²⁰ For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed.

⁸ The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Yahweh, Micaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him, for he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.” Jehoshaphat said, “Don’t let the king say so.”

¹³ “These are of those who rebel against the light. They don’t know its ways, nor stay in its paths. ¹⁴ The murderer rises with the light. He kills the poor and needy. In the night he is like a thief. ¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No eye will see me.’ He disguises his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses. They shut themselves up in the daytime. They don’t know the light. ¹⁷ For the morning is to all of them like thick darkness, for they know the terrors of the thick darkness.

¹⁷ since you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?

²⁹ because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.

¹⁸ But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light that shines more and more until the perfect day.

¹² and say, “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

¹² A scoffer doesn’t love to be reproved; he will not go to the wise.

¹⁰ They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly. ¹¹ Therefore, because you trample on the poor, and take taxes from him of wheat: You have built houses of cut stone, but you will not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

⁴⁵ One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying this you insult us also.”

⁷ The world can’t hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

¹¹ Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. ¹² For it is a shame even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. ¹³ But all things, when they are reproved, are revealed by the light, for everything that reveals is light.

²³ For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; ²⁴ for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. ²⁵ But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.
