

⁵ "The lamp of the wicked is snuffed out. The flame of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ "The light in his tent becomes dark. The lamp beside him will be put out.

¹⁸ "He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.

¹⁰ Many sorrows come to the wicked, but loving kindness shall surround him who trusts in Yahweh.

⁷ Indeed, we are consumed by your anger and terrified by your wrath. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days pass away in Your wrath; we finish our years like a murmur.

⁹ The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.

²⁰ He who curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in obscure darkness.

²⁰ for there will be no reward to the evil man. The lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.

⁸ The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’

⁴⁶ the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour he is not aware of, and he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

⁸ But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, there will be wrath and anger. ⁹ There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Greek;

⁷ In the greatness of your majesty you broke down your enemies. You sent forth your anger, it consumed them like stubble.

²⁵ "Will you torment a leaf driven two and fro? Will you chase after dry chaff?

⁴ This is not so for the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

⁵ Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them.

¹³ My God, make them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind.

²⁴ Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the stubble and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root will be as rottenness and their blossom will go up as dust, because they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

¹³ The nations roar like the roar of many waters, but he will rebuke him, and he will flee far away. And they are chased like chaff of the mountains before the wind and like tumbleweed before the storm.

⁵ »Your cruel enemies will be swept away like dust in a windstorm. It will be sudden and unexpected like chaff in the wind.

²⁴ No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

¹⁵ "See I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them. You will reduce the hills to chaff. ¹⁶ "You will winnow them. The wind will pick them up and a gale will blow them away. But you will rejoice in the LORD and glory in the Holy One of Israel.

²⁴ I'll scatter them like chaff blown away by a desert wind.

³ Therefore, they will be like the morning cloud, and like the dew of early morning going away, like chaff swirling from the threshing floor, or like smoke from a window.

¹⁰ Entangled like thorns and drunken from drink, they are consumed like dry stubble.

¹² His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."

⁷ "If you do what is right, will not your attitude improve? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door. It desires to have you, but you must master it."

⁵ You shall not bow down to them in worship or serve them; because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of the parents, to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me,

³⁴ Do I not have this laid up in store, sealed up in my treasuries?

⁴¹ if I sharpen my glittering sword, my hand grasps it in judgment; I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me.

³⁹ I am weak today, though anointed king. These men, the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May the LORD reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.”

²⁴ And put your gold in the dust, even your gold of Ophir among the rocks of the valleys;

⁵ He will repay my enemies for their evil; in your faithfulness destroy them.

⁹ May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ may his children be wandering beggars, let them be sought from their ruins. ¹¹ Let the creditor seize all that he has. Let strangers plunder the fruit of his labor. ¹² May no one extend gracious love to him, or show favor to his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his descendants be cut off. Let their name be blotted out in the next generation. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his ancestors be remembered before the LORD, and let the sin of his mother not be blotted out. ¹⁵ let them be always before the LORD, so that He may cut off the memory of them from the earth; ¹⁶ For he didn't think to extend gracious love; he harassed to death the poor, the needy, and the broken hearted. ¹⁷ Yea, he loved cursing, and it came to him; he also had no pleasure in blessing, and it was far from him. ¹⁸ He put on cursing like a robe, and it has come into his body like water, and into his bones like oil. ¹⁹ May those curses wrap around him like a garment, or like a belt that one always wears. ²⁰ May this be the way the LORD repays my accuser, those who speak evil against me. ²¹ But You, Sovereign LORD, deal kindly with me for Your name's sake; because Your mercy is good, deliver me. ²² For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. ²³ I fade away like an evening shadow. I am shaken off like a locust. ²⁴ My knees are weak through fasting, my body is thin and lacks fat. ²⁵ I am become also a taunt unto them; when they see me, they shake their head. ²⁶ Help me, O LORD my God; save me according to your loyal love, ²⁷ that they may know that this is your hand; that you, LORD, have done it. ²⁸ Let them curse, but you bless. When they arise, they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. ²⁹ May my accusers be clothed with shame and wrapped in their humiliation as with a robe. ³⁰ With my mouth I will greatly thank the Lord; and praise him in the midst of many: ³¹ for he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those judging his life.

²¹ prepare thy sons for slaughter, for the sins of their fathers; that they may not rise and possess the land, and fill the World with wars.

⁴ He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows. We considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. ⁵ But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed. ⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray; each one has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

²⁹ "In those days people will no longer say, 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, but the children's teeth have been set on edge.'

² "What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel: 'The fathers eat sour grapes, but the children's teeth are set on edge?'

¹⁴ '"Now suppose this son has a son. The son sees all the sins that his father does. He is afraid, so he does not do such things.

¹⁹ Yet you say, Why does not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son has done what is lawful and right and has kept all my statutes and has done them, he will surely live. ²⁰ The soul that sins, it will die. The son will not bear the iniquity of the father, nor will the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of a righteous man will be upon him and the wickedness of a wicked man will be upon him.

¹⁸ When you return, you will see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not."

¹⁹ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰ But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

²⁷ For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done.

³¹ So you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets. ³² Fill up, then, the measure of the sins of your fathers. ³³ You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape the sentence of hell? ³⁴ Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town. ³⁵ And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

⁵ But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

²¹ God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

¹⁴ Alexander, the metal-worker, did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he did.

⁶ Give back to her as she has done to others; pay her back double for what she has done; mix her a double portion in her own cup.

¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but will do so no more; he openeth his eyes, and he is not.

³ You have shown your people hard things; You have given us wine that staggers.

⁸ For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, full of foaming wine mixed with spices. He pours it out. Indeed the wicked of the earth drink and drink it to its very dregs.

¹⁷ Awake, awake! Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of his wrath, you who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes men stagger.

¹⁵ "This is what the LORD the God of Israel said to me: 'Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my fury, and make all the nations to whom I am sending you drink from it. ¹⁶ And they shall drink, and stagger, and go mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.

⁷ Babylon was a golden cup in the LORD's hand, making the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine, therefore the nations have gone mad.

²³ In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.

¹⁰ will drink the wine of God's wrath, which has been poured undiluted into the cup of his anger. He will be tortured with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the lamb.

¹⁵ And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

⁵ "Man's days are determined. You have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.

²¹ »His sons are honored and he does not know it. They are brought low and he does not see it.

²³ But you, O God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

²⁴ Do not take me away in the midst of my days; Your years are through all generations.

¹⁸ I hated all the work I had done under the sun, because I would leave it behind for the man who comes after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

²⁷ "The rich man said, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house ²⁸ for I have five brothers; let him warn them so that they will not also come to this place of torture.'

¹⁸ Look, he does not trust in his servants and he charges his angels with error.

¹⁵ "If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,

¹⁷ "Shall one who hates justice rule? And will you condemn the righteous Mighty One? ¹⁸ Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art worthless? and to princes, Ye are wicked? ¹⁹ who does not respect the persons of rulers, nor regards the rich more than the poor. For they all are the work of his hands.

¹¹ who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?

²² "God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him?

² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? Let him that disputes with God answer this.

¹ A Psalm by Asaph. God presides in the great assembly. He judges among the gods.

⁵ Who is like the LORD our God, who is enthroned on high, ⁶ who stoops down to view both heaven and earth?

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a district, don't marvel at the matter: for one official is eyed by a higher one; and there are officials over them.

¹³ Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or has instructed him, as his counselor? ¹⁴ Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him? Who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding?

²² He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. ²³ He brings princes to nothing and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

⁹ Woe to him who fights with the One who formed him! A potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to its former, What are you making? Or does your work say, He has no hands?

³⁴ Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counsellor?

¹⁶ For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

³ Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

⁴ For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

⁶ And the angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, he has kept in eternal chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day,

¹ Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the Abyss, holding in his hand a great chain. ² He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. ³ He threw him into the pit, and closed it and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that time, he must be released for a short while.

¹² And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And there were open books, and one of them was the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books. ¹³ The sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them, and all were judged according to what they had done. ¹⁴ And death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress will overtake him. The hand of everyone who is in misery will come on him. ²³ "With his belly full, God will vent his burning anger against him and rain down his blows upon him.

¹⁷ For he shall take nothing when he dies; neither shall his glory descend with him.

⁴ For they have no pain; their bodies are fat and strong. ⁵ They are free from the burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men.

²⁷ »His face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh.

⁸ This will bring healing to your body, and refreshment to your bones.

⁸ "You know your father and his followers are mighty warriors. They are as fierce as a mother bear whose cubs have just been killed. Your father has a lot of experience in fighting wars. He will not spend the night with the others.

¹² She said, "As the LORD your God lives, I do not have anything baked, except a handful of flour in a jar, and a little oil in a jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die."

²⁰ "Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter in heart?

¹¹ "Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁸ He would not let me take my breath, but I would be full of bitter grief.

¹ "I loathe my very life. I will therefore give free rein to my complaint and speak out in my bitterness.

²³ "With his belly full, God will vent his burning anger against him and rain down his blows upon him.

¹⁰ The heart knows its own bitterness; and no one else can share its joy.

² God gives a man wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart desires; yet God does not enable him to enjoy it—instead someone else ends up enjoying it. This is vanity—indeed, it is a grievous ill!

¹⁵ What can I say? For he has spoken to me, and he himself has done it. I will walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul. ¹⁶ Lord, men live by these things; and my spirit finds life in all of them: You restore me, and cause me to live. ¹⁷ »Yes, it was for my benefit that I suffered such distress. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction. You have put (thrown) (hurled) all my sins behind your back.

¹⁶ Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I will cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with care; and they shall drink water by measure, and in dismay: ¹⁷ so that they will lack food and water, and they will be appalled with one another, and they will waste away because of their guilt.

¹⁸ Son of man, take your food with shaking fear, and your water with trouble and care;

¹⁸ "Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver's shout. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.

¹⁴ if I have said to corruption, 'You are my father;' to the worm, 'My mother,' and 'My sister,'

²⁶ Even after my skin has been destroyed, clothed in my flesh I will see God,

¹¹ "The youthful vigor that fills his bones will lie with him in the dust.

²⁰ "The womb forgets them. The worm finds them sweet. They are no longer remembered. Wickedness is broken like a tree.

¹⁴ Like sheep, they are laid in the grave. Death will shepherd them. The upright will rule them in the morning. Their forms will decay in the grave, far away from their comfortable homes.

² The same fate comes to everyone: to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked, to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As with the good man, so also to the sinner; as with those who swear an oath, so also those who fear oaths.

¹¹ "'Your pride has been brought down to the grave along with the music of your harps. Maggots are spread out like a bed under you, and worms cover you.'

⁸ Just as I have seen, those who plow lawlessness And those who sow misery are harvesting it. ⁹ By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. ¹⁰ The lion roareth, and the fierce lion howleth - yet the teeth of the young lions are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered.

³ I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his dwelling. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and are crushed in the gate, with none to deliver them. ⁵ The hungry eat his harvest, and take him to the thorns, and the snare snuffs up their wealth.

³ "Does God pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right? ⁴ "When your children sinned against him, he gave them over to the power of their sin. ⁵ "But if you will look to God and plead with the Almighty, ⁶ if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your rightful place.

²⁰ "All his days the wicked man suffers torment and the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. ²¹ "Terrifying sounds fill his ears. When all seems well, marauders attack him. ²² "He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. ²³ "He wanders about as food for vultures and he knows the day of darkness is at hand. ²⁴ "Distress and anguish fill him with terror. They overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack. ²⁵ because he stretches out his hand against God, and sets himself against the Almighty. ²⁶ "He defiantly charges against him with a thick, strong shield. ²⁷ »His face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh. ²⁸ "He will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. ²⁹ "He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. ³⁰ "He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. ³¹ "Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless. He will get nothing in return. ³² "Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. ³³ "He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. ³⁴ »The company of the godless will be barren. And fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. ³⁵ "They conceive trouble and give birth to evil. Their womb fashions deceit."

⁵ "The success of the wicked is brief and the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.

²⁹ "This is the fate God allots the wicked, the heritage appointed for them by God."

³ His anger was also kindled against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

⁷ And it happened after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.

⁴ I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Rise up, look, and help me.

⁸⁶ All Your commands are faithful; they persecute me with lying; help me!

²² Jesus saw that they were arguing, and answered them: "Why are you arguing so in your hearts?

¹⁹ For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.

²⁶ He said to the congregation: "Move away from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you’ll be swept away because of all their sins." ²⁷ So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came out and were standing at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children. ²⁸ Moses said: "This is how you will know that the LORD sent me to do all these things and that it wasn’t my idea: ²⁹ "If these men die a natural death like all other people the LORD has not sent me. ³⁰ "But if the LORD does something totally new, if the ground opens up, swallows them and everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive to their graves; then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt." ³¹ When he finished speaking, the ground under them split, ³² The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all of Korah's men, and all their goods. ³³ They went down alive to their graves with everything that belonged to them. The ground covered them. They disappeared from the assembly. ³⁴ And all Israel around them fled at their cry. For they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.

³ He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, one thousand head of cattle, and five hundred donkeys. He also had a large number of servants. In fact he was the greatest (richest) of all the Orientals in the East!

²² "Your enemies will be clothed in shame. The tents of the wicked will be no more."

⁷ he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him will say: Where is he?

³⁷ "I would give him an account of all my steps. Like a prince I would approach him.

³⁶ yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not; and I looked for him, but he could not be found.

⁵ but God will pull you down forever. He will snatch you and tear you away from your tent, and he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah ⁶ And the righteous will see and fear, and will laugh at him, saying,

⁹ Woe to him who robs evil booty for his house, to set his nest on high, to be delivered from the hand of evil! ¹⁰ You have plotted shame for your house, cutting off many peoples and sinning against your life. ¹¹ For the stone from the wall shall cry out, and the cross-beam from the wood shall answer it.

⁴ I will cause it to go out," says the LORD of hosts, "and it will enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by my name; and it will remain in the midst of his house, and will destroy it with its timber and its stones."

⁸ Nor do those who pass by say: "The blessing of the LORD be upon you! We bless you in the name of the LORD."

⁵ The Lord is at your right hand. He will crush kings in the day of his wrath.

⁴ Wealth cannot profit on the day of wrath; but righteousness deliver from death.

⁴ The LORD has made everything for its own end—yes, even the wicked for the day of evil.

² The LORD is a jealous God and avenges. The LORD avenges and is full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies.

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,

⁹ if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. ¹⁰ Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge the corrupt desires of the flesh and despise authority. Bold and self-willed, these men are unafraid to slander angelic majesties. ¹¹ Yet even angels, although they are greater in strength and power, do not bring a slanderous accusation against them from the Lord. ¹² But these, speaking evil of the things that they do not understand (as natural animals without reason, who are made to be taken and destroyed), shall utterly perish in their own corruption, ¹³ The harm they will suffer is the wages of their wickedness. They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deception as they feast with you. ¹⁴ They have eyes full of adultery, that never cease from sin; they entice unstable souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! ¹⁵ They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of wickedness. ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression by a donkeya beast without speechwho spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's madness. ¹⁷ These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.

⁷ But by the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

¹³ They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

¹⁷ for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"

¹⁰ But for the one who hates him, he will repay him by destroying him. He will not delay dealing with someone who hates him.

⁷ Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. ⁸ I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things. ⁹ "'Why did you despise what the LORD has promised by doing what is detestable in his sight? "'You struck down Uriah the Hittite with a battle sword. "'You took his wife to be your own. "'You killed him with the sword of the Ammonite army. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' ¹¹ "This is what the LORD says: 'Look, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² "'You did this secretly. I will make this happen in broad daylight in front of all Israel.'"

¹⁹ You shall speak to him, saying, 'the LORD says, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”' You shall speak to him, saying, 'the LORD says, “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your blood, even yours.”'” ²⁰ Then Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, my enemy?" He said, "I have found you because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD. ²¹ 'Look, I am bringing disaster on you, and I will sweep away after you. I will cut off for Ahab every male in Israel, bond or free. ²² I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because you made me angry and have caused Israel to sin.' ²³ »Concerning Jezebel, the LORD says: Dogs will eat her body in the city of Jezreel. ²⁴ Dogs will eat whoever belongs to Ahab and who dies in the city. The birds of the sky will eat whoever dies in the fields."

¹⁹ [Ye say], God lays up his iniquity for his sons. Let him recompense it to himself that he may know it.

¹¹ "Who has preceded me that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is mine.

²¹ These things you have done, and I have kept silence; you thought that I was like yourself, but I will rebuke you, and set in order before your eyes.

¹³ transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and murmuring words of falsehood from the heart.

³³ How you trim your way to seek love! Therefore even the wicked women you have taught your ways. ³⁴ On your skirts is found the lifeblood of the innocent poor, even though you didn't catch them breaking in. Yet despite all these things, ³⁵ "Yet you said, 'I am innocent. Surely his anger has turned away from me.' "Look, I will judge you, because you say, 'I have not sinned.'

¹⁸ For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

²⁵ And as he reasoned about righteousness, self control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid, and answered: Go away for now. When I have a convenient time I will call for you.

¹⁹ Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

¹¹ But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly wrong.

¹³ For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

²¹ Speak to him do the gods of the mighty out of the midst of sheol, With his helpers—they have gone down, They have lain with the uncircumcised, The pierced of the sword. ²² Assyria is there and all of its assembly; all around it are its graves, all of them killed, those fallen by the sword, ²³ Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is around her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who caused terror in the land of the living. ²⁴ “There is Elam and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who have gone down uncircumcised into the lower parts of the earth, who caused their terror in the land of the living, and have borne their shame with those who go down to the pit. ²⁵ They have set her a bed among the slain with all her multitude. Her graves are around her; all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for their terror was caused in the land of the living, and they have borne their shame with those who go down to the pit. He is put among those who are slain. ²⁶ Meshech and Tubal are there and all of its hordes, all around him its graves, all of them uncircumcised and killed by the sword, for they gave their terror in the land of the living. ²⁷ »‘They do not lie with the godless warriors who died and went down to the grave with their weapons of war. Their swords were placed under their heads. Their iniquity rested on their bones because they terrified others in the land of the living. ²⁸ And you shall be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised and shall lie with the slain by the sword. ²⁹ “There is Edom, her kings, and all her princes, who in their might are laid with those who are slain by the sword. They will lie with the uncircumcised, and with those who go down to the pit. ³⁰ “There are the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who have gone down with the slain. They are put to shame in the terror which they caused by their might. They lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. ³¹ "'Pharaoh and his army will see these things and be comforted over all the soldiers who have been killed in battle,' proclaims the Sovereign LORD. ³² "'I terrified people in the land of the living. Pharaoh and all his soldiers will be laid among the godless people who were killed in battle,' proclaims the Sovereign LORD."

²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and the angels carried him into AbrahamÆs bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest;

²² "They are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave.

¹⁶ Will they go down to the bars of Sheol? Or shall we descend together into the dust?"

²⁴ They're exalted momentarily, but then they are gone; they are humbled, just like all the others. They are cut down like heads of corn.

²³ "Yes, I know that you will bring me to death, to the house appointed for all living.

⁴ A generation goes, a generation comes, but the earth remains forever.

⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

²⁷ Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment,

⁴ For, in truth, ye, do besmear with falsehood, Worthless physicians, all of you!
