¹ So, as a joint-elder with them, a witness of the suffering borne by Christ, and a sharer of the glory that is to be uncovered, I beg the elders among you, ² be shepherds of the flock of God that is among you, not as though you had to but of your own free will, not from the motive of personal profit but freely, ³ and not as domineering over those in your charge but proving yourselves models for the flock to imitate; ⁴ and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the glorious crown that never fades. ⁵ You younger men, on your part, must be submissive to the elders. And you must all put on the servant's apron of humility to one another, because God opposes the haughty but bestows His unmerited favor on the humble. ⁶ Therefore humbly submit to God's strong hand, so that at the proper time He may exalt you. ⁷ Cast every worry you have upon Him, because He cares for you. ⁸ Be calm and alert. Your opponent the devil is always prowling about like a roaring lion, trying to devour you. ⁹ Resist him and be strong in faith, because you know that your brotherhood all over the world is experiencing the same sort of sufferings. ¹⁰ And God, the giver of every spiritual blessing, who through your union with Christ has called you to His eternal glory, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself make you perfect, firm, and strong, ¹¹ To Him be dominion forever. Amen. ¹² By Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I regard him, I have written you this short letter, to encourage you and to testify that this is the true, unmerited favor of God. Stand firm in it. ¹³ Your sister-church in Babylon, chosen along with you, and Mark my son, wish to be remembered to you. ¹⁴ Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you that are in union with Christ.

²⁵ So I tell you, stop worrying about your life, as to what you will have to eat or drink, or about your body, as to what you will have to wear. Is not life worth more than food and the body worth more than clothes? ²⁶ Take a good look at the wild birds, for they do not sow or reap, or store up food in barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps on feeding them. Are you not worth more than they?

³³ But as your first duty keep on looking for His standard of doing right, and for His will, and then all these things will be yours besides. ³⁴ So never worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries of its own. Each day has evil enough of its own."

³⁹ The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the close of the age, the reapers are angels.

²⁵ But Jesus called them to Him and said, "You know that the rulers of the heathen lord it over them, and their great men rule as despots over them. ²⁶ It is not to be so among you, but whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant,

⁸ But as for you, you must not seek for others to call you 'Teacher,' for you have but one who is 'Teacher,' and you are all brothers. ⁹ And you must not call anyone on earth 'father,' for the Heavenly One is your Father. ¹⁰ And you must not be called 'leaders,' for you have only one Leader, and that is Christ.

⁴² So keep on watching, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

⁴⁸ But if the slave is bad and says to himself, 'My master is going to be gone a long time,' ⁴⁹ and begins to beat his fellow-slaves, and keeps on eating and drinking with those who get drunk, ⁵⁰ the master of that slave will come on the very day he is not expecting him,

³¹ "When the Son of Man comes in His splendor, and all the angels with Him, He will take His seat on His splendid throne, ³² and all the nations will be gathered before him, and He will separate them from one another, just as a shepherd separates his sheep from his goats, ³³ and He will put the sheep at His right hand and the goats at his left. ³⁴ Then the King will say to those at His right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. ³⁵ For when I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, when I was thirsty you gave me something to drink, when I was a stranger you welcomed me to your homes, ³⁶ when I needed clothes you put them on me, when I was sick you looked after me, when I was in prison you came to see me.' ³⁷ Then the upright will answer, 'Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and give you something to eat, or thirsty, and give you something to drink? ³⁸ When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you to our homes, or needing clothes, and put them on you? ³⁹ When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and come to see you?' ⁴⁰ And the King will answer them, 'I solemnly say to you, every time you did a good deed to one of these most insignificant brothers of mine, you did a good deed to me.' ⁴¹ "Then He will say to those at His left, 'Be gone from me, you who are now cursed, to the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

³⁸ He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. So they woke Him up and said to Him, "Teacher, is it no concern to you that we are going down?"

⁴² Then Jesus called them to Him, and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule the heathen lord it over them, and their great men rule as despots over them; ⁴³ but this is not to be the case among you. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴ and whoever wants to hold the first positions among you must be everybody's slave. ⁴⁵ For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life a ransom price to set many free."

³ Then the devil said to Him, "If you are God's Son, order this stone to turn to a loaf of bread." ⁴ But Jesus answered him, "The Scripture says, 'Not on bread alone does man live.'" ⁵ Then he took Him up and in a second of time he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world. ⁶ And the devil said to Him, "I will give you all this power and all their splendor, for it has been turned over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. ⁷ So if you will worship before me just once, it shall all be yours." ⁸ But Jesus answered him, "The Scripture says, 'You must worship the Lord your God, and serve Him alone.'" ⁹ Then he took Him to Jerusalem, and had Him stand on the tip-top turret of the temple, and said to Him, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰ for the Scripture says, 'He will give His angels directions about you, to protect you,' ¹¹ and, 'They will bear you up on their hands, so that you will never strike your foot against a stone.'" ¹² And Jesus answered him, "It has been said, 'You must not try the Lord your God.'"

¹¹ Now when they are bringing you before the synagogues or the magistrates or the authorities, never worry about how to defend yourselves, or what to say, ¹² for at that very moment the Holy Spirit will teach you what you ought to say."

³⁰ For all these are the very things the nations of the world are greedily trying to get, and surely your Father well knows that you need them. ³¹ But continue to seek His will, and these things will be yours besides. ³² Stop being afraid, my little flock, for your Father has gladly chosen to give you the kingdom.

³⁴ But ever be on your guard, so that your hearts may not be loaded down with self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries, and that day, like a trap, catch you unawares.

³⁶ But ever be watching and always praying, so that you may have strength to escape all this that is going to take place, and so you may take your stand in the presence of the Son of Man."

²⁴ There arose also among them a contention as to which one of them should rank as greatest. ²⁵ But He said to them, "The kings of the heathen lord it over them and those who exercise authority over them are given the title of 'Benefactor.' ²⁶ But you are not to do so. On the contrary, the greatest among you must be like the youngest and the leader as the servant. ²⁷ Which one, indeed, is the greater, the guest at the table or the servant who waits on him? Is it not the guest at the table? But I am among you as the servant who waits on you.

³¹ "Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has asked permission to sift all of you like wheat, ³² but I have prayed especially for you that your own faith may not utterly fail. And you yourself, after you have turned, must strengthen your brothers."

⁴⁸ you are to continue as witnesses to these things.

⁴⁴ You sprang from the devil, your real father, and you want to practice your father's wishes. He was a murderer from the very start, and he does not stand by the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks out of his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

¹¹ I am the good shepherd myself. The good shepherd gives his own life for his sheep.

²⁷ I now leave you the blessing of peace, I give you the blessing of my own peace. I myself do not give it in the way the world gives it. Stop letting your hearts be troubled or timid.

³³ I have told you these things, that you through union with me may have peace. In the world you have trouble, but be courageous! I have conquered the world."

¹⁹ In the evening of that same first day of the week, even with the doors of the room bolted where the disciples had met for fear of the Jews, Jesus went in and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you!"

²⁶ Just a week later the disciples were in the room again and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were bolted, Jesus came in and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you!"

¹⁵ After they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, are you more devoted to me than you are to these things?" Peter answered Him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I tenderly love you." Jesus said to him, "Then feed my lambs." ¹⁶ Jesus again said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, are you really devoted to me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I tenderly love you." Jesus said to him, "Then be a shepherd to my sheep." ¹⁷ For the third time Jesus asked him, "Simon, son of John, do you really tenderly love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus the third time asked him, "Do you really tenderly love me?" So he answered Him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I do tenderly love you." Jesus said to him, "Then feed my sheep.

²¹ So when Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "But, Lord, what about him?"

⁸ but you are going to receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you must be witnesses for me in Jerusalem and all over Judea and Samaria, and to the very ends of the earth."

³² I mean Jesus whom God raised from the dead, to which fact we are all witnesses,

¹⁵ and you killed the Prince of life, but God raised Him from the dead, to which fact we are witnesses.

³⁰ The God of our forefathers raised Jesus to life after you had hanged Him on a cross and killed Him. ³¹ God has exalted to His right hand this very One as our Leader and Saviour, in order to give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. ³² We and the Holy Spirit that God has given to those who practice obedience to Him are witnesses to these things."

³⁹ We are witnesses of everything that He did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. Yet they murdered Him by hanging Him upon a tree. ⁴⁰ But God raised Him to life on the third day, and permitted Him to be dearly seen, ⁴¹ not by all the people but by witnesses whom God had beforehand appointed, namely, by us who ate and drank with Him after His resurrection from the dead.

²³ When he reached there and saw the spiritual blessing God had given them, he was delighted, and continuously encouraged them all with hearty purpose to continue to be devoted to the Lord;

³⁰ And this they did and sent it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

⁴ When they arrived at Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, the apostles, and the elders, and they reported what God had done through them as instruments.

⁶ Now the apostles and elders met to consider this matter.

²² Then the apostles and elders in cooperation with the whole church passed a resolution to select and send some men of their number with Paul and Barnabas to Antioch. These were Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers. ²³ They sent this letter by them: "The apostles and elders as brothers send greeting to the brothers from among the heathen in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia.

²⁴ But now I count as nothing the sacrifice of my life, if only I can finish my race and render the service entrusted to me by the Lord Jesus, of faithfully telling the good news of God's favor.

²⁶ I therefore protest to you today that I am not responsible for the blood of any of you, ²⁷ for I never shrank from telling you God's whole plan. ²⁸ Take care of yourselves and of the whole flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, so as to continue to be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood.

² by whom we have an introduction through faith into this state of God's favor, in which we safely stand; and let us continue exulting in the hope of enjoying the glorious presence of God.

²⁸ Yes, we know that all things go on working together for the good of those who keep on loving God, who are called in accordance with God's purpose. ²⁹ For those on whom He set His heart beforehand He marked off as His own to be made like His Son, that He might be the eldest of many brothers; ³⁰ and those whom He marked off as His own He also calls; and those whom He calls He brings into right standing with Himself; those whom He brings into right standing with Himself He also glorifies.

¹¹ For even before the twin sons were born, and though they had done nothing either good or bad, that God's purpose in accordance with His choice might continue to stand, conditioned not on men's actions but on God's calling them,

²⁴ even us whom He has called, not only from among the Jews but from among the heathen too?

³⁶ For from Him everything comes, through Him everything lives, and for Him everything exists. Glory to Him forever! Amen.

¹⁰ In brotherly love be affectionate to one another, in personal honors put one another to the fore,

¹¹ Do this in particular because you know the present crisis, that it is high time for you to wake up out of your sleep, for our salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed. ¹² The night has almost passed; the day is at hand. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness, and put on the weapons of light. ¹³ Let us live becomingly for people who are in the light of day, not in carousing and drunkenness, nor in sexual immorality and licentiousness, nor in quarreling and jealousy. ¹⁴ Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and put a stop to gratifying the evil desires that lurk in your lower nature.

⁵ May God, who gives men patient endurance and encouragement, grant you such harmony with one another, in accordance with the standard which Christ Jesus sets,

¹³ May the hope-inspiring God so fill you with perfect joy and peace through your continuing faith, that you may bubble over with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁶ Greet one another with a consecrated kiss. All the churches of Christ wish to be remembered to you.

²⁵ To Him who can make you strong in accordance with the good news I bring and in accordance with the message preached about Jesus Christ, in accordance with the uncovering of the secret which for ages past had not been told,

⁹ God is entirely trustworthy, and it is He through whom you have been called into this fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

³⁰ So you owe it all to Him through union with Christ Jesus, whom God has made our wisdom, our means of right standing, our consecration, and our redemption,

⁵ Then what is Apollos? Or what is Paul? Mere servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord gave each of us his task.

⁹ for we belong to God as His fellow-workers; you belong to God as His field to be tilled, as His building to be built.

⁷ What soldier ever goes to war at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat any of its grapes? Who shepherds a flock and does not drink any of the milk the flock produces?

¹⁶ For if I do preach the good news, I have no ground for boasting of it, for I cannot help doing it. Yes, indeed, I am accursed if I do not preach the good news. ¹⁷ For if I do it of my own accord, I get my pay; but if I am unwilling to do it, I still am entrusted with trusteeship.

²⁵ Any man who enters an athletic contest practices rigid self-control in training, only to win a wreath that withers, but we are in to win a wreath that never withers.

¹³ No temptation has taken hold of you but what is common to human nature. And God is to be trusted not to let you be tempted beyond your strength, but when temptation comes, to make a way out of it, so that you can bear up under it.

²² Or, are we trying to incite the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we?

¹¹ But from the Lord's point of view woman is not independent of man nor man of woman.

¹ Now let me remind you, brothers, of the essence of the good news which I proclaimed to you, which you accepted, on which you now are standing,

²⁰ All the brothers wish to be remembered to you. Greet one another with a sacred kiss.

¹⁹ For God's Son, Christ Jesus, who was preached among you by us, Silvanus, Timothy, and me, did not become a "Yes" that might mean "No."

²⁴ Not that we are trying to lord it over your faith, but we are workers with you to promote your joy, for in your faith you are standing firm.

⁵ For I am not proclaiming myself but Christ Jesus as Lord, and myself a slave of yours for Jesus' sake.

¹⁷ For this slight and momentary sorrow continues to accumulate for me a solid and eternal glory far beyond any comparison,

¹ For I know that if this earthly tent in which I live is taken down, I have a building in heaven which comes from God, a house not built by human hands but eternal.

⁸ and yet I am cheerful and confident, but really I prefer to be away from home in the body and to be at home with the Lord.

¹⁷ For if anybody is in union with Christ, he is the work of a new creation; the old condition has passed away, a new condition has come.

¹⁴ It is now the third time that I have been ready to come to see you, and I will never ask you for financial support, for it is not your money but you yourselves that I want; for children are not by duty bound to lay up money for their parents, but parents for their children. ¹⁵ So in my own case, I will most happily spend my money and myself for your sakes. If I love you much more than I love others, am I to be loved less by you?

¹¹ Finally, brothers, goodbye! Practice the perfecting of your characters, keep listening to my appeals, continue thinking in harmony and living in peace, and the loving, peace-giving God will be with you. ¹² Greet one another with a sacred kiss.

⁸ But even if I or an angel from heaven preach a good news that is contrary to the one which I have already preached to you, a curse upon him! ⁹ As I have said it before, so now I say it again, if anybody is preaching to you a good news that is contrary to the one which you have already received, a curse upon him!

³ and how by revelation the secret was made known to me, as I have briefly written before.

¹⁶ Besides all these, take on the shield which faith provides, for with it you will be able to put out all the fire-tipped arrows shot by the evil one,

²¹ That you may also know how I am, Tychicus, our dearly loved brother and a faithful minister in the Lord's service, will give you all the information;

²³ Peace to the brothers and love with faith, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

¹⁹ for I know that through your prayers and a bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my spiritual welfare,

⁷ as you learned it from Epaphras, our dearly loved fellow-slave. As a faithful minister of Christ for me

²² by His death in His human body, so as to present you consecrated, faultless, and blameless in His presence, ²³ if indeed you continue well grounded and firm in faith and never shift from the hope inspired by the good news you heard, which has been preached all over the world, and of which I, Paul, have been made a minister.

⁵ For though I am far away in person, still I am with you in spirit, and I am glad to note your fine order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

⁷ with your roots deeply planted in Him, being continuously built up in Him, and growing stronger in faith, just as you were taught to do, overflowing through it in your gratitude.

³ for you have died, and your life is now hidden in God through your fellowship with Christ. ⁴ When Christ, who is our life, appears, you too will appear to be glorified in fellowship with Him.

¹² So as God's own chosen people, consecrated and dearly loved, you must once for all clothe yourselves with tenderheartedness, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience; you must keep on

¹² to live lives worthy of God who calls you into His kingdom and His glory.

³ so that none of you might be deceived amid these difficulties. For you knew yourselves that this is our appointed lot,

⁶ So let us stop sleeping as others do, but let us stay awake and keep sober. ⁷ For those who sleep at night and those who get drunk are drunken at night, ⁸ but let us who belong to the day keep sober, clothed with faith and love for a coat of mail and with the hope of salvation for a helmet.

⁷ and to give rest to you who are being crushed with sorrows, along with us, at the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ from heaven, with His mighty angels ⁸ in a flame of fire, who will take vengeance on those who do not know God, that is, those who will not listen to the good news of our Lord Jesus. ⁹ These will receive the punishment of eternal destruction as exiles from the presence of the Lord and His glorious might, ¹⁰ when on that day He comes to be glorified in His consecrated ones and to be admired by all who believe in Him because our testimony has been confidently accepted among you.
