You must have what you want." And her daughter was cured at that very moment.

²¹ It was just after that that Jesus Christ for the first time clearly taught His disciples that He had to go to Jerusalem and submit to many forms of suffering at the hands of the elders, high priests, and scribes, and be killed, but be raised to life on the third day.

¹¹ He came into His own world, but His own people did not welcome Him.

²⁶ John answered them, "I am baptizing only in water. There is standing among you One with whom you are not acquainted.

⁵ His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever He tells you."

³ He left Judea and went back again to Galilee. ⁴ And He had to go through Samaria.

⁹ So the Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that a Jew like you asks a Samaritan woman like me for a drink?" For Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans.

²¹ Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. ²² You Samaritans do not know what you are worshiping; we Jews do know what we are worshiping; for salvation comes from the Jews.

³⁹ Many of the Samaritans in that town believed in Him because of the woman's testimony, when she said, "He has told me everything I ever did." ⁴⁰ So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they kept on urging Him to stay with them; so He did stay there two days. ⁴¹ Then a much larger number believed in Him because of what He said Himself, ⁴² and they were saying to the woman, "It is not merely because of what you said that we now believe, for we have heard Him ourselves, and we know that He is really the Saviour of the world."

⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son is going to live." The man believed what Jesus said to him and started home. ⁵¹ While he was still coming down, his slaves met him and told him, "Your boy is going to live." ⁵² So he asked them at what hour he began to get better, and they said to him, "Yesterday at one o'clock the fever left him." ⁵³ Then the father knew that that was the very hour when Jesus had said to him, "Your son is going to live." So he and his whole household believed in Jesus.

¹⁴ Afterward Jesus found him in the temple court, and said to him, "See! You are now well. Stop sinning or something worse may befall you."

²³ that all men may honor the Son as they do the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

³³ Then Jesus said to them, "Just a little while longer I am to be with you, and then I am going back to Him who has sent me. ³⁴ You will then look for me, but you will not find me, and you cannot come where I am going." ³⁵ The Jews then said to one another, "Where is He about to go that we shall not find Him? He is not going to our people scattered among the Greeks, and going to teach the Greeks, is He? ³⁶ What does He mean by saying, 'You will look for me and will not find me, and you cannot come where I am going'?"

⁷ When the questioners persisted, Jesus straightened up and said to them, "Let the one of you who is sinless be the first one to cast a stone at her." ⁸ Then Jesus again stooped and continued writing in the dirt. ⁹ Having heard, they began to leave one by one, starting with the eldest, until only Jesus was left with the woman. ¹⁰ He straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"

²¹ Then Jesus again said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die under the curse of your sins; for where I am going you can never come." ²² Then the Jews began to say, "He is not going to kill Himself, is He? Is that why He said, 'Where I am going you can never come'?" ²³ He continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this present world; I do not belong to this present world. ²⁴ So I have told you that you would die under the curse of your sins, for unless you believe that I am the Christ, you will die under the curse of your sins."

⁴⁸ Then the Jews answered Him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and are under the power of a demon?"

⁷ and said, "Go and wash them in the pool of Siloam" (which means One who has been sent). So he went and washed them and went home seeing.

³⁸ So he said, "Lord, I believe!" Then he worshiped Him.

¹⁰ but if he travels in the nighttime, he does stumble, because he has no light."

²⁵ Whoever loves his lower life will lose the higher, but whoever hates his lower life in this world preserves the higher for eternal life.

³⁵ Jesus said to them, "Only a little while longer you will have the light. Keep on living by it while you have the light, so that darkness may not overtake you, for whoever walks about in the dark does not know where he is going.

³⁸ so that the utterance of the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed what they heard from us? And to whom has the mighty arm of the Lord been shown?"

³³ Dear children, I am to be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, but, as I told the Jews, so I now tell you, you cannot just now go where I am going.

⁵ But now I am going away to Him who has sent me, and not one of you is asking me where I am going, ⁶ but sorrow has taken complete possession of your hearts, because I have told you these things. ⁷ Yet it is nothing but the truth I now tell you, that it is better for you that I should go away. For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come into close fellowship with you, but if I do go away, I will send Him to be in close fellowship with you.

¹⁶ "In just a little while you will not see me any longer; and yet, in just a little while after you will see me again." ¹⁷ So some of His disciples said to one another, "What does He mean by telling us, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again,' and 'Because I am going away to the Father'?" ¹⁸ So they kept saying, "What does He mean by saying, 'a little while'? We do not know what He is talking about." ¹⁹ Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him a question, and so He said to them, "Are you inquiring of one another about this saying of mine, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again'? ²⁰ I most solemnly say to you, you will weep and wail, but the world will be glad; you will grieve but your grief will be turned into gladness. ²¹ When a woman is in labor, she is in pain, for her time has come, but when the baby is born, she forgets her pain because of her joy that a human being has been born into the world. ²² So you too are now in sorrow, but I am going to see you again, and then your hearts will be happy, and no one can rob you of your happiness.

Holy Father, keep them by the power which you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are. ¹² As long as I was with them, I kept them by your power which you gave me, and I protected them, and not one of them was lost, except the one who is now doomed to be lost, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³ And now I am going to be with you, and I am saying these things while still in the world, that the joy which I experience may be fully experienced in their own souls.

³⁶ Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would have been fighting to keep me from being turned over to the Jews. But as a matter of fact, my kingdom does not come from such a source."

¹⁵ After they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, are you more devoted to me than you are to these things?" Peter answered Him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I tenderly love you." Jesus said to him, "Then feed my lambs."

⁶ So those who were present began to ask Him, "Lord, is this the time when you are going to set up the kingdom again for Israel?" ⁷ He answered them, "It is not your business to learn times and dates which the Father has a right to fix, ⁸ but you are going to receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you must be witnesses for me in Jerusalem and all over Judea and Samaria, and to the very ends of the earth."

⁵ So Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began to preach the Christ to the Samaritans. ⁶ As the crowds continued to listen to his message and continued to see his wonder-works which he was performing, with one mind they became interested in what was said by Philip. ⁷ For many of those under the power of foul spirits cried out and the spirits came out of them, and many paralyzed and crippled people were cured. ⁸ So there was great rejoicing in that city. ⁹ There was a man named Simon in the city, who had kept the Samaritan people thrilled by practicing magic there and by claiming to be a great man. ¹⁰ Everybody, high and low, kept running after him, saying, "He is certainly what is known as the Great Power of God!" ¹¹ They kept running after him, because for a long time he had thrilled them with his magical performances. ¹² But when the people came to believe the good news proclaimed by Philip about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were constantly baptized. ¹³ So Simon himself came to believe too, and after he was baptized he continued to be devoted to Philip, and he was always thrilled at seeing such great signs and wonder-works continuously performed. ¹⁴ When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted God's message, they sent Peter and John there. ¹⁵ They came and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, ¹⁶ for as yet He had not come upon any of them, but they had been baptized merely in the name of the Lord Jesus. ¹⁷ Then they laid their hands upon them, and one by one they received the Holy Spirit. ¹⁸ So when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was conferred by the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, ¹⁹ and said, "Give me this power too, that when I lay my hands on anyone he may receive the Holy Spirit." ²⁰ But Peter said to him, "Your money go to perdition with you for even dreaming you could buy the gift of God with money! ²¹ You have no share or part in this matter, for your heart is not sincere in the sight of God. ²² So repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord, to see if this thought of your heart may be forgiven you. ²³ For I see that you are a bitter weed and a bundle of crookedness!" ²⁴ So Simon answered, "Both of you beg the Lord for me that none of the things you have said may befall me!" ²⁵ So after they had given their testimony and spoken the Lord's message, they started back to Jerusalem, and on the way continued to tell the good news in many Samaritan villages.

²⁵ When Peter went into the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet and did homage to him. ²⁶ But Peter lifted him to his feet, saying, "Get up, I too am just a man myself."

²¹ because, although they once knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give Him thanks, but became silly in their senseless speculations, and so their insensible hearts have been shrouded in darkness.

¹² They all have turned aside, all have become corrupt; No one does good, not even one!

⁴ But how did God reply to him? "I have reserved for myself seven thousand men who have never bent their knees to Baal." ⁵ So it is at the present time; a remnant remains, in accordance with God's unmerited favor. ⁶ But if it is by His unmerited favor, it is not at all conditioned on what they have done. If that were so, His favor would not be favor at all. ⁷ What are we then to conclude? Israel has failed to obtain what it is still in search for, but His chosen ones have obtained it. The rest have become insensible to it,

³⁵ Or who has ever advanced God anything to have Him pay him back?

²⁰ Do the opposite. If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink, for if you act in this way, you will heap burning coals upon his head!

¹³ Then let us stop criticizing one another; instead, do this, determine to stop putting stumbling blocks or hindrances in your brother's way.

¹⁷ For the kingdom of God does not consist in what we eat and drink, but in doing right, in peace and joy through the Holy Spirit;

²⁰ Stop undoing the work of God just for the sake of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything when it makes another stumble. ²¹ The right thing to do is not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything else, that makes your brother stumble.

¹⁷ But I beg you, brothers, to keep on the lookout for those who stir up divisions and put hindrances in your way, in opposition to the instruction that you had, and always avoid them.

⁷ so that there is no spiritual gift in which you consciously come short, while you are waiting for the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ,

¹¹ Yes, the overscrupulous brother, for whom Christ died, is ruined by your so-called knowledge. ¹² Now if in such a way you sin against your brothers and wound their overscrupulous consciences, you are actually sinning against Christ. ¹³ So then, if food can make my brother fall, I will never, no, never, eat meat again, in order to keep my brother from falling.

¹⁵ But I myself have never used any of these rights. And I am not writing this just to make it so in my case, for I had rather die than do that. No one shall rob me of this ground of boasting. ¹⁶ For if I do preach the good news, I have no ground for boasting of it, for I cannot help doing it. Yes, indeed, I am accursed if I do not preach the good news. ¹⁷ For if I do it of my own accord, I get my pay; but if I am unwilling to do it, I still am entrusted with trusteeship.

²² To the overscrupulous I have become overscrupulous, to win the overscrupulous; yes, I have become everything to everybody, in order by all means to save some of them.

⁶ Now all these things occurred as warnings to us, to keep us from hankering after what is evil, in the ways they did. ⁷ Now stop being idolaters, as some of them were, for the Scripture says, "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to dance." ⁸ Let us stop practicing immorality, as some of them did, and on one day twenty-three thousand fell dead. ⁹ Let us stop trying the Lord's patience, as some of them did, and for it were destroyed by the snakes. ¹⁰ You must stop grumbling, as some of them did, and for it were destroyed by the destroying angel. ¹¹ Those things continued to befall them as warnings to others, and they were written down for the purpose of instructing us, in whose lives the climax of the ages has been reached. ¹² So the man who thinks he stands securely must be on the lookout not to fall.

³² Stop being stumbling blocks to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,

¹⁹ Yes, indeed, there must be parties among you, in order that people of approved fitness may come to the front among you.

² If I should have the gift of prophecy, And know all secret truths, and knowledge in its every form, and have such perfect faith that I could move mountains, but have no love, I am nothing.

⁴ Love is so patient and so kind; love never boils with jealousy; it never boasts, is never puffed with pride; ⁵ It does not act with rudeness, or insist upon its rights; it never gets provoked, it never harbors evil thoughts; ⁶ Is never glad when wrong is done, but always glad when truth prevails; ⁷ It bears up under anything; it exercises faith in everything; it keeps up hope in everything; it gives us power to endure in anything.

⁹ For I belong to the lowest rank of the apostles, and am not fit to bear the title apostle, because I once persecuted the church of God. ¹⁰ But by God's unmerited favor I have become what I am, and His unmerited favor shown to me was not bestowed for nothing, for I have toiled more extensively than any of them, and yet it was not I but God's unmerited favor working with me.

⁸ Three times I begged the Lord about this to make it go away and leave me, ⁹ but He said to me, "My spiritual strength is sufficient, for it is only by means of conscious weakness that perfect power is developed." ¹⁰ So I most happily boast about my weaknesses, so that the strength of Christ may overshadow me. That is why I take such pleasure in weaknesses, insults, distresses, persecution, and difficulties, which I endure for Christ's sake, for it is when I am consciously weak that I am really strong.

¹¹ Now when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. ¹² For before the coming of certain people from James, he was in the habit of eating with heathen Christians, but after they came, he began to draw back and hold aloof from them, because he was afraid of the circumcision party. ¹³ The rest of the Jewish Christians, too, joined him in this pretense so that even Barnabas was influenced to join them in their pretense. ¹⁴ But when I saw that they were not living up to the truth of the good news, I said to Cephas, and that before them all, "If you are living like a heathen and not like a Jew, although you are a Jew yourself, why do you try to make the heathen live like Jews?"

³¹ You must remove all bitterness, rage, anger, loud threats, and insults, with all malice. ³² You must practice being kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has graciously forgiven you.

² not to let your minds be easily unsettled or even be excited, whether by some message by the Spirit or by some saying or letter that is claimed as coming from me, saying that the day of the Lord is already here.

⁸ Then the representative of lawlessness will be uncovered, and the Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of His mouth and put a stop to his operations by His appearance and coming;

¹⁰ and with a completely wicked deception for men who are on the way to destruction, because they refused to love the truth so as to be saved. ¹¹ This is why God sends them a misleading influence till they actually believe what is false, ¹² so that all who have refused to believe the truth but have chosen unrighteousness instead might be condemned.

¹³ But you, brothers, must never grow tired of doing right. ¹⁴ If anyone refuses to obey what we have said in this letter, mark that person and stop having anything to do with him, so that he will feel ashamed of it.

⁷ By faith Noah, on being divinely warned about things not seen as yet, in reverence prepared an ark for saving his family, and by his faith condemned the world and became possessor of the uprightness that results from faith.

² keeping our eyes on Jesus, the perfect leader and example of faith, who, instead of the joy which lay before Him, endured the cross with no regard for its shame, and since has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

¹⁵ Continue to look after one another, that no one fails to gain God's spiritual blessing; or some evil like a bitter root may spring up and trouble you, and many of you be contaminated by it --

¹ Come now, you rich people, weep aloud and howl over the miseries that are sure to overtake you. ² Your wealth has rotted, your clothes are moth-eaten, ³ your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will testify against you and devour your flesh like fire. You have stored up these things for the last days. ⁴ See, the wages that you have kept back from the laborers who reaped your fields are crying aloud, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ Here on earth you have lived in luxury and self-indulgence; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter.

⁸ You must be patient, too; you must put iron into your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is close at hand.

¹⁹ My brothers, if any one of you has wandered away from the truth, and someone brings him back,

⁷ so that the genuineness of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even after it is shown by the test of fire to be genuine, may result in your praise and glory and honor at the unveiling of Jesus Christ.

¹³ Therefore, as a means of spiritual preparation, tighten up the belt about your minds, keep perfectly calm, keep your hope on the spiritual blessing to be conferred upon you at the unveiling of Jesus Christ.

²² Since you have purified your souls by obeying the truth, in sincere love for the brotherhood you must love one another heartily and fervently, ²³ because you have been born anew, not from a germ that perishes but from one that does not perish, by the word of the living and everlasting God.

¹⁹ in which He went and preached to the spirits in prison, ²⁰ who had once been disobedient, while God's patience was awaiting in the days when Noah was preparing an ark, in which a few people-- eight, to be exact -- were brought safely through the water.

¹ Now there were false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you too, who will insidiously introduce destructive heresies and deny the Master who has bought them, thus bringing on themselves swift destruction. ² Many people will follow their immoral ways, and because of them the true Way will be abused, ³ In their greed they will exploit you with messages manufactured by themselves. From of old their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction has not been slumbering.

⁵ and if He did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others when He brought the flood upon the world of godless people; ⁶ and if He condemned, by burning them to ashes, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, making them an example to godless people of what was coming to them,

⁹ surely, then, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from trial and to keep wrongdoers under punishment for the day of judgment,

¹⁸ For by uttering arrogant nonsense, through base desires of the lower nature, they entice into immorality men who are just escaping from those who live in error, ¹⁹ promising them freedom, though they are slaves of destruction themselves; for a man is the slave of anything that conquers him. ²⁰ For if, after men have escaped the corrupting ways of the world through a full knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again become entangled in them and are conquered by them, then their last condition is worse than their former one. ²¹ For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of uprightness than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command committed to their trust. ²² In them is verified the truth of the proverb, "A dog turns back to what he has vomited"; and of that other proverb, "A sow that has washed herself goes back to wallow in the mire."

¹⁰ The day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a roar, the heavenly bodies will be destroyed by being burned up, and the earth with all its works will melt away.

⁸ Look out for yourselves, so as not to lose what we have worked for, but so as to get your full reward.

⁷ just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring towns which like them indulged in grossest immorality and unnatural vice, stand as a perpetual warning, in suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

⁷ See! He is coming on the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even the men who pierced Him, and all the tribes of the earth will lament over Him. Even so. Amen.

¹⁰ Do not be so afraid of what you are to suffer. See! The devil is going to throw some of you into prison to be tested there and for ten days to suffer pressing troubles. Each one of you must prove to be faithful, even if you have to die, and I will give you the crown of life.

¹⁴ Yet I hold it somewhat against you that you have among you some who are clinging to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to set a trap for the children of Israel, to entice them to eat the meat that had been sacrificed to idols and to commit immoral practices.

²⁰ But I hold it against you that you are tolerating that Jezebel of a woman who claims to be a prophetess, and by her teaching is misleading my slaves to practice immorality and to eat meat that has been sacrificed to idols.

¹⁰ the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who is seated on the throne, and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and they throw their crowns in front of the throne, and say:

¹⁴ Then the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the elders fell down and worshiped.

⁸ and their lifeless bodies will lie on the streets of the great city that is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord also was crucified.

¹⁴ He leads the inhabitants of the earth astray because of the wonders he is permitted to perform in the presence of the wild beast, telling the inhabitants of the earth to erect a statue to the wild beast that bears the sword-thrust and yet has lived. ¹⁵ Permission has also been given him to impart life to the statue of the wild beast so that it can speak, and to have all who do not worship the statue of the wild beast killed. ¹⁶ And he makes all, great and small, rich and poor, freemen and slaves, have a mark stamped on their right hands or on their foreheads, ¹⁷ and he permits no one to buy or sell anything unless he bears the mark; that is, the name of the wild beast or the number that represents the name. ¹⁸ Here is scope for wisdom! Let anyone who has the mental keenness calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is the number of a certain man; his number is six hundred and sixty-six.

⁷ He cried in a loud voice, "Fear God and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come. Worship Him who made heaven and earth and sea and the springs of water."

⁴ Then the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, "Amen! Praise the Lord!" ⁵ And there came a voice from the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you slaves of His who fear Him, great and small."

¹⁰ Then I fell before his feet to worship him, but he said to me, "You must take care not to do that. I am only a fellow-slave of yours and of your brothers who hold to the testimony borne by Jesus. Worship God. For the testimony borne by Jesus is the inspiring spirit of prophecy."

¹⁷ Then I saw an angel standing on the sun, and in a loud voice shouting to all the birds that fly in mid-air: "Come! Gather for God's great banquet, ¹⁸ to feast on the flesh of kings, generals, heroes, of horses and their riders; yes, the flesh of all men, freemen and slaves, great and small."
