⁴ But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to practice piety in the treatment of their own families, and to pay the debt they owe their parents or grandparents, for this is acceptable to God.

⁴ For God said, 'Honor your father and mother,' and 'Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.' ⁵ But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or mother, "Everything I have that might be used for helping you, is devoted to God," ⁶ is under no obligation at all to help his parent.' So you have set aside what God has said for the sake of what has been handed down to you.

¹¹ but you say if a man tells his father or mother, 'Everything I have that may be of use to you is Corban,' that is, consecrated to God, ¹² you let him off from doing anything more for his father or mother; ¹³ and so you set aside what God has said by what you have handed down. You have many other practices like these."

⁵¹ So He went back to Nazareth with them and continued to obey them. But His mother continued to treasure up all these sayings in her heart.

²⁶ So Jesus, on seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing near, said to His mother, "There is your son." ²⁷ Then He said to His disciple, "There is your mother." And from that very hour His disciple took her to his own home.

¹ Children, obey your parents, for this is right. ² "You must honor your father and mother" -- this is the first commandment, with a promise to make it good ³ "so that you may prosper and live a long life on earth."
