⁴ "Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Return from your evil ways and your evil deeds!" ' But they did not hear and they did not pay attention to me," declares the LORD.

¹⁹ Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again to Yahweh, and they testified against them; but they would not listen. ²⁰ The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “God says, 'Why do you disobey the LORD's commandments, so that you can't prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.'” ²¹ But the people conspired against him, and at the direct orders of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD's temple. ²² So King Joash did not remember the loyal love that Jehoiada had shown to him, and he killed his son. And as he was dying he said, "May the LORD see and avenge!"

⁶ "Our ancestors were unfaithful and did what the LORD our God considered evil. They deserted him. They turned away from the LORD's tent and turned their backs on him. ⁷ They also shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps. And they did not burn incense or offer burnt offerings in the sanctuary to the God of Israel. ⁸ That's why the LORD was angry with Judah and Jerusalem and made them an object of terror, horror, and derision, as you've seen with your own eyes. ⁹ For, see, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this. ¹⁰ Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, that his fierce anger may turn away from us.

⁷ Do not be like your fathers and your brothers, who were sinners against the Lord, the God of their fathers, so that he made them a cause of fear, as you see.

²¹ Go inquire of the LORD for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found. Great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do according to all that is written in this book.

¹⁵ The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

⁷ "From the days of our fathers till this day we have been great sinners. Because of our sins, the kings of the lands captured us. We were given to the sword and to prison and to loss of goods and to shame of face, as it is this day.

¹⁶ "But they our ancestors became arrogant and stubborn, refusing to listen to your commands.

²⁶ "Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, and cast your law behind their back, and killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies.

³⁰ You were patient with them for many years, warning them by your Spirit through your prophets. But they would not listen, so you turned them over to the control of people in other lands.

⁸ They should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not prepare its heart and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

⁶ We have sinned with our fathers; we have done amiss, and dealt wickedly. ⁷ Our fathers in Egypt did not understand your wonders. They did not remember your abundant kindnesses. But they rebelled by the Red Sea.

¹⁶ "Wash yourselves! Become clean! Get your evil deeds out of my sight. Stop doing evil. ¹⁷ Learn to do well—Seek justice, Correct the oppressor,—Vindicate the fatherless, Plead the cause of the widow, ¹⁸ "Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD: "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ¹⁹ "If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land.

⁹ These people are rebellious and deceitful children. They refuse to listen to the LORD's Law. ¹⁰ That say to the seers: 'See not,' and to the prophets: 'Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy delusions; ¹¹ Remove from the way, turn aside from the path, cause to cease from before us the Holy One of Israel.

⁶ Return as you had deeply revolted, O children of Israel.

¹² Go, proclaim these words to the north, and say, 'Return, unfaithful Israel,' declares the LORD. 'I won't look on you in anger, for I am gracious,' declares the LORD. 'I won't remain angry forever.

¹⁶ This is what the LORD says: "Stand beside the roads and watch. Ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is. Walk in it and find rest for yourselves. But they said, 'We won't walk in it!' ¹⁷ "'I set watchmen over you. I said: 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said: 'We will not listen!'"

³ So says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will let you dwell in this place. ⁴ "'"Do not trust in deceptive words. They say: 'This is the Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD, and the Temple of the LORD. ⁵ For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your pursuits, and actually execute judgment between man and man: ⁶ if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your own hurt: ⁷ then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your ancestors forever and ever.

⁶ The LORD said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. You shall say, 'Listen to the words of this covenant and do them. ⁷ For I solemnly warned your fathers in the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, to this day rising early and warning, saying, Obey My voice. ⁸ Yet they did not obey, nor turn their ear, but walked everyone in the stubbornness of their evil heart: therefore I brought on them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not do them.'"

⁹ "This is what the LORD says: 'In the same way I'll ruin the pride of Judah and the pride of Jerusalem. ¹⁰ This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and go after other gods, to serve them and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle which is good for nothing.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the mountains at twilight. You hope for light, but he turns it into deep darkness. He changes it into heavy gloom. ¹⁷ If you don't listen, I'll cry secretly because of your pride. My eyes will cry bitterly, flowing tears, because the LORD's flock has been taken captive. ¹⁸ "Say to the king and to the queen mother, 'Take a lowly seat, for your glorious crowns have come down from your heads.

¹⁹ the LORD said to me: "Go and stand in the public gate, through which the kings of Judah come in and go out, as well as in all the gates of Jerusalem. ²⁰ and say unto them, 'Hear the word of the LORD, ye kings of Judah, and all thou people of Judah, and all ye citizens of Jerusalem, that go through this gate! ²¹ This is what the LORD says: "Be careful! On the Sabbath day, don't carry any load or bring anything through the gates of Jerusalem. ²² "You shall not bring a load out of your houses on the Sabbath day nor do any work. You should keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your forefathers. ²³ But they didn't listen, nor did they pay attention. They were determined not to listen and not to accept instruction.

¹¹ "Now say to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem, This is what the LORD says: 'I am going to prepare a disaster and make a plot against you. Turn from your evil ways, change your lives, and do good.'

³ "From the thirteenth year of the reign of Ammon's son Josiah, the king of Judah, until the present time, for 23 years the word of the LORD has come to me, and I've spoken to you again and again, but you haven't listened. ⁴ "the LORD has sent all his servants the prophets to you. Yet, you have not listened or paid attention to them." ⁵ Turn, everyone of you, from his evil way, and from your evil practices, and you shall dwell in the land which I gave to you and your fathers, forever and ever. ⁶ "Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them. Do not make me furious about the idols your hands have shaped. Then I will not harm you." ⁷ "'You have not listened to me,' declares the LORD. 'You have made me furious about the idols your hands have shaped. You have brought harm upon yourselves.'

⁵ to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I have sent to you, over and over again, though you have not listened,

¹⁵ I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending, saying, Each man now return from his evil way, and amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and you shall live in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers. But you have not bowed your ear, nor listened to Me.

² "Take a scroll, and write on it everything that I have dictated to you about Israel, Judah, and all the other nations from the time I spoke to you during the reign of Josiah until today. ³ "Maybe the nation of Judah will hear about all the disasters that I devise to bring on them, and they will turn from their wicked ways. Then I will forgive their wickedness and their sins." ⁴ Then Jeremiah called Baruch, son of Neriah. Jeremiah dictated everything that the LORD told him. Baruch wrote it all down on a scroll. ⁵ Jeremiah told Baruch: "I am no longer allowed to go to the LORD's Temple. ⁶ You go and read the words of the LORD that you wrote at my dictation from the scroll. Read them to the people at the LORD's temple on the fast day. Also read them to all the people of Judah who are coming from their towns. ⁷ Perhaps their plea will fall before the LORD and each one will turn away from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the LORD pronounced against this people." ⁸ And Baruch, the son of Neriah, did as Jeremiah the prophet gave him orders to do, reading from the book the words of the Lord in the Lord's house. ⁹ In the ninth month of the fifth year of the reign of Joshiah's son Jehoiakim, king of Judah, a fast was proclaimed before the LORD in Jerusalem for all the people of Jerusalem, as well as all the people who were coming from the towns of Judah. ¹⁰ Then Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the book in the LORD's house, in the room of Gemariah the son of Shaphan, the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD's house, in the ears of all the people.

²³ As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a scribe's knife and throw them into the fire in the fireplace. He did this until the whole scroll was burned up. ²⁴ Yet the king and all his servants who heard these words were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments.

⁴ "'I kept sending you my servants the prophets, who told you not to do this terrible thing that I hate. ⁵ But they did not listen, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods.

¹⁶ "We refuse to listen to what you have told us in the name of the LORD.

⁷ But the house of Israel is not willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to Me, for all the house of Israel are strong of forehead and hard of heart. ⁸ "Yet, I will make you as stubborn and as hardheaded as they are. ⁹ I have made your forehead as a diamond, harder than flint. Don’t be afraid of them, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.”

¹⁴ '"Now suppose this son has a son. The son sees all the sins that his father does. He is afraid, so he does not do such things. ¹⁵ -- he hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; he hath not defiled his neighbour`s wife, ¹⁶ And he oppresses no one; he requires no pledge for a loan, and he does not commit robbery; he gives his bread to the hungry, and he covers the naked person with a garment. ¹⁷ '"He keeps his hand from the poor and does not take interest or increase, but executes my ordinances, and walks in my statutes. He will not die for his father's iniquity. He will surely live.

³⁰ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, says the Sovereign LORD. Return and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away from you all your sins by which you have sinned; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will you die, O house of Israel? ³² For I have no pleasure in the death of the dying," declares the Sovereign LORD. "And so repent and live!"

¹¹ Say to them: '"As I am alive!" Declares the Sovereign LORD. "I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked. Only that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back! Turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?"'

¹ "Return, Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have fallen due to your own iniquity.

¹³ therefore the prudent person remains silent at such a time, for the time is evil. ¹⁴ Seek good and not evil that you may live, and so the Lord God Almighty will be with you. As you have said, ¹⁵ Hate evil and love good and establish justice in the gate; perhaps the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

²⁴ But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

⁶ "Do not prophesy." They prophesy. "Do not prophesy about these things. Disgrace won't overtake us."

³ Therefore tell them: Thus says the LORD of hosts: 'Return to me,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and I will return to you,' says the LORD of hosts.

¹¹ But they refused to pay attention, turned their backs, and stopped listening. ¹² "They made their hearts hard like flint and would not listen to the law, and the words that the LORD Almighty sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Great anger came from the LORD Almighty!" ¹³ "'I cried, and they would not listen. Now they will cry, and I will not listen,' said the LORD Almighty!

⁸ Produce fruit worthy of repentance. ⁹ And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ¹⁰ The ax lies ready at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

¹⁹ Repent therefore, and turn again, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

⁵¹ You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did. ⁵² Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers—

²⁰ but to those in Damascus first, and in Jerusalem and all the region of Judea and to the Gentiles, I proclaimed that they should repent and turn to God, doing deeds worthy of repentance.

¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men, ¹⁶ By hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved, thus always filling up their sins to the limit: but wrath has come upon them at last.

¹⁸ For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers,
