²⁶ Then what is our conclusion, brothers? When you meet together, everybody has a song, something to teach, a revelation, an ecstatic utterance, or an explanation of one. It must all be for the upbuilding of all.

¹⁹ So let us keep on pursuing the things that make for peace and our mutual upbuilding.

⁷ To each of us is given a special spiritual illumination for the common good. ⁸ To one, wise speech is given by the Spirit; to another, by the same Spirit, intelligent speech is given; ⁹ to another, through union with the same Spirit, faith; to another, by one and the same Spirit, power to cure the sick; ¹⁰ to another, power for working wonders; to another, prophetic insight; to another, the power to discriminate between the true Spirit and false spirits; to another, various ecstatic utterances; and to another, the power to explain them.

⁴ Whoever speaks in ecstasy builds up himself alone, but whoever prophesies builds up the congregation too. ⁵ I would like for all of you to speak in ecstasy, but I would rather that you prophesy. The man who speaks with real prophetic insight renders greater service than the man who speaks in ecstasy, unless the latter explains it, so the congregation may receive an uplift. ⁶ But as it now is, brothers, if I do come back to you speaking in ecstasy, what good shall I do you, unless my speech contains a revelation or new knowledge or a prophetic message or some teaching?

¹² So, as you are ambitious for spiritual gifts, you must keep trying to excel for the upbuilding of the church. ¹³ Therefore, the man who speaks in ecstasy must pray for power to explain what he says.

²⁷ If anybody speaks in ecstasy, there must be only two, or three at most, and let one speak at a time, and someone explain what he says.

⁴⁰ Everything must always be done in a proper and orderly way.

¹⁹ Are you thinking all this time that I am defending myself to you? It is in the very presence of God and as one who is in union with Christ that I am speaking. And it is all for building you up, beloved, for I am apprehensive that, somehow or other, when I come I shall find you not as I want to find you, and that you may find me not as you want to find me.

¹⁰ This is why I am writing this while far away from you, that when I do come, I may not have to deal harshly with you in accordance with the authority which the Lord has given me, for building you up, not for tearing you down.

¹² for the immediate equipment of God's people for the work of service, for the ultimate building up of the body of Christ,

¹⁶ For it is under His direction that the whole body is perfectly adjusted and united by every joint that furnishes its supplies; and by the proper functioning of each particular part there is brought about the growing of the body for its building up in love.

²⁹ You must stop letting any bad word pass your lips, but only words that are good for building up as the occasion demands, so that they will result in spiritual blessing to the hearers.

¹⁹ and always be speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Keep on praying and praising the Lord with all your heart;

¹¹ So continue encouraging one another and helping one another in character building.
