⁷ To say no more, it is a mark of moral failure among you to have lawsuits at all with one another. Why not rather suffer being wronged? Why not suffer being robbed?

³⁹ But I tell you not to resist the one who injures you, but if anyone slaps you on one cheek, turn him the other, too; ⁴⁰ and if anyone wants to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat, too. ⁴¹ And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.

²⁹ To the man who strikes you on one cheek, offer him the other too; and from the man who takes away your coat, do not keep back your shirt either,

¹⁷ Stop returning evil for evil to anyone. Always see to it that your affairs are right in the sight of everybody. ¹⁸ If possible, so far as it depends on you, live in peace with everybody. ¹⁹ Stop taking revenge on one another, beloved, but leave a place for God's anger, for the Scripture says, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will pay them back, says the Lord."

¹⁵ Take care that none of you ever pays back evil for evil, but always keep looking for ways to show kindness to one another and everybody.

¹ What causes wars and quarrels among you? Is it not your different desires which are ever at war within your bodies? You desire things and cannot have them, and so you commit murder. ² You covet things, but cannot acquire them, and so you quarrel and fight. You do not have them, because you do not ask for them. ³ You ask and fail to get them, because you ask with evil, selfish motives, to spend them on your pleasures.

¹⁹ For it is pleasing in the sight of God for one to bear his sorrows though suffering innocently. ²⁰ For what credit is it to bear it patiently, if you do wrong and are beaten for it? But if you do right and patiently suffer for it, it is pleasing in the sight of God. ²¹ Indeed, it was to this kind of living that you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you might follow His footsteps. ²² He never committed a sin, and deceit was never found on His lips. ²³ Although He was abused, He never retorted; although He continued to suffer, He never threatened, but committed His case to Him who judges justly.

⁹ never returning evil for evil or abuse for abuse, but blessing instead, because it was for this that you were called, to obtain the blessing of heirs.
