¹⁵ Do your best to present yourself to God an approved workman who has nothing to be ashamed of, who properly presents the message of truth.

⁵² He said to them, "Every scribe who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who can bring out of his storeroom new furnishings as well as old."

³³ With many stories like these He kept on telling them the message, as far as they could understand it.

⁴² And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful, thoughtful manager whom his master will put in charge of his household, to give out the supplies at the proper time?

¹⁵ After they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, are you more devoted to me than you are to these things?" Peter answered Him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I tenderly love you." Jesus said to him, "Then feed my lambs." ¹⁶ Jesus again said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, are you really devoted to me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I tenderly love you." Jesus said to him, "Then be a shepherd to my sheep." ¹⁷ For the third time Jesus asked him, "Simon, son of John, do you really tenderly love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus the third time asked him, "Do you really tenderly love me?" So he answered Him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I do tenderly love you." Jesus said to him, "Then feed my sheep.

²² "Fellow Israelites, listen to what I say. Jesus of Nazareth, as you yourselves well know, a man accredited to you by God through mighty deeds and wonders and wonder-works which God performed through Him right here among you,

²⁷ for I never shrank from telling you God's whole plan.

¹⁸ whoever in this way continues serving Christ is well-pleasing to God and approved by men.

¹⁰ Remember me to Apelles, that most venerated Christian. Remember me to the members of Aristobulus' family.

⁶ Yet, when among mature believers we do set forth a wisdom, but a wisdom that does not belong to this world or to the leaders of this world who are passing away;

¹ So I myself, brothers, could not deal with you as spiritual persons, but as creatures of human clay, as merely baby Christians. ² I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you could not take it. Why, you cannot take it even now,

⁶ He has qualified even me as a minister of the new covenant, which is not a written but a spiritual covenant. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

² On the other hand, I have renounced all underhanded, disgraceful methods; I neither practice cunning nor do I tamper with God's message, but by clear and candid statements of truth I try to commend myself to every human conscience in God's sight.

⁹ So whether I am at home or away from home, it is my constant ambition to please Him.

³ To keep my ministry from being found fault with, I am trying not to put a single hindrance in anybody's way. ⁴ On the contrary, I am trying in everything to prove to people that I am a true servant of God: by my tremendous endurance in sorrows, distresses, difficulties;

¹⁸ For it is not the man who keeps on recommending himself who is really approved, but it is the man whom the Lord recommends.

¹⁰ Am I now trying to win men's favor, or God's? Or, am I trying to be pleasing to men? If I were still trying to be pleasing to men, I would not be a slave of Christ at all.

¹³ You too, as you have heard the message of the truth, the good news that means your salvation, and as you have trusted in Him too, have been stamped with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit,

⁴ for since we have been so approved by God as to be entrusted with the good news, we are now telling it, not to please men but God, who proves and finds approved our hearts.

¹⁴ We beg you, brothers, continue to warn the shirkers, to cheer the faint-hearted, to hold up the weak, and to be patient with everybody.

⁶ If you continue to put these things before the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, ever feeding your own soul on the truths of the faith and of the fine teaching which you have followed.

¹² Let no one think little of you because you are young, but always set an example for believers, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. ¹³ Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of the Scriptures, and to preaching and teaching. ¹⁴ Stop neglecting the gift you received, which was given you through prophetic utterance when the elders laid their hands upon you. ¹⁵ Continue cultivating these things; be devoted to them, so that everybody will see your progress. ¹⁶ Make it your habit to pay close attention to yourself and your teaching. Persevere in these things, for if you do you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

¹¹ So let us do our best to be admitted to that rest, so that not one of us may fail through the same sort of disobedience.

¹¹ I have much to say to you about Him, but it is difficult to make it clear to you, since you have become so dull in your spiritual senses. ¹² For although you ought to be teachers of others because you have been Christians so long, you actually need someone to teach you over and over again the very elements of the truths that God has given us, and you have gotten into such a state that you are in constant need of milk instead of solid food. ¹³ For everyone who uses milk alone is inexperienced in the message of right-doing; he is only an infant. ¹⁴ But solid food belongs to full-grown men who on account of constant use have their faculties trained to distinguish good and evil.

¹⁸ In accordance with His will He made us His children by the message of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

¹⁰ Therefore, brothers, be all the more in earnest to make certain to yourselves God's call and choice of you. For if you cultivate these qualities, you will never slip,

¹⁵ Yes, I will be in earnest, so that every time you have occasion, after I have gone away, you may call these things to mind.

¹⁴ Therefore, dearly beloved, since you are expecting this, be in earnest to be found by Him without a blot, without reproach, and at peace.
