²⁷ But on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement, a holy convocation shall it be unto you, and ye shall fast; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

¹⁰ And once in the year Aaron shall make atonement on its horns, he shall purge it with the blood of purification for their generations: it is most holy to the Lord.

¹¹ Then Aaron shall bring forward the young bull for his own sin offering, to make atonement for himself and his household, and shall slay the young bull for his sin offering;

¹⁵ Then let him put to death the goat of the sin-offering for the people, and take its blood inside the veil and do with it as he did with the blood of the ox, shaking drops of it on and before the cover of the ark.

²⁴ Then he shall bathe himself in water in a holy place, and put on his garments, and come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.

²⁹ "And this shall be a lasting statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month, you must deny yourselves and you must not do any work, whether the native or the alien who is dwelling in your midst, ³⁰ For on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. You will be clean from all your sins before the LORD. ³¹ It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall deny yourselves—it is a lasting statute.

⁹ Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land.

⁷ `And on the tenth of this seventh month a holy convocation ye have, and ye have humbled your souls; ye do no work; ⁸ but you shall offer a burnt offering to the LORD for a pleasant aroma: one young bull, one ram, seven male lambs a year old, all without defect; ⁹ And for their sacrifices, three tenths of flour tempered with oil to every calf, two tenths to a ram, ¹⁰ and eight cups for each of the seven lambs. ¹¹ one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering of atonement, and the continual burnt offering, and its meal offering, and their drink offerings.

²¹ And even there at the water beside Ahava, I proclaimed a fast, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and our children and all our substance.

¹³ But when they were sick, I wore sackcloth. I humbled myself with fasting. My prayer returned unanswered.

⁵ Is this the fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to humble his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under himself? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

² At the same time, I, Daniel, mourned for the space of three weeks, ³ I had no pleasing food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, and I put no oil on my body till three full weeks were ended.

¹⁰ I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they will look to Me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him, as one grieves for his firstborn.

³⁷ When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” ³⁸ Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁰ Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. ¹¹ For behold what this very thing, godly sorrow, has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what zeal, what readiness to see justice done! At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

⁹ Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning, and your joy to gloom.
