¹ When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you; ² and put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite. ³ Do not crave his delicacies for it is deceptive food. ⁴ Do not weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint. ⁵ When you fix your gaze on it, it's gone, for it sprouts wings for itself and flies to the sky like an eagle. ⁶ Do not eat the bread of the stingy, and do not desire his delicacies. ⁷ for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. "Eat and drink." he says to you, but his heart is not with you. ⁸ You vomit the morsel you eat and waste your complements. ⁹ Do not speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words. ¹⁰ Do not move the ancient boundary stone. Do not encroach on the fields of the fatherless: ¹¹ for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you. ¹² Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge. ¹³ Do not withhold discipline from a child, if you will beat him with the rod, he will not die. ¹⁴ Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol. ¹⁵ My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine. ¹⁶ My innermost being will be glad when your lips speak what is right. ¹⁷ Do not let your heart envy sinners, but only be in the fear of the LORD all the day. ¹⁸ for there is surely a future life, and what you hope for will not be cut off. ¹⁹ Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path! ²⁰ Do not be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat: ²¹ for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags. ²² Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. ²³ Buy the truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding. ²⁴ The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him. ²⁵ May your father and your mother be glad, and may she who bore you rejoice. ²⁶ My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways. ²⁷ For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well. ²⁸ Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men. ²⁹ Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? ³⁰ To those who linger over wine, to those who come to try mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ³² In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. ³⁴ Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging: ³⁵ "They struck me," you will say, "but I never felt it. They beat me, but I never knew it When will I wake up? I want another drink."

³² They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. ³³ And they were all given their seats before him in order of birth, from the oldest to the youngest: so that they were looking at one another in wonder. ³⁴ And portions were taken unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

¹² These are breakers at your love-feasts, feasting with you without fear, feeding themselves, clouds without water driven about by winds, autumnal trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots,

⁸ "So if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life injured or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. ⁹ And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

²⁷ No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

¹⁹ Their destiny is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on worldly things.

⁴ Let not my heart turn aside to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men who work iniquity; and let me not eat of their delicacies.

⁶ Do not eat the bread of the stingy, and do not desire his delicacies.

⁸ And Daniel having resolved not to pollute himself with the table of the king nor with the wine which he drank, intreated the chamberlain that he might not be denied.

³⁴ But watch yourselves, or your hearts will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and the worries of life—and that day will spring upon you suddenly like a snare.

²² You were taught, with regard to your former manner of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful lusts;

⁵ Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not to your own understanding.

⁷ Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil.

²⁷ He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.

¹² Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

²⁰ A faithful man is rich with blessings; but one who is eager to be rich will not go unpunished.

²¹ Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

¹⁹ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

²⁷ Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

²⁵ I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with the lowly. Do not be conceited.

⁸ But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. ⁹ But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

⁵ Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”

³⁶ Jacob, their father, said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children. Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me."

¹⁴ a messenger approached Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the female donkeys were grazing nearby ¹⁵ And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” ¹⁷ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."

⁶ Surely every man walks in a shadow. Surely they are in an uproar in vain. He heaps up and does not know who will gather them.

³⁶ Turn my heart toward your statutes, not toward selfish gain. ³⁷ Turn my eyes away from looking at worthless things. Revive me in your ways.

²⁴ Riches are not forever: and a crown does not endure for every generation.

² "Utterly pointless," says the Teacher. "Absolutely pointless; everything is pointless."

¹³ There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: wealth hoarded by its owner to his harm. ¹⁴ Those riches perish by misfortune, and if he has fathered a son, there is nothing in his hand.

⁸ "Utterly pointless," says the Teacher. "Everything is pointless."

² Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.

¹⁷ But your eyes and your heart are not, Except on your dishonest gain, And on shedding of innocent blood, And on oppression, and on doing of violence."

²⁹ What I am saying, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none; ³⁰ those who weep, as if they did not; those who are joyful, as if they were not; those who make a purchase, as if they had nothing; ³¹ and those who use the things of this world, as if not dependent on them. For this world in its present form is passing away.

¹⁷ Charge the rich of this world not to be arrogant, nor to set their hopes on such an uncertain thing as riches, but on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

¹ Come on now, you rich people, cry and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your wealth has rotted and moths have eaten your clothing.

¹⁶ For the things in the world--the cravings of the earthly nature, the cravings of the eyes, the show and pride of life--they all come, not from the Father, but from the world.

⁹ "Be careful not to think this wicked thought to yourselves: 'The seventh year, the year of remission, is drawing near,' and you show ill will toward your poor relative and not give to him. He may then call to the LORD on account of you, and you will be guilty of sin.

⁵⁶ "The kindest and most sensitive woman among you, so sensitive and tender that she would not even step on an ant, will become stingy toward the husband she loves or toward her own son or daughter.

⁹ Whoever is generous will be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.

²² A stingy man hurries after riches, and doesn't know that poverty waits for him.

⁸ And Daniel having resolved not to pollute himself with the table of the king nor with the wine which he drank, intreated the chamberlain that he might not be denied. ⁹ God caused the officer in charge to show special favor and kindness to Daniel. ¹⁰ The officer in charge said to Daniel: "I fear my lord the king. He has appointed your food and your drink. Why should he see your faces worse looking than other young people your age? Would you endanger my head with the king?"

¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'

²² Greed, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, haughtiness, folly;

¹⁵ And Delilah said to Sampson, How can you say I love you, when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have deceived me, and have not told me where your great strength lies.

²⁶ Then Absalom said, "If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us." ² Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

²² Kindness is desired in a man. A poor man is better than a liar.

²⁷ Then both the kings with their hearts bent on mischief will speak lies at one table. But it will not prosper. Because an end is still put off for a time,

³ Then some of the teachers of the Law said to themselves: "This man is blaspheming!" ⁴ Knowing their thoughts Jesus said, "Why are you cherishing evil thoughts in your hearts?

³⁹ Now the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who is touching him and what kind of woman she is. She's a sinner!"

³⁷ As Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee invited Him to dine with him; so He went in and reclined at the table. ³⁸ But the Pharisee, noticing that He did not first wash before the meal, was critical. ³⁹ But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. ⁴⁰ You foolish ones! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ So give what is inside to the poor, and then everything will be clean for you. ⁴² Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and rue and every herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former. ⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! Because you love the first seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ A curse on you, because you are like unmarked graves which men walk over without knowing it!" ⁴⁵ One of the experts in the law told Him, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us as well.” ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe to you also, lawyers! for you load men with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe to you! You build tombs for the prophets, but it was your fathers who killed them. ⁴⁸ So you witness that you approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Because of this, the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and others they will persecute.’ ⁵⁰ As a result, this generation will be charged with the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the foundation of the world, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, all of it will be charged to this generation. ⁵² Woe to you experts in the law! For you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” ⁵³ As Jesus was leaving, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him fiercely, interrogating him about many things. ⁵⁴ waiting to catch Him in something He might say.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

⁷ He who corrects a mocker invites insult; he who reproves a wicked man invites abuse. ⁸ Don't rebuke a mocker or he will hate you. Rebuke a wise person, and he will love you.

⁴ Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him. ⁵ Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own pride.

²¹ But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Do not answer him."

⁶ Do not give dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls before swine. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.

¹⁴ The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all of this and were scoffing at Jesus.

⁵² Then the Jews said to him, "Now we really know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, but you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.'

³⁰ The man answered, "Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. ³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who worships Him and does His will. ³² Never before has anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." ³⁴ They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.

⁴⁰ Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are we blind too?”

²⁰ Many of them said, "He is possessed and mad! Why do you listen to him?"

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they blasphemously contradicted what Paul was saying. ⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. But since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.

¹⁸ Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” while others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was proclaiming the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.

³² Now when they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, "We want to hear you again on this subject."

²⁵ When they disagreed among themselves, they began to leave, after Paul had made one final statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: ²⁶ ‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.” ²⁷ For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’ ²⁸ Therefore be it known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!”

²¹ For since in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. ²² Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, ²³ but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, ²⁴ but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

¹⁰ We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are honored, but we are dishonored. ¹¹ To this very hour we are hungry and thirsty, we are poorly clad, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. ¹² We work hard with our own hands. When we are vilified, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; ¹³ when we are slandered, we answer gently. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

¹⁴ "Do not move your neighbor's boundary mark. The ancestors have set this in your inheritance. You will inherit this in the land the LORD your God gives you to possess.

¹⁷ "'Cursed is he who moves his neighbor's boundary mark. All the people will say: Amen.

²⁷ "You would even cast lots for the fatherless and barter away your friend.

⁹ "You have sent widows away empty-handed. You crush the arms of the orphans.

² They move boundary stones, steal flocks, and pasture them. ³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge.

⁹ "The fatherless are torn from the breast; the poor are taken away as security for a loan.

²¹ If I have raised a hand against the fatherless, because I had around me greater support: ²² Then let my arm fall from my shoulder-blade, and my arm be broken from the bone. ²³ For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power.

⁶ They kill the widow and the alien, and murder the fatherless.

²⁸ Don't remove an ancient boundary stone that was set up by your ancestors.

⁵ For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your pursuits, and actually execute judgment between man and man:

³ This is what the LORD says: "Uphold justice and righteousness. Deliver from their oppressor those who have been robbed. Don't mistreat or do violence to the alien, the orphan, or the widow, or shed the blood of innocent people in this place.

¹⁰ And do not oppress the widow, or the fatherless, the alien, or the poor. And do not devise evil in your heart, of a man against his brother.

⁵ I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and do not fear me," says the LORD of hosts.

²⁷ Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

²² "Do not mistreat any widow or orphan. ²³ If you hurt them, they will cry out to me, and I will hear their cry: ²⁴ and My wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

¹⁹ 'Cursed is he who withholds justice from the foreigner, fatherless, and widow.' All the people shall say, 'Amen.'

²⁵ But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives. In the end, he will stand upon the earth.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says the LORD; I will set him in safety from those who malign him.

²³ for the LORD will plead their cause, and strip the soul of those who plunder them.

³³ Thus says the LORD Almighty: "The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah likewise, for all their captors have seized them, they refuse to let them go free. ³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD Almighty, is His name. He shall thoroughly plead their cause, so that he may give rest to the land, and give trouble to the people of Babylon.

³⁶ Therefore thus said the LORD; Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry.

² so as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ if, indeed, you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, ⁴ If you seek it as for silver And search for it as for buried treasures, ⁵ then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

¹ My son, pay attention to my wisdom, and listen closely to my insight, ² that you may maintain discretion, that your lips may preserve knowledge.

¹⁷ Pay attention and listen to the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my teaching,

¹⁹ Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!

³¹ And they come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words. But they will not do them. For with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their unjust gain.

⁵² He said to them: Therefore, every scribe that is trained for the kingdom of heaven, is like the master of a house, who brings out of his treasury things new and old.

²¹ Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and every expression of evil, and humbly receive the word planted in you, which can save your souls. ²² Obey the message; do not merely listen to it, and deceive yourselves. ²³ For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, ²⁴ and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. ²⁵ But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does.

²⁴ One who spares the rod hates his son, but one who loves him is careful to discipline him.

¹⁸ Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.

¹⁵ The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a child left to himself causes shame to his mother.

¹⁷ Discipline your son and he will give you rest, yes, he will give delight to your soul.

¹⁵ Folly is bound up in the heart of a child: the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

⁵ hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

³² But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, do not comply with them;"

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you,

¹ Listen, sons, to a father's instruction. Pay attention and know understanding;

¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grieves his mother.

²⁰ A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

²⁴ The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him. ²⁵ May your father and your mother be glad, and may she who bore you rejoice.

³ Whoever loves wisdom brings joy to his father; but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.

⁴¹ I'll rejoice over them to do good for them, and I'll faithfully plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.

¹⁷ The LORD your God in the midst of you is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over you with joy; he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.

² Just then, some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.”

²³ Bring the fatted calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate. ²⁴ For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.

³² But it was fitting to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

¹¹ I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

⁵ So He called out to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” “No,” they answered.

¹⁹ For what is our hope, our joy, our crown of rejoicing in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? Is it not even you? ²⁰ Indeed, you are our glory and our joy.

⁸ for now I can really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. ⁹ How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we have in God's presence because of you?

¹ My little children, I write this to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

⁴ I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father has commanded us.

³ Because it gave me great joy when some brothers came and testified to the truth about you, how you are walking in Truth. ⁴ I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

⁶ Listen, because I have noble things to say, and what I have to say will reveal what is right.

²⁹ Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen.

⁴ Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or crude joking, which are out of character, but rather thanksgiving.

⁴ Pray that I may declare it clearly, as I should.

² We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body.

¹ Of David. Do not fret because of evildoers; do not be envious of doers of wickedness. ² For like the grass they will dry up quickly, and like green vegetation they will wither. ³ Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.

³ For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For they have no pain; their bodies are fat and strong. ⁵ They are free from the burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace and violence covers them like a garment. ⁷ Their eyes bulge with fat, their minds pass the limits of conceit.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who do them have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.

³¹ Do not envy the cruel man, and choose none of his ways.

¹⁶ Better is little, with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure with trouble.

¹ Do not envy evil men, nor desire to be with them.

¹⁴ Blessed is the man who always fears; but one who hardens his heart falls into trouble.

⁷ For in many dreams and vanities, there are many words; Therefore fear the One, Elohim."

¹³ Now that all has been heard, here is the final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. ¹⁴ For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

³¹ Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria experienced a time of peace. It grew in strength and numbers, living in the fear of the Lord and the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.

¹ Since we have these promises, dear friends, let's cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit by becoming mature in our holy fear of God.

¹⁷ Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your lives in reverent fear during your temporary stay on earth.

¹⁸ for the needy shall not always be forgotten; the hope of the poor shall never perish.

³⁷ Observe the blameless, and see the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

¹⁴ Thus know wisdom for the sake of your soul, if you find it, then there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.

²⁰ for there will be no reward to the evil man. The lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.

¹¹ For I know the plans that I have for you,' says the LORD, 'plans for your welfare, and not for calamity, to give you hope and a future.

²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

²¹ What fruit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? The outcome of those things is death. ²² But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life.

²⁰ I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have complete boldness, so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

³⁵ So do not throw away your confidence; it holds a great reward.

¹⁰ Listen, my son, and receive my sayings. The years of your life will be many. ¹¹ I have directed you in the way of wisdom, and I have led you along straight paths. ¹² When you go, your steps will not be hampered. When you run, you will not stumble. ¹³ Hold on to instruction, do not let it go! Guard wisdom, because she is your life! ¹⁴ Do not enter into the path of the wicked. Do not walk in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it; do not pass by it; turn from it, and pass on! ¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall. ¹⁷ They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. ¹⁸ The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn that grows brighter until the full light of day. ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is like darkness. They do not know what makes them stumble. ²⁰ My son, pay attention to my words, and listen closely to what I say. ²¹ Do not let them out of your sight; keep them within your heart. ²² For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. ²³ Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

⁶ Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding."

¹² Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

²⁶ My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.

¹ Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

²⁹ Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? ³⁰ To those who linger over wine, to those who come to try mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ³² In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. ³⁴ Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging: ³⁵ "They struck me," you will say, "but I never felt it. They beat me, but I never knew it When will I wake up? I want another drink."

⁷ Whoever keeps the law is a wise son, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.

⁶ Give strong drink to the perishing, And wine to the bitter in soul, ⁷ let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

¹¹ Woe to those who rise early in the morning to go after fermented drink, tarrying in the twilight while wine inflames them!

²² Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine, and champions at mixing strong drink;

¹³ and behold joy and rejoicing, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: -- Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die.

⁴⁹ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards,

¹³ After a few days, the younger son got everything together and journeyed to a distant country, where he squandered his wealth in wild living.

¹⁹ "There was once a rich man, who used to dress in purple and fine linen, and to live in luxury every day.

¹³ Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

¹⁸ Do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

³ For you have spent enough time in the past doing what the Gentiles like to do, living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry. ⁴ They think it strange that you do not run with them into the same excess of dissipation, and they speak evil of you:

²⁰ "They shall say to the elders of his city: This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious! He will not obey us! He is a glutton and a drunkard.

⁹ How long will you lie down, lazy man? When will you get up from your sleep? ¹⁰ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest! ¹¹ and your poverty will come on you like a bandit and your desperation like an armed man.

¹⁵ Laziness puts one to sleep, and an idle person will go hungry.

¹⁷ He who loves pleasure will be a poor man. He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.

³⁰ I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding: ³¹ Look, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I myself set my heart on what I was perceiving; I took admonition from what I saw: ³³ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest: ³⁴ So loss will come on you like an outlaw, and your need like an armed man.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine! ² See, the Lord has a strong and cruel one; like a rain of ice, a storm of destruction, like the overflowing of a strong river, he will violently overcome them. ³ The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trampled under foot;

⁵ Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

¹¹ But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ and envy; drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

³ Each of you must revere your mother and your father, and you must keep my Sabbaths; I am the LORD your God.

¹⁸ "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not listen or obey his father or his mother when they chastise him, ¹⁹ then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city and to the gate of his place. ²⁰ "They shall say to the elders of his city: This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious! He will not obey us! He is a glutton and a drunkard. ²¹ All the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall remove the evil from among you. All Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹⁶ Cursed is he who dishonors his father or his mother! And all the people shall say, Amen!

⁸ My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching:

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and do not forsake your mother's teaching.

¹¹ There is a generation that curse their father, and do not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks his father, and rejects obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley pick it out, and the young eagles eat it.

⁴ For God said: ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ ⁵ But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might have received from me is a gift to God' ⁶ he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, ‘Honor your Father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever curses his father or mother must be put to death.’

²⁶ When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” ²⁷ Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ² "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with a promise:

¹² "Where can wisdom be found? Where is understanding's home? ¹³ Man does not know the price of it; nor is it found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ The deep says, It is not in me; and the sea says, It is not with me. ¹⁵ It can’t be gotten for gold, neither will silver be weighed for its price. ¹⁶ "It cannot be bought with the gold from Ophir or with precious onyx or sapphire. ¹⁷ "Neither gold nor crystal can equal its value. Nor can it be exchanged for jewelry of fine gold. ¹⁸ Corals and pearl are not remembered, The acquisition of wisdom is above rubies. ¹⁹ The topaz of Cush cannot be compared with it; it cannot be bought for pure gold.

⁷² The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver.

¹²⁷ Therefore I love your commandments more than gold, yes, more than pure gold.

² so as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ if, indeed, you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, ⁴ If you seek it as for silver And search for it as for buried treasures,

⁵ Get wisdom. Get understanding. Do not forget, neither swerve from the words of my mouth. ⁶ "Do not abandon her, and she will protect you. Love her, and she will watch over you. ⁷ Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

¹⁶ How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding instead of silver!

¹⁶ Is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom? He has no sense!

¹⁵ The heart of the discerning gets knowledge; the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

¹ Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the water. You, who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

⁴⁴ The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and in his joy he went and sold all he had and bought that field.

⁴⁶ When he found one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

²⁶ What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

²³ I only know that in town after town the Holy Spirit warns me that chains and afflictions await me.

⁷ But whatever was gain to me, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. ⁸ More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

²⁶ He thought that being insulted for the sake of the Messiah was of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.

¹⁸ I advise you to buy of me gold that has been refined in the fire, so that you may become rich, and white clothes to put on, to hide your shameful nakedness, and salve to put on your eyes, to make you see.

¹¹ They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives even to the death.

⁴⁸ And he said: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who hath given this day one to sit on my throne, my eyes seeing it.

²⁰ Yes, brother, let me have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.

⁹ Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez. She said: I gave birth to him in pain. ¹⁰ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel: Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain. And God granted his request.

² Blessed are those who keep his statutes, who seek him with their whole heart.

⁹ BET How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. ¹⁰ I have sought you with all of my heart; do not let me drift away from your commands. ¹¹ I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

¹ My son, do not forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments:

⁴ Father taught me. He said: »Remember my words in your heart. Obey my commandments and live.

²³ Above all else, guard thy heart; for out of it flows the issues of life.

⁹ Who is wise that he can understand these things? Who is discerning that he knows them? The ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous walk in them; but transgressors stumble in them.

Now please tell me how you can be tied. ¹¹ He told her, "If I'm tied up securely with new ropes that have never been used, then I'll become weak and just like any other human being." ¹² And Delilah took new ropes, and bound him with them, and the men lying in wait came out of the chamber, and she said, The Philistines are upon you, Sampson. And he broke them off his arms like a thread. ¹³ Delilah said to Samson, Until now you have fooled me and told me lies. Tell me how you can be tied. He said to her, If you weave the seven braids of my hair into the fabric on the loom, I will become as weak as other men. ¹⁴ And she fastened it with a pin, and said to him, Samson, the Philistines are upon you! And he awoke out of his sleep and pulled out the pin, the hand-loom, and the web. ¹⁵ And Delilah said to Sampson, How can you say I love you, when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have deceived me, and have not told me where your great strength lies. ¹⁶ When she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, he became tired to death. ¹⁷ So he told her everything, and said to her, No razor has ever come on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me and I will become weak like any other man. ¹⁸ When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent for the lords of the Philistines saying, Come up once more, for he has told me everything. Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money with them. ¹⁹ She made him sleep on her knees, and then she called for a man who shaved off the seven braids of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. ²⁰ And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And he woke up from his sleep and said, "I will go out just like every other time and shake myself free," but he did not know that the LORD had left him. ²¹ And the Philistines seized him, gouged his eyes, and brought him to Gaza. They tied him up with bronze shackles, and he became a grinder in the prison. ²² But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved off.

¹⁶ delivering you from the adulteress, from the immoral woman with her seductive words, ¹⁷ who forsakes the prince of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God. ¹⁸ For her house leads down to death, and her paths down to the realm of the dead. ¹⁹ None who go to her return, nor do they reach the paths of life.

¹² Now in the street, now in the square, at every corner she lies in wait.

²² He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose. ²³ until an arrow pierces his entrails, like a bird rushing into a snare, but he does not know that it will cost him his life. ²⁴ Now therefore, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to the words of my mouth. ²⁵ Do not let your heart turn to her ways. Do not go astray in her paths, ²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, all her slain are a mighty host ²⁷ Her house is the way to the grave, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he doesn't know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

¹¹ Prostitution and wine and new wine take away the understanding.

⁸ We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.

¹ Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls came and told me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. ² With whom the kings of the earth have committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her adultery.

¹² "His eyes are darker than wine. His teeth are whiter than milk.

³⁶ When Abigail came to Nabal, he was holding a banquet in his home. It was like a king's banquet. King Ben-hadad of Aram escaped on horseback with the help of his cavalry. ²¹ And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and inflicted on the Syrians a great defeat. ²² And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said to him, Go, strengthen yourself, and mark, and see what you do: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.

²¹ for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

⁷ These also stagger from wine and reel from beer. Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine. They reel from beer. They stagger when seeing visions. They stumble when rendering decisions. ⁸ The tables are covered with vomit and there is no spot without filth.

¹⁰ Entangled like thorns and drunken from drink, they are consumed like dry stubble.

⁴⁹ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, ⁵⁰ the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of,

⁴⁵ But should that servant say to himself 'My master is a long time coming,' and begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, ⁴⁶ the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour he is not aware of, and he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

²¹ He drank some of its wine. He became drunk and lay undressed inside his tent.

⁸ For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, full of foaming wine mixed with spices. He pours it out. Indeed the wicked of the earth drink and drink it to its very dregs.

² She has prepared her meat. She has mixed her wine. She has also set her table.

⁶ who drink bowls of wine, and they anoint with the best of oils; but they are not grieved for the breaking of Joseph!

² At evening, David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at.

¹ »Listen to my words Job. Pay attention to everything I say.

³⁷ Turn my eyes away from looking at worthless things. Revive me in your ways.

²⁵ Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.

²⁸ But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. ²⁹ If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. ⁴⁷ And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

⁵ And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I stretch out my hand over Egypt and bring the Israelites out from their midst." ⁶ Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them.

¹² So each one threw down his staff and it became a serpent, but Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.

¹⁶ "He will suck the poison of serpents. The fangs of an adder (cobra) will kill him.

¹¹ and you groan at your end, when your flesh and body are consumed,

⁸ He who digs a pit may fall into it; and whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.

³ The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trampled under foot;

⁵ They hatch viper eggs and weave spider webs. Those who eat their eggs will die. When an egg is crushed, a poisonous snake is hatched.

³¹ "The prophets prophesy falsely, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?

¹⁷ Look, I'll send snakes among you, vipers that cannot be charmed, and they'll bite you,"

¹⁹ It will be as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him; or he went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall and a snake bit him.
