¹ For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. Hear my voice, God, in my complaint. Preserve my life from fear of the enemy. ² Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the noisy crowd of the ones doing evil; ³ who sharpen their tongue like a sword, and aim their arrows, deadly words, ⁴ to shoot innocent men from ambushes. They shoot at him suddenly and fearlessly. ⁵ They encourage themselves in evil plans. They talk about laying snares secretly. They say, “Who will see them?” ⁶ They plot injustice, saying, “We have made a perfect plan!” Surely man’s mind and heart are cunning. ⁷ But God will shoot at them. They will be suddenly struck down with an arrow. ⁸ Their own tongues shall ruin them. All who see them will shake their heads. ⁹ All mankind shall be afraid. They shall declare the work of God, and shall wisely ponder what he has done. ¹⁰ The righteous shall be glad in Yahweh, and shall take refuge in him. All the upright in heart shall praise him!

⁸ Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings, ⁹ from the wicked who oppress me, my deadly enemies, who surround me.

⁷ Hear, Yahweh, when I cry with my voice. Have mercy also on me, and answer me.

¹³ For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side, while they conspire together against me, they plot to take away my life. ¹⁴ But I trust in you, Yahweh. I said, “You are my God.” ¹⁵ My times are in your hand. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.

⁴ I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.

² My enemies want to swallow me up all day long, for they are many who fight proudly against me. ³ When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. ⁴ In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

¹ A Psalm by David. Yahweh, I have called on you. Come to me quickly! Listen to my voice when I call to you.

¹ A Psalm by David. Hear my prayer, Yahweh. Listen to my petitions. In your faithfulness and righteousness, relieve me. ² Don’t enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous. ³ For the enemy pursues my soul. He has struck my life down to the ground. He has made me live in dark places, as those who have been long dead.

⁵⁵ I called on your name, Yahweh, out of the lowest dungeon. ⁵⁶ You heard my voice: “Don’t hide your ear from my sighing, and my cry.”

⁹ The Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, “Don’t be afraid, but speak and don’t be silent; ¹⁰ for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city.”

²⁴ saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’

⁶ Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?

²² Please go make yet more sure, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who has seen him there; for I have been told that he is very cunning. ²³ See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hides himself, and come again to me with certainty, and I will go with you. It shall happen, if he is in the land, that I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.”

² I will come on him while he is weary and exhausted, and will make him afraid. All the people who are with him will flee. I will strike the king only, ³ and I will bring back all the people to you. The man whom you seek is as if all returned. All the people shall be in peace.” ⁴ The saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

² The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,

¹ A Psalm by David, when he fled from Absalom his son. Yahweh, how my adversaries have increased! Many are those who rise up against me.

⁵ For in the day of trouble, he will keep me secretly in his pavilion. In the secret place of his tabernacle, he will hide me. He will lift me up on a rock.

²⁰ In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man. You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues.

⁶ They conspire and lurk, watching my steps. They are eager to take my life.

² Deliver me from the workers of iniquity. Save me from the bloodthirsty men.

² for they have opened the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit against me. They have spoken to me with a lying tongue. ³ They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause.

⁹ Deliver me, Yahweh, from my enemies. I flee to you to hide me.

² A man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the storm, as streams of water in a dry place, as the shade of a large rock in a weary land.

¹⁹ But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter. I didn’t know that they had devised plans against me, saying, “Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit, and let’s cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.”

²³ Yet, Yahweh, you know all their counsel against me to kill me. Don’t forgive their iniquity. Don’t blot out their sin from your sight, Let them be overthrown before you. Deal with them in the time of your anger.

³ Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. ⁴ They took counsel together that they might take Jesus by deceit, and kill him.

¹⁸ But they all cried out together, saying, “Away with this man! Release to us Barabbas!”— ¹⁹ one who was thrown into prison for a certain revolt in the city, and for murder. ²⁰ Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Jesus, ²¹ but they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify him!” ²² He said to them the third time, “Why? What evil has this man done? I have found no capital crime in him. I will therefore chastise him and release him.” ²³ But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. Their voices and the voices of the chief priests prevailed.

¹⁴ They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. ¹⁵ Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”

³ asking a favor against him, that he would summon him to Jerusalem; plotting to kill him on the way.

² For, behold, the wicked bend their bows. They set their arrows on the strings, that they may shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.

⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁷ Let them vanish like water that flows away. When they draw the bow, let their arrows be made blunt.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.

¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, and their jaws like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of Yahweh’s servants, and their righteousness is of me,” says Yahweh.

³ “They bend their tongue, as their bow, for falsehood. They have grown strong in the land, but not for truth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they don’t know me,” says Yahweh.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. ⁷ For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and sea creature, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind; ⁸ but nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

¹¹ and Saul threw the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” David escaped from his presence twice.

¹⁰ Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear; but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, and he stuck the spear into the wall. David fled, and escaped that night.

¹⁴ David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise! Let’s flee; or else none of us will escape from Absalom. Hurry to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

¹¹ Our adversaries said, “They will not know or see, until we come in among them and kill them, and cause the work to cease.”

⁸ He lies in wait near the villages. From ambushes, he murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the helpless. ⁹ He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless when he draws him in his net.

¹⁹ God, who is enthroned forever, will hear and answer them. Selah. They never change and don’t fear God.

³ For, behold, they lie in wait for my soul. The mighty gather themselves together against me, not for my disobedience, nor for my sin, Yahweh. ⁴ I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Rise up, behold, and help me!

⁷ But God will shoot at them. They will be suddenly struck down with an arrow.

¹⁴ You pierced the heads of his warriors with their own spears. They came as a whirlwind to scatter me, gloating as if to devour the wretched in secret.

⁶ When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him.”

²² who didn’t sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.” ²³ When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.

⁹ The enemy said, ‘I will pursue. I will overtake. I will divide the plunder. My desire will be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword. My hand will destroy them.’

⁶ Please come now therefore, and curse this people for me; for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself with us in the strongholds in the woods, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desert? ²⁰ Now therefore, O king, come down. According to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part will be to deliver him up into the king’s hand.” ²¹ Saul said, “You are blessed by Yahweh; for you have had compassion on me.

¹³ You say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?

¹¹ He says in his heart, “God has forgotten. He hides his face. He will never see it.”

⁷ Behold, they spew with their mouth. Swords are in their lips, “For”, they say, “who hears us?”

⁷ They say, “Yah will not see, neither will Jacob’s God consider.”

⁷ Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

⁵ The proud have hidden a snare for me, they have spread the cords of a net by the path. They have set traps for me. Selah.

¹¹ If they say, “Come with us. Let’s lay in wait for blood. Let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause. ¹² Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit. ¹³ We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder. ¹⁴ You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.”

⁶ Everyone helps his neighbor. They say to their brothers, “Be strong!”

¹² Then he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in his rooms of imagery? For they say, ‘Yahweh doesn’t see us. Yahweh has forsaken the land.’”

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.

¹⁰ Those who dwell on the earth rejoice over them, and they will be glad. They will give gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

⁹ Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

⁹ David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to men’s words, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks to harm you?’

¹⁰ Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, “Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants who break away from their masters these days.

⁹ For there is no faithfulness in their mouth. Their heart is destruction. Their throat is an open tomb. They flatter with their tongue.

¹¹ Unrighteous witnesses rise up. They ask me about things that I don’t know about.

¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.

⁵ Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

¹⁵ Woe to those who deeply hide their counsel from Yahweh, and whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us?” and “Who knows us?”

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it? ¹⁰ “I, Yahweh, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.”

⁴ Then the presidents and the local governors sought to find occasion against Daniel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion or fault, because he was faithful. There wasn’t any error or fault found in him. ⁵ Then these men said, “We won’t find any occasion against this Daniel, unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.”

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, the elders, and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death;

²⁹ Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” ³⁰ They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”

⁷ The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each man will get his praise from God.

²³ “I will heap evils on them. I will spend my arrows on them.

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood. My sword shall devour flesh with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemy.”

³⁴ A certain man drew his bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of the armor. Therefore he said to the driver of his chariot, “Turn your hand, and carry me out of the battle; for I am severely wounded.”

³ The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was distressed by reason of the archers. ⁴ Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me.” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it. ⁵ When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died. ⁶ So Saul died with his three sons; and all his house died together. ⁷ When all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

¹² If a man doesn’t repent, he will sharpen his sword; he has bent and strung his bow. ¹³ He has also prepared for himself the instruments of death. He makes ready his flaming arrows.

¹⁴ He sent out his arrows, and scattered them. He routed them with great lightning bolts.

⁴ to shoot innocent men from ambushes. They shoot at him suddenly and fearlessly.

¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.

¹⁵ Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.

¹ He who is often rebuked and stiffens his neck will be destroyed suddenly, with no remedy.

¹³ therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant.

¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my kidneys.

⁴⁰ Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left.

⁵⁰ the lord of that servant will come in a day when he doesn’t expect it, and in an hour when he doesn’t know it, ⁵¹ and will cut him in pieces, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.

² For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. ³ For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape.

³⁴ All Israel that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”

³ The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers. ⁴ Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me!” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it. ⁵ When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, that same day together. ⁷ When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.

⁶ Your own mouth condemns you, and not I. Yes, your own lips testify against you.

³ When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish in your presence.

⁷ All those who see me mock me. They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying,

¹¹ Because of all my adversaries I have become utterly contemptible to my neighbors, a horror to my acquaintances. Those who saw me on the street fled from me.

⁶ The righteous also will see it, and fear, and laugh at him, saying,

¹² For the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride, for the curses and lies which they utter.

⁹ As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

¹³ An evil man is trapped by sinfulness of lips, but the righteous shall come out of trouble.

⁷ A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

¹⁶ to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished, and shake his head.

²⁷ For wasn’t Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For as often as you speak of him, you shake your head.

⁷ It will happen that all those who look at you will flee from you, and say, ‘Nineveh is laid waste! Who will mourn for her?’ Where will I seek comforters for you?”

⁴¹ They told him, “He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will lease out the vineyard to other farmers, who will give him the fruit in its season.”

²² “He said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant! You knew that I am an exacting man, taking up that which I didn’t lay down, and reaping that which I didn’t sow.

⁴ I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “Come out of her, my people, that you have no participation in her sins, and that you don’t receive of her plagues,

¹⁰ standing far away for the fear of her torment, saying, ‘Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For your judgment has come in one hour.’

³ He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in Yahweh.

⁵ There they were in great fear, where no fear was, for God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you. You have put them to shame, because God has rejected them.

¹¹ so that men shall say, “Most certainly there is a reward for the righteous. Most certainly there is a God who judges the earth.”

⁴² The upright will see it, and be glad. All the wicked will shut their mouths. ⁴³ Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things. They will consider the loving kindnesses of Yahweh.

²⁰ My soul is consumed with longing for your ordinances at all times.

¹² The harp, lyre, tambourine, and flute, with wine, are at their feasts; but they don’t respect the work of Yahweh, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

²⁸ Listen to those who flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Yahweh our God, the vengeance of his temple.

¹⁰ ‘Yahweh has produced our righteousness: come, and let’s declare in Zion the work of Yahweh our God.’

²³ They will comfort you, when you see their way and their doings; then you will know that I have not done all that I have done in it without cause,” says the Lord Yahweh.

⁹ Who is wise, that he may understand these things? Who is prudent, that he may know them? For the ways of Yahweh are right, and the righteous walk in them; But the rebellious stumble in them.

¹³ In that day there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad. The innocent ridicule them,

¹ For the Chief Musician. By David. In Yahweh, I take refuge. How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”?

²⁰ Oh keep my soul, and deliver me. Let me not be disappointed, for I take refuge in you.

¹¹ Be glad in Yahweh, and rejoice, you righteous! Shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart!

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance. He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,

² As smoke is driven away, so drive them away. As wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. ³ But let the righteous be glad. Let them rejoice before God. Yes, let them rejoice with gladness.

¹¹ Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

² His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed.

³⁰ Because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: ³¹ that, as it is written, “He who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.”

¹⁴ But far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!”
