⁹ And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren who came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so will I keep myself.

¹⁵ But the former governors, that had been before me were chargeable to the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; yes, even their servants bore rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

³ And because he was of the same occupation, he abode with them, and wrought (for by their occupation they were tent-makers)

³³ I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel.

⁴ But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,

¹ Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; ² That in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy, and their deep poverty, abounded to the riches of their liberality.

¹² For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings to God;

¹³ For what is that in which ye were inferior to other churches, except that I myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong. ¹⁴ Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. ¹⁵ And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved. ¹⁶ But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.

²⁵ Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labor, and fellow-soldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.

¹⁰ But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. ¹¹ Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatever state I am, with that to be content. ¹² I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. ¹³ I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding ye have done well, that ye did communicate with my affliction. ¹⁵ Now, ye Philippians, know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. ¹⁶ For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again to my necessity.

⁶ Nor from men sought we glory, neither from you, nor yet from others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.

⁹ For ye remember, brethren, our labor and toil: for laboring night and day, because we would not be chargeable to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.

⁸ Neither did we eat any man's bread for naught; but wrought with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: ⁹ Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves a pattern to you to follow us.

³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheep-skins, and goat-skins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
