²⁵ On the third day, when they were sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.

³³ She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, “Because Yahweh has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this son also.” She named him Simeon. ³⁴ She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “Now this time my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.

⁵ “Simeon and Levi are brothers. Their swords are weapons of violence. ⁶ My soul, don’t come into their council. My glory, don’t be united to their assembly; for in their anger they killed men. In their self-will they hamstrung cattle. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

⁷ They fought against Midian, as Yahweh commanded Moses. They killed every male.

¹⁷ Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him.

⁶ For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁸ When they were done circumcising the whole nation, they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed.

²⁵ But Hezekiah didn’t reciprocate appropriate to the benefit done for him, because his heart was lifted up. Therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem.

¹⁶ For they don’t sleep unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall.

³⁴ For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He won’t regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.
