⁵ “Rather, they do all their works in order to be seen by people. They make their phylacteries broad and the tassels on their garments large;

¹ “Be careful not to do your charitable giving before the people so as to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in the heavens. ² Therefore, whenever you do charitable giving do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by the people. Assuredly I say to you, they already have their reward. ³ But when you do charitable giving do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴ so that your charitable giving may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself repay you openly. ⁵ And whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that they may be seen by the people. Assuredly I say to you that they already have their reward. ⁶ But you, whenever you pray, go into your room, and having shut the door pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will repay you openly. ⁷ “But when you pray do not babble like the heathen; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. ⁸ So do not be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. ⁹ Therefore, you pray like this: ‘Our Father who is in the heavens, let Your name be reverenced; ¹⁰ let Your kingdom come, let Your will be done, on the earth just as in heaven. ¹¹ Give us today our daily bread; ¹² and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. ¹³ And do not bring us into testing, but rescue us from the evil one; because Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’ ¹⁴ For if you forgive people their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ But if you do not forgive people their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. ¹⁶ “Also, whenever you fast do not become gloomy like the hypocrites, because they disfigure their faces so that people will notice that they are fasting. Assuredly I say to you that they already have their reward.

²⁰ And then—a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment.

¹⁵ So He said to them: “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. That which is exalted among men is an abomination before God.

⁴⁷ who ‘devour’ widows’ houses, and for a show make long prayers. These will receive more severe judgment.”

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from men and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

¹⁸ Someone who speaks on his own is seeking his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

⁴³ for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

¹⁵ To be sure, some are even preaching Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will;

³ Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard one another as being better than yourselves. ⁴ who opposes and exalts himself over everything that is called a god or an object of worship, to the point of taking his seat as God in God’s sanctuary, proclaiming himself to be God.
