⁹ But a certain man, named Simon, had been before in the city, using magic, and astonishing the Samaritans, saying, that he was some great one.

¹⁸ And many of those who believed came, confessing and openly declaring their deeds. ¹⁹ Many also of those who had practised curious arts, bringing their books together, burnt them before all men, and they computed the value of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. ²⁰ So powerfully did the word of God grow and prevail.

¹⁸ He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory; but he that seekth the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

³⁶ For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody, to whom was joined a number of men, about four hundred, who was slain, and all who hearkened to him were scattered and came to nothing.

¹¹ They gave heed to him, because he had a long time astonished them with witchcraft.

⁶ And having gone through the whole isle to Paphos, they found a certain magician, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesus.

¹⁶ And as we were going to prayer, a certain damsel, possest by a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by prophesying. ¹⁷ She following after Paul and us, cried out, saying, These men are servants of the most high God, who declare to us the way of salvation. ¹⁸ And this she did for many days. But Paul being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ, to go out of her. And he came out the same hour.

⁴ Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he sitteth in the temple of God as God, declaring himself that he is God.

⁸ Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also withstand the truth: men of corrupt minds, void of judgment as to the faith. ⁹ But they shall proceed no farther; for their folly shall be manifest to all men, as theirs also was.

¹⁸ For by speaking swelling words of vanity, they allure thro' the desire of the flesh, thro' wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them that live in error.

¹³ And he doth great wonders, so that he even maketh fire to come down out of heaven on the earth in the sight of men. ¹⁴ And he deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the wonders which it is given him to do before the wild beast: saying to them that dwell on the earth, to make an image to the wild beast, which had the wound by the sword, and yet lived.

¹⁵ Without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie.
