⁶ Can that which is unsavory be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

²⁵ How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should thy falsehoods make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

⁴ But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value. ⁵ O that ye would altogether hold your peace and it would be your wisdom.

² How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words? ³ These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me.

² How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength? ³ How hast thou counseled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou abundantly declared the thing as it is?

⁴⁶ And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man, from that day forth, ask him any more questions.

² Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison of which drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God set themselves in array against me. ⁵ Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?

¹⁴ To him that is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.

³⁹ And they that passed by, reviled him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross.

¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: ¹² For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

⁴ The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth my ear to hear as the learned.

¹³ Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.

²¹ I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

¹⁷ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thy indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

²⁰ My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped with the skin of my teeth.

¹⁵ And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

²⁴ My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness.

¹⁶ Therefore will the Lord, the LORD of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he will kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

²⁷ That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

¹⁶ For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou showest thyself wonderful upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thy indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

²⁴ Why hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thy enemy?

⁴ He teareth himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be removed out of its place?

¹¹ He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me to him as one of his enemies.

¹⁶ With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

¹² The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.

²² Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

¹⁶ All thy enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

⁵ If thou wouldst seek to God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty; ⁶ If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

¹⁴ If iniquity is in thy hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.

²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

³⁴ For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me. ²⁸ For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

⁵ Is not thy wickedness great? and thy iniquities infinite? ⁶ For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for naught, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live. ⁷ Let my enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

¹ I Made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? ² For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit; ⁶ Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step hath turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to my hands; ⁸ Then let me sow, and let another eat; yes, let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ If my heart hath been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor's door; ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind to another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is a hainous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. ¹² For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase. ¹³ If I despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten of it; ¹⁸ (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate: ²² Then let my arm fall from my shoulder-blade, and my arm be broken from the bone. ²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; ²⁵ If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much; ²⁶ If I have beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; ²⁷ And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. ²⁹ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or have lifted up myself when evil found him: ³⁰ Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. ³¹ If the men of my tabernacle have not said, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveler. ³³ If I have covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom: ³⁴ Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare to him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near to him. ³⁸ If my land crieth against me, or its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits of it without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life: ⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

³ (7:2)Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. ⁴ (7:3)O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there is iniquity in my hands; ⁵ (7:4)If I have rewarded evil to him that was at peace with me; (yes, I have delivered him that without cause is my enemy:)

¹⁷ (44:16)For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. ¹⁸ (44:17)All this is come upon us; yet we have not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. ¹⁹ (44:18)Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; ²⁰ (44:19)Though thou hast severely broke us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shades of death. ²¹ (44:20)If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: ¹⁹ But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God: yes, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

⁸ I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

¹¹ And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

⁵ And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yes, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

²¹ For behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

⁹ Then shalt thou call, and the LORD will answer; thou shalt cry, and he will say, Here I am. If thou shalt take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; ¹⁰ And if thou shalt draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:

²⁹ O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD.

⁷ For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;

³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. ⁴ Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

⁵⁰ If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives besides my daughters; no man is with us; See, God is witness betwixt me and thee.

⁵ And he said to them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

² Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh peace in his high places.

⁵ Who is like to the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high.

⁹ For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers,

¹ I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me testimony in the Holy Spirit,

²³ Moreover, I call God for a witness upon my soul, that to spare you I have not as yet come to Corinth.

³¹ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

⁵ For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:

¹⁰ Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily, and justly, and unblamably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:

⁴ I am as one mocked by his neighbor, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is derided. ⁵ He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.

⁴ I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you.

² Are there not mockers with me? and doth not my eye continue in their provocation?

⁴ For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself to prayer.

² (142:1)Maschil of David; a prayer when he was in the cave. I cried to the LORD with my voice; with my voice to the LORD I made my supplication.

⁴ (12:3)He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: ⁵ (12:4)Yes, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication to him: he found him in Beth-el, and there he spoke with us;

¹¹ And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. ¹² And it came to pass in those days, that he went out to a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

⁷ Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears to him that was able to save him from death, and was heard, in that he feared;

³⁴ Let him take away his rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me: ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

²² Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. ⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.

¹ (40:6)Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, ² (40:7)Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou to me. ³ (40:8)Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous? ⁴ (40:9)Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like his? ⁵ (40:10)Deck thyself now with majesty and excellence; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

¹⁰ That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

⁹ Woe to him that contendeth with his Maker! Let the potsherd contend with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

²⁰ No, but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

¹⁰ But man dieth, and wasteth away: yes, man yieldeth his breath, and where is he?

¹⁴ If a man dieth, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change shall come.

⁵ Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
